Dowen College: Family Of Deceased 12-year-old Pupil, Sylvester Accuses Nigerian Bar Association Representative, Others Of Frustrating Coroner’s Inquest

The family of the deceased 12-year-old pupil of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, allegedly tortured to death by some senior students who wanted to initiate him into a cult group, has raised the alarm over an alleged plot to unnecessarily delay proceedings at the coroner’s inquest into his death.

According to the Oromoni’s family, there is a plot to frustrate them from seeking justice.

Specifically, the family indicted the representative of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in the court proceedings, one Bernard Onigah, who it claimed was been used to create confusion at every court sitting just to ensure that the Coroner never arrived at a conclusion to make its final report based on findings and substantial evidence at its disposal.

Consequently, the father of the deceased, Mr. Sylvester Oromoni, who spoke with journalists in Warri at the weekend, urged the leadership of the NBA to withdraw its representative, Onigah, from the court proceedings in order to allow the Coroner to carry out its job diligently, so as to arrive at a conclusion in bringing out its report on the matter early enough.

He stated that the failure of the NBA leadership to continue to keep Onigah as its representative in the court would be interpreted as complicity on the part of the body to frustrate the proceedings, thereby prolonging sittings in order to deny the family the justice craved over their son’s death.

In the meantime, Sylvester Oromoni has appealed to Nigerians to keep the faith with the family, as they would not relent in their efforts until they secure justice for their late son who was alleged to have been tortured by a gang of senior students before being released to die some days later.

While assuring that no level of frustration can make the family abandon the cause of justice for their son, Oromoni noted that the family was determined to seek justice even if it’s going to take them another three decades.

According to him, from the events of the past few weeks at the Coroner inquest, we can draw a conclusion that some parties in the case have resulted in using one Bernard Onigah, a representative of the NBA in the matter to buy more time by causing confusion and unnecessary setback at every sitting in order to delay its report and frustrate the family.

He said, “We, the members of the Oromoni family, hereby urged the leadership of the NBA to immediately withdraw its representative, Bernard Onigah from the Coroner, in order to assist in making the court draw conclusions based on findings and present its report appropriately.

“I wish to state categorically that failure of NBA leadership to withdraw Bernard Onigah from the panel after this passionate appeal would be interpreted as complicity on the part of its leadership to continue to frustrate the court proceedings through its representative who had been causing confusion and dragging the court back.

“We are not unmindful of the fact that NBA representatives just like other bodies were supposed to play an observer role in the inquest proceedings but to our greatest surprise, the said Bernard Onigah has assumed the role of a Defence counsel in the case by raising issues that tend to frustrate proceedings in order to buy time before the Coroner.

“However, we want to appeal to Nigerians to keep the faith alive with the Oromoni family and wish to thank everyone who stood by us during our trying period last December when we lost our Dear promising son, Sylvester Oromini Jnr, to the cold hand of death as a result of complications from the torture he received while in school.

“We assured everyone that we will continue to remain focused on the case and no amount of plots to frustrate or discourage us would succeed, as we are determined more than ever before to get justice for our late son even if it would take us another 30 years to achieve this, we are prepared.”

He lamented the present situation where those alleged to have masterminded and carried out the torture that led to the death of his son had resumed a new academic session in the same school, Dowen College, while his son remained lifeless in the mortuary.
He stated that no frustration would deter him from getting justice for his late son.

The family had accused five students of Dowen College namely Kenneth Inyang, Ansel Temile, Edward Begue, Michael Kashamu, and Benjamin Favour of being involved in torturing Sylvester, who later died.

Ekweremadu and Nobody By Bunmi Makinwa

Bunmi Makinwa

Two photos were to be identified on the screen of the phone. There were four Nigerians at the location in Maryland, USA. Without hesitation, three of the Nigerians identified the photo of the gentleman in suit and red tie – Ike Ekweremadu. A question followed – Is that the boy in question?
The name of the boy in question is Ukpo Nwamini David.

