E2%80%99-den Family Laments As Ex-Nigerian Senator, Effiong Spends Three Weeks In Kidnappers’ Den

The family of a former senator from Akwa Ibom State, Nelson Effiong, has cried out that the ex-lawmaker is still in the captivity of his abductors, having spent 22 days.
Recall that Effiong, who represented Akwa Ibom South Senatorial district in the 8th National Assembly, was kidnapped on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at about 9pm while relaxing in his lounge in Uyo, the state capital.

It was learnt that the assailants drove into his premises in a Toyota Camry car and shot sporadically into the air, scaring away people before carting the former senator away.
There were rumours earlier in the state that the victim had regained his freedom after his family paid the ransom demanded by the kidnappers.
But a relative of the senator, Uyoh Effiong, in an interview with journalists in Uyo, said his brother was still in the kidnappers’ den, adding people had been calling him to congratulate him over the release of his brother but he insisted that the information is fake.
He said, “They have not released him. He is still there. The news that he has been released is fake. If they had released him, remember I promised that I will inform you about it. So that news is a fake one.
“A lot of people have been calling me, telling me congratulations about his release, but it is not true that he has regained his freedom.
“In fact we have been worried and we are praying that he should be released because it is three weeks and one day today since he was abducted.”
Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macedon, said the command was not aware of any information about his release.
He said “We are not privy to that information. I don’t report on unofficial channels like I keep saying, so I cannot talk about it. For now, the command is not aware”

E2%80%99s-findings-n186million-unpaid-bets-three Lawyer Demands Nigerian Lottery Commission’s Findings On N186million Unpaid Bets To Three Winners

A lawyer, Victor Emerson, has asked the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) to issue its findings on a petition, alleging unpaid sports bet winnings of over N186million.
Emerson said the commission refused to carry out its obligations as a regulatory compliance body set up to protect the interests of all lottery players and winners to ensure they are paid what is due to them.

He had said his clients; Cephas Esemeka, Goodluck Solomon and Uloeze Odum won N186,554,545 after placing bets with BetBonanza but they were not paid.
The lawyer, in another letter dated September 13, said a May 27, 2021 meeting brokered by the commission between his clients and BetBonanza failed to resolve the issue.
He lamented that despite informing the NLRC of the state of affairs via a June 10, 2021 letter, the commission failed to act.
According to him, BetBonanza was not interested in settling the matter amicably. He urged the NLRC to step in and act on his clients’ previous petitions.
“For the records, our petition has been pending before the commission since February and it is regrettable to see that it has not been resolved after seven months by the commission.
“Our clients have become restive and are very distressed by this state of affairs and have instructed us to request that the commission brings our petition to its logical conclusion by issuing its report and recommendations.
“We therefore humbly request that the Commission does the needful and issue its report on our Petition so we can move on in respect of our claim against BetBonanza,” Emerson said.
According to the petitions, Emerson’s clients went to the betting agent in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, to cash out their reward but were informed that BetBonanza withdrew the funds already credited to the agent for their payment.
BetBonanza informed the petitioners that the payments were withdrawn because the games were allegedly fixed, despite the fact that they placed bets on the same games with another company and redeemed their winning.
The online sports betting website, through its lawyers Babajimi Ayorinde and Oladimeji Sarumi, in a March 8 response to the petitioners’ demand letter, said they were not entitled to the winnings.
They alleged that the winners breached BetBonanza terms and conditions, amongst other infractions.

E2%80%93-nigerian-senator If I Open Up On Bandits Attacking Southern Kaduna, Heads Will Roll – Nigerian Senator

The Senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial district, Danjuma La’ah, has revealed reasons he shed tears on different occasions on the floor of Upper Chambers while presenting motions on banditry attacks in his constituency.
The Federal lawmaker stated that some of his senatorial colleagues thought that banditry activities in Southern Kaduna seemed like a Southern Kaduna issue alone.

