Anambra Government Officials Visit Husband Of Pregnant Woman Killed Along With Her 4 Children

Officials of the government of Anambra State have paid a condolence visit to Mr. Jubril Ahmed, the husband of the late Hariri Jubril, a pregnant woman who was killed alongside her four children by gunmen in the state. SaharaReporters had reported how gunmen whose identities were yet to be unveiled gruesomely murdered the 32-year-old Harira Jibril and her four children – Fatima, Khadijah, Hadiza and Zaituna, who were aged nine, seven, five and two respectively.

A media report from the governor’s media office said the state delegation, led by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Paul Nwosu, including the Commissioner for Women and Social Development, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, and Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Christian Aburime, met with Jibril at the Cattle market, Amansea. Nwosu who conveyed the condolence message from the state governor, Charles Soludo and Ndi Anambra to the family of the departed, explained that it was not a targeted attack on a particular tribe or religion. While he described the incident as shocking and unfortunate, he noted that the governor would have come in person but because of other security emergencies, he sent the delegation to commiserate with the Hausa community. He said that Ndigbo and other tribes have lived together for so long in peace and harmony, and urged them to go about their lawful businesses. Also speaking, Commissioner for Women and Social Development, Obinabo, appealed to the gunmen to have a rethink for the sake of the unborn generation, reminding them that Anambra people were largely travellers. Leader of Miyetti Allah in the South East, Mallam Gidado Sadiq who described the incident as horrible, thanked the governor for sending the delegation. Sadiq disclosed that many of his people have been killed and many of their people had already travelled as a result of the incident. While pledging their readiness to continue working with the government to enthrone peace in the state, he said their people living and doing business in Anambra are aware that they are not the target, recalling that a lawmaker in the state was also killed in a gruesome manner. The widower said he lacked words to express himself. The Sarkin Chamber of Anambra State, Usman Farang, prayed that violence should stop. Chairman, Amansea Cattle market, Alhaji Bello Maigari, younger sister of the late Harira, Suweiba Musa, as well as the Hausa Community in Amansea, were present during the visit.
Jubril works as a security guard in Anambra State.A cash donation was presented to the bereaved during the visit.

Jack Dorsey Leaves Twitter Board 16 Years After Co-founding Social Media Giant

Jack Dorsey will reportedly leave Twitter’s board of directors today – 16 years after co-founding the firm.
The departure, first reported by Axios, means all of Twitter’s founders have now severed official ties with the company.

