Again, Kano Islamic Police, Hisbah Summon Kannywood Actress Over Social Media Comment

Kano Hisbah corps

The Kano State Hisbah Board, also known as Islamic police has summoned a Kannywood actress, Ummah Shehu, over some allegations she levelled against the Islamic police on social media.
The commandant of the board, Haruna Sani Ibn Sina, said the actress was summoned to prove her claim that the organisation is turning a blind eye to offences committed by its officials while frowning on commoners.

Shehu had made the allegation on social media against the Islamic police following the arrest and subsequent arraignment of Sadiya Haruna, her colleague in the industry.
Hisbah had arrested Haruna for “uploading sexual contents on her social media handles”.
But in an interview with the BBC, Ibn Sina said Shehu must shed light on the allegations she made against Hisbah.
He said if she fails to submit herself and clarify the grey areas, the board will sue her for slandering.
He said, “We’ve not declared her a wanted person; what we’re saying is that she’ll submit herself to us and clarify the allegations she made against us for the general public to know.
“If what she’s said is factual and accurate, it demands further investigation. But if she fails to convince us, we will sue her for libel.”
Hisbah had recently come under intense pressure to act on some pictures of the daughter of the Emir of Bichi who got married to President Muhammadu Buhari’s only son at the weekend.
A video of the wedding party shows Nigerian singer, Mayorkun singing and some of the party attendees spotting Afro, Mohawk or any of the hairstyles Kano State Hisbah has labelled as “unIslamic” and an insult to Islam.
Also, secular songs Hisbah has vehemently frowned upon were played at the party, with young northern men and women dancing to them.
All these have attracted punishments from Kano Hisbah, in cases where poor Nigerians were involved.
Noting the hypocrisy exhibited by the Islamic police, which were nowhere to be found during the wedding, human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore had said, “Yusuf Buhari’s wedding and the Kano Hisbah that shaves the head of poor people but was nowhere to be found around the highly secular Muhammadu Buhari son’s wedding: One country, two laws -One is applicable to the poor and the other is applicable to rich and highly connected. Who says poverty is not a CRIME? #RevolutionNow #BuhariMustGo.”
Ironically, Hisbah has been notorious for shaving the heads of poor northerners with Afro, Mohawk and other hairstyles termed as “unIslamic” by the bias Islamic police.
Similarly, in February, a barber from Benue State, Elijah Ode, was arrested by Kano Hisbah in the Sabongari area of the state for giving his customers haircuts said to have offended the Islamic faith.
Two of Ode’s customers were also tortured for having such “offensive” haircuts.
The religious police force reportedly arraigned Ode and had him remanded.
Recently, after it was knocked by the public for being silent on the photographs of the bridal shower of Buhari’s daughter-in-law, Hisbah responded by prohibiting the sharing of the bridal shower photographs.
SaharaReporters had reported that some Nigerians highlighted Zahra’s gown, part of which is made from a transparent material, while others pointed out that she did not have her hair covered as is usually done by Muslim women.
The Islamic police described sharing of the photos online by Muslims as a sin.
Meanwhile, the Islamic police have since banned stylish haircuts, sagging of trousers and playing of music at social events by disk jockeys.
Hisbah also banned commercial motorcycles and tricycle riders from carrying two women at a time.
Of recent, the Kano State Hisbah Board banned the use of mannequins to display clothes by tailors, supermarkets and boutique owners in the state.
Sani Ibn Sina, had said the use of mannequins by tailors, boutique owners and others contravenes the provision of Islamic injunctions.
He added that the agency would educate offenders on how Islam frowns on the use of mannequins and send its officials to apprehend and prosecute them.

12-year-old Boy Found Eating Own Faeces After Being Chained, Starved By Mother In Kano

A 12-year-old boy was found in Kano by one Ibrahim Danladi Satatima eating his own faeces after allegedly being confined in a room and starved by his mother, identified as Maryam Dauda.
Dauda has been arrested by the police in Kano, who learnt about the abuse through Satatima.

