Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has described as “heartbreaking”, the death of elder statesman Ahmed Joda, who died on Friday at the age of 91.
In a statement on Friday signed by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo said the late Joda was his friend for about 60 years.

The ex-President explained that the late former Federal Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information saved the unity of Nigeria shortly after the 1966 coup d’état when others insisted that Nigeria should collapse.
Obasanjo described Joda “as not just a Nigerian, but, a true and great Nigerian, committed to unity, development and progress of the country”.
“Oh! What a heartbreaking news, that my friend for well over 60 years has passed to the great beyond. If every Nigerian have the attributes of Joda, Nigeria will have been better than what it is now.
“Ahmed Joda by his feature did not need to tell you is a Fulani man, but, in everything I know he did, he lived not just as a Fulani man, he lived, he worked and he laboured as a true Nigerian. They are not many like him, and that was what strengthens our relationship since 1959,” Obasanjo was quoted to have said.

Obasanjo recalled that the effort of Joda and his other Super Permanent Secretaries as they were fondly called in the then civil service saved Nigeria in 1966.
According to the former President, “I know that if not for people like Joda and other Senior Permanent Secretaries as they were called Super Permanent Secretary as at that time, after the second upheaval of 1966, after the first upheaval we would have had Nigeria broken into pieces. Because Araba was bent on having Nigeria divided.

Police Arrest Edo Kidnap Kingpin After Three-hour Gun Battle
The suspect
Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested one Glory Ikponmwosa aka Shina Rambo, who is allegedly notorious for land grabbing, kidnapping among other crimes in the state.
SaharaReporters learnt that the suspect allegedly engaged the officers in a three-hour gun battle before he was eventually subdued by the officers.

Ikponmwosa was also said to have challenged the state government for signing the Edo State Private Property Protection law 2021, which abolished Okahele, a violent group he created.
He was also alleged to be involved in serial assassinations, sponsorship of violence in communities, kidnapping, stockpiling of arms among others.
A source said, ”One Glory Ikponmwosa a.k.a Shina Rambo was arrested around 2am on Thursday by a combined team of police officers from the Force Intelligence Bureau, Abuja. Before his eventual arrest, he had engaged the police in a serious gun duel that lasted for over three hours.
“Items recovered from the suspect include ammunition, bullets and cartridges. Reliable information reveals that he was arrested for alleged serial assassinations, sponsorship of violence in communities, kidnapping, stockpiling of arms (including sophisticated weapons like Ak-47) etc.
“The said Glory Ikponmwosa was also the head of the association of Okahele in Edo state, a violent group he created after the abolition of community development association in Edo State. Of recent, the said Glory Ikponmwosa has also led and sponsored a futile protest to the Palace of the revered Oba of Benin, against the Edo state government for signing into law the Edo State Private Property Protection law 2021, which abolished the group known as Okahele.
“Several petitions are bothering on criminality spread across various police divisions in Edo state against him but he has always evaded arrest. The numerous victims of his reign of terror are crying to the Inspector-General of Police for justice as the said suspect has boasted openly that he has some policemen in his payroll.”

Five Children Die In Borno While Playing With Disused Grenade
Five children were killed on Thursday while playing with a disused grenade outside Ngala community in Borno State, a town that shares the border with Cameroon.
This was confirmed by some militiamen on Friday, AFP reports.
Anti-jihadist militiaman Umar Kachalla said, “The five children picked up the explosive while herding in a field outside the town, it exploded in their hands as they were playing with it.
“Two of them died on the spot while the other three died in hospital in Mada, inside Cameroon.”
Another militiaman, Umar Ari, gave a similar account of the incident.
In August 2014, the Boko Haram terrorist group raided Ngala along with the nearby trading hub of Gamboru.
The two towns were recaptured in September 2015 by Nigerian troops with the help of Chadian forces following a months-long offensive.
Ari said unexploded mines and grenades from the conflict still litter the surrounding countryside and many children had been killed or injured.
In December 2019, nine people were killed and 26 injured when an explosive device went off on a crowded bridge linking Gamboru and Fotokol.
Residents blamed the explosion on a grenade disguised as a toy that, they said, had been given to some children as a gift by a Boko Haram insurgent.