He is expected to stand down ahead of the $44billion takeover by Tesla magnate Elon Musk, Daily Mail reports.
It comes after the entrepreneur was accused of stabbing the rest of the board in the back by helping the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, acquire Twitter. One of his former colleagues slammed him for ‘clear backstabbing’ when he and the billionaire ‘had a deal in hand to come to a standstill’. Meanwhile billionaire Peter Thiel is also expected to leave Facebook despite being an early investor in the company.Dorsey was set to leave Twitter on Wednesday, according to business news website The Street. The CEO and co-founder had not commented on the claims and the news firm was yet to go into further detail. Earlier this month, the entrepreneur said he agreed with Musk’s decision to reverse a ban on Donald Trump on the platform. Musk, who is in the process of completing his $44billion acquisition, revealed he intended to revoke the ban, calling it ‘a morally bad decision and foolish in the extreme’. Trump was banned from Twitter in January 2021, in response to his supporters storming the US Capitol and attempting to block the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory. Speaking at a London conference on the future of cars, Musk said: ‘I do think it was not correct to ban Donald Trump.’ The Tesla founder said Dorsey, who was CEO until November 2021, agreed with him. ‘I do agree,’ Dorsey tweeted, pointing out he did not generally support bans.
‘There are exceptions (CSE, illegal behaviour, spam or network manipulation, etc), but generally permanent bans are a failure of ours and don’t work, which I wrote about here after the event (and called for a resilient social media protocol).’
Dorsey then linked to his January 13, 2021, tweet in which he defended the decision.
‘I do not celebrate or feel pride in our having to ban @realdonaldtrump from Twitter, or how we got here,’ Dorsey said at the time. ‘After a clear warning we’d take this action, we made a decision with the best information we had based on threats to physical safety both on and off Twitter. ‘I believe this was the right decision for Twitter. We faced an extraordinary and untenable circumstance, forcing us to focus all of our actions on public safety. Offline harm as a result of online speech is demonstrably real, and what drives our policy and enforcement above all.’ Dorsey added, in his lengthy thread, a caveat that the decision would need reevaluating. ‘This moment in time might call for this dynamic, but over the long term, it will be destructive to the noble purpose and ideals of the open internet. ‘A company making a business decision to moderate itself is different from a government removing access, yet can feel much the same,’ he said. Quizzed about his views by Axios’s business editor Dan Primack, Dorsey said that he now regretted the call. ‘It was a business decision, it shouldn’t have been,’ he said. ‘And we should always revisit our decisions and evolve as necessary. I stated in that thread and still believe that permanent bans of individuals are directionally wrong.’ Trump, who launched his own competing service dubbed Truth Social, previously claimed he would not return to Twitter even if he was invited back. Appearing virtually at the FT Future of the Car conference, Musk called Twitter’s ban of Trump a ‘mistake’. ‘It alienated a large part of the country, and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice,’ Musk said. ‘He is now going to be on Truth Social. ‘So I think this may end up being frankly worse than having a single forum where everyone can debate. I guess the answer is that I would reverse the permanent ban.’ Musk said he had discussed the subject of permanent bans, or ‘permabans’, with Dorsey. ‘He and I are of the same mind, which is that permanent bans should be extremely rare, and really reserved for accounts that are bots, or spam/scam accounts,’ said Musk.
‘I would reverse the permaban of Trump,’ he said, adding: ‘Obviously I don’t own Twitter yet, so this is not something that will definitely happen.’ ‘But my opinion, and I want to be clear that Jack Dorsey shares this opinion, is that we should not have permabans,’ said Musk. In his remarks on Tuesday, Musk also said that his acquisition of Twitter, which is still subject to shareholder approval, could close well before the October deadline. ‘Just objectively it is not a done deal,’ he said. ‘The best case scenario is that it would perhaps be done in two or three months.’

E2%80%99s-pity-presidential-aspirant-peter-obi-dumped-pdp-%E2%80%93-bode-george It’s A Pity Presidential Aspirant, Peter Obi Dumped PDP – Bode George

A former national vice-chairman (southwest) of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olabode George has reacted to the departure of a presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, from the party ahead of its primaries.Obi, a former governor of Anambra and running mate to Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election, in a letter dated May 24, 2022, and addressed to the national chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu, resigned from the party and withdrew from the presidential race.

Olabode during Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday said he was taken aback by the news of Obi leaving PDP.George said he was not happy about Obi’s decision and that he shouldn’t expect to win every time.He said, “Once that news broke, I was taken aback because Obi Peter has established himself as a respectable and responsible, gentleman; very resourceful both in human resources and other endeavours of life.“But for him to have dumped the PDP, I don’t know why he did that, it’s a pity that he actually dumped the party.“Life is full of imponderables; you can’t win it all the time and Nigeria is still developing.“I’m not very happy but maybe he has another plan, I don’t know why. I have a lot of regard and respect for him and every presidential aspirant in our party that came to Lagos to lobby delegates.”He said it is very important for the PDP to present a candidate that does not have a filthy record for the presidential election. “I was particularly very happy with every one of them (aspirants) but who will win? I’m not a soothsayer, and I don’t hold a crystal ball. May the best win but the most important is whoever we present to the Nigerian public must be somebody that has character, that has a high track record of responsibility, not somebody that has filthy things in his closet because the public office is a public trust,” he said.He further appealed to Nigerians to stop comparing the country’s democracy to that of the United States of America which is over 200 years old while Nigeria is still a developing country. He said, “My appeal to everyone in this country, don’t think that, yes don’t think that Nigeria is America yet. America is over 200 years old; even there, democracy is not perfect.“We are still like a toddler when we talk about democratic dispensation, so it will take time, and democratic practice is not a 100 metre-dash, it is continuous. You win some, you lose some but the most important thing is after an election, there will be a post-mortem analysis during which the failures and drawbacks will be looked at and we make amends for us to start growing.”