The police the boy was in chains and confined in the family’s rented apartment at Unguwar Liman Dorayi in the Gwale Local Government Area of the state without proper feeding and health care.
Satatima, who was interested in buying the house and was assessing its condition, told Daily Trust he met the boy inside the room, where he was chained and eating his own faeces.
“As I entered the house alongside the landlord, I saw a boy chained inside a room eating his faeces,” he said.
He said he sought assistance from the neighbours to rescue the boy but they were not cooperative.
“So I went to see the ward head but I could not see him as he was not around at that moment. We waited for an hour or so but he did not appear. I called him on phone but his line did not go through. So I decided to report the case to Dorayi police station and they promptly responded,” he added.
Spokesperson for Kano State Police Command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed that the woman is in their custody and will be arraigned as soon as an ongoing investigation is concluded.
He added that the victim was rescued and rushed to Murtala Muhammad Hospital for medical attention.
Dauda, however, blamed her action on poverty, saying since she had had no help since she had the boy.
She said her son has suffered from mental illness all his life.
“He is not the only one, even his two brothers suffered from the same illness before they passed away,” she said.

According to her, Mimi called a relation of his to inform him there was trouble when he got to a village close to Jos, the Plataeau State capital. Kate Patrick said the relative did not hear Mimi clearly and tried to call him back, but his phone line was switched off.”It was last Sunday. You know what happened in Jos. He called my aunty, that he was going to Bauchi and on getting to Jos Road, it appeared something happened to him.”We didn’t know when he left, but we talked before he travelled. But, we also talked on the phone when he was about to enter Jos. He told us that he was in a particular community, he wanted to tell us something like he was in trouble. His number was switched off immediately and that was all. “He did not get to that Jos, he didn’t get to Bauchi and we didn’t see him in Abuja. His phone line has been switched off since then. We could not reach him. We have been calling people to know if they helped us see him,” Kate Patrick lamented.Mrs Patrick revealed that her brother is from Donga Local Government Area in Taraba state. She said he might have been a victim of the recent Plateau violence, but begged the media and security agents to help her get to the root of what happened. “We reported the case with security people at Jos. According to people, the particular village where the trouble occurred is dominated by Muslims. “We heard that they blocked that particular community that day. E2%80%99s-most-incompetent-commander-chief-armed-forces-buhari-can%E2%80%99t-defend-future World’s Most Incompetent Commander-In-Chief Of Armed Forces, Buhari Can’t Defend Future Commanders – Activist, Sowore

Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has described Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari as the most incompetent commander-in-chief of any armed forces in the world.Sowore noted this on Tuesday against a backdrop of an attack by bandits on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Afaka in Kaduna State earlier in the day.

The gunmen invaded the Afaka barracks of the academy around 1am, killing two soldiers identified as Lieutenant Commodore Wulah and Flight Lieutenant Okoronwo, and abducting Major Stephen Dantong.A source later told SaharaReporters that the kidnappers had contacted the military authorities to demand a ransom of N200 million.“They contacted ACA, which is what we call NDA to demand N200 million ransom for the officer,” an officer told SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity. One of the officers who was injured in the attack is currently being treated at a hospital within the barracks.Tweeting on Tuesday, Sowore said, “Muhammadu Buhari is the most incompetent commander-in-chief of any ‘armed force’ in the whole wide world. This fumbler can’t even defend his future commanders! #RevolutionNow #BuhariMustgo.”The latest attack is just one of the many attacks by terrorists and bandits on civilians and military facilities in the country. For instance, on February 19, 2018, about 113 schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists at a government girls secondary school in Dapchi, Yobe State. Most of the girls were later released while a few died. One of them, Leah Sharibu, is still a captive after refusing to renounce her faith. On December 11, 2020, some gunmen attacked the Government Boys Science Secondary School in the Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State and abducted 344 students. Though all the boys were released about a week after the abduction, it still portrayed the government as not being in firm control of security in the country. Less than a week after the Kankara schoolboys were released, at least 80 pupils were kidnapped at an Islamic school in Mahuta, Katsina State. The students were released after negotiations with their abductors. On February 17, 2021, some bandits abducted 27 students at a government science college, Kagara, Niger State. The students were later released after negotiations. Later that month, bandits kidnapped 317 female students of Government Girls Secondary School Jangebe, Zamfara State. One of the students died while the rest were later released after negotiations. On March 12, 2021, some gunmen abducted 27 students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna State. The students were released nearly two months after their abduction. In June 2021, bandits kidnapped eight students and some lecturers at Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria, Kaduna State.

