UNFPA expands initiative to Sokoto, Bauchi to keep more girls in school
The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) has expanded the Adolescent Girl Initiative (AGI) to Sokoto and Bauchi States to keeps more girls in schools so that the key can harness their potentials.
Dr. Zubaida Abubakar, the National Programme Analyst, Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health and HIV, UNFPA Nigeria, disclosed this during a media roundtable on the 2019 International Day of the Girl Child on Wednesday in Abuja.
Abubakar reiterated the commitment of UNFPA to support young girls to harness their potentials through the Adolescent Girls Initiative which has ended in Kaduna and Kebbi states.

UNILAG raises task force to check sexual harassment, other offences
The University of Lagos has set up a task force to address issues of sexual harassment with a view to stemming the ugly tide.
The university’s Principal Assistant Registrar for Communication, Mrs. Taiwo Oloyede, said in a statement that the move“is in continuation of the institution’s unrelenting campaign against the menace of sexual harassment and other forms of inappropriate behaviours.
The institution recently suspended two senior lecturers exposed to alleged sexual harassment in a BBC investigative documentary video, ‘African Eye’.

2020 Budget: Delta to present N389bn as estimates

Delta State Executive Council, Tuesday ratified the sum of N389 billion as a budget proposal for the 2020 fiscal year.
The state Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Barry Pere Gbe who made the disclosure, said the proposed budget is N1 billion lower than that of 2019, which has N217 as capital expenditure and N171 billion as recurrent expenditure.
Noting that the macroeconomic framework that gave birth to the 2019 budget was similar to that of the 2020 proposal, he disclosed that the earlier prepared fiscal strategy paper for the state was re-adjusted to reflect what transpired at the national level.

Chairman Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Sen. Matthew Uroghide has said that corruption in the country would reduce when proper auditing systems were in place.
He said this at the budget defence by the Office of the Auditor-General in Abuja on Wednesday.
Urhogide said that corruption had continued unabated in government business because the office of the auditor general was not equipped to carry out its responsibilities.
“Fighting corruption the first line is the duty of the office of the auditor general of the federation.

NiMet predicts thunderstorms, rains for Thursday
Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms over few places of the north, with thunderstorms and rains over central, southern cities on Thursday.
NiMet’s weather outlook on Wednesday in Abuja predicted partly cloudy conditions over the northeastern region with chances of thunderstorms over Yelwa, Kano and Zamfara in the morning hours.
It further predicted thunderstorms over the northeastern flank of the region in the afternoon/evening hours with day and night temperatures of 32 to 37 degree Celsius and 20 to 24 degree Celsius respectively.

Buhari approves additional cost saving measures for MDAs
In a bid to curb leakages and ensure efficiency in the management of resources of government, President Muhammadu Buhari, has approved additional cost-saving measures for immediate implementation.
Mr Willie Bassey, Director Information, office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, in a statement on Wednesday , said that Buhari’s decision was aimed at instilling financial discipline and prudence, particularly, in the area of official travels.

Nigeria, Ghana meet to resolve trade issues caused by border closure
Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama and his Ghanaian counterpart, Mrs Shirley Botchwey, said that both countries had agreed on modalities to resolve the trade challenges arising from the recent border closure.
Both Ministers disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja after a closed-door meeting.
Botchwey, who was accompanied by the Ghanaian Trade Minister, Hon. Alan Kyerematen, would proceed for further discussions with Nigeria’s Trade Minister and Comptroller General of Customs.
