The force men consisting of soldiers and officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) identified themselves as members of a joint task force. They arrived with a search warrant, saying they received information on “illegal activities” going on in the house. The security operatives were, however, said to have not discovered anything of interest in relation to the alleged illegal activities, and left after about an hour.Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied being involved in the search.A statement from the EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren read: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to claims in a section of the media that operatives of the commission today, October 29, 2021 stormed the Maitama, Abuja home of a Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Mary Odili, purportedly to execute a search.“The commission by this statement wishes to inform the public that the report is false as it did not carry out any operation at the home of Justice Odili.“If there was any such operation as claimed by the media, it was not carried out by the EFCC. Sheikh Ahmad Gumi: Untouchable Or Above The Law? By Ozodinukwe Okenwa

SOC Okenwa

Sheikh (Dr.) Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi is an Islamic cleric, scholar based in Kaduna. He was born in Kano on the 1st of October 1960, the very historic day Nigeria gained independence from the Great Britain. He was a former military officer with the rank of Captain in the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA). He is the current ‘Mufti’ and ‘Mufassir’ (scholar and writer) at the Kaduna central mosque. Gumi went to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and after graduation he enlisted into the Nigeria Defence Academy. He resigned from the military service at the rank of Captain and moved to Saudi Arabia to further his Islamic education at the Umm al-Qura University where he studied Islamic Jurisprudence.Sheikh Gumi is currently championing the unofficial policy of appeasement towards the terrorists, bandits and the Fulani herdsmen in the northern region of the country. From Kaduna to Zamfara, Niger to Katsina states Gumi had been reaching out to the bandits and terrorists in their camps inside the jungles fraternizing with them, negotiating freedom for abducted students and preaching about submission to the will of Allah. He had donated Islamic books and other materials to the outlaws comparing them with MEND, the militant Niger Delta forces bombing oil installations and blowing up pipelines before the late President Yar’Adua granted them blanket amnesty. But he was being economical with the truth as the comparison rings hollow and senseless. Comparing MEND to the terrorists and bandits up north is like comparing apples and oranges. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) was like a militarised pressure group that fought for the control of their natural resources being exploited by federal forces for the development of other lands where oil and gas were non-existent. More or less they were fighting for their rights! They smartly employed economic sabotage strategies to achieve their aim and objective.

