Tackle Nigeria’s Enemies Like Bad Fuel Importers, Leave Organisers Of Planned Protest Alone, Labour Congress, NLC Tells DSS

The Nigeria Labour Congress has refuted claims by the Department of State Services alleging that certain groups, including Labour unions, have planned to cause violence in the North Central part of the country. The DSS, in a statement issued on Saturday, said some groups plan to cause ethno-religious crisis, ignite reprisals and heat up the polity.

The agency also said there was a plot to use students, striking university teachers, labour unions, disgruntled individuals and strategic groups as well as exploit the global energy situation to carry out a mass protest like the #ENDSARS protest of 2020.Reacting in a statement by its President, Ayuba Wabba, the NLC advised the secret police to rechannel its energy and resources into bringing to justice those who have become enemies of Nigerians rather than issuing statements suggesting the ‘criminality’ of trade unions. The labour group also distanced itself from such a movement, stating that it informs the DSS and other security agencies of its activities, especially when such are undertaken in the public space. It added, “In all our undertakings as trade unions and labour centres, we have never been found to be violent or complicit in encouraging acts of brigandage. It is, therefore, surprising that the DSS would suddenly decide to lump trade unions in a log of organizations.”The group further noted, “Citizens have the right to draw the attention of government to their plight through petitions, peaceful protests, and other advocacy initiatives. It would be greatly disrespectful to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and our democratic order to issue statements that appear to scare citizens from their rights to peacefully engage their government. “The Nigeria Labour Congress has already condemned and rejected the current paralysis of academic activities in our universities which we believe is as a result of government dishonouring commitments made in Collective Bargaining Agreements with university lecturers. “We have also lampooned the persisting scarcity of refined petroleum products which have exposed our people, especially workers to great suffering and anguish. We have already spoken and we are still speaking to draw the attention of government to do the needful. “The Congress is also deeply worried that the repeated collapse of the national electricity grid in the past few weeks has thrown most of the country in total blackout. We are further concerned that the continued issuing of estimated billings to electricity consumers by DISCOs have intensified the suffering Nigerians are going through. “We have had reasons in the past to protest against the neglect of Nigeria’s critical electricity assets and anti-people electricity policies. We do not need clandestine meetings with State Governors, some of whom treat workers terribly, to ventilate our concerns on issues that affect Nigerian workers and people. “Our pain as citizens, workers, students, traders and professionals becomes more excruciating with the knowledge that our ordeal and vicissitudes are all self-inflicted. “We urge the security agencies that instead of investing in scare alarms, they should rather re-channel their energy and resources and help bring to justice the real enemies of public order and stability – importers of adulterated petrol, petroleum marketers and filling station operators who are busier in ungodly hours selling to black marketers, and dispense with only one pump or two in broad daylight thus subjecting citizens to harrowing petrol queues.“We believe that the intervention of relevant agencies of government can bring both the glitch in the petroleum products supply chain and the atrocious sharp practices at the points of retail under control.”

Nigerian Policemen Vow To Protest, Strike Over Poor Pay, Welfare Despite Threats By Police Inspector-General

Some junior officers in the Nigeria Police Force have vowed to go ahead with a planned protest on March 26.The protest scheduled to take place at the Eagles Square in Abuja, will see policemen making a host of demands including a raise in salaries, improvement in working conditions and welfare for the rank and file.

In a document referenced 4001/AJR/NPF/ABJ/Vol 7/188 addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali, and seen by SaharaReporters, the aggrieved policemen said, “We are not happy at all. Strike is the only language Nigerian government understands.”We, the junior officers, would stop going to our duty posts including those who are attached to politicians on and from the said date.”Our demands include poor salaries, removal of police personnel from devilish contributory pension scheme, non-issuance of kits.”We also want the government to address non-payment of duty tour allowances, non-payment of course allowances, poor barracks accommodation, non-promotion as at when due. “Also, the National Housing fund scheme, they have been deducting N3,000 from our salaries for a long time.”A policeman, who confirmed the development, told SaharaReporters that their salaries could no longer cater for their needs. He said, “I’m a senior sergeant due for my next rank, inspector. And like that for others that might have died and retired from the service but no access to the fund or a bedroom flat. It’s a pitiful situation.”A level 03 officer with EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) earns N280,000 monthly, while a police constable on the same level earns N45,700. “An EFCC operative on grade level 08 will smile home with over N490,000 every month, while a police inspector on the same level earns N109,200.”As a sergeant, my salary is N63,000 despite having a wife and three children in this harsh economy.”The protest at Eagles Square on March 26 will go ahead by God’s grace,” the policeman said.In a bid to have policemen back down on the planned protest, the IGP had earlier disclosed that the contentious salary increment would be paid with March salary. The IGP also warned officers that strike action is tantamount to mutiny.”The men and women of the Nigeria Police Force are fully aware that a strike action or other deliberate disruption of law enforcement services by any security organisation is mutinous and the personnel of the force would not degenerate at any point to that level of disloyalty and indiscipline, as policing services are paramount and essential in the maintenance of orderliness and peace in the nation,” the IGP said in a statement by Acting Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Olumuyiwa Adejobi, recently. But despite those interventions, policemen have said they will go ahead with the planned industrial action to press home their demands.

