Thugs Allegedly Loyal To Ogun Governor’s Aide Shoot 5 People During Cultural Festival

Five people were reportedly shot by thugs allegedly loyal to Biyi Adeleye, the Special Adviser on Politics to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun.

The incident was said to have happened at the Afotamodi Festival Day celebration at Isara Remo, held on Sunday at AUD school field, in the Remo North Local Goverment Area of Ogun State.

It was learnt that when Adeleye arrived at the venue, some thugs allegedly with him started shooting into the air for no reason, leaving some guests with gunshot wounds.

According to a source in the community, the victims were taken to the hospital and were later discharged.

Solomon Osho, a member of the state House of Assembly is said to have contributed towards the medical bills of the victims.

Information made available to SaharaReporters from a source said. “The incident happened at the Afotamodi Festival Day celebration of Isara Remo, held at AUD school field. Five people were recorded to have been shot by thugs loyal to the special adviser to Ogun State Governor on Politics, Hon. Biyi Adeleye.
“The incident occurred not long after the programme of event kickstarted officially by the arrival of the Odemo of Isara, Oba Albert Adebose Mayungbe. Other dignitaries, such as the Honourable Member of the State Assembly representing Remo North, Barrister Solomon Osho, followed suit and arrived at the venue peacefully and responsibly. “When it got to the turn of Hon Biyi a few minutes after, his procession into the venue was rough to the extent that some thugs who accompanied him started shooting into the air for no reason. It was while doing this, some guests were hit by stray bullets.
“Unfortunately, all the five victims were part of the delegates from the Association of Isara Indigenes, from the United States of America, who had just arrived purposely for the celebration. They have only just agreed to come home and participate in the development and give back to their hometown, after much persuasion and lobbying from Isara Community Development Association.”

Pandora Papers: Global Investigation By 600 Journalists Exposes Financial Secrets Of Some Rich, Powerful Nigerians

Pandora Papers.

A new global investigation exposing the offshore hideaways of some of the world’s most powerful personalities is launching today (Sunday) after two years of discreet work by investigative journalists around the world.

The project, known as Pandora Papers, is facilitated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, ICIJ, which obtained a trove of 11.9 million confidential files.

Pandora Papers.

ICIJ-Inkyfada-Tayma Ben Ahmed

The ongoing reporting involves 600 journalists from 150 news organisations around the world, Premium Times reports.

The journalists spent two years studying and sorting files, contextualising information, tracking down sources, and analysing public records and other documents.

It revealed the financial secrets of not less than 35 current and former world leaders, more than 330 public officials in more than 91 countries and territories.

The leaked files were reportedly retrieved from 14 offshore services firms around the world that set up shell companies and other offshore entities for clients, many of which are influential politicians, businesspersons, and criminals, seeking to conceal their financial dealings.

The stories will also reveal how some of the most influential Nigerians, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, current and former state governors, past and present lawmakers, businesspeople, a popular pastor, and many others, set up shell companies, and sometimes warehouse huge financial assets, in notorious secrecy jurisdictions.

It will further reveal how these individuals flout extant laws and legislation as they hide these assets, some of which have attracted the interest of law enforcement agencies in the UK and elsewhere.

ICIJ explained that “the Pandora Papers investigation provides an unequalled perspective on how money and power operate in the 21st century and how the rule of law has been bent and broken around the world by a system of financial secrecy enabled by the U.S. and other wealthy nations.”

“In popular imagination, the offshore system is often seen as a far-flung scattering of palm-shaded islands. The Pandora Papers showed that the offshore money machine operates in every corner of the world, including financial capitals of the richest and most powerful economies,” the ICIJ added.

The Pandora Papers investigation will reveal the secret owners of offshore companies, anonymous bank accounts, private jets, yachts, mansions, and artworks by Picasso, Banksy, and other masters around the world.

According to ICIJ, “It provides more information than what’s usually available to law enforcement agencies and cash-strapped governments.

“Large numbers of public officials and mega-wealthy individuals who in some cases are one and the same use the offshore system to manage, move and, often, hide their wealth. They play by different rules from the rest of humanity, in a game of intrigue and privilege that fuels crime and corruption and entrenches the power of the world’s economic and political elites.

“The Pandora Papers investigation is larger and more global than even ICIJ’s landmark Panama Papers investigation, which rocked the world in 2016, spawning police raids and new laws in dozens of countries and the fall of prime ministers in Iceland and Pakistan.

