Amnesty International Condemns Attacks On Sowore By Nigerian Government-Sponsored Thugs

Global human rights’ body, Amnesty International, has expressed concerns over the safety and liberty of human rights’ activist, Omoyele Sowore.
The group condemned the nonchalance of security agents in the attacks by state-sponsored hoodlums on the activist – the latest episode of which took place at the Federal High Court on Thursday.

AI lamented that the attacks happened in the presence of security agents who made no effort to stop it.
In a statement on Thursday, Amnesty International noted that the series of attacks on Sowore had become disturbing, while it called on the Nigerian government to immediately launch an investigation into the issue.
The statement reads, “Amnesty International is concerned for the safety and liberty of Nigerian activist and human rights defender, Omoyele Sowore, following today’s attack by suspected thugs at the premises of the Federal High Court Abuja. The attack happened in the presence of security officials who made no attempt to arrest the attackers.

How Department Of State Services’ Director Asked Court Security Personnel To Withdraw While Thugs Attacked Me— Sowore

“This is not the first time that Sowore has faced threats, attacks and intimidation since his release from DSS detention in December 2020.
”On 31 May 2021 Sowore was shot in the right side of the stomach by a female police officer at the Unity Fountain, Abuja during a peaceful protest.
“Today’s attack on Sowore comes amidst escalating threats and attacks on human rights defenders across Nigeria. The threats, harassment, intimidation and attacks on Omoleye Sowore and other human rights defenders and activists in Nigeria must end.
”Amnesty International calls on the Nigerian authorities to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice.”
On Thursday, hoodlums pounced on Sowore while he was attending the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
While Sowore attended the court session, the armed thugs in large numbers laid siege around, waiting for him to come out of the place.
Immediately they sighted him, the thugs rushed towards him and started throwing stones at the activist and his entourage.
As he navigated his way out of the court premises, the thugs rained several more stones on his car, damaging the front and rear side glasses.
Some of the hired hoodlums could be heard telling others to chase the vehicle and make sure the activist was dealt with.
Meanwhile, Sowore, in an account titled, “Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial: Deadly Attack on my person at the Federal High Court in Abuja,” narrated how the DSS Director of Operations informed the court security personnel to withdraw from the scene whenever the thugs were about to attack him (Sowore).
Narrating the incident, Sowore said, “I was at the Federal High Court in Abuja today to cover, observe and witness the trial of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu before Justice Binta Nyako.
“Soon as court proceedings ended I left the court room and tried going to my next assignment in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. As soon as I reached the gate of the Federal High Court, I was alerted to the large presence of thugs and hoodlums carrying dangerous weapons. I had been briefed that these persons were mobilised by Nigeria’s secret police known as the DSS. During my last appearance in court for the same purpose, they physically attacked me while the DSS and police pushed me back to them; this was captured on tape.
“My lawyers wrote a petition to the police and the DG of DSS specifically requesting for their prosecution of the ‘thugs’ and their officers involved in these infamous acts but the security agencies either ignored the petitions or played hookie.
“Today, as I drove away from the courtroom, I was attacked with dangerous objects leading to the destruction of my car and injuries to some of the occupants in the car travelling with me. I sustained minor injuries from broken glasses. These assailants were brought by the DSS according to Federal court security. It is not their first time.
“The federal DSS Director of Operations even informed court security to ‘withdraw’ whenever I was to be attacked. Since my partial release in December 2019, the police and DSS have tried to maim or kill me in several documented/reported incidents of abuse and assault including the shooting of a riot gun, physical attacks and recently the use of non-state actors to violently assault me in public.
“Unfortunately, the Nigerian media haven’t reported or investigated these violent deadly attacks.”
SaharaReporters had noted that Thursday’s attack was not the first time the DSS would be mobilising thugs to go after Sowore – the latest incident adds to an already swelling list.
On November 9, about 20 thugs were recruited by the DSS to attack Sowore while he attended the trial of Kanu at the same court.

Igbo First Republic Lawmaker, Amaechi Visits Nnamdi Kanu In Detention Of Secret Police, DSS

Nnamdi Kanu

First Republic lawmaker and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, on Thursday visited the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
This was revealed by Kanunta Kanu, younger brother of Nnamdi Kanu via his known social media pages.