A Youtuber, Israel Balogun, who later exposed the money miracle ‘session’ was arrested by the police.
Barrister Ugbabor Ibomor, a member of the legal team of Apostle Suleman, had justified the arrest of Israel Balogun, a YouTuber who exposed a money miracle scam by Suleman.
In a recent statement, Suleman’s lawyer, Ibomor explained that the YouTuber’s arrest was not in connection to the money miracle scam but for defamation of character and cyberbullying against the person of Apostle Suleman.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume, has said he does not agree that the surrendered Boko Haram terrorists should be given blanket amnesty or pampered by the Nigerian Army.
Ndume representing Borno South Senatorial District said the repentant terrorists should not receive a pat on the back.

A few days ago, the Nigerian Army released a statement, saying the recent offensive operations by troops of Operation Hadin Kai led the Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West Africa Province terrorists in the North-East to surrender en masse, a report which stirred various reactions as to what became of the “repentant” terrorists.
Senator Ndume said he was not surprised at the development due to the hostile environment the troops had created for the terrorists.
“It didn’t come to me as a surprise actually, because I’ve been saying for a long time that the armed forces and other security agencies of the country are handicapped. Otherwise, they have the capacity and the ability to prosecute this war.
“Now that what they need is given to them, you can see the results within this short time. And I’m expecting more.
“It is only that, as I have said before, there shouldn’t be blanket amnesty and pampering treatment to those who have surrendered,” Ndume said.
According to him, what needs to be done now is to ensure that the seemingly apologetic insurgents are carefully profiled without any rush to have them return to their communities.
The federal lawmaker was of the opinion that the army should be more focused on ensuring that the Boko Haram war was brought to an end even faster than it had been projected in various quarters.
The lawmaker expressed confidence in the new leadership of the armed forces, establishing that the well-coordinated inter-agency cooperation between the country’s security agencies would yield favourable results for all.
“I think it is a welcome development and I have confidence that more is to be seen with the new leadership and the new cooperation,” he said.

Experts say persistent outbreak of cholera in Bauchi State is caused by poor urban planning and regulatory failures. WikkiTimes’ Rauf Oyewole reports that due to indiscriminate refuse dumps, stinky abattoirs and unclean sources of water, the state government has endangered the lives of residents by failing on its basic responsibilities.
When 51-year-old Sa’adatu Abdullahi was rushed to Misau General Hospital earlier this month, her sister Jamila Abdullahi accompanied her to the cholera ward with a sample of their well water in a 4-litre gallon. Sa’adatu looked pale and could not speak coherently.
A commercial vehicle from Gwaram village in Misau, about 89km away, had brought her to the hospital where three of her neighbours had also been sickened by cholera. “I feel so empty. I can’t stand on my feet and my stomach is hurting, ” she told WikiTimes.
“Her stool has changed to something like water from boiled rice,” a doctor who has been treating her said under the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press.
Sa’adatu was lying down in a makeshift hospital bed, clutching her abdomen in a gesture to stop her severe vomiting and diarrhoea. The hospital had removed the mattresses from the beds to give way to her stool and that of other patients, placing a bucket under each bed.
The doctor explained to WikiTimes that the measures would prevent the mattresses from harbouring the bacteria that sickened Sa’adatu and others.
The hospital is grappling with the latest wave of cholera outbreak in the state that have sickened thousands of people and killed several people, a disease whose occurrence is associated with contaminated and infected water supplies. The frequent outbreak of cholera in the state has drawn attention to the failure of the state government to safeguard the lives of the residents, negligence that has been costing lives over the years.
At Trauma Section of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, the state capital, Khadija Umar, a nursing mother had suffered diarrhoea for more than a week before her husband brought her to the hospital.
“While I was at the Primary Health Centre, Federal Low Cost, the nurses were just administering drips on me without knowing or bothered to ask about my underlying condition,” Umar said. “This exacerbated my condition. I thought I would die because my BP was so high that the doctors were giving me much attention. I was not part of those taken to the cholera camp. I think it was because of my condition.”
The cholera outbreak has not also spared young people in the state. Eighteen-year-old Sale said he had spent one week in isolation while receiving treatment at Bauchi Specialist Hospital. “It was a terrible experience,” he said. “I was about vomiting everything in me.”
Outbreak overwhelms health facilities
Several health facilities visited by WikkiTimes in Bauchi State had been overwhelmed by the cholera outbreak. In Dass Local Government, for instance, cholera patients were being treated under the trees located in the hospital premises.
“We cannot accommodate the influx of patients as a result of the outbreak”, said Amina Umar, a health worker.