One of the officers who was injured in the attack is currently being treated at a hospital within the barracks.
However, sources told TheCable the bandits sneaked in through a part of the facility that had no fence.
Another source said “it was in the middle of the night, and the personnel that were meant to be monitoring the CCTV had slept off.”
“They could have put everyone on alert, and avert the attack.”
The newspaper learnt the academy authorities would court-martial some soldiers for failing to secure the area.
Bashir Muhd Jajira, spokesperson for the academy, in a statement said, “The security architecture of the Nigerian Defence Academy was compromised early this morning by unknown gunmen who gained access into the residential area within the Academy in Afaka. During the unfortunate incident, we lost two personnel and one was abducted.
“The Academy in collaboration with the 1Division Nigerian Army and Air Training Command as well as other security agencies in Kaduna state has since commenced pursuit of the unknown gunmen within the general area with a view to tracking them and rescue the abducted personnel.

E2%80%99-surrender%E2%80%93borno Though Boko Haram Attacked Me Over 50 Times, We Should Accept The Terrorists’ Surrender–Borno Governor

Babagana Zulum, Borno governor, has said he has been attacked by Boko Haram insurgents “more than 40 to 50 times”.
Speaking on Tuesday while briefing state house correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Zulum said over 100,000 people have been killed in the 12-year-old insurgency in the north-east.

The governor said about 2,600 insurgents have surrendered and are now in custody, adding that not all of them are criminals.
He added that no law prescribes the killing of surrendered insurgents, saying that they would be trained for the purpose of reintegration.
Zulum said many of those who surrendered are women and children who were forced to join the insurgents and trained to handle AK-47 rifles.
“I came to brief Mr. President over the ongoing surrender by insurgents. I think, to me, and to the greater majority of people of Borno state, this is a very good development,” Zulum said.
“In the last 12 years, thousands of lives were lost; people have completely lost their means of livelihood. We have a total number of over 50,000 orphans and widows; these are official figures. The unofficial figures are more than this, and we were able to cultivate not more than three percent of our total arable land because of the insurgency and right now, the whereabouts of not less than 10 percent of people of Borno state are not known to all of us at all.
“This is a very serious matter and I think the report of the surrendering of the insurgents, to me in particular and to the greater people of Borno state, is a very welcome development. Unless we want to continue with an endless war, I see no reason why we shall reject those that are willing to surrender.
“I’ve been in this. For the last 11 or 12 years, I was attacked for more than 40 to 50 times. I know the magnitude of this problem. More than 100,000 people were killed, I’m telling you. Therefore, I’m in total support of this ongoing surrender by the insurgents, we support them and those who have surrendered shall be dealt with according to the extant rules and regulations.
“But mind you, among those that have surrendered, some are innocent. They were forcefully conscripted into this programme. Some are teenagers, below the ages of 11, 12, who can handle AK-47 and there’s one very important thing that Nigerians need to understand; if this issue of Boko Haram insurgency is not resolved, I believe it will never end because it is a generation.”

E2%80%94-education-rights-campaign Lagos University Guilty Of Killing Student Activist, Omomeewa — Education Rights Campaign

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has said the management of Lagos State University has a case to answer as it alleged that the school persecuted Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, aka Omomeewa to death.
This was made known in a statement issued by the group’s National Coordinator, Hassan Soweto and the Acting National Mobilisation Officer, Adaramoye Lenin on Tuesday.

Omomeewa was shot dead last Wednesday, near the gate of the school by unknown gunmen hours after appearing before the school’s disciplinary committee over alleged admission racketeering and unlawful possession of university documents.
The ERC noted that Omomeewa would not have been at the place he met his untimely death were it not for the invitation by the disciplinary panel.
The ERC also questioned the unavailability of security men at the spot where Omomeewa was killed, stating that the venue of the incident was just a few metres from the school gate which always has, at least 3 or 4 campus’ marshals often armed with guns.