Nnamdi Kanu

Amaechi visited Kanu alongside the co-Chair of the Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace, Bishop Sunday Onuoha. The separatist agitator’s brother said the visitors “had a meaningful interaction” with the IPOB leader.
“Chief Mbazuruike Amechi and His Grace, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, visited their son #MaziNnamdiKanu the leader of IPOB at #DSS Headquarters in Abuja today, where they had a meaningful interaction,” Kanunta Kanu wrote.
SaharaReporters had some days ago reported that Chief Amaechi, a nonagenarian, led Igbo elders to Aso Rock Villa where they met President Muhammadu Buhari and asked for Kanu who has been held since June, to be freed.
Buhari, in his response, had said the unconditional release of the IPOB leader, who is currently standing trial for treason, would conflict the doctrine of separation of powers between the executive and the judiciary.
On Thursday, Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court in Abuja rescheduled Kanu’s trial from January 19 to 18, 2022.
The shift in the trial date followed the abridgement of time granted by the judge following a passionate plea to that effect.
Kanu’s lead lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor had approached the Court with an application seeking an order of the court to accommodate the trial in November and December this year as against the earlier January 19, 2022.
The prosecuting Attorney of the Federal Government, Shuaib Labaran, however, told the court that a counteraffidavit opposing the request by the government had been filed and served on Kanu.
Justice Nyako informed Kanu’s lawyer that the application for time abridgement could not be granted because there was no judicial time for such an issue.
During the drama that ensued, the case diary of the court was read to the lawyer to establish that the court had crowded pending cases.
Following the insistence, Justice Nyako agreed to shift other cases slated for January 18 to accommodate the trial which would last till January 19 and 20.
Justice Nyako ordered the DSS to allow Kanu to practise his faith, change his clothes and be given the maximum possible comfort in the detention facility.

The white man assumed to be in his 60s has grey hair and is wearing blue jeans, a light blue shirt under a red sweater and tan jacket. He is seen holding the barrel of the shotgun to his head, according to Dailymail.
Police were heard saying, “Put down the gun. There are better ways to get your message out.”
Officers had their guns trained on him as they issued their warnings and attempted to negotiate with him. The man is reportedly threatening to harm himself. A black bag, red megaphone, glasses, a water bottle, several jackets and several small unidentified objects were splayed out on the sidewalk behind him.
NYPD released a statement assuring citizens that “There is currently NO THREAT to the public.”
Video from the scene shows the man pacing back and forth as he holds the barrel of the gun to his chin.
He is seen holding up a red folder and appears to be talking to someone out of the shot. He shakes his head before standing up and walking towards the direction he was speaking holding the shotgun and the red folder.
NYPD confirmed that they are attempting to establish communication with the armed man but did not report any comments he has made.
Two law enforcement officials say the man was seen muttering to himself and also has what appears to be a bag with him, CNN reported.
The bomb squad has responded to the scene where a heavy police presence has been seen.
NYPD issued a traffic advisory around 11am warning citizens to avoid the area as emergency vehicles were expected to surround the area. Traffic along FDR Drive has been affected.
An estimated two dozen emergency vehicles have responded to the scene.
Helicopters were heard flying over the area and a city bus has been used to block traffic uptown.

E2%80%94groups-accuse-vice-president-osinbajo-inaugurating Delta Independent Power Project Is A Fraud—Groups Accuse Vice President Osinbajo Of Inaugurating ‘Illegal’ Project

Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo.

Delta State Coalition of Civil Societies has described the state’s newly inaugurated Independent Power Project (IPP), located in Asaba, the state capital, as a ‘fraud and conduit for government officials to loot the state treasury’.
The coalition described the project which was inaugurated on Monday as ‘illegal’, saying it does not have the mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report and approval from government regulatory bodies.

Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo.

