Controller confirms inmate’s death at Correctional Centre

The Controller, Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) in Akwa Ibom, Mr Alex Oditah, on Saturday confirmed that an inmate died in Eket Correctional Centre.
Oditah told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that preliminary investigation revealed that the inmate died of difficulties in breathing.
According to him, colleagues of the deceased in the correctional centre on Saturday rose in sympathy over his death.
Oditah said: “I received a call on the death of one inmate from the Eket Correctional Centre on Saturday.

Plane crash kills 23 at DR Congo city

Twenty-three bodies were recovered on Sunday after a small plane crashed on takeoff into a densely populated area of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, rescue workers said.
“We are up to 23 bodies now,” Goma rescue service coordinator Joseph Makundi told AFP.
Goma airport official Richard Mangolopa told AFP no survivors were expected from the disaster.

The Dornier-228 aircraft had been headed for Beni, 350 kilometres (220 miles) north of Goma when it went down in a residential area near the airport in the east of the country.

UN committed to promoting older persons’ welfare – Muhammad-Bande

President of the United Nations General Assembly, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, said on Sunday the global body is committed to promoting the welfare of the ordinary people, especially older people in the society.

Muhammad-Bande said this in Abuja while responding to a question on the legacy he hopes to leave after his one year tenure as the President of the UN General Assembly.

Taraba: 68-year-old man celebrates 30 children, 70 grandchildren

Alhaji Adamu Loddo, a Jalingo-based 68-year-old man on Saturday urged parents to ensure proper upbringing of children as he celebrated the gift of 30 surviving children and 70 grand children.
Loddo, who expressed appreciation to God for the gift, also said the celebration was an opportunity to show the right example on how to bring up children in both scholarship and character.
“Today I am happy to say that at least 15 of my children and 5 grandchildren have obtained various degrees from different universities in Nigeria.

Onuesoke urges scrapping of NNPC over dormant refineries

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has called for the scrapping of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and privatisation of other agencies under it for failing to revive the nation’s four refineries.
According to Onuesoke, NPPC is an agency of government lacking credibility and the capacity to profitably run a business enterprise.
Onuesoke, in a statement issued to Sunday Vanguard, said it is a shame that Nigeria has four refineries under the NNPC, but none of them is producing fuel either for internal consumption or exportation for commercial gains wondering why Nigeria government must continue to retain a corporation that is not productive.

Following the agitations by the general public over the decision of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to hold an international conference on witchcraft, the institution has succumbed to pressure and accepted to change the topic for the conference.
The Prof. B.I.C Ijomah Centre for Policy Studies and Research, UNN, had earlier proposed to discuss ‘Witchcraft: Meaning, Factors and Practices’ which the public understood as promotion of sorcery in an institution that is supposed to be devoted to the pursuit of academic excellence.

Wilder KOs Ortiz to retain WBC heavyweight title

Unbeaten Deontay Wilder landed a devastating right hand to knock out Luis Ortiz in the seventh round and retain his World Boxing Council heavyweight title.
The 34-year-old Wilder remains on course to achieve his goal of unifying all four heavyweight belts despite being largely outboxed by Ortiz before the explosive one-punch finish at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas late Saturday night.

Atletico slips behind Barca with yet another draw

Atletico Madrid lost ground on leaders Barcelona as they were held 1-1 away to Granada on Saturday for a seventh draw in 14 La Liga games.
Diego Simeone’s side went ahead on the hour mark through Brazilian left back Renan Lodi but lost their lead soon after when Granada’s German Sanchez outjumped his marker Hector Herrera and sent a header crashing into the net.
Simeone brought on record signing Joao Felix in search of a winner but his side barely managed to test Granada’s keeper Rui Silva in the closing stages.

Chelsea sparkles but City come back for crucial win

Manchester City returned to winning ways with a 2-1 success over Chelsea on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium.
It ended the Londoners’ run of six straight wins and kept Pep Guardiola’s side nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
City’s loss at Anfield before the international break made this a key game for them but they were made to work for their three points by Frank Lampard’s enterprising side.
Chelsea sliced open City’s defence in the 22nd minute with Mateo Kovacic superbly picking out N’Golo Kante’s forward burst and the French midfielder held off compatriot Benjamin Mendy before smartly slipping the ball past the advancing Ederson.