Speaking on the development in his senatorial district, the La’ah recalled how he told senators that one day, all the 109 Senators would encounter insecurity, in form of bandits, kidnapping insurgency and other forms of criminality, stressing that his words had become realities.
He said, “I have wept times without number, but I knew time shall come and time has come because while I was weeping in the chamber when presenting motions on banditry in Southern Kaduna, I said that one day somehow, that these things will affect every one of us.
“Because we were thinking that it was just meant for Southern Kaduna, but tell me which state in this country has not been affected by bandits?
“Bandits don’t have friends, they don’t know tribes; they don’t know religion. Whoever, you are and they found you, it’s about money.”
The lawmaker said after he presented a motion on insecurity in Southern Kaduna several times, he stopped talking, stating that if he continued based on what he knew, “heads would roll and the world will turn upside down. So, it is better I allow the sleeping dog lies.”
He said banditry activities in Southern Kaduna were not new, while he hoped that in the ongoing clampdown against criminal elements in the north, those who raised and trained bandits should drive them away.
He added, “All these things are not new. Bandits, Boko Haram and insurgents and my motion has all along not been changed from what it is. We can only pray. Those that raised them over there should be the same people that will come and drive them out of this place.”
Asked to speak on Constitution amendment, Senator La’ah disclosed that the Senate leadership intentionally refused him to be a member of the Constitution Review Committee chaired by the Deputy in Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, because they considered him too stubborn to be there.
He said, “I am not a member of the Constitution Review Committee. When the members were sent to the Constitution Review Committee, they didn’t want those of us they consider too stubborn to be there.
“What else will I say? I will not say what I don’t know. It’s good that people accuse me, if they don’t, then I am not a Senator because what affect one Senator affects all.”

E2%80%94-sowore-reacts-after-attending Illiterate Nigerian Policemen Ruin Career Of Solomon Akuma — Sowore Reacts After Attending Trial Of Pharmacist Detained Over ‘Twitter Banter’ On Buhari

Human rights’ activist, Omoyele Sowore, has described the Nigeria Police Force personnel in the trial of Solomon Akuma, a young pharmacist being detained over a Twitter banter on President Muhamamdi Buhari, as illiterates.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Sowore said the police personnel were a mess following the drama that ensued during the court proceeding of the young pharmacist who was detained over joke on Twitter.

According to Sowore, the police lawyer, who appeared in court lacked knowledge of legal matters; secondly, the police filed their address out of time and forgot to seek permission from the court.
He added that the police also violated all the procedures for filing a case.
Sowore added that Akuma’s family had also suffered a huge setback courtesy of the detention of their son.
He said, “At the Federal High Court in Abuja today to attend the farcical trial of Solomon Akuma, a young pharmacist from Abia State arrested and detained since April 2020 at the behest of President Muhammadu Buhari and his late Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari.
“Nigeria Police Force prosecutors claimed Akuma intended to hire Russian Snipers to “kill” Buhari and Abba Kyari because of Twitter banter where he answered to a joke sometime in 2019.
“In court today, where the written addresses of the prosecution and defence were adopted, it was established that the Nigeria Police Force has consistently existed only to please those in power. It was a joke and a mess.
”First, the Police lawyer did not know that only the Attorney General of the Federation can initiate and prosecute Terror suspect as espoused in the “Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2011” specifically its section 19 of the amendment of the Act in 2019.
“Secondly, they filed their address out of time and forgot to seek the permission of the court.
“Third, they did not disclose the location where the offence was committed or the ingredients of the crime as requested by law. Fourthly, the Nigeria Police Force, in the eyes of the law violated all the procedures for filing a case (as typical they never followed any procedures known to law.) In a nutshell, they did not properly file any charges nor disclose any course of infractions before Justice Giwa Badejo who was had been transferred to Enugu but was granted a fiat to return and conclude this inhuman case.
“Their citations were in shambles, Police lawyer didn’t know how to cite the NWLR (Nigeria Law Weekly Reports); he called it “NORL” and when the judge asked what he meant, he said he did not know until he sent a WhatsApp message right there in court and got a reply presumably from his superiors. It was embarrassing.
“But what’s more severely damaging was that a system allowed these functional illiterates to ruin the life and career of a promising Pharmacist at a time the country is dearly in need of medical professionals.
“Also ruined is his family’s life. His father has spent all his savings on this case and fallen ill, he’s down with stroke and today he could not attend the trial, Solomon’s sister has been hospitalised for a week now, chronically ill.
“The Buhari regime is so evil towards Nigerian citizens in every corner either by outright wickedness or deliberate negligence. Lives are being destroyed by the Muhammadu Buhari regime on a minute by minute basis.”
Akuma, 29, was arrested on April 2, 2020, in Aba, Abia State for allegedly making a social media post against the President and his late Chief of Staff, Kyari.
Akuma had spent three months in detention without a court order or trial until he was eventually arraigned for charges bordering on terrorism, sedition, criminal intimidation of the President and threat to the life of Buhari.