“The Panama Papers came from the files of a single offshore services provider: the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. The Pandora Papers shine a light on a far wider cross-section of the lawyers, middlemen, and fixers who are at the heart of the offshore industry.

“The Pandora Papers lay bare the finances of many more country leaders and public officials than did the Panama Papers and provide more than twice as much information about the ownership of offshore companies. In all, the new leaks uncover the real owners of more than 29,000 offshore companies the owners come from more than 200 countries, with the largest contingents from Russia, the U.K., Argentina, China, and Brazil.”

The Panama Papers series will be launched just five years after the Panama Papers Revelations which were published in 2016.

That investigation exposed offshore companies linked to more than 140 politicians in more than 50 countries – including fourteen world leaders.

It also uncovered offshore hideaways tied to mega-banks, corporate bribery scandals, drug kingpins, Syria’s air war on its own citizens, and a network of people close to Russian President Vladimir Putin who shuffled as much as $2 billion around the world.

In the course of that investigation in Nigeria, more than 30 stories with damning details revealing the secret offshore asset of many prominent Nigerians, were published by Premium Times.

It is not illegal for Nigerians who are not public officers to own offshore accounts, and many prominent businesses do have them.

However, some public officials found to have accounts did not disclose them as expected by law.

This newspaper’s investigations revealed the secret offshore assets of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his wife Toyin; as well as those of Mr Saraki’s predecessor, David Mark.

It also revealed how the late governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, began looting his state and hiding public funds in offshore structures and how a former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, organised the stealing of the oil-rich state’s fund via offshore companies.

The investigations also revealed a network of shell companies in offshore tax havens linked to Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and his brother, Sayyu Dantata; as well as the offshore companies of Wale Tinubu, the chief executive of Nigeria’s biggest indigenous oil company, Oando Plc, among others.

Similarly, the stories also exposed the secret offshore company of one of Africa’s most influential televangelists, Temitope Joshua, popularly called T.B. Joshua, who died in June.

Other prominent Nigerians named in the investigations were former Minister of Defence and billionaire businessman, Theophilus Danjuma; businessman, Hakeem Belo-Osagie; Globacom CEO, Mike Adenuga; Governor Abubakar Sadiq Sani Bello of Niger State; the late Ooni of Ife, Okunade Sijuwade; former Arik Air Chairman, Joseph Arumemi-Johnson and his wife, Mary, as well as two then-serving senators – Andy Uba (Anambra) and Ibrahim Gobir (Sokoto).

Other top businesspersons, politicians, and their family members were also found in the infamous database, including those who were then holding public offices.

The revelations sparked outrage across Nigeria, with activists, civil society organisations, the labour movement, and the general public calling for extensive probes of those mentioned. But none of the violators has so far been prosecuted or sanctioned.

E2%80%93group-tells Implement Report Of #EndSARS Panel On Police Brutality, Extrajudicial Killings In Delta–Group Tells Governor

The Delta State branch of Take IT Back movement, TIB, has called on the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa to implement the report submitted to him by the Chairman of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry, Justice Celestina Ogisi.

The group disclosed that the state government had promised to consider the implementation of the findings and recommendations of the panel.

It was gathered that for months, the state government had assured that justice would be done.

However, it was learnt that nothing had so far been done to implement the recommendations of the reports.

The judicial panel of inquiry had received 86 petitions out of which 37 were struck out while 49 were duly considered by the panel.

Before the panel submitted the report, it had assessed the various evidence provided and subsequently drawn conclusions to validate the complaints and recommended compensations and other medical measures.

Some of these were the payment of compensation to victims of police brutality as well as extrajudicial killings in the state.

According to the Coordinator of the Delta State Chapter of TIB, Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho, the police are meant to protect the rights of citizens and not routinely breach such rights without being held accountable.

He said in a statement on Sunday, “We are by this press statement calling on the Governor of Delta State, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa to implement the State’s Judicial Panel of Inquiry Report into complaints of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in the state submitted to him by the Chairman of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry, Justice Celestina Ogisi (retired in June 2021.

“It is almost three months now; the said report was submitted to the Government of Delta State for implementation by the Chairman of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry, Justice Celestina Ogisi (Retd.).

“It will be recalled, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on receiving the report from the panel chairman, made several promises that his administration would consider and implement the decisions of the panel, while assuring that the recommendations of the panel would be looked into by the state’s executive council, he said justice would be done as much as possible.

“The learned Governor acknowledged the fact that the #EndSARS Protest was impactful in the country, it opened a new chapter in the history of our country, where it became very obvious that many of our citizens across the nation were suffering silently.

