Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger which all went down on Monday afternoon with users worldwide reporting the crashes, have now been restored.
SaharaReporters observed that the sites were restored around 10.45pm after about six hours of crash, cutting off billions of users around the world.

The online services all share an infrastructure and are owned by Facebook, which is owned by American billionaire Mark Zuckerberg.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the crash started around 16:41BST, according to the website Downdetector. While just two problems were reported at 16:26, the site says, this had jumped to more than 27,000 just fifteen minutes later.
According to The National, users attempting to access Facebook on their browser were shown a blank error page, while those using WhatsApp or Instagram mobile apps were able to view existing content, but nothing new has loaded.
“We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing Facebook app. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” Facebook had said via @facebookapp
Posting on Twitter, which has not seen any issues, the Facebook app had said it was aware of outages affecting “some people”.

E2%80%99s-suicide-nigerian-government-support-herders-against-state-governments-court-%E2%80%93-falana It’s Suicide For Nigerian Government To Support Herders Against State Governments In Court – Falana

Femi Falana (SAN)

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has described as unconstitutional and a political suicide moves by the Federal Government to support herders who are planning to challenge the anti-open grazing law in court.
Falana said this while reacting to a statement by Umar Gwandu, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, that the Federal Government supports moves by herders to sue the Southern Governors over the anti-open grazing bills they recently signed into law in their respective states.

Femi Falana (SAN)

Falana said the decision of the Federal Government to take sides in the dispute between the herders and the Southern Governors is a “constitutional aberration and political suicide”.
He added, “Specifically, it is a gross violation of Section 17 of the constitution which provides that the Nigerian people are entitled to equal rights and opportunities before the law and Section 42 thereof which has prohibited the Federal Government from conferring advantage on any group of citizens.
“Accordingly, the resources of the entire Nigerian people cannot be dissipated on defending herders against state governments.”
He further said the alliance between the herders and the Federal Government was at variance with the National Livestock Transformation Plan of the government which had adopted ranching.
“In defending the herders in the case, the Federal Government will certainly run into serious contradictions having made available the sum of N6.2billion to Katsina for ranching; the Federal Government will not be permitted to turn round to embrace open grazing. The court will not allow the Federal Government to approbate and reprobate at the same time,” he said.

E2%80%93-human South-East Governors, Politicians May Be Behind Continuous Killings, Not IPOB – Human Rights Group

File photo used to illustrate story.

A group, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has stated that some governors and the Nigerian Government’s officials may be behind the killings and security challenges ravaging the South-East region.
HURIWA alleged that political and public office holders responsible for the killings were making efforts to undermine the agitations of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the South-East.

File photo used to illustrate story.

The rights group made these statements while urging the Nigerian Army to respect human rights in the South-East region.
HURIWA asked the Nigerian Army to probe the killings in the South-East because some officials of the Nigerian Government might be responsible for insecurity in the Southeast.
In a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA said the Nigerian Army must work with the mindset that members of IPOB might not be responsible for the killings in the region.
HURIWA said, “Following report that the Nigerian Army has launched multiple military exercises covering the South-East region of Nigeria aimed at checking the excessive cases of attacks targeting strategic national security institutions, personnel and the killing of civilians by unknown gunmen, the military high command should abide by rules of engagement, respect for Human Rights of civilians and adherence to the principles of the rule of law.
“The Nigerian Army should not work under a bandwagon conspiratorial plots that the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra carry out the attacks and killings but the army must be open-minded, look inwards and investigate the possibility that these attacks may have been masterminded by federal government officials and some governors of the South-East of Nigeria who may want to undermine the public acceptance and popularity of the agitation for self-determination as canvassed by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra.
“In the past few months, many Igbo youths have been killed, arrested, incarcerated and tortured by the security forces under the guise that all Igbo youths are members of IPOB.”
The group, however, revealed that all its members and its militia wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) should be protected.
“Members of IPOB or ESN are entitled to the full protection of the law and therefore must never be killed extra-legally by the armed forces of Nigeria which is an institution created by the ground norm,” he said.

Facebook Owner, Zuckerberg Loses $7billion In Hours As Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram Remain Down

Facebook owner, Mark Zuckerberg’s personal wealth has fallen by nearly $7 billion in a few hours, knocking him down a notch on the list of the world’s richest people, after a whistleblower came forward and outages took Facebook Inc.’s flagship products offline.
This is just as Facebook’s co-messaging apps, WhatsApp and Instagaram remained down after four hours of global outage which has upset businesses and disconnected billions of people around the world.