Edo-based Online Vendor, Denzil Telecoms, Collects N360,000 For Laptop, Fails To Deliver Item To Buyer

A Nigerian man currently studying for a master’s programme in the United Kingdom has accused the management of Denzil Telecoms based in Auchi, Edo State, of refusing to deliver a Macbook Pro 2020 laptop computer he purchased and fully paid for on March 16, 2022. The young man, who gave his name only as Akin, disclosed that he paid N360,000 for the item, which the seller promised to deliver to him in the UK in two days after purchase but has failed to do so five days after the transaction was carried out.
According to him, efforts to retrieve his money from Denzil Telecoms have proven difficult as they no longer answer his telephone calls or respond to messages sent to their Instagram page from where he got to know about their activities. “I came across a sponsored post from Denzil Telecoms on Instagram about a Macbook Pro 2020 laptop for N360,000. After concluding negotiations with them, I paid immediately and the item was to be delivered in two days to me in the UK. “But I got a rude shock from the company shortly afterwards when I noticed that they were not responding as fast as they earlier did. When I enquired why there was a delay in sending the laptop across to me in the UK, they claimed that the stock they had was sold out and that they were trying to sort out things. “I began to suspect foul play at that point and started to give them constant follow-up and even asked for a refund shortly afterwards. Till this moment, the item is yet to be delivered to me while my money has not also been returned. “More people are still falling for their tricks and still paying. The company should be stopped and tracked down,” the young man said while narrating his experience with SaharaReporters on Monday. When our correspondent reached out to Denzil Telecoms on Monday over the issue, the vendor’s two mobile lines displayed on their Instagram page and merchandise were switched off. Text messages sent to both lines had also not been replied to as of the time of filing this report. Meanwhile, another customer named Peter Aderoju has accused the Auchi, Edo State-based vendor of refusing to deliver an item he purchased and paid for recently. According to him, Denzil Telecoms has refused to respond to his calls and messages seeking to know why his purchase had not been sent to him since the transaction was concluded.

Exams Body, WAEC Releases Results Of January 2022 Exercise With Only 26% Pass Rate

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the recently conducted West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates which was held between January and February 2022.The announcement was contained in a statement by the Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, Patrick Areghan, and issued by its acting head of the public affairs unit, Moyosola Adeyegbe.

According to the statement, a total of 7,166 candidates sat the examination nationwide with only 1,886 of them (representing 26.32%) obtaining credit pass and above in a minimum of five subjects including English language and mathematics. It further noted that the registration figure for this year’s first series examination diet for private candidates declined by 4.85 per cent.Out of the 7,166 candidates that sat the examination, 2,835 candidates representing 39.56 per cent obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects with or without English Language and or Mathematics. The body further noted that out of the total number, who sat the examination, only 6,949 (representing 96.97% ) have their results fully processed and released while 217 candidates (representing 3.03%) have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors on the part of the candidates and that efforts are ongoing to rectify the errors and release those results. However, WAEC explained that despite the decline in the performance of candidates in the exam this year over the previous two years, the results should not be compared with that of the school-based exam where up to 80 per cent of the total candidates obtained similar results.According to the statement, candidates in the school-based WASSCE are compelled to sit for between eight and nine subjects while private candidates in the case of the first and second series of the exam are free to sit for a number of subjects even one depending on their deficiency.“That is why it is will not be true or fair to say that the performance in this examination has dwindled,” a part of the statement noted.