London-based Law Firm Writes UK Foreign Secretary, Truss, Accuses Her Of Inaction Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention

Nnamdi Kanu

A London-based law firm, Bindmans LLP, has written the United Kingdom foreign secretary, Liz Truss, challenging the inaction of the government to acknowledge Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra as a British citizen. The legal services, in a pre-action letter sent on behalf of Kanu’s family, said Kanu, a British citizen, has been subject to extraordinary rendition, urging Truss to lawfully determine what further steps the UK government should be taking to assist him given the violation of his human rights.

Nnamdi Kanu

According to the letter, “the case raises important points of principle, not only in relation to extraordinary rendition, but on the legal duties the UK has when its citizens’ human rights are abused abroad”. Bindmans said its action was informed by the family of the pro-Biafra separatist leader who approached it, adding that the British authorities had not done anything to secure the release of Kanu since he was brought back to Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement by Bindmans LLP, obtained by SaharaReporters from Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, on Wednesday. The IPOB leader has been detained in the facility of Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services, for over 10 months following his arrest on June 27, 2021. The legal services firm said, “The Nigerian government has described this as an ‘interception’ and has not provided any evidence of formal extradition proceedings.
British High Commission officials have been permitted to visit Mr Kanu on just two occasions,” adding that there is compelling evidence Kanu was subject to extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021.
It added that “to date, neither country has put forward any credible evidence to suggest otherwise”. The letter reads partly, “The right to liberty and security of the person, and freedom from arbitrary arrest or detention have been described by the United Nations as ‘deeply entrenched human rights norms’. “Extraordinary rendition is a fundamental contravention of these principles and a serious breach of international law. The English courts have considered the question of the UK’s obligations to British citizens who have been extraordinarily rendered in the case of Abbasi v Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs 2002 EWCA Civ 1598. “There, the Court of Appeal stressed that in order to properly consider whether to make diplomatic representations or take more serious action to protect a British citizen’s interests, the Foreign Secretary must start by reaching a clear view on whether its citizen has suffered a ‘denial of justice’ as a result of a violation of their rights and freedoms as guaranteed by international law.” Birdmans LLP said in Kanu’s case, the Foreign Secretary has been unwilling to reach a view on whether the separatist leader has been subject to extraordinary rendition, “despite evidence submitted to her officials over the ten months that have passed since he was taken to Nigeria. “Her refusal to form a view on Mr Kanu’s rendition means she cannot have taken into account all relevant factors nor have lawfully exercised her discretion in considering what further steps to take in respect of Mr Kanu’s rendition.” Shirin Marker, solicitor at Bindmans LLP who is representing Kanu’s family said: “It has now been nearly a year since Mr Kanu was subject to extraordinary rendition. Since then, he has been detained in solitary confinement in a cell six by six feet for nearly 24 hours a day. To date, the UK’s diplomatic efforts have had very little effect. UK officials have only been able to visit Mr Kanu twice whilst in detention, his conditions of detention have not changed since that visit and no other progress has been made in assisting him. “Most remarkably, the Foreign Secretary has been unable or unwilling to reach a conclusion on whether Mr Kanu has been subject to extraordinary rendition or not, despite all the evidence showing he was. “That matters because she cannot make a proper decision on how to respond to what has happened without deciding precisely what she is responding to. “Mr Kanu’s family, who bring this challenge, urge her to take a decisive stance on his extraordinary rendition so that she can properly consider what further steps should be taken to assist him in light of this egregious breach of international law.” Kingsley Kanu, who is a brother of the agitator, said: “With every day that passes, I am increasingly concerned for my brother’s welfare in detention and increasingly frustrated by the UK Government’s ineffectiveness in assisting him. “I hope the Court will rule the Foreign Secretary must recognise the seriousness of my brother’s situation and properly consider what other steps she can take to assist him in light of his extraordinary rendition.” Kingsley Kanu is represented by John Halford and Shirin Marker of Bindmans LLP, and counsel Charlotte Kilroy QC of Blackstone Chambers and Tatyana Eatwell of Doughty Street Chambers.

