In another year, when he’s retired, we will look back upon his greatness in football, and people won’t remember this ending,” Neville said.

target=_blank>Why Super Eagles players didn’t want to go to 2026 World Cup – Onugkha
Rodina Moscow forward, German Onugkha has claimed that Super Eagles players lacked the motivation to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup because they were already wealthy. He said the players failed to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the tournament because they had little incentive to participate, given their financial status. Born in Moscow to a Russian mother and a Nigerian father, Onugkha has pledged his international future to Nigeria. He declined a call-up to the Russian national team for friendly matches against Thailand and Vietnam in September 2024. Nigeria failed to qualify for the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup after losing 4-3 on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African playoff final. Onugkha argued that Nigeria had enough quality to qualify for the 2026 World Cup but attributed the failure partly to a lack of motivation among the players. Asked about his support for the Nigerian national team, Onugkha told Match TV: “Yes, it was disappointing that they didn’t qualify for the World Cup. “However, individuals lack motivation to participate there. Examining their roster—with such calibre of players, World Cup qualification should be achievable. “They possess a roster valued at approximately half a billion dollars, yet they failed to qualify. In my assessment, they lacked the desire to go there. They would prefer six weeks of vacation over tournament participation.” Onugkha played for Turkish Süper Lig club Kayserispor last season, when the team was relegated. He also faced Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen during the campaign. He added: “I have a lot of money already. Additional wealth would not benefit Osimhen. It becomes immediately apparent you do not comprehend the Nigerian mentality (laughs). “There’s just no motivation, that’s all. I remember Osimhen playing against us for Galatasaray. “He’d scored two goals by the 20th minute; he was a beast! And then I look at the World Cup qualifiers—it’s clear he doesn’t want to play.”

target=_blank>Turkey: What Galatasaray coach said as Osimhen returns with assist in 3-1 win over Kasimpasa
Galatasaray assistant coach, İrfan Saraloğlu has spoken about Victor Osimhen’s return from injury following the Nigerian striker’s contribution to the club’s 3-1 victory over Kasimpasa on Friday evening. The Nigerian international, who suffered an injury during Galatasaray’s 3-2 victory over Istanbul Başakşehir in September, was introduced in the second half of the match. The former Napoli forward replaced Deniz Gul with 13 minutes remaining as Galatasaray sought to secure the win at Rams Park. Osimhen, who created several scoring opportunities after coming on, provided an assist for the team’s final goal, scored by Gabonese midfielder Mario Lemina in the closing stages of the match. Following the match, Saraloğlu disclosed that Galatasaray’s performance declined after Lucas Torreira was sent off in the 65th minute. “During the second half, following the dismissal, we became more defensive, and our tactical structure was compromised. “However, I must note that Sanchez was out of position when the goal was conceded. They capitalised on that space,” he stated, according to Galatasaray’s official website. The Galatasaray assistant coach also explained the reason for introducing Osimhen late in the match, emphasising that the club prioritised preventing a recurrence of his injury. “Osimhen has only recently recovered from injury, so we needed to manage his workload carefully. We also had to consider the welfare of players returning from international commitments,” he added. Osimhen will be pleased with his comeback from injury and will aim to maintain his impressive form throughout the 2026/2027 season. Before his injury, the Nigerian forward had scored six goals and provided two assists in four matches against Corum FK, Erzurumspor FK, Göztepe and Istanbul Başakşehir.

target=_blank>Eyes on FIFA, NFF over fresh controversy on Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup failure
This week, reports claimed that FIFA had found Congo DR goalkeeper, Lionel Mpasi ineligible three months before the 2026 World Cup. It was discovered that Mpasi had not completed the process of switching his international allegiance from France where he had represented the youth teams. FIFA reportedly became aware of this in March but took no action against Congo DR. “‘Absurd’ is the first word that came to mind,” Ope Adebari, a sports analyst, reporter and producer with News Central, told DAILY POST. “Did FIFA really not sanction an ineligible player and his team despite the evidence staring them in the face? “It’s very difficult to process and come to terms with. Further clarity is needed regarding this debacle.” The Leopards went on to defeat Jamaica in the intercontinental play-off and featured in the World Cup, reaching the round of 32, where Mpasi played in their defeat to England. Nigeria had missed out on the intercontinental play-off after losing to Congo DR in the African play-off final in November. Afterwards, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged a complaint with the world football governing body, alleging that Congo DR had fielded between six and nine ineligible players. The petition was dismissed on a technicality. “Certain reports say Nigeria sent the appeal to the wrong email, while verified sources confirm that FIFA failed to sanction DR Congo despite the evidence it had. “I think both parties can be blamed,” Adebari said. However, even with this fresh twist to the saga, did the Super Eagles truly deserve to be at the World Cup? “With all due respect to Nigeria, given the inconsistent performances under Eric Chelle, there’s no guarantee that the Super Eagles would have secured qualification for the World Cup. “Simply put, no. I don’t think Nigeria deserved to be at the 2026 World Cup,” Adebari said. FIFA has already said it “strongly rejects these unfounded allegations” concerning Mpasi’s eligibility, adding that its president, Gianni Infantino, had no role in any decisions. It has also denied that the matter had anything to do with supporting Veron Mosengo-Omba, the former FIFA secretary general who is now president of the Congolese federation. There have been whispers that the NFF is exploring legal options and may seek compensation. However, Adebari does not expect much to come of the matter. He said: “I sincerely believe we will get back to business as usual, and nothing will happen.”