Bunmi Makinwa

The media space has been dominated recently by news of former Deputy Senate President, Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu versus Ukpo David, an unknown and Nobody. In the scene somewhere is also Sonia Ekweremadu, a daughter of the Ekweremaduswhose need for kidney to save her life led to the big news.
Ike Ekweremadu, 60, in his social media spaces describes himself as politician, lawyer, philanthropist, among others. Having been in the senate for almost 20 years, he occupies one of the highest heights of political power and influence. And being wealthy comes with it.
The factual barebones of the available information are that the United Kingdom (UK) government arrested the Ekweremadu couple allegedly for luring Ukpo David to the country to harvest his kidney under false pretext. The Ekweremadus have denied the allegation.
The arrest of the prominent Nigerians and allegation has generated controversy – support for Ekweremadu and claims that the process of bringing Ukpo David to the UK for the kidney transplant operation was done appropriately against those who say that Ukpo David was naïve, poor and tricked and misled to a life-threatening surgery.
There are many issues that arise and this article will look into some of them, especially to draw lessons for the political leadership of Nigeria. The UK courts will decide the case.
Quite as expected, the media, including social media, has been dominated by positive stories in support of Ekweremadus. The narratives use facts drawn from just about anywhere to show that nothing untoward was done, especially by the parents who wanted only to preserve the life of their daughter, Sonia.
The stories are highly biased and reflect one-sided use of the media in favour of the strong, powerful and wealthy. It may create public sympathy for the Ekweremadus in Nigeria. But it will have little or no influence on the legal issues and the court case in UK.
The list of politicians who have expressed support for the Ekweremadus keeps growing. You may count Senator Smart Adeyemi, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Femi Fani-Kayode, Joe Igbokwe… Such support is predictable. By attempting to drown out David Ukpo, a voiceless Nobody, the Ekweremadus’ group lends stronger credence to the song, “Poor Man No get Brother”. But it does not add new facts or legal strength to the real issues.
The best lawyers available in Nigeria and the UK will represent the Ekweremadus. If the couple is found guilty, the jail time will be long. Of course, no amount of funds or effort will be spared to save the Ekweremadus from possible imprisonment.
However, Ukpo David, who won’t have money or wealthy friends, will be represented by UK’s prosecuting attorneys whose main aim is to carry out their jobs properly. Where there are systems, and processes are clear and well established, the ability to influence outcomes is very little. Nigeria’s political leadership does not understand such a situation and will throw out more and more money only to find out at the end that there is no hiding place. It has happened in the past to Nigerian politicians or rich people who faced justice in UK.
There are a number of pro-Ekweremadu arguments that should be examined. One of them is that Ukpo David is not under-age as claimed and that he voluntarily accepted to donate his kidney to Sonia through the planned surgery. He has used the Ekweremadu family to get into UK and wants to stay there hence the change of mind, somepeople argue.
The stated consent is explained from the side of the Ekweremadus. We are yet to see such clear evidence of consent whether written, video or audio. The voiceless Nobody is yet to speak directly on the issues.
The crushing poverty, deprivation and hopelessness of the youth population in Nigeria is palpable. I do not see howany young person in a similar situation to Ukpo David  would not take advantage of being in Europe to attempt to have temporary, and ultimately permanent resident statusin any European country. The political leadership that has misruled Nigeria and whose children do not get educated in Nigeria nor want to stay there, cannot force the young generation to stay either.
If Ukpo David has indeed defrauded the Ekweremadus as alleged by spokespersons and friends of theirs, then UkpoDavid has learned from the best how to exploit others. Those who defraud Nigeria every hour are the political leaders of Nigeria. The younger generation may end up taking back their resources from their leaders through any means possible – good, bad and ugly.
While the noise and arguments and legal wrangle go on, Sonia Ekweremadu, whose kidney is failing, has been pushed to the background. Nigeria’s political leadership continues to go abroad for medical care. The ordinary citizens and workers are condemned to poor services, un-serviceable machines and under-paid medical staff in public health facilities.
Private medical care is very expensive due to a host of reasons including lack of electric power, high costs of purchasing equipment, expensive security protection and continuous exodus of trained medical personnel out of the country.
The price of failed leadership affects us all, sooner or later, and our privileges cannot save us.
Bunmi Makinwa is the CEO of AUNIQUEI Communication for Leadership. Previously, he was Africa Regional Director of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