How Students’ Leader, Nurudeen Was Shot Dead By Suspected Robbers – Lagos State University

The group also highlighted several inconsistencies in the accounts given by the police, the institution’s security unit and management, hence called for an independent and democratic probe to unravel the truth.
Omomeewa, according to the statement, completed his studies in the last academic session but was not issued his certificate over alleged admission racketeering, which it said is connected to the deceased’s opposition to anti-students and anti-workers’ policies introduced by the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adigun Olanrewaju Fagbohun.
“Such policies included an increase in acceptance charges from N10,000 to N20,000, introduction of a dubious medical fee of N10,000, harassment of students by campus marshals trying to enforce the dress code, increment of fees from N25,000 per session which was a product of tumultuous struggle in 2014 to N150,000 for stream 2 students.
“The Prof. Fagbohun-led administration was able to impose this dubious and anti-poor policy by balkanizing the admission into stream 1 and stream 2 whereby stream 1 pays about N54,000 while stream 2 pays N150,000 even though both group of students use the same facilities and are taught by the same staff.
“But perhaps the major crime of Omomeewa and for which he became a target for victimisation was his solidarity and that of the ERC for the leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU) who were sacked by the Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun administration for challenging the Vice Chancellor’s qualification for his position and for opposing his anti-worker and tyrannical policies.
“Angry and vengeful, the management first showed a taste of how far it was ready to go in punishing Omomeewa when in February 2019 it moved might and main to ensure he never emerged as President of the Students Union even though he won the most votes.
“Thereafter in October 2019, the management using the Department of State Services (DSS) planted evidence on him in order to ensnare him in a phantom case of admission racketeering. Since 2019 when the panel has been sitting perfunctorily, it has failed to call any witnesses including those who planted the evidence on Omomeewa despite the fact that he had gone to great lengths to furnish the panel and SIEU with their particulars. The panel actually had no plan to prove a case of admission racketeering because there was simply nothing to be proved. Rather, the case of admission racketeering was simply a gimmick to hold on to Omomeewa’s certificate for as long as it would take.
“This is why we say that the invitation of Omomeewa by the Management of the Lagos State University (LASU) to appear before the panel the day he was killed raises a whole lot of suspicion and therefore must not be overlooked by the Police. This is especially as it turned out that his appearance before the panel on this day was just a waste of his time.
“For instance, the panel could not produce documents he had submitted to it months before. Rather the panel expected him to have brought copies of these same documents and since he did not, they simply asked him to come back in the next two weeks. This kind of time-wasting and delays were the reasons the panel dragged since 2019 and in the context of his brutal murder, they raise so many questions which only an independent and democratic probe can unravel.
“For us in the ERC, we are strongly of the opinion that the Lagos State University (LASU) management persecuted Omomeewa to death and are in that respect culpable and guilty.”
The group warned that it will hold the Nigerian Police Force, especially the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, responsible should the case be swept under the carpet.
It further requested that the murder case be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID), Panti for the commencement of proper investigation.
The ERC called for the arrest and prosecution of the killers of Omomeewa while asking that the autopsy be immediately conducted in order to satisfy the wishes of the family who want to commit the deceased to earth in order for healing to commence.
The body also called for the setting up of a democratically constituted security committee comprising elected representatives of LASUSU, staff unions, SEIU, the Nigeria Police and communities which will work out a common strategy to keep the campus and its vicinity safe for students and staff.
It added: “Withdrawal of the false charges of admission racketeering levelled against Omomeewa, posthumous release of his certificate and payment of adequate compensation by the management of LASU to the wife and four-month-old child he left behind.
“An end to tyranny and victimization in LASU. Omomeewa was persecuted by LASU management. In his memory and honour, we demand the recall of all politically expelled, suspended and sacked students and staff activists in LASU and a halt to attacks on democratic rights.
“Reversal of all anti-poor and anti-student policies in LASU. We say no to N150,000 tuition for stream 2 admission students. We demand a reversal to N25,000 for all students and improved funding of LASU and its democratic management.”

Former Chad President Jailed For War Crimes, Habre Killed By COVID-19

Hissene Habre, the former strongman president of Chad and security ally of the West during the Cold War who was later jailed for war crimes, died on Tuesday in Senegal at the age of 79, Senegal’s justice minister said.
According to Reuters, Habre contracted COVID-19 at a clinic in the capital Dakar where he was taken 10 days ago from jail for medical reasons, Justice Minister Malick Sall, told Reuters. When his condition worsened, he was taken to Principal Hospital, where he died.

