Eleven northern governors have backed a southern aspirant for the ruling All Progressives Congress.
This led Jigawa State Governor, Abubakar Badaru, to withdraw from the presidential race, according to a statement from the governors on Saturday night.

The governors who signed the statement include; Bello Masari, Katsina; Nasir El-Rufai, Kaduna; Atiku Bagudu, Kebbi; Simon Lalong, Plateau; Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano; Bello Matawalle, Zamfara; Inuwa Yahaya, Gombe; Babagana Zulum, Borno; Sani Bello, Niger; and Abdullahi Sule, Nasarawa.

Here is the Full Statement by Northern States’ APC Governors and Political Leaders

APC governors and political leaders from the northern states of Nigeria today met to review the political situation and to further support our Party in providing progressive leadership amidst our national challenges. During our discussions, we welcomed President Muhammadu Buhari’s invitation to governors and other stakeholders to contribute to the emergence of a strong presidential candidate for the APC.
After careful deliberation, we wish to state our firm conviction that after eight years in office of President Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC for the 2023 elections should be one of our teeming members from the southern states of Nigeria. It is a question of honour for the APC, an obligation that is not in anyway affected by the decisions taken by another political party. We affirm that upholding this principle is in the interest of building a stronger, more united and more progressive country.
We therefore wish to strongly recommend to President Muhammadu Buhari that the search for a successor as the APC’s presidential candidate be limited to our compatriots from the southern states. We appeal to all aspirants from the northern states to withdraw in the national interest and allow only the aspirants from the south to proceed to the primaries. We are delighted by the decision of our esteemed colleague, His Excellency, Governor Abubakar Badaru to contribute to this patriotic quest by withdrawing his presidential aspiration.
The APC has a duty to ensure that the 2023 elections offer a nation-building moment, reaffirming that a democratic pathway to power exists for all who value cooperation and build national platforms. This moment calls for the most sober and inclusive approach to selecting our party’s candidate, and we call on all APC leaders to fulfil their responsibility in this regard.

Buhari Government, Nigerian Army Must Fish Out Security Personnel Aiding Killings, Kidnapping In South-East – Civil Societies

Some notable civil society organisations in Nigeria have called for thorough investigations into the alleged involvement of Nigerian military personnel in violent crimes across the country.
In a statement jointly signed by the CSOs, they noted that the increasing cases of kidnapping for ransom in the Okigwe axis of Abia State and the South-East region in general were a major source of concern particularly now that security agents had been fingered in the crimes.