It, therefore, blamed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for allowing himself to be used to inaugurate an illegal project that has no approval.
The multi-billion naira 8.5 Megawatts IPP project has continued to generate controversies and ripples across the state following the alleged fraudulent manner it was done in utmost secrecy.
The project was done by the state government in partnership with Bestanchury Power Solutions Nigeria Limited (BPSL) and Africa Plus Partners.
The coalition condemned the project in an open letter titled, “Open Letter To Delta State Governor And Deltans Who Will Have Cancer In The Nearest Future Due To Poor Government Regulations”.
The letter was addressed to the state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa and also sent to the state Commissioner for Environment and other relevant authorities.
Signed by its public relations officer, the coalition of civil societies and the state Director-General of Young Nigerian Rights Organisation, Victor Ojei, in the letter called on the Nigerian government to stop the project because of its health hazards to residents in the area.
The coalition said, “The IPP project of Asaba located at NTA Junction, Asaba does not have EIA license and exposes residence of that region to respiratory diseases and cancer in future. Prior to this petition, we had sent two petitions with respect to the above subject on our concerns as watchdogs of the society.
“We are social justice crusaders, we consulted with appropriate stakeholders and state actors but till date, we did not get any response thus making it obvious that the government is trying to legalise illegality with respect to enforcement of power laws that thus violates the rights of Deltans be it in construction of shops under high tension transmission cables or setting up an IPP at a location which poses a risk to the lives and properties on the immediate environment it was setup.
“We have made efforts to drag in other stakeholders who can help resolve these challenges which obviously calls for concerns over lives and properties. But since the consultations did not work based on the silence of both state actors and non-state actors (NERC, BEDC and NEMSA- Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency), then confrontation via institution of legal action means becomes inevitable. The IPP does not have any authorisation document to be in operation. The Company needs a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) because the former expired in 2019. They were supposed to have an EIA from the Federal Ministry of Environment, of which the Federal Ministry of Environment is not aware because nobody has told the ministry that the project exists.
“PPA is an agreement between the parties, the government and the company involved. The original arrangement was that the Delta state government will pay the private investor N300,000,000.00 (N300 million) monthly, this will last for ten years thus giving billions of naira which eventually the project will become theirs based on the project is a B.O.O (Build Operate and Own) as against B.O.T (Build Operate and Transfer). The state government before now paid an estimate of N25,000,000.00 monthly to BEDC for all parastatals which the state has abandoned and negotiated with the IPP investor to pay the sum of N215,000,000.00 monthly after we raised our concerns.
“The Delta state government went on with the investors to pay these monthly payments in two components. (i) Energy which cost N185,000,000.00 (ii) Fuel component which mandates the Ministry of Energy to pay for the fuel at the cost of N30,000,000.00 monthly and totally N215,000,000.00 monthly. Be conscious of the fact that nobody also confirms the usage of fuel to measure fuel consumption from the Ministry of Energy. Nobody also confirms the usage of energy, they lack the capacity of an engineer. The project also doesn’t have any electricity metering to measure the energy consumed. The project does not have NEMSA certificate, the role of NEMSA is to validate the materials used for the installation of the IPP. NERC and BEDC were compromised by the Delta state government because they both failed in enforcing statutory duties.
“The IPP was supposed to have NERC certificates, one certificate for power generation and the second certificate will be for power distribution. Below are the disadvantages of CNG (compressed natural gas) being used to power the project. Its low energy density results in low engine performance. It has low engine volumetric efficiency because of gaseous fuel. It needs large storage tanks, which is a safety concern. It has inconsistent fuel properties. Its refuelling is a slow process. It’s highly combustible. Disadvantages of Liquified Natural Gas include combustion, temperatures. There are some disadvantages of NLG such as leakage of gas; they may be explosive, main problem is that it is odourless and undetectable so without odourless.
“Combustion of NLG produced carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other toxic carbon. With the above disadvantages, you can see that the Delta State government, state actors and non-state actors do not care about the health and safety of an average Deltan. It is now very obvious that the Federal Ministry of Environment is not aware of the project so where did they get EIA from? NEMSA only gave them a temporary certificate which does not permit them to operate and has been expecting them to undertake corrections and invite NEMSA to come and inspect the said corrections before issuing them a proper certificate that will permit them to operate fully.
“Both documents are requirements for them to get a NERC license which they need to be recognised and operate as a GenCos on the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). NERC is compromised as they are authorising plant commissioning verbally and without reference to any of their regulatory documents. (It is) a project which seeks to take from the Delta State government a monthly bill of N215 million (on average) for ten years. At the end of the ten years, the Delta State government would have paid the IPP a total of N29 billion and still not own the project because it is a B.O.O (Build, Operate and Own) business model and not a B.O.T (Build, Operate and Transfer) business model.”
Our correspondent gathered that the project was the result of an alleged deal between some top government officials and private individuals. However, it was observed that following the controversy trailing the IPP project, the vice president, Osinbajo declined to make comments on the IPP during inauguration but rather commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa while inaugurating the multi-billion naira state secretariat shortly after the IPP inauguration.
Meanwhile, when contacted about all the allegations on the inauguration of the IPP by the vice president, Osinbajo; the state Commissioner for Energy, Jonathan Ukodhiko, dismissed all the allegations, saying the project is not under Public-Private Partnership (PPP), as the state government didn’t contribute a dime to the entire project adding that the IPP project is a better deal, favourable and convenient for the state government.
Ukodhiko, who seemed angry and incoherent, wrongly insisted that projects are not inaugurated but commissioned.
“Please, please, please correct yourself, that English is not correct, the Vice President didn’t inaugurate the project but commissioned. There’s no English like inauguration, you don’t inaugurate projects but commission. You can only inaugurate a board, committee or panel, so, there is nothing like inauguration of projects. You commission a project, not inauguration.
“However, all those, especially the civil societies criticising the project are fools who don’t know anything about such a project. They are mad, stupid and foolish. What the state government is paying now is far better than what the state was paying to BEDC at the end of the month. We were merely paying for darkness. Let anyone who is angry go to court. Where were the so-called civil societies when Nigerians were being killed and with the hike in prices of commodities?” the commissioner said.

