Aggrieved parents of abducted students of Bethel Secondary School in Maramara, Chickun Local Government Area of Kaduna state have chased away government officials led by the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan, who came to express sympathy over the abduction of their children.
Bandits had on Monday attacked the school located on the outskirts of the Kaduna state capital, whisking away over 160 students.

The gunmen were said to have invaded the school around 2am.
However, about 26 of the abducted students have reportedly been rescued by the police.
SaharaReporters gathered that the gunmen also killed two soldiers identified as Private Salisu Rabiu and Ordinary Seaman Bilal Mohammed.
The incident is the second abduction in the state within the last 24 hours.
The development comes just hours after bandits abducted babies, female nurses and security guards from the residential quarters of the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Centre (NTLC) in Zaria, on Sunday.
In a trending video seen by SaharaReporters, Aruwan, who is the commissioner in charge of internal security was chased away by some parents of the abducted students during a visit to the school few hours after the attack.
The commissioner was forced back into his official car as the parents rained abuses and curses on him and the Nasir El-Rufai-led state government.
“Go home! Go home! We don’t want you here, Go back, we don’t want to see here,” they were heard shouting in the video.

About 1,000 students and pupils have been abducted in Nigeria since December 2020.
In June 2021, some students of Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri in Kebbi state were kidnapped by gunmen who stormed the school.
On May 30, pupils were abducted from an Islamic School in Tegina, Niger State.
On March 12, bandits also abducted 39 students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
In February 2021, gunmen struck the Government Secondary School in Kagara, Niger State, abducting school pupils, teachers and workers.
Also on December 11, 2020, 344 secondary schoolboys were also abducted from Kankara in Katsina, the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari, while he was there.
Hundreds of schoolgirls were also kidnapped in Chibok in 2014 by Boko Haram, some of whom have not been released till date.
In February 2018, 110 schoolgirls were also abducted by Boko Haram from the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State. Five died in the process while others were later released, except Leah Sharibu, a Christian girl who refused to renounce her faith.

Confusion Trails Arrest Of Five Activists Who Wore ‘#BuhariMustGo T-shirts As DSS Accuses Pastor Enenche Of Inviting Them

Confusion has continued to trail the arrest of five activists who were arrested for wearing #BuhariMustGo T-shirts to Dunamis International Gospel Centre located along Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Road, Abuja on Sunday.
The activists are still being held and their whereabouts have been unknown since they were whisked away in a van and on two bikes by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

A delegation led by the human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore had on Monday afternoon met with the Senior Pastor of the church, Dr. Paul Enenche in the church who told them that the activists were arrested and detained by the operatives from DSS Headquarters, Asokoro but not the church security outfit.

Whereabouts Of Six #BuhariMustGo Protesters Arrested In Dunamis Church Unknown As DSS Denies Involvement

The pastor said he had made efforts as early as 7:00 am on Monday and reached out to the DSS authority to demand their release.
But sources from the DSS told SaharaReporters that it was the church that invited them to arrest the activists and that they picked them up from the church security team at the Dunamis security post.
There are fears for the well-being of the activists who were said to have been tortured and brutalised before they were taken away.
The activists have not been allowed to have access to their lawyers and families since they have been held.
Meanwhile, efforts by SaharaReporters to get the reaction of the DSS Spokesperson, Peter Afunnaya to the issue were unsuccessful as his mobile telephone line was switched off. He also did not respond to the text message sent to him.
A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong had faulted the arrest of the activists, saying they committed no offence known to law. He described their arrest as callous, illegal, and one that has no legal basis and justification.
Effiong said, “We’ve to decide whether to live in a democratic country or under dictatorship. The Church has no business discriminating against people based on their political views. If those activists wore T-shirts with the inscription ‘Buhari beyond 2023’, would they have been arrested?
“It is more troubling that those arrested were handed over to the SSS (State Security Service also known as Department of State Services). How did we get so low as a country? The civic space is shrinking by the day. Buhari will eventually leave that position but the damage that has been done to our country and civic space will persist after him.”

Dollar Bribery Video: Court Fines Governor Ganduje For Withdrawing Suit Against Journalist

A Kano State High Court on Tuesday fined Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje N800,000 for discontinuing his defamation suit against an online publication, Daily Nigerian, and it’s publisher and journalist, Ja’afar Ja’afar.
Ganduje had dragged the publisher, Ja’afar to court over a story and videos where he was purportedly seen stuffing foreign currencies in his pocket, Signal NG reports.

The court, presided over by Justice Suleiman Danmallan, who granted the application to discontinue the case, however, directed the governor to pay N400,000 each to Ja’afar and parent company of the newspaper, both defendants in the suit.
Counsel for both defendants, Ubi Eteng and Muhammad Danazumi had both urged the court to award a total of N400 million as cost of discontinuing the suit but Ganduje’s counsel, O.E.B. Offiong (SAN) urged the court to disregard the prayers, noting that since the defendants had informed the court they have filed a counter-claim, issue of cost should be delayed till then.
In the counter-claim filed by Ja’afar, the publisher asked the court to declare that the governor’s case was “vexatious, baseless, gold digging and of no substance whatsoever.”
He also seeks the declaration that “the deployment of thugs, political stalwarts and primary school pupils by the plaintiff at the grounds of the Kano State House of Assembly chanting slogans and insults on the person of the defendant is unwarranted, uncalled for, immoral and defamatory.”
He thereafter asked the court to direct the governor “to issue a public apology to the 1st defendant in at least two national daily newspapers for filing a baseless case against the 1st defendant”
He also sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining the plaintiff either by himself, agents, representative, privies or any person howsoever called from further filing any frivolous against him (Ja’afar) on this subject matter.
The judge has, however, directed that a date would be fixed for hearing of the counter-claim when the parties are ready.

