E2%80%99-registration-no-longer-ending-june-30-%E2%80%93-nigerian-electoral-body-inec Voters’ Registration No Longer Ending On June 30 – Nigerian Electoral Body, INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing continuous voter registration (CVR), which was initially scheduled to end on June 30, 2022.Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the commission, announced a continuation of the exercise during the Youth Vote Count concert at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja, on Saturday, Daily Trust reports.

Yakubu said, “The youths want to know when the registration will end. I want to assure you on behalf of the commission that the registration won’t end on June 30 for as long as we have people trying to register, we will continue to register you.“In the last five days, we have registered over 14,000 Nigerians in this place alone. We have about 50 voter registration machines. For as long as people have been trying to register to obtain your PVC, we will continue to register you and we will continue to make sure that you get your PVC.”A Federal High Court in Abuja had stopped INEC from ending the ongoing voter registration exercise. The court presided by Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon on Monday granted an order of interim injunction restraining INEC from implementing its June 30 deadline. The court granted the order after hearing an ex parte motion by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and 185 concerned Nigerians.SERAP and the other plaintiffs had moved to restrain INEC from stopping the voter registration exercise after the Commission extended the deadline for the conduct of primaries by political parties by six days.In the suit FHC/L/CS/1034/2022 which was filed against INEC at the Federal High Court, Lagos and transferred to Abuja, SERAP asked the court to declare the voter registration deadline as illegal and unconstitutional. The group asked the court to “declare unconstitutional, illegal, and incompatible with international standards the failure of the electoral body to extend the deadline for voter registration to allow eligible Nigerians to exercise their rights”.

Nigerian Youths Kick As BBC Yoruba Excludes YPP Candidate, Bayonle From Osun Governorship Debate

Some youths in Osun State have expressed their displeasure with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Yoruba following the alleged exclusion of the gubernatorial candidate of the Young Progressive Party, Ademola Bayonle (DAB) from the debate scheduled for June 30.The youths claimed that the 35-year-old medical doctor who is running on the platform of YPP has a visible campaign in the state with a formidable structure of majorly young people across the state.

They noted that in a recent poll conducted by Osun Situation Room, Bayonle came third with a close margin right after the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gboyega Oyetola, the incumbent. Also, while speaking to SaharaReporters on Saturday, Bayonle lamented the position of the media towards credible candidates like him as he alleged that his counterparts did not get to share the same platform with “people who have a golden handcuffs to give.”He listed the lack of media recognition as a major challenge to his campaign efforts despite his “innovative ideas to put the state on the map.”Bayonle said when he was briefed about the development by his teeming supporters, he wrote to the BBC Bureau in Lagos, to understand the parameters of their selections, but he was ignored. He said this proved that the “platform is either complicit or has been pocketed by desperate politicians who find the youth energy and superior ideas for the state challenging to their mediocrity.”He alleged that there seemed to be a deliberate imposition of recycled old men on the people of Osun State by the media.

Rights Activist, Ayomipe Jatto Raises Alarm, Says Dismissed Police Superintendent, Adedokun After His Life

A human rights activist, Ayomipe Jatto has raised the alarm that a dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Police and former Head of Magodo Police Post, Lagos State, Sunday Adedokun, is after his life.Jatto alleged that Adedokun, who accused him of being behind his dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force, has allegedly engaged cultists and armed them with his picture to track and kill him.

Although after saying he had no hand in Adedokun’s dismissal from the Force, Jatto wondered why the former police officer should be coming after him as if he was a member of the Police Service Commission that took the decision to terminate his appointment.Jatto, who shared his ordeal with SaharaReporters on Friday, said he miraculously escaped assassination twice – June 22 and 24, 2022.According to him, the current trouble started when the leader of the said cult group was arrested along with some of his boys; they were denied bail after intervention of the Force Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi.Narrating the incident that led to the dismissed police coming after him, Jatto said “on June 22, 2022 a group of boys believed to be cultists sent by a dismissed police officer, ASP Sunday Adedokun, made an attempt on my life. They equally made a second attempt on life on Friday night. ASP Adedokun was formerly the officer-in-charge of Magodo Police Post in Lagos before he was dismissed from the police due to his questionable character.”So, I spoke against these malicious accusations they levelled against me; about influencing their arrest and speaking bad about them which I vehemently rejected. So I challenged them immediately, defended myself, recorded the clip and I told them that I was going to report them to the Lagos State Police Command.”The next day, Adedokun sent a gang of three well known cultists to threaten me not to report them at the Lagos State Police Command because the then Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman, PPRO Bala Elkana had warned that he must not get any report from that particular police post again which might lead to the permanent closure of this particular police post.”So during the argument and the confrontation, he sent the cultists on 13th of August 2020. They threatened to shoot me in the Estate but because of tight security they were unable to do that. They kept on threatening me that I must not say anything, that the clip that is with me should be deleted. That I must not report anything they had said or anything like that.”He, however, noted that a journalist who was passing saw when they were threatening him and intervened. “So, after briefly explaining to him the issues, he pleaded with them to resolve it and allow me to go. After he left, Adedokun with his boys kept on threatening that I must not report the incident to the then PPRO, Elkana.”That was on August 12, 2020. So I reached out to the FPPRO Muyiwa Adejobi reporting the unprofessional act of the dismissed officer which later led to the arrest of the cult leader and some of the boys the dismissed police officer sent which the DPO, Isheri supervising the police post refused them bail.“So this sparked more controversy and outrage and made me their target. So on the 22nd of June 2022 there was an attempt on my life around Arepo Ogun state. Currently as I speak, I am not safe, but I believe in the protection of God. I believe as a law abiding citizen, as a human right activist, as a media entrepreneur I strongly believe Nigeria should be a safe place for everyone. Police brutality shouldn’t be condoned.”