Recall that a Methodist Prelate, His Eminence Samuel Uche, his chaplain, Very Rev. Abidemi Shittu, and the Bishop of Owerri, Rt. Rev. Dennis Mark were abducted last week along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway in the Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.
Uche, who recounted his experience at a press conference held at Methodist Church, Yaba, Lagos State, on Tuesday, alleged that some military personnel from the North were aiding the kidnappers in their activities in the region.
On Wednesday, youths of Isuochi in the Umunneochi Local Government Area of the state, took to the streets to protest against incessant kidnappings by suspected herdsmen in the area.
The embittered youths who decried the menacing activities and atrocities of herdsmen in the area, accused security agents, especially the Nigerian Army of aiding the murderous group on the prowl in the area.
They further demanded that the military checkpoint at Lomara junction should be removed and the barricade by the soldiers blocking the Ihube/Isuochi Road cleared without delay so that motorists will be plying the route again.
The statement released on Saturday was signed by RULAAC; African Centre for Entrepreneurship and Information Development, Abuja; Difference Newspaper; COMPPART Foundation for Justice and Peacebuilding; International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre; Young Innovators and Vocational Training Initiative; Ace and Vanguard Legal Practitioners and Onyigbuo Stephen Uche; Centre for Citizens Right; Human Rights Social Development and Environmental Foundation and Justice and Human Empowerment Centre Nassarawa State.
Others are; Initiative for Social Development in Africa; Nde Oduko Foundation, Jabi, Abuja; Women Literacy and Vocational Development Initiative, Niger State; Justice for Peace and Development Initiative; Legal Resources Consortium; Neighborhood Initiative for Women Advancement; Vision Spring Initiatives; Institutional and Sustainable Development Foundation; Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy; Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development; Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development.
It was also signed by HABITATCARE and Protection Initiative, Owerri Imo state; Bauchi Human Rights Network and Inibehe Effiong.
The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to the protest by the youths and people of Isuochi in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State demanding the removal of military checkpoints in the area since the presence of the military has not improved security in their area but rather seems to provide cover for the criminals.
“We are alarmed by the revelations from the prelate who was kidnapped along with his two colleagues and released after paying huge sums in ransom. But we are even the more alarmed by the revelation from security sources and the victims themselves suggesting that the military are likely to be complicit in the increasing cases of crime in the Okigwe axis.
“We feel ashamed that the Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, who could not do anything and played no role in the release of the kidnapped clerics, could come out to shamelessly claim that the release of the kidnapped victims was by divine intervention. We call on the governor of Abia State to stand up to his responsibility as the Chief Security Officer of the state.
“The Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria had, upon his release by kidnappers, revealed information suggesting the complicity of military personnel in the region in kidnapping.
“In one of the videos in circulation, a senior police officer identified as CSP Johnbull, Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, Abia State also expressed frustration at the role played by personnel of the Nigeria Army in sabotaging the efforts of security forces to combat kidnapping in that axis.
“We call on President Buhari to wake up and to order an investigation into this rather scandalous revelation. We also condemn the decision of the police hierarchy to subject the police officer to harassment or disciplinary action instead of acting on the intelligence information to improve their operations.
“We are further shocked by the revelation that the kidnappers said they are amassing arms with money realized as ransom, with a view to eventually unleashing mayhem and taking over Igboland. This also calls for urgent investigation on the orders of the President.
“The Nigeria Army, in a series of Tweets on their verified Twitter handle titled “Alleged Complicity by Soldiers in Bishop’s Kidnap Unsubstantiated”, have dismissed the allegations even before investigating the alleged role of their personnel. Conclusion on security issues must be based on intelligence and investigation.
“The huge presence of the military in the Southeast region ought to ordinarily ensure maximum security but instead, it seems to be giving cover for criminals to enjoy free reign all over the region.
“We call on the Nigerian Army to objectively and thoroughly investigate the weighty allegations against its personnel in the region rather than engaging in hasty denials and cover up.
“We suspect that the Prelate may be subject of reprisals or victimization for revealing what he heard from the kidnappers and his observations and experience from his ordeal. We call for protection for the Prelate and his colleagues.
“The primary duty of government is the security of lives and property. Therefore, we call on President Muhammadu Buhari to rise up to his duty as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to ensure that the growing security challenges are curtailed.
“We remain committed to constantly monitoring governance and upholding the rule of law and accountability of state officials and institutions to the people.”

E2%80%94-anti-corruption-group-enetsud None Of 24 Kwara State Lawmakers Initiated Bill Since 2019 — Anti-Corruption Group, ENetSuD

A civil society organisation, the Elites Network for Sustainable Development (ENetSuD), has disclosed that none of the 24 serving lawmakers at the Kwara State House of Assembly sponsored a bill at the plenary session since 2019.
According toENetSuD’s report, the 9th assembly has passed a total of 25 bills into law. But strangely 80% (20 out of the 25) were initiated by the state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq.