‘Pharmacist, Akuma Detained For One Year Because Of Threat To Assassinate Buhari’ —Presidential Aide Justifies Detention

He had been languishing at the Force Criminal Investigation Department before the police lawyer, Victor Ogbudo, filed an application seeking the permission of the court to transfer the young man from the police custody to the correctional centre.
The prosecution counsel claimed that the defendant was flouting the order of the police and that they could not cope with his behaviour in their custody any longer.
The presiding judge, Justice Folashade Giwa-Ogunbajo, later in her ruling dismissed the bail application filed by his lawyer, Emmanuel Ukaegbu and ordered Akuma to be transferred and remanded at the correctional centre.
Activists, lawyers and civil society groups have condemned Akuma’s continued detention and called for his release, saying he did not commit any crime to warrant such a punishment.

E2%80%93-governor-diri Ex-Military Dictator, Abacha Remains Our Hero In Bayelsa – Governor Diri

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has said that former military dictator and infamous ruler, Sani Abacha, remains a hero to the people of the state after he created the oil-rich state 25 years ago on October 1, 1996.
The governor stated this during a thanksgiving service on Nigeria’s 61st independence and Bayelsa 25th anniversary at the King of Glory Chapel in Government House, Yenagoa.

Bayelsa shares boundaries with Rivers and Delta states to the East and West respectively and having Atlantic Ocean to the southern borders.
Its people, basically Ijaw with the minority of Igbo-speaking, were formerly part of the Rivers until the military dictator carved it out in 1996.
Eulogising Abacha, Governor Douye said, “Let me use this medium to thank one man. He may not be popular in Nigeria but to me and all of us Bayelsans; we see him as a great man, a hero. The man who by the stroke of the pen signed the creation of Bayelsa State; I am talking about the late General Sani Abacha.
“We acknowledge him as a state and people. By his singular assent, he created this state with just eight local government areas, which was less than the constitutional requirements.”

E2%80%93-afenifere-challenges-buhari Practise Dialogue That You Preached In UN Assembly – Afenifere Challenges Buhari

Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to put into practice what he said about justice, fairness and dialogue on the floor of the United Nations General Assembly when he addressed the world body last Friday.
Buhari, while calling for the reform of the UN, had said that “without justice, the legitimacy (even efficacy) of our organisation is called to question.”

He had also called for dialogue between Israel and Palestine to resolve their differences adding that the skirmish between the two countries bordered on “the question of justice, fairness and equity”.
Elsewhere in his speech, the Nigerian president also talked about the commitment of his administration to the respect of human rights.
Picking holes in the president’s speech, Afenifere, in a release signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, stated that ethnic nationalities and other concerned stakeholders in Nigeria had been calling for dialogue to resolve “Nigeria’s issues” for long, but the federal government under President Buhari had not only been ignoring them but hounding those calling for such dialogue.
Afenifere said, “It is interesting, perhaps comforting, that the Nigerian authorities realise that dialogue is the way to go in resolving knotty issues. It is however hypocrisy of the highest order for the same authorities to be prescribing this to foreign authorities while describing those calling for the same thing at home as ‘hate speech makers’ and separatists.”
“We, as Afenifere, commend the heroic efforts of the Nigerian Army but it is a fact that the activities of terrorists appear to be more expanding rather than receding going by the submission of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, that over 330,000 Nigerian refugees are languishing in neighbouring countries due to insurgency and armed banditry in the North-East and North-West.
“This is as well as Kaduna State Governor El Rufai that advocated for the military to be decentralised. The level of insecurity in the country has got so bad that the authorities of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) advised youth corps members to always let their people prepare a ransom to be paid in case they are kidnapped in the course of travelling from one point to another while in service.
“We call on the government to immediately allow states to transform their respective security networks into state police with all the powers appertaining thereto.”

Officer Slams N2billion Suit Against Nigerian Army, Bank Over Freezing Of Account

File Photo

A N2billion suit has been slammed against the Nigerian Army and the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) by a Major in the service, Akeem Adeeogba Osenifor.
The Major accused Army and the bank of freezing his bank account and searching his house without a court order.