According to Bloomberg, a selloff sent the social-media giant’s stock plummeting around 5% on Monday, adding to a drop of about 15% since mid-September.
The stock slide on Monday sent Zuckerberg’s worth down to $120.9 billion, dropping him below Bill Gates to No. 5 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He’s lost about $19 billion of wealth since September 13, when he was worth nearly $140 billion, according to the index.
On September 13, the Wall Street Journal began publishing a series of stories based on a cache of internal documents, revealing that Facebook knew about a wide range of problems with its products — such as Instagram’s harm to teenage girls’ mental health and misinformation about the Jan. 6 Capitol riots — while downplaying the issues in public. The reports have drawn the attention of government officials, and on Monday, the whistleblower revealed herself.
In response, Facebook has emphasized that the issues facing its products, including political polarization, are complex and not caused by technology alone.
“I think it gives people comfort to assume that there must be a technological or a technical explanation for the issues of political polarization in the United States,” Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president of global affairs, told CNN.

Buhari Preaches Dialogue To End Crisis In Ethiopia After Threatening Nigerian Agitation Groups

President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, called for peace and stability in Ethiopia, amid the many challenges facing the East African country.
This was contained in his goodwill message at the inauguration ceremony of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for a second five-year term in office.

President Buhari

Buhari’s stance for peace and dialogue in Ethiopia is, however, in stark contrast with his approach to agitation groups in Nigeria, whom the president, in his Independence Day speech vowed to suppress – naming Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) as the culprits leading the pack
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this on Monday in a statement titled ‘President Buhari urges peace, stability in Ethiopia as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed begins second five-year term’
Buhari pledged that Nigeria would continue to support the unity and territorial integrity of Ethiopia
He was quoted as saying, “We are well aware of the many challenges facing the people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and we encourage all parties to come together in the interest of the unity, progress and wellbeing of Ethiopia
“Your Excellency, you, therefore, have a great opportunity to continue to work for the peace and stability of Ethiopia.
Buhari said Nigeria, like many other countries, was counting on Ahmed’s leadership to unleash the great economic potentials of Ethiopia by expanding investment opportunities, deepening relations and building trust at home and abroad
Speaking on the elections that brought the 2019 Nobel Peace Laureate back to power, the President was quoted as saying, “I commend the courage and commitment of the people of Ethiopia to the values and principles of democracy
“I strongly believe that the outcome of the elections held in June is a reflection of the desire of the Ethiopian people for transformation through a free, fair and credible electoral process.
According to him, Abiy’s victory at the election, clearly affirmed the confidence of the Ethiopian people in his leadership, courage and credentials, adding that it also underscores the years of his contributions to the development of Ethiopia’s modern democracy.2019Buhari pledged that Nigeria would continue to support the unity and territorial integrity of Ethiopia.”..”…..9”..”…..democracy.

Facebook Domain ‘Stolen’ Amid Global Shutdown

Facebook services spanning Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook itself have been shut down following an attempt to hijack the company’s domain name.
There has been a widely reported inability to access the services since Monday afternoon after a yet-to-be-identified hacker nuked the DNS A; an address file that holds an IP address of the domain name and AAA records for Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp.

Earlier the company had tweeted about Whatsapp, saying, “We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible.”
The main domain of Facebook company, Facebook.com, is now available for purchase.
Details of the hack are yet to unravel.
Following the global outage of some social media platforms, WhatsApp has said it is currently working to get back.
This is not the first time this year social networking apps have suffered an outage.
In April and June this year, the social networking sites all went down due to a “network configuration issue”, a development that affected their users across the globe.
Users were not able to send messages, receive messages on Whatsapp, as all the messages and chats were left undelivered.

South-South Governors Meet To Launch Regional Security Outfit, Governor Ayade Absent

Governor Ben Ayade

The governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade, was again absent at the meeting of the South-South Governors’ Forum where the state Chief Executives met to establish a regional security outfit that will tackle issues of degenerating security in the geo-political zone.
Ayade, who has come to be seen as the black sheep among the South-South Governors, was originally elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but later defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Governor Ben Ayade