Anglican Church Tasks Christian Association Of Nigeria To Develop Strategy To Counter Alleged Jihadist Agenda

The Enugu Diocese of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to develop a strategy to counter an alleged Jihadist agenda in the country.

The Church made the call on Sunday at end of the Second Session of the 18th Synod of the Diocese held at All Saints Anglican Church, GRA, Enugu.

It decried the incessant attacks on the people of Southern Kaduna and parts of the Middle Belt region, describing them as genocide operations going while the government tags them as clashes.

In an 11-point communique issued by the Synod, the church stated that the worsening insecurity, killings, kidnappings and increased attacks on churches and Christians without effective response from the Nigerian government are serious indications that the alleged Islamisation agenda is real.

The communique was signed by the Archbishop/Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma; the Chancellor, Prof. Offornze Amucheazi (SAN); the Registrar, HBC Ogboko and the Synod Secretary, Ven. Dr Stanley Nweze.

The Synod while reminding the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari of the purpose of section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 constitution as amended on security and welfare of the people said, “the security situation in our country is worse than ever be imagined as terrorists and other non-state actors have continued to unleash great terror on poor and hungry Nigerians with no part of the country able to boast of being safe anymore.”

It further said, “The Synod notes that the rise in the activities of ritual killers, kidnappers, armed Fulani militias, bandits, insurgents and terrorists all over our country is a great cause for concern as the value of life in Nigeria is at its lowest ebb.

“The Synod further reminds the President that many Nigerian citizens, including victims of the Abuja train attack, the Chibok girls, Dapchi student, Leah Sharibu who refused to deny her faith, and many other kidnapped Nigerians are still in captivity.

“The Synod is dismayed by the atrocities of terrorists and the so-called bandits in the North and the continued killings by the armed Fulani militias in the South which have greatly affected our farmers and prevented them from working on their farms. The Synod reminds the government of President Muhammadu Buhari that these terrorists have indeed crossed the red line and should be decisively dealt with by crushing them without further delay.”

The Synod also decried the manner in which money exchanged hands during the presidential primaries of the two leading political parties (All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party), noting it gave undue advantage to the highest bidder.

It also described as condemnable the killing of three persons in Ogbede Mgbuji, Eha Amufu community in Isi Uzo Local Government Area, Enugu State and the abduction of 19 people at Ikem Community on Monday, June 13, over which it urged security agencies to fish out and prosecute the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

On the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) strike, the Synod called on the government to give urgent and holistic attention to issues on the table to avert the decaying standard of the education system.

Group Accuses Nigerian Minister Of Water Resources, Adamu, Of Covering Up Corruption, Stealing Of Funds In Ministry

The Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Hussein Adamu has been accused of covering up for the Managing Director of Lower Niger River Basin, Dr Aremu Saheed who has been accused of corruption and misappropriation of funds.

A group seeking to improve agricultural development in Nigeria, Agric Watch, has accused the minister of sharing proceeds of corruption with Saheed.

It also expressed its displeasure with the alleged nonchalant attitude of the minister towards the allegations against Saheed.

The group made this known in a letter obtained by SaharaReporters, addressed to the Minister of Water Resources and jointly signed by the group Coordinator and its scribe, Alhassan T. Mohammed and Bode Seun respectively.

In the letter, the group claimed the minister sent a team headed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry to the organisation, to either intimidate or financially induce the staff union -Nigeria Union of Agric and Allied Employees, to drop their stance and allegations against their managing director.