Nigerian Company, Errand360, Reacts As Deliveryman Accused Of Stealing Bicycle Dies In Police Custody

A logistics company, Errand360 Technology Service Limited has reacted to reports about the death of one of its deliverymen, Uzoma Chidera, who died in police custody. Chidera, according to reports, died in prison after the start-up ordered his arrest for allegedly stealing a bicycle.

A brother of the deceased, Samuel, had claimed the organisation’s bicycle was stolen from his brother. He said while the family was initially not aware of Chidera’s arrest when they were later informed, funds were raised to buy the organisation a new bicycle but in the process of getting the deceased out of custody, the police informed them that he had died. Reacting in a statement, the management of Errand 360 confirmed that Chidera was truly one of its staff members, saying he started work on January 17, 2022. However, the deceased was said to have taken the bicycle to his house which is against company policy. When asked to return the bicycle, he claimed it had been stolen, the statement said. The young man was asked to return some bicycle when the company found that the claim about the stolen bicycle was not credible, the company further said. However, after a series of eventualities in the company, Chidera was said to have been arrested over alleged theft after the company invited the police for an investigation. The statement noted, “On May 13, 2022, we received the sad news of the unfortunate passing of Mr. Chidera Uzomma Ezekiel and we are grieved by this news. Mr. Ezekiel was contracted as a rider for the company on January 17, 2022. He worked with us until the incident of February 19, 2022. “Due to the misrepresentations that have been shared on social media regarding this case, it has become imperative to present details of the series of events that necessitated the involvement of the police by the company, in a case against Mr. Ezekiel. “Mr. Ezekiel was an employee of the company, and throughout his employment, he was treated with the same level of respect and fairness that we show to all our contract riders and employees. He was also subject to the same contract terms which include that he must present a surety before engagement. This surety was a certain Mr. Kenneth, who he introduced as his relative. “On February 14, 2022, against company policy, Mr. Ezekiel took the company’s bicycle home and failed to return it the next day. He claimed the bicycle had been stolen. “Upon internal investigations and speaking to Mr. Ezekiel, the company did not find the story of the bicycle being stolen credible, and so he was requested to return the missing bicycle. “Days later, specifically on February 19, 2022, some persons broke into the company’s Maintenance Building. The security personnel at the facility on that day identified Mr. Ezekiel as one of the persons who broke in. “The company naturally involved the police in the matter for the purpose of investigating this series of events. While investigating, we were informed that the police visited Mr. Ezekiel’s residence, where some of the company’s bicycle parts were found. “Despite this, no arrest was made. Mr. Ezekiel subsequently returned a replacement for the originally missing bicycle, which upon inspection, was found to be another of the company’s bicycles. “Thus, it was proven that Mr. Ezekiel was likely one of the individuals who had broken into the Maintenance Building prior, and he had returned another of the company’s bicycles as a replacement for the initial missing bicycle. It was based on this that the police arrested him and took him into custody for further investigation and arraignment. “Mr. Ezekiel was arraigned before the magistrate court, and from this point, the matter was in the hands of the court, as is the due process. On March 1st, 2022, after the first hearing of the case, his bail terms were set by the court, as this was a bailable offence. “The company subsequently received information that his bail conditions had not been met. In good faith, the company offered to deposit the bail bond. However, certain additional documents were required to be deposited which the company could not provide. “At the recent hearing of the case on March 30, 2022, the company expressly indicated to the court that it was set to drop the case if Mr. Ezekiel or his guarantor returned an actual replacement for the originally missing bicycle. “The court accepted this condition and adjourned the case to June 8, 2022. On April 4 2022, a replacement for the missing bicycle was provided. The company went to the court to attempt an early withdrawal of the case, despite the next date of hearing being June 8. “However, Mr. Ezekiel’s presence was required in court, but the authorities could not provide him before the court. It should be noted that as a criminal matter, the case was largely in the hands of the prosecution. “We were left with no option but to wait till the next adjourned date for a report of settlement. Unfortunately, Mr. Ezekiel passed away before the report of the settlement could be presented in court. “We value the well-being of all our riders and employees and are deeply saddened by Mr. Ezekiel’s passing. The company followed due process by escalating the matter to the police, for appropriate investigation and arraignment before the court. “We understand the damage that a one-sided story can cause in these circumstances, and this press release is to share the facts and timeline of events. We have ample evidence to corroborate the facts stated. “We urge the general public to disregard the misrepresentations being circulated on social media, and we continue to sympathize with Mr. Ezekiel’s family. We are available to provide any assistance required in this difficult time.”