The report reads, “None of the passed bills in the last 2 years was initiated by 9th KWHA lawmakers – ENetSuD research; 80% of Kwara Laws was proposed by the Governor since 2019.
“The Elites Network for Sustainable Development (ENetSuD), an anti-corruption Civil Society Organisation known to be promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability, has released a part of its novel #KwaraBillsTracker report for the 3rd legislative year of Kwara State House of Assembly (KWHA). The report is the 3rd of its kind since the inauguration of the 9th KWHA.
“In the report, ENetSuD disclosed that the 9th KWHA has passed 25 bills into law since its inauguration. Out of these 25 bills, only 5 were initiated and sponsored by the lawmakers in the first year of the 9th Assembly. These bills are Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) amendment bill 2019 (sponsored by Hon. Muhammad Baba Saliu representing Okuta / Yashikira Constituency), Local Government Miscellaneous Provisions amendment bill 2019 (sponsored by Hon. Abdulganiu Afolabi Salaudeen representing Omupo Constituency), Kwara State University (KWASU) amendment bill 2019 (sponsored by Hon. Aliyu Wahab Opakunle representing Afon Constituency), Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) amendment bill 2019 (sponsored by Hon. Muhammad Baba Saliu representing Okuta / Yashikira Constituency), and Sports Commission bill 2019 (sponsored by Hon. Abubakar Mogaji Olawoyin representing Mogaji Ngeri Constituency).”
“ENetSuD’s report revealed that the remaining 20 bills were proposed by the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as Executive Bills (details available in the attached infographic).
“ENetSuD noted that all the 17 bills out of these 20 bills were passed by the KWHA in the last 2 years (2nd and 3rd years) and they were initiated and proposed by the Governor. This indicates that none of the passed bills were initiated by the lawmakers in the last 2 years,” ENetSuD disclosed.
“ENetSuD calls on the KWHA lawmakers to use the remaining one year to focus on the legislative duties that they were voted for by their constituents, as the last 3 years have not been good enough as far as their legislative performance is concerned,” the report added.

E2%80%93-national-chairman-adamu APC May Punish Tinubu Over Outburst Against Buhari – National Chairman, Adamu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has said the party may punish Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the party, over his comment “against” President Muhammadu Buhari.
When he visited Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Wednesday, Tinubu had told delegates of the ruling party that without him, Buhari would not have been president.

He said after three election loses, Buhari wept and said he would not contest again, but he (Tinubu) went to Katsina State and asked Buhari to run again and that he would win because he and others were on the president’s side.
The comment had sparked negative reactions across the country, with many accusing Tinubu of likening himself to God.
Briefing newsmen at the APC headquarters in Abuja on Saturday, Adamu said, “We may punish him (Tinubu) for his utterances against the President.”
Adamu also said no presidential aspirant had been disqualified from contesting at the party’s presidential primary slated for Monday.
Tinubu had on Thursday while meeting with delegates of the APC in Abeokuta said he made Buhari, Osinbajo and Abiodun President, Vice President and governor respectively.
“You have not heard this from me before. This is the first place I am saying this,” Tinubu who addressed the delegates in Yoruba said.
“If not for me that led the war front, Buhari won’t have emerged. He contested first, second and third times, but lost. He even said on television that he won’t contest again.
“But I went to his home in Katsina, I told him you would contest and win, but you won’t joke with the matters of the Yoruba.
“Since he has emerged I have not been appointed minister. I didn’t get nor request a contract. This time, it’s Yoruba turn and in Yorubaland, it’s my turn,” he said.

E2%80%99s-freedom-detention-%E2%80%93-ipob-warns Stop Ongoing Criminalities If You Want Nnamdi Kanu’s Freedom From Detention – IPOB Warns Trouble Makers In South-East