The situation was the same in Bayara General Hospital where the female ward was filled with patients, forcing Maimuna Ibrahim to lie on a wooden bench outside. “I had to lie here because there is no space inside,” Ibrahim said. “The situation had turned into a pandemic of some sort.”
In Misau, the chief medical director at Misau General Hospital, Dr Mohammed Sani, said this year’s outbreak has overstretched the services of the hospital. “Many of our doctors and other personnel were made to work overtime to treat the increasing number of patients. Some of them could not go home to celebrate Eid-il Kabir.”
Bauchi, like many other states in Nigeria, especially in the North, has been experiencing seasonal outbreaks of cholera. Many residents of the state have died of this preventable disease while thousands of them have had a near-death experience.
Cholera remains a global threat to public health and an indicator of inequity and lack of social development, according to World Health Organisation. The UN health agency estimates that about 4 million cases are reported every year while 21,000 to about 143,000 deaths are recorded annually globally.
WikkiTimes’ findings in Bauchi has shown that poverty and poor access to water, as well as negligence by the government, has worsened the outbreak over the years.
In 2014, about 16,923 people had cholera in the state while 143 died across the 20 local government areas in the state, according to WaterAid Nigeria. Over 87 per cent of the cases were recorded in the state capital. In the following three years after 2014, the state did not record an outbreak of cholera.
But in 2018, Bauchi had 9,725 cases of cholera with 28 deaths. Children under the age of five years made up about half of the victims, according to WaterAid Nigeria.
A coalition of civil society organisations in the state blamed current outbreaks of cholera for “indiscriminate disposal of waste (solid and liquid), inadequate clean water supply within Bauchi metropolis and its environs, and poor hygiene practices.”
So far in the latest outbreak, about 2,874 residents have been hospitalised while 42 persons had died of cholera between May and August, according to Rilwanu Mohammed, the executive chairman of Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency.
About 80 percent of the cases had occurred at Bauchi Local Government Area which covers the state capital. Toro Local Government Area is another hotspot with 212 cases while Dass and Tafawa Balewa local government areas recorded about 100 cases each in June 2021.
Repeated efforts by WikkiTimes to get officials of either the Bauchi State Ministry of Health or the State’s Primary Health Care Development Agency to comment on its findings was unsuccessful.
The permanent secretary of the Ministry, Dr Dayyabu Mohammed said it was only members of the committee responsible for the disease that was allowed to comment on the issue. “There is a committee that is doing that every day,” he said. “I know that our director Disease Control, Madam Lois is there and Gandi is the State Epidemiologist. Go and meet them, they will give you what they have been doing. I’m not part of them.”
Then the state’s epidemiologist said only the director of Disease Control could permit him to speak. But the director instead directed the reporter to the executive chairman of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed. Again, Dr Mohammed declined to comment, saying he was directed not to speak on the issue.
Bauchi’s stinky abattoir and unprotected meat is cholera breeding ground
WikkiTimes’ findings show that there are many cholera breeding grounds in Bauchi State, particularly in the metropolitan where the largest chunk of the cases had been recorded. The meat vendors at Bauchi stinky abattoirs do not cover the meat against flies, for example.
“I have been selling meat in this Wunti market for about 12 years; this is how we do it,” said Sai’d Auwal, a meat vendor who was chasing flies away from his meat. “We don’t want the meat covered because of our customers; it is for them to see that we have meat.”
Cows are slaughtered under a big shade with a corrugated roof. The facility is surrounded by stinky cow-dungs deposited there for weeks. Although there was a clean source of water from an overhead tank, the polluted environment exposes buyers to disease-causing bacteria.
The process of treatment and transporting to other vendors within the metropolis is an eyesore. Meats are conveyed to the two main markets – Muda Lawal and Wunti in open vans, tricycles, and bicycles. These unhygienic practices, according to public health and environmental experts, are some of the causes of cholera outbreaks.
Heaps dump and poor urban planning threaten residents
Littered waste across strategic locations and disjointed residential areas that defy proper urban planning amid population outburst in the ancient city and its environs have made it easy for cholera to hit hard, according to Dr Abubakar Suleiman, an environmental expert.
WikkiTimes’ checks around the metropolis showed heaps of refuse at different junctions and compounds. School-age children were seen scavenging at a dumpsite beside Doya Primary Health Care Centre, along Gombe road. Also, many houses in the capital are built against state urban development plans.
At Yakubu Wanka area, along Gombe road, most of the slums on the hilltop have no proper waste management system. Over 90 per cent of the houses in the neighbourhood release their wastewater to flow down the hill, causing further contamination and health risks linked to the cholera outbreaks.