CRSiMAGES

Speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt after the meeting, the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa stated, “After an extensive deliberation, the Council resolved that bearing in mind that most of the states have established their security organs, we approved the regional security architecture which will be launched soon.”
According to the communique, the governors also resolved; “To equivocally support the decision of states to collect the Value Added Tax by states, we resolved to join the suit at the Supreme Court.
“The Council urged the President and the National Assembly to take necessary measures to revisit some unfair aspects of the recently signed Petroleum Industry Bill now Act, to ensure fairness and equity.”
“We urge that the amendment should include a clear definition of host communities and that the trustees should be appointed by the state government.
“The Council called on the President and the federal government to uphold the law establishing the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) by appropriately constituting its board.
“In addition, we express the hope that the federal government will make the forensic audit report public and do justly and fairly with the report with a view to strengthening the capacity of NDDC to meet its obligations to the people of the region.
“Council regretted that the President and the federal government entirely failed to give reasonable consideration to requests made by the region during the dialogue with the special delegation led by Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the Chief of Staff to the President. Notable among the requests was the relocation of NNPC subsidiaries and IOCs headquarters to Niger Delta and the completion of a number of projects in the region, notably roads”, Okowa added.

E2%80%98damage%E2%80%99-done-pandora-papers World Leaders Scramble To Limit ‘Damage’ Done By Pandora Papers

Governments in different countries around the world on Monday moved to limit the fallout from a release of millions of documents detailing how leaders have used offshore tax havens to stash assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
About 35 present and former leaders were indicted in the 11.9million documents which leaked from financial services companies across the world including reports of luxury homes on the French Riviera, Monte Carlo and California.

The documents, known as the ‘Pandora Papers,’ were obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and released in stories by media partners, which included The Washington Post, the BBC and The Guardian.
It contained allegations ranging from corruption to money laundering and tax avoidance.
Although holding assets offshore or using shell companies is not illegal in most countries.
But the findings are embarrassing for leaders who have since pushed austerity measures or campaigned against corruption.
In the document, Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, was not named but he was linked via associates to secret assets in Monaco, particularly a waterfront home acquired by a Russian woman reported to have had a child with him.
Kremlin Spokesman, Dmitry Peskov said, “This is just a set of largely unsubstantiated claims,”
“We didn’t see anything on hidden wealth within Putin’s inner circle.”
Jordan was also keen to play down the revelations, which exposed how King Abdullah II created a network of offshore companies and tax havens to amass a $100 million property empire from California to London.
The country’s royal court said the properties were funded with the king’s personal wealth and were used for official and private visits.
“Any allegations that link these private properties to public funds or assistance are baseless and deliberate attempts to distort facts,” a statement said.
Meanwhile, The ICIJ found links between almost 1,000 companies in offshore havens and 336 high-level politicians and public officials, including more than a dozen serving heads of state and government, country leaders, cabinet ministers, ambassadors and others.
It was learnt that more than two-thirds of the companies were set up in the British Virgin Islands.
Both the Family and associates of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev — long accused of corruption in the central Asian nation — are alleged to have been secretly involved in property deals in Britain worth hundreds of millions.
The documents also revealed how Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis — who faces an election later this week — failed to declare an offshore investment company used to purchase a chateau worth $22 million in the south of France.
Babis refuted the claim of the document in tweet saying “I have never done anything illegal or wrong,”
He called the revelations a smear attempt aimed at influencing the election.
Nearly two million of the 11.9 million leaked documents came from a Panamanian law firm called Alcogal, which the ICIJ said had become “a magnet for the rich and powerful” seeking to hide wealth offshore.
Alcogal, whose clients allegedly included the Jordanian monarch and Czech prime minister, rejected accusations of shady dealings.
ICIJ’s director Gerard Ryle said in a video accompanying the investigation that those best placed to halt such practices were the ones who were benefiting most.
Transparency International’s Maira Martini therefore, called for an end to the offshore industry, saying the investigation once more offered “clear evidence” of how it “promotes corruption and financial crime”.
Among the other revelations from the ICIJ investigation:
— Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is shown to have legally avoided paying stamp duty on a London property by buying the offshore company that owned it.
— Members of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s inner circle are said to secretly own companies and trusts holding millions of dollars. Khan vowed to “take appropriate action” if any wrongdoing is proved.
— Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, is alleged to secretly own a network of offshore companies.
— Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso and Gabon’s Ali Bongo were linked with companies in the British Virgin Islands in a report by Le Monde, one of the media partners in the investigation.
— Colombian singer Shakira, the German supermodel Claudia Schiffer and the Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar are also named, with representatives for all three telling the ICIJ the investments were legitimate.
The Pandora Papers are the latest in a series of mass leaks handled by the ICIJ, from LuxLeaks in 2014, to the 2016 Panama Papers.
They were followed by the Paradise Papers in 2017 and FinCen files in 2020.