One of the workers at Hilton Hotel where a postgraduate student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Timothy Adegoke, was allegedly murdered has said the management of the hotel asked all staff members to delete pictures taken on their phones after the body of the deceased was found.Magdalena Chiefuna, the hotel employee, said the staff members of the hotel were made to swear an oath not to disclose what happened regarding Adegoke’s death.

She also told the Osun State High Court on Wednesday that no doctor was called and that the police were not notified about the discovery of the body of the deceased. In her evidence, the second defendant, Chiefuna, said she was on duty on November 6, 2021, and gave evidence of how the body of the deceased was found in Room 305 of the hotel.Under cross-examination by human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), the witness said that the deceased was found dead on November 7 but that a doctor was not called to attend to him or pronounce him dead.He also said the death was not reported to the police as they took an oath of confidentiality in order to protect the hotel business. She also admitted that she and some staff members were summoned to the house of the first defendant, Dr. Ramon Adedoyin (hotel owner), who asked the receptionists to delete the pictures of the accounts captured on their telephones.Even though the Managing Director of the hotel, Raheem Adedoyin asked them to deny that the deceased lodged in the hotel, she disclosed all that happened to the police when she was arrested on November 12.Answering another question by Mr. Falana, the witness said she did not know whether the receipt of the money paid for two nights by the deceased had been submitted to the police by the hotel management. The witness said that Dr. Adedoyin did not visit the hotel even though he was informed of the death of the deceased on November 7.Also, Professor S.O. Ojo, who gave evidence for the defence, was part of the team of 8 pathologists who conducted the autopsy on the body of Adegoke. He was led in evidence by the counsel for the second defendant, Mr. Kunle Adegoke (SAN). In his evidence-in-chief, Ojo said that he ruled out violence as the cause of death. But under cross-examination by Mr. Femi Falana SAN, Ojo said that he could not say anatomically if the “deceased died of a natural cause”.When Mr. Falana SAN drew his attention to the report of Dr. Waheed Oluogun who supervised the exhumation of the body of Adegoke, Ojo said that he could not comment on the report as he did not witness the exhumation. Mr. Falana then asked him to read the aspect of Dr. Oluogun’s pathology report where he said that the body of Adegoke was wrapped with a blood-stained duvet without exposure to any part of the body and that Adegoke was found in a supine position with two different types of ropes around his ankles and the neck. But Ojo insisted that he was not involved in the exhumation of the body. The cross-examination of the witness by other defence counsel will continue on Thursday.