“It is only when the #EndSARS panel report is implemented by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa that our police officers who do not do their job the right way can learn some lessons. As we speak, some policemen are still taking the law into their hands and treating people they are supposed to protect as if they ought not to exist.

“Only recently, the Delta State Police Command recorded another police brutality from two dismissed policemen from B ’Division, Warri, Sgt Felix Ebikabowei, and Ndubuisi Abazie respectively, who orchestrated a gruesome attack on one Mr. Omensa Broderick, a commercial tricycle rider while on illegal duty.

“Recalling that the Panel was inaugurated on October 9, 2020, to receive and inquire into complaints of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in the state, evaluate the evidence presented and draw conclusions as to the validity of the complaint(s) and recommend compensation and other remedial measures.

“The panel received a total of 86 petitions and 49 were heard on merit while 37 were struck out for various reasons.

“The panel also received 10 petitions which sought the enforcement of judgements of various High Courts of the state against the police for acts of police brutality and extrajudicial killings.

“The panel recommended the payment of compensation to victims and/or their families for various acts of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Delta State.

“The panel also recommended the enforcement of all judgement debts awarded against the police, which they have refused to obey till date.

“The police were meant to protect the rights of citizens and not routinely breach such rights without being held accountable.

“Notwithstanding the proposed special meeting of NEC to be convened as announced by the Vice President,  Prof. Yemi Osinbajo in the month of June to consider the implementation of the reports, including remedies, redress, and compensations, we will continue to hold Governor Ifeanyi Okowa accountable for the implementation of the Delta State’s Judicial Panel of Inquiry Report into complaints of police brutality and extra-judicial killings in the state, submitted to him by the Chairman of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry, Justice Celestina Ogisi (Retd.).”

Nigerian Troops Foil Attempt By ISWAP Terrorists To Attack ‘Repented’ Boko Haram Fighters

File photo used to illustrate story.

The Nigerian Army has repelled an attack by the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) on surrendered Boko Haram members and their families.
This was revealed in a statement released on Sunday and signed by Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, who said the terrorists made a futile attempt to access the facility housing the surrendered Boko Haram members, but retreated when confronted with the superior firepower of Nigerian troops.

File photo used to illustrate story.

Nwachukwu affirmed that the latest strategy is not unconnected with the frustration of the group as top-ranking commanders and members denounce violent agitation to embrace peace in recent times.

“The Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), confronted with the obvious reality of defeat embarked on a  desperate move to undermine the unprecedented depletion in its fighting force, have resorted to attacks on surrendered Boko Haram members and their families.

“This antic of terror within terror is being employed by ISWAP to discourage intending surrendering terrorists in their ranks. The latest strategy is not unconnected with the frustration of the group as top-ranking commanders and members denounce violent agitation to embrace peace in recent times.

“This palpable apprehension might have led ISWAP on Saturday, 2 October 2021 to embark on a mission to annihilate or capture BHTs, who surrendered in Damboa. The gallant troops of 25 Task Force Brigade Operation HADIN KAI whose superior firepower forced the terrorists to withdraw in disarray, ensured Damboa did not fall to their antics.

“The terrorists made futile attempt to access the facility housing the surrendered BHT members, but retreated when confronted with the superior firepower of own troops.”

He reassured the people of Damboa and its environs that the troops would proactively continue to provide security in the areas.

“The Nigerian Army (NA) wishes to reassure the good people of Damboa and environs to go about their normal businesses as vigilant troops would proactively continue to provide security of lives and property.

“The general public are also enjoined to provide actionable and timely information on the activities of these criminal elements and their collaborators.

“The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya, while commending troops for their doggedness, charged them to take the fight to the terrorists’ enclaves to deny them freedom of action. He also reassured them of requisite support as they record more operational gains in Operation HADIN KAI,” he stated.

Nigerian Bar Association, Others Mourn As Renowned Lawyer, Ladi Williams Dies Of COVID-19

Chief Ladi Williams, a legal luminary and first son of late judiciary giant, Chief Rotimi Williams, is dead.

The late lawyer was said to have died around 3am on Sunday at the Saint Nicholas Hospital in Lagos.

One of the sons of the deceased, Kunle Williams, confirmed the passing of the legal luminary on his Facebook page, saying his father died of COVID-19 despite already taking the COVID-19 vaccine.

“My father passed away this morning from COVID-19 despite being double vaccinated Oxford AstraZeneca,” he said.

Williams was 74 years old.

He was called to the Nigerian bar about 48 years ago and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 1995.