File Photo

In the suit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the army officer is praying the court to order the two respondents to pay him another sum of N16.6million being the amount allegedly carted away from his private apartment along with other valuable properties.
His counsel, Mike Ozekhome, SAN instituted the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1104/2021, for the enforcement of his fundamental rights to own moveable and immovable property, right to dignity and right to a fair hearing.
The plaintiff also wants the court to order the Nigerian Army to remove the Post No Debit (PND) placed on his account and another order compelling FCMB to tender a public apology to him in at least three national dailies for the blatant violation of his fundamental rights without following the due process of the law.
He applied for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents, their agents, employees, operatives, detectives, servants and privies and investigating officers from further putting his bank on PND without a valid court order.
In the grounds for the application, the plaintiff claimed that on February 23, 2017, one Major General I. M. Obot (Rtd), the Chief of Staff, Army Headquarters Garrison, allegedly informed him of a jailbreak involving one Lance Corporal, Benjamin Collins and that he was instructed along with three others to drill the Corporal and relocate him to another detention facility.
He averred that in obedience to the instruction, he and the other three officers drilled the Corporal and that in the process the Corporal died.
The plaintiff further stated that he was put into military trial and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment which he is still serving while the other three officers who allegedly participated in the drilling of the deceased Corporal were discharged and acquitted.
He averred that in his bid to cater to his family, he raised some cheques for withdrawal through one of his friends and that the cheques were dishonoured on the grounds that the Nigerian Army had allegedly through a letter placed a Post No Debit on his account.
He further contended that he committed no offence known to law to warrant the Nigeria Army placing restrictions on his bank account without any valid court order.
He urged the court to declare that the freezing of his account, searching of his house and his dehumanisation were illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional.

E2%80%94-nigeria%E2%80%99s Kano Government’s Failure To Stop Extremism Led To Mob Killing Of Christian Pastor — Nigeria’s Humanist Association

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State

The Humanist Association of Nigeria has condemned the brutal killing of Reverend Yohanna Shuaibu in Massu, a village in the Sumaila Local Government Area of Kano State.
This was contained in a letter addressed to the Hausa Christian Foundation, Kano, from the Chair Board of Trustees, Humanist Association of Nigeria, Leo Igwe.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State

The association described the murder of the pastor as “another sordid illustration of Islamic extremism, hatred and intolerance in the region.”
It condemned the disposition of the Kano governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to the muslim/non-muslim conflicts in the state, alleging that the government enabled the oppression and persecution of minority religious and belief groups in the state.
The humanist group added that the Kano State Government failed in its duty and responsibility to protect the rights, lives and property of non-muslims including Christians, and humanists.
The group said it would continue to campaign for the equal rights of all Nigerians including their rights to freely express or renounce their faith or belief.
The letter reads, “I am writing to express our deepest sympathies following the brutal murder of Rev. Yohanna Shuaibu by an Islamic mob in Kano. The horrific killing of this Christian pastor is another sordid illustration of Islamic extremism, hatred and intolerance in the region.
“Unfortunately, the Gov. Ganduje-led Islamist government has not helped matters. His government has continued to enable the oppression and persecution with impunity of minority religious and belief groups in the state.
“Kano State Government has expressly failed in its duty and responsibility to protect the rights, lives and property of non-muslims including Christians, and Humanists.
“The government has consistently denied non-Muslims their rights to freedom of religion or belief and freedom of expression. Humanists in Kano and other parts of Nigeria stand with the Hausa Christian Foundation at this difficult moment.
“Humanists will continue to campaign for the equal rights of all Nigerians including their rights to freely express or renounce their faith or belief. Our thoughts are with the family of Rev Shuaibu and other victims of Islamic violence, and religious bloodletting in Kano State.”
SaharaReporters had reported that the Hausa Christian Foundation (HACFO) alleged that a Muslim mob killed a pastor.
In a statement on Sunday, the group also said the mob burnt down the slain pastor’s house, church, and mission school.
The incident reportedly happened when a young Muslim man who converted to Christianity allegedly killed his brother’s wife during a fight and the mob suspected that the pastor had a hand in his alleged conversion.

National Consultative Front Brings Utomi, Jega, Falana, Other Statesmen To Discuss Way Forward For Nigeria On Independence Day

Femi Falana (SAN)

Eminent Nigerians including elder statesmen and technocrats under the aegis of National Consultative Front (NCFront) are planning to converge in the nation’s capital, Abuja on October 1 to hold a National Political Summit.
The conference, which is to commemorate the 61st Independence Anniversary of the country, will also be used for the inauguration of the non-partisan national political coalition for the adoption of electronic transfer of election results for the 2023 general elections.

