Banditry: Niger donates vehicles, motorcycles to army

 
The Secretary to the Niger State Government, Ahmed Matane, on Friday presented three Hilux Pick Up Vans and 33 motorcycles to the 31 Artillery Brigade, Minna.
The government’s gesture was to help in the ongoing fight against banditry and kidnapping in Shiroro, Munya and Rafi local government areas of the state.
A statement issued by the SSG Information Officer, Lawal Tanko, in Minna, said the vehicles and motorcycles would further enhance the logistic capabilities of officers deployed in fighting the criminal elements.

Ikoyi electrocution: Board suspends eight prison officials

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board on Friday approved the suspension of eight officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) over the electrocution of five inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos.
A statement issued by the NCS, Francis Enobore, in Abuja, said the suspended personnel comprised of seven senior officers and one junior official of the correctional centre.
At least five inmates died and several others seriously injured in last Monday’s electrocution at the correctional facility.

NDDC: N’Delta Coalition asks Buhari, Senate to ignore ‘paid activists’

A coalition of Niger Delta activists have described the campaign to invalidate the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC and sack the Senate committee on Niger Delta as a calculated attempt to perpetuate the illegality at the commission.
The activists in a statement Saturday, while reacting to Friday’s protest by a handful of protesters at the National Assembly, explained that the motley protesters who were sponsored, did not mask their real intents by demanding that the 3-man NDDC Interim Management Committee set up by the Niger Delta minister, Chief Godswill Akpabio be allowed to stay in office while the board duly presented by President Muhammadu Buhari and confirmed by the Senate be dissolved.

Police nab man for allegedly killing neighbour in Niger

The Police in Niger have arrested one Mohammed Isa, 27, of Dogon Ruwa village of Bosso Local Government Area of the state, for allegedly shooting and killing his neighbour, Umaru Abubakar, 30, with a Dane gun.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Usman Adamu, disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Saturday.

Tax evasion: Enugu gov’t seals 40 properties

Tax: Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, ESIRS, has sealed no less than 40 business premises in the state for their inability to comply with taxations.
Chairman of the ESIRS Board, Mr. Emeka Odo said the service has penciled down 3,000 financial, educational and other related institutions and business concerns that would be sealed for failures to remit their taxes.
Odo disclosed that the total revenue his agency hopes to recover was in the excess of N2.5 billion, which he said if recovered will help the state provide more social services to the people.

Marine life under threat from plummeting oxygen levels

The loss of oxygen from the ocean due to climate change risks “dire effects” on sea life, fisheries and coastal communities, a global conservation body said Saturday.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) said that around 700 sites had been identified globally with low oxygen levels — up from only 45 in the 1960s.
In the same period, the group warned, the volume of anoxic waters — areas totally devoid of oxygen — have quadrupled.

Theft in Govt House: Arrested NSCDC personnel return duty posts

Four personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) arrested over alleged theft at Bayelsa Government House Yeagoa have returned to their duty posts.
Mrs Christiana Abiakam-Omanu, Bayelsa Commandant of NSCDC told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, said the NSCDC personnel were questioned and freed by the Police.

Jihadists kill eight in Kenya bus attack

Several police officers were among at least eight people killed in an attack on a bus in northeast Kenya claimed Saturday by the Somali Islamist Al-Shebaab group.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta had been briefed on the “brutal” murders of eight people, including police, during the attack in Wajir county, a presidential spokesperson said Saturday.
However a senior police source told AFP that the toll was 10 dead, seven of them police.
