E2%80%93-amnesty-international-condemns-catholic Gunmen Enjoying Impunity, On Rampage Across Nigeria – Amnesty International Condemns Catholic Church Killings In Ondo

Global human rights body, Amnesty International, on Monday stated that the terrorists’ attack on a church in Owo, Ondo State, confirms the impunity being enjoyed by gunmen who are on the rampage across Nigeria.
The group asserted that the incident was a wake-up call to the authorities, who must now do everything they could to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime face justice.

Amnesty International’s Nigeria Director, Osai Ojigho, made this known via her Twitter handle, while reacting to the killing of more than 40 worshippers, including women and children, at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo on Sunday.
In a tweet titled, “Nigeria: Perpetrators of St. Francis Church shooting must face justice,” Amnesty noted that the victims and their families have a right to know the truth about this shooting and to be provided with justice and reparations.
It called on the Nigerian judicial authorities to immediately launch a thorough and impartial investigation to identify the perpetrators of this crime, and to prosecute and judge them in fair trials, without recourse to the death penalty.
“What happened in Owo reveals the impunity enjoyed by gunmen on the rampage across Nigeria. This tragic event should offer a wake-up call for the authorities, who must now do everything they can to ensure the perpetrators of this appalling crime face justice.
“This brutal attack shows a complete disregard for the right to life. Under international human rights law, the Nigerian authorities have a duty to protect the right to life of its people in all circumstances.
“Victims and their families have a right to know the truth about this shooting and to be provided with justice and reparations. Amnesty International is calling on the Nigerian judicial authorities to immediately launch a thorough and impartial investigation to identify the perpetrators of this crime, and to prosecute and judge them in fair trials, without recourse to the death penalty,” the tweet reads.

Ruling APC Northern Governors Meet Buhari, Insist On Southern Presidential Candidate, Reject Governor Yahaya Bello

Hours before the start of the ruling All Progressives Convention, northern governors of the All Progressives Congress have met with President Muhammadu Buhari, maintaining their stand to zone the party’s presidential ticket to the south.
The majority of the Northern APC governors had earlier called on the party to pick its presidential candidate from Southern Nigeria.

Fourteen of the APC’s 22 state governors govern states in Northern Nigeria.
According to a communiqué signed after the meeting, the governors said, “After a careful deliberation, we wish to state our firm conviction that after eight years in the office of President Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC for the 2023 elections should be one of our teeming members from the southern states of Nigeria.
“It is a question of honour for the APC, an obligation that is not in any way affected by the decisions taken by another political party.”
Speaking on behalf of the governors, Simon Lalong of Plateau State regretted that the communiqué from the meeting got leaked to the public before they officially informed the President of their resolution.

He, however, noted that the governors had to inform the President in person as part of last-minute preparations for tomorrow’s primary elections.
Asked why their Kogi State counterpart, Bello, was absent from the meeting, a distraught governor El-Rufai (of Kaduna) said it was not compulsory for all 14 of them to agree on the southern ticket.
According to him, Bello had excused himself from the meeting with the President because he rejected the resolution made by the governors.

BREAKING: Buhari To Deny He Anointed Senate President, Lawan As Consensus Candidate, He Only Confided In APC Chairman – Presidency Source

President Muhammadu Buhari will deny that he endorsed Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as the ruling All Progressives Congress consensus candidate as part of the gimmicks being played by his government, presidency sources have told SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters learnt that Buahri indeed confided in the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, that Lawan was his choice but never instructed him to make it public.

“Buhari will deny that he anointed Senate President, Lawan as consensus candidate. Although Buhari confided in Adamu, that he prefers Lawan, he didn’t tell him to announce it.

“Governors had pigeon-holed Buhari by asking the presidency to go to the South and Kaduna Governor, (Nasir) El- Rufai got wind of it and leaked their position to the press to pressurise Buhari not to endorse Lawan,” one of the top sources revealed.

Earlier, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) announced Senate President Lawan as the consensus presidential candidate of the party.

Adamu made the announcement at the meeting of National Working Committee (NWC) on Monday in Abuja.

Gunmen Renew Attacks On Enugu Community, Kill One, Raze Houses

Hoodlums on Monday killed a man identified as Dennis Ike and burnt houses in renewed communal crisis in Oruku in the Nkanu East local government area of Enugu State.
SaharaReporters gathered that the assailants laid an ambush in the community in the early hours of Monday and shot dead Ike before proceeding to set ablaze the family houses of some persons including one Okechukwu Ukeh.