SOC Okenwa

But despite his mediatory role, Gumi had stirred controversy for advocating talks and a general amnesty for the criminal groups responsible for the recent wave of kidnapping and banditry in northern Nigeria. Yet he is based in Kaduna where the diminutive State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, is known to be against any negotiation or payment of ransom to the bandits or abductors.Gumi, a Fulani, appears poised to make his mark at a critical time under Buharism when security challenges are multiplying by the day. Bereft of sound education, buffeted by massive unemployment and beaten silly by anthropogenic poverty Gumi’s Fulani brothers had found a lucrative avenue, banditry and kidnapping for ransom, to hit back at a careless society. The brazen way and manner Sheikh Gumi was going about the mission of appeasement or negotiation with the outlaws in the jungle leaves much to be desired. While his interventions had produced certain positive results (release of hostages for example) they had failed to halt the organized lawlessness in the northern region of the country. While some bandits had been talked out of banditry surrendering their arsenal of war to the government in exchange for rehabilitation and reintegration into the decent society some of them had reneged on their promise of peace by going right back into the jungle to continue their murderous criminal activities.Sheikh Gumi could be described as the strong advocate of the bandits and kidnappers. He has a soft spot for them! He had called for them to be granted blanket amnesty. At a time he had advocated for a Ministry to be created that would cater for their welfare and needs! And at another time he had argued for handsome ransom to be paid in exchange for those kidnapped!Recently a Senator representing Niger East in the National Assembly, Mohammed Musa, had declared on Channels TV that Gumi should be invited over by the security agents for questioning over his affiliation with bandits. The federal legislator opined that since Gumi knew the whereabout of the bandits meeting with them in the forests he should be able to provide the Nigerian government with information that could help to neutralise their operations.According to Senator Musa: “I think somebody like Gumi should be asked how he has contacts to reach these people. And if he can reach these people, why is it that he has not been able to help the government to get these people neutralised”.And recently too, a group calling itself the Southern Nigeria Frontier (SNF) had issued a statement calling for the Islamic cleric to be arrested “for his persistent defence of the dangerous bandits terrorising Nigeria especially, the North-West region”. Berating the Buhari regime as ‘soaked with nepotism’ the SNF group’s spokesman, Olufemi Lawson, claimed they would be “petitioning the relevant members of the diplomatic community, International Criminal Court and the UN agencies over Gumi’s complicity in the crime against humanity”.Calling on Nigerians to be alert and extremely vigilant the SNF declared that “we would not surrender to these terrorists and their enablers who are trying to take advantage of the silence of the federal government, to impose their war on all of us…Nigerians must gird their loins and be prepared to defend themselves and their land against marauders who are all over the place terrorising them.”But come to think of it, is Sheikh Ahmad Gumi untouchable or above the law? Or both? These questions deserve to be asked given the effrontery with which Sheikh Gumi goes about his self-imposed mission of reconciling a hopeless helpless society with their tormentors. Every crime merits its punishment in any decent society. We hold that either the controversial popular Islamic scholar is one of the untouchable Nigerians out there and therefore above the law or he is working in cahoots with the Buhari regime. Otherwise, his pro-terrorism/banditry activities ought to have been enough ground for the Department of State Services to invite him over for questioning or go for his outright arrest and prosecution.Pray, if Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministry fame in Enugu, for example, were to be seen on video visiting the Eastern Security Network camps in the jungle in the South-east engaging them in nocturnal meetings, distributing holy Bibles and advocating for amnesty for them would the DSS not have swung into action by arresting or detaining the fiery Catholic priest? If the military could apprehend the Nollywood legend, Chiwetalu Agu, in Onitsha not too long ago for wearing a flowing gown with the colours of the Biafran flag and the rising sun then Sheikh Gumi must be a special Fulani breed indeed. Perhaps the authorities are aware of what he is doing and therefore in tacit support of same. Our considered position is that since Sheikh Gumi had demonstrated his capacity as a vocal unapologetic apologist of terrorists, bandits and kidnappers he ought to be interrogated and investigated by the security agency specialized in such field. Perhaps in doing so it could be discovered that Gumi holds the key that could unlock the underworld of the rogues and outlaws making life a living hell for our compatriots up north. What is good for the goose should also be good for the gander. In a nation where double standards are applied in the interpretation of the law and the enforcement of same, in a huge zoo of a society where some animals are more valuable than the rest and therefore treated favourably there is bound to be social frictions and tensions. The solution is simple: sound indiscriminate leadership! Let Muhammadu Buhari, the embattled President, demonstrate one today.SOC Okenwasoco_abj_2006_rci@hotmail.fr

BREAKING: Former Nigerian Senator, Hosea Ehinlanwo Is Dead

Late Hosea Ehinlanwo

A two-term senator from Ondo State, Hosea Ehinlanwo, is dead.
He was 83 years old.