“We that are down here under the hill suffer the waste from those on the top,” said Ibrahim Umar, a resident of the area. “Their smelly water and toilet waste sometimes flow down here. We don’t have well water and there is no government-provided water source on our side here. I think it is because of the topography of our houses. The water pressure is not strong enough to push the water to climb up.”
An environmental expert at the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Dr Abubakar Sulaiman said that the government’s failure to enforce the laws has worsened the indiscriminate disposal of waste in the state. “How can a government employ staff to regulate abattoir for instance and those who are responsible to do checks at the facility have left the job undone and you keep paying them,” he said.
“In a standard abattoir, there should be health experts, veterinary doctors, environmental officials who must certify the health of the animals and that of the butchers. This is not obtainable in our abattoir. And sadly, someone is being paid for this job.”
He continued: “Another major issue is that the people who are paying taxes have not been holding these government officials accountable for their responsibilities. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that waste is properly managed.”
He added that it is “so sad that are still dying of these preventable diseases. People build wells very close to their sewage. This is against the standard of six meters of space. They dump refuse indiscriminately. This is where all the contributing factors grow. Many of the residents do not know how to prevent the disease.”
Well water not safe for consumption
In a 2018 report by WaterAid, 65 percent of Bauchi State residents do not have access to clean water. WikkiTimes’ findings across the state capital showed that the majority of residents in Bauchi metropolis rely on wells as sources of water. Experts said well water is not considered a good source of water. Comrade Umar Sabo, assistant director of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene at the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) said that “generally we don’t consider well water as a good source of water.”
He added that “We don’t go for testing of such a source unless it is on-demand (by the private owners). No matter how the construction is made and the cover. We only conduct testing on hand pumps and other sources of water.”
Experts believe that drinking well water which they said houses microorganisms, can cause diarrhoea, dysentery, salmonellosis, hepatitis, and guardians. Infants, children, elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to get sick or die from disease-causing microorganisms in drinking water.
Although the state’s multi-million-dollar World Bank-assisted urban water project is providing clean water to some areas within the metropolitan areas, challenges of occasional water treatment and breakdown issues leave residents days without water.
According to Mr Kolawole Banwo, head of advocacy, policy, and communications at WaterAid Nigeria, poor sanitation and hygiene practices contribute to cholera spread. “It usually breaks out in the onset through the peak of the rainy season when water sources get contaminated,” he said.
“Where there is open defecation and poor management of faecal waste from poor toilet facilities and poor hygiene such as handwashing with soap and water, poor treatment of drinking water and food processing, cholera spreads easily. So whatever communities do consciously or unconsciously in these directions, fuel the outbreak of cholera,” he added.
“Many depend on water from wells and water vendors which are exposed to contamination. Despite this, only 15 percent of households treat their water before drinking while 84.7 percent do not carry out any form of treatment. 41 percent of people in Bauchi state have access to sanitation services with about 77 percent of the population making use of pit toilets and only 1 percent have access to basic hygiene services.”
BASEPA does so little at prevention
The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has said that 12 firms have been certified to ensure cleanliness in all the 20 local government areas.
The agency’s director, Dr Ibrahim Kabir said that he met with the head of the Primary Health Care Development Agency to strategise on curbing the outbreak of the disease. “But one of the factors that contribute to the outbreak is when people create a habitable environment for all kinds of diseases to escalate. We also have the responsibility of house-to-house inspection. There are over 125 community inspectors at the agency.”
Dr Kabir said the management of abattoir is the responsibility of about four agencies of which BASEPA is one. “We were there about two weeks ago along with the veterinary council, Bauchi council officials to inspect the facility. As a professional agency, we were able to identify some of the things that should be done in the Inkil abattoir.
“When you go to that place, you will see an unwholesome environment,” he said. “A lot of odours. Of course, they have water, but they don’t know how to use it. The slabs they use are highly unhygienic, especially when you look at the vehicles that convey the meat to the markets. They look unwholesome.”
WikkiTimes’ findings show that despite accrediting 12 firms to keep Bauchi clean as claimed by BASEPA, the city is still littered with waste.