E2%80%99s-sit-home-closes-shops-should-be-punished-%E2%80%93 Any Kogi, Benue Resident Who Supports IPOB’s Sit-at-home, Closes Shops Should Be Punished – Arewa Forum

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has kicked against the appeal by the Indigenous People Of Biafra for the Middle Belt people to join its sit-at-home campaign.
In a statement by Yerima Shettima, the Arewa Youths National President, the group said the Northern region will not be a party to “a deliberate, politically-motivated plan to undermine or worsen the nation’s current security challenges.”.

The AYCF said the North had come a long way in understanding the use of constitutional and democratic means of channelling legitimate grievances, and could not therefore, be a party to any undemocratic move.
The group added that since the governors of the South-East seem to be satisfied with the activities of IPOB, “we hope they will continue with the sit-at-home for another ten years and we wish them the very best of luck. We know the South-East is IPOB’s home but exporting their activities to the North will be faced with massive resistance from all lovers of peace in the North”.
It called on northern governors to take punitive measures against anyone sympathising with activities of IPOB.
It added, “We call on Northern Governors to step up action in order to ensure this outlawed terror gang called IPOB does not infiltrate the region. We also expect the governors to ensure that any Northerner who shuts down his shop in solidarity with IPOB, should have that shop sealed forever.
“And for the avoidance of doubt, we will not fold our arms and watch the North get further destabilised by a violent strategy, whether in Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger or any state in Northern Nigeria because our hands are already full with challenges of insecurity and we are praying fervently day and night to find lasting peace.”
AYCF also condemned what it described as the use of killings and arson to press home a demand that the democratic process in existence would have to take care of.

South-East Under Siege; A Short Memo To Governor Dave Umahi, By Charles Ogbu

Mr governor Sir,

It is with a heart burdened with grief that I address this memo to you IN YOUR CAPACITY AS THE CHAIRMAN OF SOUTH-EAST GOVERNORS FORUM. And forgive me for not addressing you as ‘His Excellency’ because, in this context, I honestly don’t think you are deserving of that title.