It called for the removal of Saheed over allegations bordering on corruption, misappropriation of funds and budgetary allocations and maladministration.

The letter reads in part, “Our organisation saw the several publications of the Agriculture Union on several media forum on the call for the removal of the Managing Director of Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, one Dr Saheed Aremu over allegations bordering on corruption, misappropriation of funds and budgetary allocations and maladministration.

“We decided to set up a team of private investigators to proceed to Kwara state to investigate the allegations by visiting the project sites and even to the Auditor General’s office to enquire about the authenticity of the Auditors report that damningly indicts the Managing Director.

“Honourable Minister sir, our organisation which is made up of professionals and stakeholders in the Agric sector, including Agro media advocates across Nigeria saddled with the mandate of ensuring transparency and justice in the Agricultural sector and reputed for tracking Budgetary allocations has its searchlight specifically on the ministries of Agriculture and that of Water Resources.

“Having observed the efforts of President Mohammed Buhari, GCFR, in pumping funds to the sector but with minimal effect due to various corrupt practices of the ministry officers and the Chief Executives of the Agencies and Parastatals, we are poised to ensure justice by exposing the culprits and bringing them to book through all legal means and the Anti-corruption agencies.

“Honourable Ministers sir, we are displeased with your nonchalant attitude towards the allegations and the character of the Managing Director, rather, you sent your high-powered ministerial team headed by the Permanent Secretary to the organisation, to either intimidate and financially induce the Staff Union -Nigeria Union of Agric and Allied Employees, to drop their stance and claims against their Managing Director.

“This your action is regrettably inimical to the anti-corruption stance of this administration and federal constitution which you swore to uphold. These your action is giving credence to insinuations that Dr Aremu Saheed, the Managing Director of Lower Niger River Basin has been sharing the proceeds of his corruption with you.

“We are likewise disappointed in the Staff Union for falling for your inducement and harassment wherein they dropped their noble cause of embarking on the threat of Labour action to press home her demands for justice.

“Honourable Minister sir, by our investigation we have therefore concluded to advise as follows:

“We demand a thorough investigation of the activities of the entire River Basins Developments across Nigeria, to see if funds provided over the period of this administration are spent justifiably in consonance with the administration’s policy of transparency

“That Dr Saheed Aremu lacks the moral right to continue in office based on the said Auditors report and other allegations.

“That Dr Saheed Aremu must be excused from executing this year’s budgetary allocation.

“That the appropriate anti-corruption agencies should be invited for further investigation be prosecuted and monies recovered and plunged back to the sector.”

“That the ministry should overhaul the activities of River Basins Development Authorities in Nigeria for effective service, according to its mandate.

“Honourable Minister sir, If necessary action is not taken as advised above, we shall be compelled to approach the court as taxpayers and law-abiding patriotic citizens of Nigeria,” the letter added.

EXCLUSIVE: How Pastor’s Son Allegedly Butchered Girlfriend, Dumped Remains Near River In Abuja

The son of a pastor allegedly killed and dismembered the body of his girlfriend, simply identified as Anita, and dumped her remains near a river in Abuja, SaharaReporters exclusively gathered on Sunday.
SaharaReporters on Monday, June 20, 2022, reported how the remains of an unidentified young woman were packed inside two bags and dumped by unknown persons near a river at PW in the Kubwa area of Abuja.

The incident which caused tension and pandemonium in the area attracted a large crowd of residents who thronged the scene to catch a glimpse of the dismembered body.
Findings revealed that a young man, Kelechi Amadi, the son of the Pastor of Freedom Chapel Int’l Church, located in Gbazango, Kubwa on Sunday, June 19 at about 11:00 pm asked a tricycle rider to come to his house and take him for a short trip.
Unknown to the tricycle rider, Kelechi was said to have put the remains of his girlfriend in the bags after he had cut off her head, removed all her sensitive organs and chopped other parts into pieces for ritual purposes.