“I was the only victim with the bandits and they told me that they saw my case as a high-profile kidnapping and they planned for it very well with different people from different teams to ensure that they succeed.
“I was not rescued and I didn’t pay any ransom. It was just miraculous.

The wife of the President of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Faith Oyedepo, has joined the debate started by her husband, Bishop David Oyedepo, about feminism in the country.
In a fresh social media post, the female cleric stated that any female organization which attempted to question the position of the man in the family should be regarded as being under the influence of demons.

Oyedepo’s wife said this in a post on her verified Facebook page.
She said, “Any woman or women’s organization that attempts to question the position of the man in the family should be regarded as being under a demonic influence.
“God expects that just as the Church is subject to Christ in everything, even so, women should be in subjection to their husbands in everything.”
Her reaction is coming a day after the feminists in the country scolded Oyedepo for saying women who were feminists should not marry because it would not work.
SaharaReporters had on Thursday reported that the Nigeria Feminist Forum condemned Oyedepo about his comments on feminism and marriage.

The clergyman had during a sermon to his congregation, specifically warned women against joining the feminist movement as he stated that feminism would lead to frustration and devastation.
But his disposition did not sit well with members of the feminist movement who asked him to explain if feminists in Nigeria were responsible for his disengaged “unproductive pastors.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, the NFF, through its Communications Officer, Angela Nkwo, had said its members were not happy with Oyedepo’s view that the “Feminism movement leads to frustration and devastation.”
The statement had read, “The Nigerian Feminist Forum (NFF) has condemned the comments credited to the celebrated cleric and founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo on feminism, saying he should proffer solutions to insecurity, inflation, amongst others confronting the nation.
“Casting huge aspersions on being a woman, its definition and expectations therein when he advised women against joining the feminist movement because it leads to frustration and devastation; contrary to the claims spread by people, feminism is about demanding gender equity, justice and access to equal resources for everyone, which will benefit families, communities and the wider society as a whole.
“The cleric’s comments justified the notion that women do not lead branches of the church popularly called Winners chapel, saying it is condemnable as women form a followership of the congregation.”
The group queried if feminists were the cause of his disengaged Pastors who failed to meet their assigned targets by the church even as they maintained they were males, who did not advance feminist principles.
“We need to ask the eminent cleric, did feminists and the coalition’s cause the unproductivity of his pastors, or the insecurity and high inflation that have enveloped the nation?” they queried.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has fixed August 24 for hearing of a fresh application by the Department of the State Services seeking remand of four aides of the Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho).
The four aides are part of the other 12 who had been in DSS detention since July but were granted bail recently by the court.