Habre’s 1982-90 rule, which began with a coup, saw widespread killings by his infamous political police who rounded up suspects and held them in secret detention centres. In eight years, tens of thousands were raped, tortured and killed.
After a landmark trial in Senegal, where he fled after being chased out of office by Sudan-based forces, Habre was sentenced to life in prison in 2016 for rape and ordering the killing and torture of thousands of political opponents.
The verdict was seen by rights groups as a watershed moment in African justice: it marked the first time in modern history that one country’s domestic courts have prosecuted the former leader of another country for crimes against humanity.
It also capped a 16-year battle by victims and rights campaigners to bring the former Chadian autocrat to justice.
“Hissene Habre will go down in history as one of the world’s most pitiless dictators,” said Reed Brody of the International Commission of Jurists, who has worked with Habre’s victims since 1999.
“(He was) a man who slaughtered his own people, burned down entire villages, sent women to serve as sexual slaves for his troops and built clandestine dungeons to inflict medieval torture on his enemies.”
Habre denied his role in the killings and remained defiant. At the start of his trial in 2015, he had to be carried into court in his long white robes, and restrained by masked security guards. He shouted “Shut up! Shut up!” when the clerk read out his indictment.
The United States and France supported Habre during his rule over the desert nation in central Africa, fearful of the expansionist designs of neighbouring Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi, whose troops occupied an area of northern Chad.
That support waned as Habre faced growing resistance from armed groups, including his eventual successor Idriss Deby, who attacked from neighbouring Sudan.

E2%80%9Cordinary-street-bandits%E2%80%9D-%E2%80%93 Highly Reputed Nigerian Defence Academy Attacked, Outwitted By “Ordinary Street Bandits” – Northern Group

Foremost pro-northern group, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has condemned Tuesday’s bandit attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and the handling of security by the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
Gunmen had invaded the Afaka barracks of the academy around 1 am, killing two soldiers identified as Lieutenant Commodore Wulah and Flight Lieutenant Okoronwo.

They also abducted Major Stephen Dantong and have demanded a ransom of N200 million.
One of the officers who was injured in the attack is currently being treated at a hospital within the barracks.
But a statement issued by the spokesman for ACF, Emmanuel Yawe, described it as a shame that “ordinary street bandits” could have carried out such an attack on the military school.

It said, “These gallant men have paid the supreme price for Nigeria, their motherland.

“It is really sad that ordinary street bandits will invade a military institution of such high national and international repute, outwit the security system and men there, kill officers and take one away to an unknown destination.
“The NDA is a proud reminder of the achievements of our fathers. We of the ACF have said it again and again that there is everything seriously wrong with the management of our security. The other day a Nigerian Air Force fighter aircraft was shot down by the so-called bandits.

Drivers Protest In Abuja, Blame Uber, Bolt For Death Of Colleagues

Dozens of Uber and Bolt drivers on Tuesday in Abuja staged a peaceful protest against their service providers over the death of their colleagues while on duty.
The protesting drivers blamed the ride-sharing companies for the death of their colleagues and called for proper profiling of their riders to guarantee their (drivers’) safety in the course of their duty. They said the current customer profiling method used by Uber and Bolt endanger their lives.

The protest paralysed activities of Uber and Bolt in the nation’s capital as the angry drivers withdrew their vehicles from the road to join the rally.
The Deputy Coordinator Administration National Coalition of Ride Sharing Partners (NARCORP), Fred Aleburu called on government authorities to come to their aid by invoking relevant laws to regulate the activities and operations of the ride-hailing companies.
He also demanded justice for the families of their colleagues who lost their lives as result of negligence and inaction of the companies to profile riders.

He wondered why service providers are only interested in profiling their drivers and reluctant to request for the valid means of identification of their customers.
Aleburu said, “We are mourning our colleagues who were killed by Bolt and Uber. They were killed because Uber and Bolt have not profiled their riders. They endangered the lives of drivers and our members have been dying and that is why I said they were killed by Bolt and Uber.
“We are crying to the world that they should help us tell Bolt and Uber to profile their customers for our safety.
“They should request for their valid identity card like international passport, National Identification Number (NIN), driver’s license and voter card. They should have it in their data base so that anytime a crime is committed, you will know who perpetrated the act.
“If anybody wants to download the Bolt or Uber app, you just need to enter either your driver’s license details or any other legal or valid means of identification so that if anything untoward happens, you can be traced.”
He said all drivers’ associations operating under any ride-hailing company across the country were part of the ongoing three-day warning strike embarked upon by the coalition.
He added that they would submit a letter to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige to formally apply for registration of the coalition.
Many residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were stranded as a result of the strike action.