It was learnt that upon getting to his house, Kelechi brought out two bags which he claimed contained some trash he wanted to dispose of along the road.
A reliable source who spoke to SaharaReporters said shortly after embarking on the trip and upon arriving at PW bridge, he told the rider that he wanted to dump the refuse near the river.
At that point, the tricycle rider was said to have noticed bloodstains on the bags but still did not suspect they could contain human parts.
The source said, “When the driver got home, he cleaned the bloodstains on his tricycle because he did not suspect it was human blood and he continued with his work the following day.
“But when he was passing through the same route, he saw a large crowd on the bridge and stopped. He made an enquiry to know what happened and they narrated to him that somebody dropped two bags containing the dead body of a lady that had been cut into pieces.”

It was at that point that he remembered he dropped a man at the same spot with the same bags the previous night.
It was gathered that the tricycle rider hurriedly rushed to the chairman of the tricycle riders’ union and notified him of the development. The leadership of the tricycle association in the area, therefore, reported the matter at Kubwa Divisional Police Headquarters.
The tricycle rider eventually led a team of detectives to the house of Kelechi.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Kubwa Divisional Police Headquarters before being transferred to the FCT Police Command, Garki for further investigation.
SaharaReporters however gathered that the suspect has confessed to the crime.
Meanwhile, the police had sealed off the church and the scene of the crime when SaharaReporters visited the area on Sunday.
The FCT Police Command on Thursday, June 23 in a statement by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Oduniyi Omotayo said the Tactical and Intelligence team had arrested a suspect in connection with the crime.
He said an investigation was ongoing to unravel other facts surrounding the incident and would be communicated to the press later.

Nigerian Anti-narcotics Agency, NDLEA Arrests Brazilian Returnee Who Hid Cocaine In Private Parts

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested a Brazilian returnee, Igwedum Uche at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos with pellets of cocaine concealed in his private parts.

Igwedum, according to a statement from the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, was arrested on Monday, June 20 as he arrived from Sao Paulo via the Ethiopian Airlines.

The suspect was said to have swallowed 50 wraps of cocaine before departing Brazil and excreted 48 pellets in Addis Ababa after which he handed them over to another person.

He claimed he was unable to excrete the remaining two wraps at the hotel room in Addis Ababa before boarding his flight but later excreted them in the aircraft restroom during the flight from Ethiopia to Lagos.

Babafemi added that operatives of the NDLEA also, on Saturday, June 25 arrested a drug kingpin, Onyekachi Chukwuma Macdonald after his Methamphetamine (Mkpuru Mmiri) consignment was intercepted.

Onyekachi had attempted to export 40 parcels of the drug locally to London, United Kingdom through NAHCO.

A statement from the NDLEA noted, “Onyekachi was arrested at Manacola estate, Alakuko area of Lagos at the weekend, three weeks after his Mkpuru Mmiri consignment weighing 2.05 kilograms was intercepted at the airport and his freight agent, Peter Christopher Anikan arrested on 7th June.

“During his interview, the suspect said he’s from Ahiazu, Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo state and had lived in Dubai, UAE for 10 years before returning to Nigeria in 2019.

“He stated that after his return to Nigeria he opened a phone accessories shop in Sango Otta, Ogun state but the business collapsed. He then started sending cigarettes to London and decided to conceal the illicit drug in the consignment after advice by a friend.

“Closely related is the seizure of another consignment of 2kg Mkpuru Mmiri at a courier house in Owerri, Imo state.

“The cargo seized on Wednesday 22nd June had ankara and lace fabrics in which two cylindrical cellophanes containing the drug heading to Hong Kong were concealed.”

The Chairman of the NDLEA, Mohamed Buba Marwa lauded the efforts of the operatives for the clampdown on drug lords particularly arrests of those who thought they could evade the long arm of the law.

He encouraged them and their compatriots across other formations to intensify their efforts toward achieving set goals.