He was the principal partner at Chief Ladi Rotimi-Williams Chambers (CLRWC).

His younger brother is Chief Kayode Rotimi-Williams.

“I just lost my elder brother, Chief Ladi Rotimi Williams (aged 74+) to Coronavirus.

“He passed on at 3 am this morning,” he Rotimi-Williams said.

Reacting to the death of the Senior lawyer in a telephone interview with Tribune, The President, Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata described his death as total devastation considering his huge impact on the profession.

Akpata also described his death as a personal loss to him and his family.

He added like him, the late Williams was an alumnus of King’s College, Lagos.

“I am totally devastated by the news. Chief Williams was a big brother and mentor to many of us.

“Apart from that, he was an alumnus of King’s college just like me. It is a personal loss for me and my family.

“He was a great guy. He was a very nice person. As a lawyer, he did very well in his craft.”

“I wish the family of the deceased the fortitude to bear the loss,” Akpata said.

Another lawyer, Wahab Shittu, who also mourned the late icon, said, “Chief Ladi Williams’ death is shockingly unbelievable. We mourn.
Earthly loss, heaven’s gain.
“He was personable, sociable, friendly, nice, and decent. I had very close interaction with the departed silk.
We had mutual respect for one another. He drew me close to him like he did several others. No airs. None at all.
“He was reportedly fully vaccinated, and it is surprising that in spite of the precautions he took, he still died of COVID- 19 complications – an indication that fully vaccinated or not, we remain endangered in these perilous times.
How sad!
“His death undoubtedly is a huge loss to the legal profession and the Nigerian society in general. He will be sorely missed. As he reunites with the saints, my prayer is that his gentle soul finds peaceful repose in paradise. Amen.”

Murder of Pastor Shuaibu: Will Justice Be Served? By Leo Igwe

The murder of a Christian pastor in Kano has raised issues regarding justice, equity, and fairness for non-Muslims in Muslim-dominated Kano state. Muslim bloodletters killed Rev. Shuaibu over his alleged role in the conversion of a Muslim to Christianity in the area. Such horrific acts of religious extremism are not new in Kano state. Kano is one of the Muslim majority states in Northern Nigeria where Sharia law is in force. Islamic theocracy prevails in the region. Kano state officially treats non-Muslims as second-class citizens.
Muslim extremists engage in attacks and killing of non-Muslims with impunity. The federal government authorities turn a blind eye to Muslim faith-based abuses and felonies. The Christian Association of Nigeria has asked that justice be done in the case of the late Pastor Shuaibu. But will justice be done? Will the murderers of this pastor be brought to justice? There have been reports that the police have arrested some suspects. But will they be prosecuted and punished for their crimes? Going by the history of religious bloodletting in the state, justice would not likely be served. It is not in the character of the Islamic Kano state to ensure fairness and equity for non-Muslim believers. Whenever Muslim jihadist go on rampage, attack, or kill non-Muslims, as in the case of Pastor Shuaibu, the Kano state government panders to the Islamic base. State officials look the other way; they pretend not to know their duty and responsibility. The state government plays down on the atrocity. State actors feign ignorance of the law and constitution. In most cases, arrests are not made. Muslim attackers and murderers go scot-free because murdering a non-Muslim is not treated as a criminal act. Killing a non-believer is largely perceived as a religious duty that furthers the cause of Islam and not an offence against the state.

In some cases where the victims survive, they are arrested and detained for their safety. Victims of Islamic mob attacks are prosecuted for engaging in actions capable of breaching public peace. In situations where they did not survive, as in the case of Rev Shuaibu, suspects might be arrested. But they would later be secretly released. As in the case of Bridget Agbahime, whenever alleged perpetrators are charged to court, state prosecutors would at some point declare a nolle prosequi on the case. They would release the bloodletters. This disgusting pattern applies in the handling of jihadist attacks and the killing of non-Muslims in Kano state. Everyone expects the pattern to play out in the case of Rev Shuaibu. Kano state government could also choose to prove the pundits wrong. Now the police have arrested some suspects, will the delay tactics set in? Will the police charge them in court? Will the police keep them in custody until the tension has dissipated and then release them? It is known that state prosecutors sometimes also act as if they were keen at diligently handling the matter. They would charge the case to court and later discontinue the trial or get the judge to throw it out. Would this drama play out in the case of Rev Shuaibu?
Kano state authorities should know that the world is watching and keenly following the case of Rev Shuaibu. The world is taking note of all the mischief, schemes, and intrigues that Islamic theocrats in Kano are using to deny non-Muslims justice.