E2%80%93-african-action-congress-condemns-series-attacks-sowore Buhari Must Stop This Show Of Shame – African Action Congress Condemns Series Of Attacks On Sowore

The African Action Congress has condemned the attacks by armed thugs sponsored by the Department of State Services on human rights’ activist and the party chairman, Omoyele Sowore.
The group, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Femi Adeyeye, said it would not tolerate the trend adding that other members of the party who were with Sowore sustained injuries from the attack.

The group further said the brazen attacks on individuals and corporate entities which hold dissenting opinions against the Muhammadu Buhari regime had now become a new normal, while accusing the government of fascism, hardship and human rights violation.
A statement by the party reads, ”In the list of the new lows that the despicable Buhari regime has sunk Nigeria into, is the mobilisation of thugs through its militia arm, the State Security Service (SSS) and other security agencies to attack pro-democracy campaigner, the Chairman of the African Action Congress, Mr Omoyele Sowore.
”It has become trite to see thugs operating violently yet freely in broad daylight, at the Federal High Court premises in Abuja, specifically when Sowore alongside other Nigerians comes to show solidarity with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of Indigneous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the trial by the Federal Government.

“It is also not news that these thugs enjoy state protection, as it has been the case every time he’s been attacked. The last time being October 21, 2021, these thugs attacked Sowore but were apprehended and handed over to the police by courageous journalists who were locked out of the court by “official thugs”- the DSS. This happened while all heavily armed security agents looked the other way.
”These thugs were then released almost immediately and we cannot ascertain if at all they were taken to the Federal Secretariat Police station before being released.
“The case wasn’t different today December 2, 2021 as the thugs came prepared to kill. The window of Sowore’s car was smashed in a bid to get hold of him and while he was driving away, other things that could cause harm were thrown at his car. Members of our party in his company were also not spared by these thugs. They all suffered varying levels of injuries.
“We condemn in the strongest terms these attacks on the Chairman of our party, Mr Sowore and we call on the Buhari regime to stop this show of shame it is serving the international community.
“While the Buhari regime seeks to normalize fascism, hardship and human rights violation, the AAC through all revolutionary means will not fold its arms on this issue. We refuse to accept as a new normal these brazen attacks on individuals and corporate entities which hold dissenting opinions against the Buhari regime.
”The AAC will not watch this slide or wait for another “Government magic” (killing and later denial of killing) to happen to our peace-loving Chairman, as it is now the case of several massacres in the country.
“Conclusively, we call on the Buhari regime to pick itself from the dust and accept defeat honourably. It must stop forthwith the persecution of Omoyele Sowore as it is glaring the regime has no case against him.”

E2%80%99t-have-befitting-barracks-stay-%E2%80%94-inspector-general-police 90% Of Policemen Don’t Have Befitting Barracks To Stay — Inspector-General Of Police

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has lamented the accommodation problems faced by members of the force.
According to the IGP, the NPF is facing a housing deficit with over 90 per cent of its personnel in barracks lacking proper accommodation.

He made this known while speaking at the quarter four 2021 public-private partnership units consultative (3PUCF) meeting organised by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) in Abuja.
The IGP was represented by Zanna Ibrahim, the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG), logistics and supply.
He argued that a good living condition is important for optimal service delivery as housing is considered a fundamental physiological human need and the foundation on which to develop higher human motivation.
“It will surprise you to know that with a workforce of over 350,000 in staff strength, the NPF has less than 10 per cent of its personnel quartered in befitting barracks accommodation,” he said.
“The state of disrepair and integrity failure in our barracks needs no emphasis and we are really in dire need of befitting accommodation to enable us to tackle the art and act of policing the nation optimally.
“Suffice to add that there is an ongoing initiative to recruit 10,000 constables for the next six years annually, thereby increasing the housing needs for police officers,” he said.
Baba also said the force remained resolute in following due process based on extant laws in the pursuit of infrastructural development through PPP.
The IGP said the decay in police infrastructure, negative maintenance culture, years of neglect due to poor budgetary allocation, destruction of police facilities resulting from the #EndSARS protests, banditry, Boko Haram/IPOB activities are still being grappled with.
However, in spite of the challenges, the force is seeking better collaboration with critical stakeholders toward revamping, improving and sustaining a better security architecture for the nation, the IGP noted.
His comments come days after the federal government launched the portal for the sale of houses completed under its National Housing Programme, NHP.
Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, who launched the portal, said the houses were in one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom and duplex categories.