Mr governor Sir, as the governor of Ebonyi state, you have been remarkably outstanding in terms of infrastructural development like roads, bridges, fly-overs, etc., especially in the state capital, Abakaliki. One who finds himself in Abakaliki at night would be forgiven to mistake the city for London or Dubai and this is no exaggeration. The quality of the roads, the fly-overs, and other solid structures leaves one with a smiling face. Indeed, it is my view that other governors of the south-east should come to you for a tutorial on how to build solid durable roads with indigenous contractors and manpower. This is not to say that governance starts and ends with building roads, bridges, fly-overs, and other physical structures. Not at all. But it is a very important part of it. And in this respect, you deserve some accolades.
But,
That’s as far as the harvests of praises go.
With regards to your role as the Chairman of Southeast Governors Forum sir, you have been a SPECTACULAR FAILURE. Very very uninspiring, irresponsible, and irresponsive to the yearnings of Ndigbo. There is no ‘but’. There is no ‘if’ here. And please, do not let any sycophants deceive you by telling you otherwise.
As I write, Mr governor, the southeastern part of Nigeria is effectively under the control of non-state actors who order Ndigbo around. They decide when we come out and when we stay indoors. They tell us when to remove the Nigerian flag and when to put it back. And like a people without an alternative, we obey them ex abundantia cautela (out of the abundance of caution). As I write, Mr governor, our region has been a killing field. Innocent Igbo lives and property have been terminated and continue to be terminated in a most brutal way by criminals and terrorists who now run the show in a region rated the most peaceful in the country not so long ago.
In the midst of all these, Mr governor, it’s been nothing but a very thunderous silence and inaction from you and your colleague governors who we elected to protect and keep us safe.
Despite billions of naira available to you guys as federal allocation, internally generated revenue, and security votes, Where is the leadership????
As the Chairman of the southeast governors forum, pray tell, Mr governor, what exactly is your job if not to galvanise and organise your fellow governors to protect and defend the interest of the Southeast? And which interest could be more important than their right to life? In all honesty, can you say you have done this job at all, let’s not talk of doing it well?
A few days ago, I watched you condemn in strong terms the now-suspended sit-at-home by the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) describing it as destroying the Eastern economy which depends largely on everyday buying and selling. You equally lamented that we the Igbos are now killing one another.
Unlike some Igbos especially those of them in the diaspora scattered in so many Igbo WhatsApp fora who believe in Igbo Exceptionalism of ‘Igbos don’t kill each other’, I am of the opinion that what we are going through now is largely self-inflicted. Yes, we are the main authors of this current misfortune of ours. The weekly sit-at-home was a very foolish measure which would only achieve the evil aim the economic/food blockade during the Biafra war failed to achieve. And yes, the festival of blood happening in the southeast is by Igbos against their fellow Igbos. If non-Igbos are involved, it is Igbos who created the fertile ground. We as Ndigbo should be humble enough to do some introspection and take responsibility instead of this very irresponsible act of blaming other people for woes we knowingly brought upon ourselves. So on that, I agree with you.
But Mr governor sir, if we are to pay ourselves the courtesy of being blunt, we’d admit we didn’t just get here by magic. We got here as a result of FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP by the forum you lead. The DELIBERATE REFUSAL of the Southeast Governors Forum under your watch to listen to the cries of Ndigbo on Regional Security got us here.
For years, the Igbo masses cried, wailed, shouted, and pleaded with you governors to set up a regional security outfit to combat the menace of marauding Fulani herdsmen operating with STATE-SPONSORED IMPUNITY. Not only did you guys refuse to heed the demand of the Igbo people you are supposedly in office to serve, you, in your capacity as the Chairman of the forum went on Channels TV to vehemently argue that regional security outfit is unconstitutional in a federal system of government. You made this argument at a time the southwest was already establishing their own regional security outfit known as AMOTEKUN. You made this argument knowing that the first and most important duty of any government anywhere in the world is the protection of lives and property and that the federal government has manifestly REFUSED to use their security operatives to combat the herdsmen terrorism.
Riding on the vacuum created by the southeast governors forum under you, IPOB created an armed wing known as the Eastern Security Network which they claim was to fight the menace of the herdsmen.
To be clear, Mr governor, I don’t believe that putting AK-47 in the hands of non-state actors who are not accountable to any constituted authority, have no known office and no clear structure will produce anything but total anarchy and insecurity no matter how well-intentioned. But the truth is, your REFUSAL to listen to the cry of Ndigbo on the necessity of a Regional Security created a vacuum which, as you know, nature abhors. So you bear maximum responsibility for getting us here.
Mr governor sir, I don’t agree that you and your colleagues are completely responsible for some extremely foolish and suicidal actions taken by SOME Igbos. Actions such as OPENLY showing support and hailing the activities of the Unknown-Gun-Men as they go about killing security operatives and taking their weapons, some of which are now being used against Ndigbo, breaking the Owerri prison and releasing hundreds of criminals back into the Igbo society, etc., but I do think your irresponsible leadership as the chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum left Ndigbo hopeless and frustrated. Out of this hopelessness and frustration, most Igbos turned to non-state actors for mental and psychological refuge. So there is a sense in which those who blame all of this on your failure to show leadership are not entirely wrong. When leaders fail or refuse to do the right thing, the wrong people may step in and end up making things worse.
Your failure is not only limited to refusal to set up a regional security outfit for the region, it extends to your nonchalant attitude to other regional issues of existential nature. For instance, after the Southern Governors Forum met in Lagos to agree that all Southern states should pass a law banning Anti-Open Grazing of Cattle in their respective states, a major umbrella under which terrorist herdsmen hide to carry out their terror, the Southeast region under your leadership has been the only region that has shown less commitment to the resolution of the Southern Governors block. And let’s face it, this is because of your lack of leadership. Enugwu and Abia are the only two Eastern states that have passed this law. Imo governor has made it clear he has no intention of implementing the law even if it has been passed by the previous government. Anambra governor clearly stated the state doesn’t need such a law even as I understand it is now before the state parliament. But in your own state which has witnessed the worst cases of herdsmen atrocities, mum has been the word. This is even as you ought to be the main mobiliser and motivator to your colleague governors in this respect.
The last Southern Governors Forum meeting held in the same region where you are the Chairman of the Governors and ought to be the Chief host, you violated a very fundamental Igbo tradition of not welcoming the same people you yourself invited to your home. The next we saw was you going on Channels TV to ridicule the decision of the same Southern Governors Forum to which you belong.
Despite heading the Southeast Governors Forum, your position on Restructuring has been exactly the opposite of what the majority of the southeasterners and the entire southern Nigeria stands for. So how do you explain all that?
Mr governor sir, this is supposed to be a short memo so let me summarise; Ndigbo are facing a grave existential crisis right about now. And leadership is an act, not just mere rhetoric. So please, take a deep introspection and make up your mind on whether you are ready to discharge the duties expected of your office as the Chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum. And in the event you are not ready, please, honourably step aside and give room for another.
While hoping you will take urgent steps with your colleague governors towards putting an end to the mindless killings going on in the East, do kindly accept my warm regard.

Charles Ogbu.