Femi Falana (SAN)

Among notable Nigerians to speak at the occasion are former Speaker, House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’abba; political economist and former presidential candidate, Prof Pat Utomi; former Secretary to the Government of Kano State, Dr Sule Hamma; Former House of Representatives member, Dr Usman Bugaje; National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party and former minister, Dr Olu Agunloye; and former ambassador of Nigeria, Tokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu.
Also, frontline media mogul, Chief Raymond Dokpesi; human rights’ lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN; human rights’ lawyer and activist, Femi Fálànà, SAN, former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili; foremost constitutional lawyer in the United States, Adewole Adebayo; former presidential candidate, Prof Kingsley Moghalu, former Kaduna senator and rights’ activist, Senator Shehu Sani, among others.
This was contained in a statement issued by the NCFront National Secretariat and signed by its Head, Public Affairs Bureau, Dr Tanko Yunusa obtained by SaharaReporters on Monday.
The event will be co-chaired by Prof Attahiru Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission and Dr Olisa Agbakoba SAN, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, who will both give Opening Remarks at the event.
It will be held under the theme; “Restoring the Credibility of Nigerian Democracy and Legitimacy of the Nigerian State: The Imperative For the adoption of Electronic Transmission of Election Results in Nigeria.”
The statement read, “Universally, election is a major plank of Democracy and if any electoral process is susceptible to rigging and malpractices then such democracy loses its credibility and sanctity.
“It is for this reason that we as leaders of conscience are quite worried that elections in Nigeria have been riddled with malpractices and rigging since the inception of the present civilian rule in Nigeria, thereby making majority of Nigerian citizens to lose faith in the Nigerian democracy as well as the Nigerian State leading to apathy and sabotage.
“The unfortunate flaws and pitfalls of the Nigeria electoral system have greatly eroded the legitimacy of the Nigerian State to the extent that seemingly elected governments are presently contending with different forms of political instability, insecurity and sabotage orchestrated by the governed, having failed to provide good governance and dividends of democracy for the majority of the citizens, owing to crisis of stolen mandate and inept leadership foisted by rigged elections.
“However, our investigations and national consultations have revealed that one major factor and alibi for electoral malpractices and rigging in Nigeria is the manual/physical transfer of election results in Nigeria, which is archaic, problematic and prone to abuse and infractions.
“Consequently, Stakeholders across party divides and sectional lines, including the elections management body, INEC have come to a Consensus that the country is ripe and due for electronic transmission of election results to overcome at least 50% of the basis for electoral malpractices in Nigeria.
“But some powerful lawmakers in the National Assembly and their sponsors, who are the greatest beneficiaries of the current manipulative election results transfer mode, have decided to constitute a barrier to yearnings and aspirations of the majority of Nigerians for the country to adopt electronic transmission of election results for the 2023 elections.
“Other key participants and speakers invited to play key roles in the non-partisan national coalition include, Chief Raph Okey Nwosu, National Chairman, ADC, Barr Dan Nwanyawu, National Chairman, ZLP, Engr Buba Galadima, Expert on Electoral Reforms, Past Ituah Ighodalo, Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed, Spokesperson, Northern Elders Forum, NEF, Amb Nkoyo Toyo, Former Member, House of Reps, Prof Jibo Ibrahim, Civil Society Leader, Mallam Bello Falalu, National Chairman, PRP, Father George Ehusani, Engr Sanni Yabagi, National Chairman, ADP, Dr Osagie Obayuwana, Former Chairman of NCP and Chair, CDHR, Prof Chidi Odinkalu, Former Chair, National Human Rights Commission.
“Alhaji Shettimah Yerima, Leader, Arewa Youths, Comrade Joe Ajaero, Deputy President, NLC, Hadjia Najatu Mohammed, Foremost Woman Activist, Comrade Promise Adewusi, Former Deputy President of NLC, Chief Precious Elekima, Chairman, PLIF, Dr Tanko Yunusa, Former Presidential Candidate, Arc Nyak Etok, Ezekiel, DG, Nigeria First Movement, High Chief Peter Ameh, National Secretary, CUPP and Immediate Erstwhile Chairman of IPAC, Mr Monday Ubani, Chairman, Public Interest Section of NBA, Engr Hon Mrs Janet Adeyemi, Coordinator, Women in Mining, Dr Sadique Gombe of the RNP, Hon Dr Olu Usim Wilson, Women Leader, Dr Sam Amadi, Constitutional Lawyer and Scholar, Leaders of Frontline Civil Society Groups currently working on Electoral Reforms in Nigeria such as YAIGA, CDD, CISLAC, Situation Room, PLAC, TMG, among others.”