Late Hosea Ehinlanwo

SaharaReporters learnt that Ehinlanwo died in Abuja on Friday shortly after he returned from the hospital.
Ehinlanwo was born on August 2, 1938, in Erunna, Ilaje local government area of Ondo State
Ehinlanwo who represented the Ondo South Senatorial District for eight years between 2003 and 2011, confessed to playing a crucial role in pushing a third-term agenda for former President Olusegun Obasanjo before the 2007 general elections.
“Ehinlanwo died at home in Abuja shortly after he returned from the hospital,” a source revealed.
In April 2012, after he had left the National Assembly, Ehinlanwo explained in an interview the reason why he brought the infamous proposal for a third term for former President Obasanjo.
“I want to confess to you as an elder statesman that I will not deny that I brought up the motion, which was supported by the majority of the members of that committee,” Ehinlawo had said.
“I was looking at the experience of government at that time and I said if we give him (Obasanjo) another term, he might be able to take this country to sail across all these bottlenecks, headaches and incoherent leadership. That was my thought then,” he had said.
He was a member of the sub-committee on the executive, which was a branch of the National Assembly Committee on the Review of the Constitution headed by then-Senator Ibrahim Mantu.
The main committee had been split into a number of sub-committees each devoted to articulating proposed amendments on the various chapters of the 1999 Constitution.
Ehinlanwo belonged to the sub-committee on the executive, which was to consider proposals relating to the executive branch of government across the three tiers.
The sub-committee was headed by Senator Omar Hambagda, who ironically had been blamed for throwing up the proposal on account of his leadership of that sub-committee.
Ehinlanwo had a Bachelor of Law degree, a barrister at law and a master’s degree in business administration.
During his lifetime, he worked as a legal practitioner, teacher, University lecturer, and banker among others.

E2%80%99-story 2023: Buhari Reveals There Is Third Term Agenda As Earlier Exposed In SaharaReporters’ Story

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday confirmed an earlier expose by SaharaReporters that the Presidency cabal was plotting a Third Term agenda despite his maladministration and repressive eight-year regime.
Buhari had stated this at a meeting in Makkah with some Nigerians living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where he just ended a visit that he would serve his tenure and leave when his time was up, in a subtle confirmation of what the cabal was planning as earlier exposed by SaharaReporters.

President Muhammadu Buhari

Buhari said, “I swore by the Holy Qur’an that I will serve in accordance with the constitution and leave when my time is up. No ‘Tazarce’ (tenure extension). I don’t want anybody to start talking about and campaigning for an unconstitutional extension. I will not accept that.”In a statement issued by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Buhari warned anyone canvassing for a tenure extension for him.The statement further said President Buhari also tacitly expressed support for efforts to increase the role of technology in the nation’s elections, arguing that the introduction of the card reader and electronic register was God’s answer to his prayers, having been cheated of his victory in three previous elections.“After the third so-called defeat, I said, ‘God Dey’. My opponents laughed at me but God answered my prayers by bringing in technology. At that point, nobody can steal their votes or buy them.”President Buhari, who ended his visit to the Kingdom with the Friday Prayers at the Grand Mosque in Makkah said he would continue to abide by the constitution in all its ramifications and he will at all times supervise and deal with his ministers on the same basis.