Although the court had on August 4 admitted them to bail with conditions yet to be perfected, the DSS in a fresh application is seeking to halt the bail execution.
The DSS counsel, I. Awo, had opposed the application for bail for four of the applicants in custody, saying that the service had not concluded its investigation.
The applicants include; Amudat Habibat Babatunde, Abideen Shittu, Jamiu Noah Oyetunji and Bamidele Sunday listed as 2nd, 5th, 6th and 12th applicants in the application.
The DSS subsequently prayed Justice Obiora Egwuatu to reverse himself in the bail granted four out of the 12 detainees and permit it to remand the four detainees for further interrogation.
The new application marked FHC/ABJ/CS/647/2021 was filed on August 9 at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
A hearing notice at the Federal High Court on Friday showed that Justice Egwuatu has fixed August 24 for DSS to argue the application.
Recall that Justice Egwuatu granted bail to the 12 associates of Yoruba nation activist, Igboho.
Four of the agitators were granted bail with the sum of N10million each and two sureties in like sum who must have a verifiable means of identification while the remaining eight were granted bail with the sum of N5million each with one surety each whom must be a civil servant.
The sureties must be residents of Abuja.
Justice Egwuatu while ruling on the enforcement of fundamental rights suit filed by their lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, had held that since there was no charge brought against the applicants who had been detained for 34 days.
Justice Egwuatu in addition held that the applicants should remain in the custody of the DSS pending the perfection of their bail.
However, since the grant of the bail, the detainees have not been able to meet some of the stringent aspects of the conditions.
Among the conditions said to be stringent are; the production of federal government employees above grade level 12 and others with properties in Abuja with verified title documents and three years tax reports.

A faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has cautioned that the “quickest route” to cause disintegration in the country is to deny the Igbo land from producing the president by 2023.
The group added that many presidential aspirants from South-East were putting finishing touches to their plans.

Ohanaeze said this while reacting to a comment by a former Works and Housing Minister, Adeseye Ogunlewe, who stated that the South-East could not produce Nigeria’s president in 2023 because they lacked unity.
Ohanaeze, in a statement by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, faulted Ogunlewe and accused him of engaing in “fallacies and falsehoods.”
The group threatened that blocking the South-East presidential aspirants may lead to secession and disintegration.
The statement reads in part, “Ordinarily, we would have ignored the man suffering from mouth diarrhoea, but we call on Nigerians to ignore him, as 2023 is the not about South East but the repair of a country sinking deep into the abyss of disintegration and insecurity.
“Ogunlewe is not speaking for “Omo Oduduwa or Yoruba nation” men and women of morality from the South East are supporting and canvassing for the 2023 Igbo Presidency, not the 2023 South East Presidency, the difference between the former and latter is what the likes of Ogunlewe may not comprehend easily.
“The survival of Nigeria beyond 2023 lies in the fact that every section of the country had tasted the Presidency except the Igbo, and attempts by the fifth columnist to coax and intimidate a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction is the quickest route to disintegration and an unending secessionist movement in Nigeria.
“We are clamouring for Igbo presidency, not South-East presidency, whether an Igbo from Niger Delta or Benue or Kogi or South East emerges in any major political party, we will identify with him and support him.
“Igbo leadership is at the forefront of this noble project, and Igbo presidential hopefuls are putting finishing touches on 2023 Presidency, surely we hope Ogunlewe will jump the ship immediately Igbo succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.”