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged that those responsible for the increasing crime rate in the South-East are those who do not want Nnamdi Kanu out of the detention of the Department of States Services.
IPOB, in a statement by Emma Powerful, its spokesperson, on Saturday alleged that enemies of the region had gone on a killing spree and blame same on the group and its military wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The group said the world should take note that the crimes were usually perpetrated days to the trial of Kanu at the Federal High Court, Abuja to intimidate the judiciary not to release Kanu.
It further alleged that for every attack on strangers in the South-East region, Igbos in the North suffer same fate, they are “stopped on the road, marched out of their vehicles and killed.”
According to the statement, some of the incidents are not reported in the media.
IPOB said, “Biafrans should take cognizance of the timing of these heinous and barbaric acts of violence and murder. Our people and the world community should note that most of these heinous killings happen a few days before our Leader’s court dates. For instance- the army couple, the house of assembly member, the pregnant Hausa woman. These killings could not reasonably have been done or perpetrated by IPOB.
“These atrocities are being committed by people who want to ensure that our leader Mazi Nnamdi KANU doesn’t come out from DSS custody and nobody who is genuinely interested in his release will be involved in these criminalities going on in the South East. How can the killing of our own people whom our leader Mazi Nnamdi is fighting for their liberation and freedom help in securing his release?
“It will only complicate his case and turn our people against him and against the Biafran cause which is what the Nigeria government wants and working with politicians and certain compromised elements in our land through its security agencies and terrorist herdsmen towards.
“Again, these killings are also calculated to intimidate and blackmail the judiciary who might be open to granting him justice because our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has no case to answer.
“How many Nigerian judges do you think would be bold and courageous enough to order the release of a person whose group are accused of killing security operatives and destroying government properties?
“Therefore our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wants any genuine person who genuinely desires his freedom from this hell of torture to stop all forms of criminalities going on in the region and ensure he or she works in tandem with the structure he put in place and joined with them to move this struggle forward.
“The North enjoys such luxuries and criminalities going on here but certainly not Igbos. Can you imagine how difficult it is to get our people in custody released or secure their bail?
“Some of the judges and prosecutors have their relatives who are security operatives who were allegedly killed by people alleged to be IPOB members even though we know they are not IPOB members.
“Each time some of these killings occur in the East, our people are killed in the North, and some are stopped on the road, marched out of their vehicles and killed. These things are usually not reported by media houses in Nigeria.”

BREAKING: Buhari’s Planned Meeting With APC Presidential Aspirants Shifted, President May Announce ‘Anointed’ Candidate

President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari’s planned meeting with the All Progressives Congress’ presidential aspirants has been moved from 7pm to 8.30pm.

The meeting is scheduled to hold at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

President Buhari

SaharaReporters earlier reported that Buhari might announce his preferred candidate during a meeting with the aspirants.

Buhari had left for Ghana earlier today (Saturday) to attend an Extraordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Accra, Ghana.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, had revealed this in a statement titled, ‘President Buhari To Attend ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit in Accra’ which was made available on his Facebook Page on Saturday.

SaharaReporters learnt that at the highly anticipated meeting, Buhari is may announce his anointed candidate and push for a consensus among the aspirants.

“Buhari is calling for a dinner by 7pm tonight to meet with the APC aspirants and there, he might tell them his preferred aspirant,” a top source revealed to SaharaReporters.

Buhari had met with the APC governors on Tuesday ahead of the party’s convention.

During the meeting held at State House, Abuja, Buhari had told the governors that decisions that would enable the party to retain power at the centre should be taken.

The meeting had come amid speculations that the president may anoint an aspirant before the convention.

Apart from former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, other aspirants are the Senate President Ahmad Lawan and former ministers Rotimi Amaechi, Ogbonnaya Onu, Godswill Akpabio, and Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

Serving governors who are also aspiring to be president are Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Ben Ayade (Cross River) and Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa).

Others include former Senate President Ken Nnamani, former House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, and serving senators Ibikunle Amosun, Ajayi Boroffice, and Rochas Okorocha.

He had also charged the governors to ensure that the forthcoming convention to pick a presidential candidate reflects all the values and virtues of the party.

SaharaReporters had earlier today reported that ahead of Monday’s presidential primary, a section of the APC cabal is trying to convince Buhari to make Senate President, Lawan his successor.

After all plots to bring former President Goodluck Jonathan as the APC candidate appeared to have hit the doldrums, the cabal had reportedly now convinced Buhari to present Lawan to the critical stakeholders of the party as his preferred candidate for the plum job.

After two postponements, the ruling party had fixed its presidential primary for June 6, 7 and 8.

Twenty-three aspirants were screened by the party’s screening committee headed by a former governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

The pendulum has been swinging towards the national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmad Lawan and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.