He gave assurances at the meeting that in the balance of “eighteen months or so of my time left, whatever I can do to improve the life of Nigerians, I will do it for the country.”The President commended Nigerians in Saudi Arabia for representing the country well and projecting its good image. He also asked citizens to be fair to his administration at all times, asking critics to compare the security situations in the North-East and South-South in 2015 and the current situation.“My problem is the North-West where people are killing and stealing from one another. I had to be very hard on them and I will continue to be very hard until we put them in line and bring back order,” he said.SaharaReporters on October 7 revealed that some members of the Aso Rock cabal were pushing a third-term agenda for Buhari and for the amendment of the Nigerian Constitution to allow the President to stay beyond 2023.
Section 137 (1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), provides that “a person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if he has been elected to such office at any two previous elections”.
A similar move was made about 14 years for former President Olusegun Obasanjo, which failed.
The so-called Third Term Agenda collapsed on May 16, 2006, when the Nigerian Senate threw out the Constitutional Amendments Bill. Obasanjo left office a year later on May 29, 2007.
Sources in the Presidency had told SaharaReporters that members of the Aso Rock cabal were in on it and that some of them who had presidential ambitions ahead of the 2023 elections had been told to step down.
One of them was the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who had been eyeing the Presidency, as SaharaReporters had earlier reported.
The cabal, comprising some members of the President’s extended family, friends, and some northern governors and leaders were described as the powers behind the throne.
The recent clamour by Northern elites had also been linked to the third-term agenda, with strong northern voices stressing that the region could retain the Presidency following Buhari’s departure from office.
“Recently, members of the cabal with interest in Presidency were told to step down. Malami is now back as Kebbi State APC (All Progressives Congress) Governorship candidate after initially telling people he could run for President,” one of the sources had told SaharaReporters.
“Also, the recent strong clamour for the presidency to remain in the Northern part of the country is as a result of this. Guess who they want to use to push the agenda? It’s the same person you know, the APC candidate in the November governorship election in Anambra, Andy Uba.
“Uba is expected to start the third term campaign when he wins as Anambra governor. He did it before for Obasanjo, paying off lawmakers in the failed third term campaign. He is the one being used by the cabals to do the dirty job again many years after.”
“Buhari to visit Glasgow, Scotland, Paris, France and Dubai, UAE before the end of 2021 amidst strong rumour of third term agenda,” another source had said.
This comes two years after an APC chieftain, Charles Enya filed a suit, seeking the amendment of the constitution to allow Buhari to get another term in office.
Enya, who served as Organising Secretary to Buhari during the 2019 general elections had filed the suit (FHC/AI/CS/90/19) before a Federal High Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
He asked Malami, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, as well as the National Assembly to remove constitutional clauses hindering elected presidents and governors from seeking a third term in office.
The APC member sought possible expungement of both sections. According to him, “that section 137(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,1999 (as amended) restricting the president to only two terms of four years each, is inoperative by virtue of its discriminatory nature in relation to the executive and legislative branches of government in Nigeria, and therefore null and void and thus inapplicable”.
He also sought an “order of the court nullifying and setting aside Sections 137(1)(b) and 182(1) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). And directing the first and second defendants to delete and expunge sections 137(1)(b) and 182(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, (as amended).”
A few days after, Buhari claimed he wasn’t going to make the mistake of attempting a third term.
“I’m not going to make the mistake of attempting a third term. Besides the age, I swore by the holy book that I would go by the constitution and the constitution said two terms,” the President had said during the APC NEC meeting on November 22, 2019.

TakeItBack Movement Condemns Ogun Students’ Extortion, Arrest By Nigerian Army Personnel

A pro-democracy group, TakeItBack Movement, has condemned the oppressive actions of the Nigerian Army personnel against students of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) located in Ijagun, Ogun State.TASUED students, who were being extorted and harassed by the military operatives, were reportedly arrested and detained when they took to streets to protest.

The TakeItBack Movement described the military action as a heinous act which infringed on the human rights of these learners, while calling on the state government and other stakeholders to wade in.These were contained in a statement by the students’ wing of the group, signed by its National Coordinator, Damilare Adenola, which was made available to SaharaReporters on Friday. The statement reads, “The attention of the TakeItBack Movement has been drawn to the heinous and draconian actions of armed-military men on the peace loving students of Tai Solarin University of Education. “With dismay, we received the news about how the peaceful and law abiding students of TASUED who were going about their daily activities were not only extorted in broad day light but were also unjustly exploited by unruly and unconscionable military men.”We also have it that in the heat of the act committed by these evil men, the students of TASUED took to the streets where some of the students were illegally arrested and unconstitutionally detained by these same unruly military men.

“It must be understood that you cannot beat a child and expect that the child does not cry. The students came out to show their displeasure as regards the broad day light extortion and exploitation of exorbitant fees and undue clampdown by the military men.”The movement finds it offensive and more of a gross violation and encroachment on the rights of the students to move freely as contained under section 41, CFRN and to freely speak their minds in public gatherings as safely guaranteed under the sections of 39 & 40, CFRN.”That military men will unduly and unruly clamp down and exploit students is a pointer that we are in a full blown Hitler regime. We cannot continue to live in the Hobbesian state where life was solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short; for goodness sake, this is supposed to be a democracy.”The movement is not only in support of the resolution of the students’ union but it has also held that if this unconscionable act by the military men on the students continues, it will not hesitate to organise students of the wing on logical and social grounds to combat such act to a standstill through civil mass action.”In addition, we call on the Ogun State Government, the Ministry of Education and other appropriate government quarters to put a stop to the oppression of students in the state.”