A community leader, who wants to remain anonymity, told SaharaReporters that the hoodlums woke the residents with sporadic gunshots around 5:30am on Monday.
He said that the deceased (Ike) was going out with his motorbike for the day’s business before he was gunned down by the assailants who set his motorcycle and corpse ablaze.
He said, “We were woken up again this morning by the heavy sound of gunfire which forced many residents to remain indoors for several hours before security operatives arrived in the community. We came out only to see the corpse of the young man and his burnt motorcycle. The gunmen fled before the policemen arrived.”
Oruku and Umuode communities have been in crisis for several years while the Enugu State Government attempted to settle the dispute by demarcating their boundary, which was in contention.
This was recommended by a Judicial Panel of Enquiry, but some aggrieved members of Oruku, who were opposed to the terms of settlement with Umuode, have continued to foment trouble in their own community.
Several lives and property have been lost to the conflict as some young men believed to have been armed by some politicians in Oruku have continued to attack their kinsmen who were allegedly marked for elimination for agreeing to settle the dispute with their Umuode neighbours.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Daniel Ndukwe, could not be reached for his comments on the incident at the time of filling this report as his phone was not reachable.
However, some policemen deployed to the area were seen in a viral video trying to move the corpse of the deceased to the mortuary.

E2%80%93-islamic-group-muric Owo Church Killings: Bandits Are The Culprits, Not Northerners In Ondo State – Islamic Group, MURIC

The Muslim Right Concerns Group, otherwise known as MURIC led by Prof Ishaq Akintola, has again condemned the horrible killing of members of the congregation of St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State on Sunday.
Akintola stated in a release on Monday that there was no tribal and political motivation for the Sunday terrorists’ attack.

The group further alleged that the terrorists were influenced lately to carry out several attacks nationwide due to the ransom money usually being paid by abductees.
The statement reads in part, “From all indications, it now looks more like a bandits’ attack particularly after learning that the attackers also kidnapped some people. Pecuniary gain may therefore be the motive behind the attack. The fact that the same bandits have been attacking both mosques and churches while killing and kidnapping both Muslims and Christians necessitates caution.
“The Hausa communities that are being attacked are also victims of banditry in their states. Those Northerners who have been attacked or who are already being targeted in Ondo State and other places are therefore not the culprits.
“The motive of the bandits is the money they hope to get from the families of their kidnapped victims. Churches, mosques, schools, trains, buses, etc are usually attacked by them because they see those places not only as soft targets but also as places where they can get large numbers of people. The higher the number of victims the bigger the expected ransom; they make their attacks as ferocious as possible in order to create fear in the hearts of people.”
The statement continued: “We call on the good people of Nigeria to come together against men of evil. We must know the difference between religion, ethnicity and crime. Let us not identify criminals by their tribes or their faiths in order not to hurt innocent people.
“Those who committed this atrocity inside the church have lost their humanity. It must be noted that they are under the influence of narcotics. They are not even ordinary agents of Shaytan but Shaytan incarnate. Both Christians and Muslims must unite to device means of overpowering them.
“The information paraphernalia at both the federal and state levels should be set in motion to create awareness of the danger of reprisal attacks for fear of the bandwagon effect it may generate.
“MURIC reminds Nigerians that justice is a square peg. Vengeance is a round hole. The two cannot match. What you seek to get is not what you achieve and the cycle of violence can go on ad infinitum until it gets back to those who initiated it.
“Worse still, reprisal attacks may lead to war. Let us learn from Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan. Rockets are still falling on Ukranian infrastructure. It is painful watching the fast destruction of civilisation on such massive scale. We therefore appeal to all and sundry to leave this matter in the hands of the security agencies.
“We are waiting for swift action from the Federal Government (FG). Compensation should be paid to the bereaved families. Those injured should be treated at FG’s expense while the cost of repairing the church should be taken up by FG. Besides, the state government should be forthcoming in terms of hospitality towards the victims’ families and trauma management by experts. They must be made to feel the presence of government.
“We advise the leadership of the Muslim community in Owo, Ondo State to initiate sympathy and courtesy visits to St. Francis Catholic Church. We must forge unity at a time enemies of peace have done their worst. Let us defeat public enemies with exchanges of neighbourliness.”