E2%80%98illegal-abduction-repatriation%E2%80%99-nnamdi-kanu-nigeria Presidency Hails Security Agencies For ‘Illegal Abduction, Repatriation’ Of Nnamdi Kanu To Nigeria, Raid On Igboho’s House

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari

The Presidency has praised the nation’s security agencies for their collaboration in the operations that led to the arrest of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu and the raid on the home of Yoruba secessionist agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, alias Sunday Igboho.
Kanu, also a British national was re-arrested by the Nigerian government last week and faces an 11 counts of treason, treasonable felony, terrorism and illegal possession of firearms, among others.

IPOB had accused the Muhammadu Buhari-led government of abducting him, a claim confirmed by Kanu’s attorney, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who accused Kenya’s special police force of arresting, detaining and torturing him before he was later handed over to the Nigerian government.
Last Thursday, the Department of State Services (DSS) invaded Ighoho’s house in the Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo state.
At least 10 vehicles belonging to the self-styled activist, including his G-wagon, Prado SUVs, and valuable properties, furniture, and windows were destroyed.
Bullet holes were also found on the buildings in the compound while blood spills were seen on the premises by our correspondent. The secret police also paraded 13 of Igboho’s guards and close associates in Abuja.
The DSS also said it killed two of his associates in a gun duel with the secret police.
Reacting in a statement, Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity said the international operation against Kanu was closely coordinated leading to his handover to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and then brought back to Nigeria to face charges.
On Igboho, the statement noted that he had been conducting acts of terror and disturbing the peace under the guise of protecting fellow kinsmen, noting that his utterances had morphed into vile and hateful speeches.
The statement read, “Last week, we saw the enhanced collaboration of the Nigerian law enforcement agencies, as they executed with great synchronisation arrests of individuals who had inflicted pain and hardships on fellow citizens. The subversive leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a group known for its murderous actions and virulent messaging was detained as a result of cross-border cooperation.
“This international operation was executed in a closely coordinated fashion following which he was handed over to our National Intelligence Agency, and then returned to Nigeria to face the Law.
“The violence inspired by IPOB has led to hundreds of fatalities, particularly targeted at government assets and law enforcement agents. Additionally, there have been at last count, fifty (55) separate violent attacks, heavily concentrated in the South-East, which heaped further hardship on our honest and hardworking citizens, preventing them from earning their livelihood and going about their normal lives.
“The government had long been monitoring the activities of IPOB and had strong cause to believe that their funding sources include proceeds of suspected illicit criminal activities. By this singular action of our security forces, sanity, calm and peace have been returned to our communities who previously lived in constant fear of these misguided elements.
“In furtherance of continued diligent work, the State Security Service on Thursday, 1st July raided the residence of a militant ethnic Secessionist, who has also been conducting acts of terror and disturbing the peace under the guise of protecting fellow ‘kinsmen’.
“His seditious utterances and antics, which he is known to have publicly expressed, have over time morphed into very hateful and vile laden speeches. It must be highlighted that the government respects the fundamental rights of citizens to express their views and recognizes this as a democratic tenet.
“However, any attempt to build an armoury coupled with plans either subtle or expressed to undermine our unity as a nation will not be condoned.
“Mr President’s directives to Security Services regarding anyone seen to be carrying arms, particularly AK-47 are clear and require no further illumination. Assault weapons are not tools of peace-loving people and as such, regardless of who they are and where they are from, the security agencies should treat them all the same.
“The successes of our security agencies must be commended as they have demonstrated significant deftness, guile and secrecy in carrying out these missions. This level of professionalism must be sustained and brought to bear as we focus on extracting from our society those who have found a new trade-in targeting students, rural dwellers and our citizens in the North-West. The nation recognises their efforts and sacrifice.”

Nigerian Lawmakers Propose To Jail Protesters For Five Years

A bill proposing a five-year jail term for unlawful protesters in the country has scaled through first reading at the House of Representatives.
The Bill entitled: ‘An Act To Amend The Criminal Code ACT, CAP 38, Laws Of The Federation Of Nigeria, 2004 To Further Preserve The Sanctity Of Human Life And Property, And To Provide Specifically For Mob Action, Prescribe Punishment And Other Matters’, is sponsored by Rep. Emeka Chinedu Martins (PDP-Imo).

The Bill, which was presented before the House on Thursday, has been approved by the House for a second reading.
The provisions of the proposed Act, are as follows: (1) The provisions of the Criminal Code Act, (in this Bill referred to as the “Principal Act”) is amended as set out in this Bill (2) Substitute for section 69 of the Principal Act, a new section 69.
“Definitions: Unlawful assembly, Riot, Mob action (a) When three or more persons, with intent to carry out some common purpose, assemble in such a manner or, being assembled, conduct themselves in such a manner as to cause persons in the neighbourhood to fear on reasonable grounds that the persons so assembled will tumultuously disturb the peace, or will by such assembly needlessly and without any reasonable occasion provoke other persons tumultuously to disturb the peace, they are an unlawful assembly. It is immaterial that the original assembling was lawful if, being assembled; they conduct themselves with a common purpose in such a manner as aforesaid”.
It also states that, “An assembly of three or more persons who assemble for the purpose of protecting any house against persons threatening to break and enter the house in order to commit a felony or misdemeanour therein is not an unlawful assembly.
“(c) When an unlawful assembly has begun to act in so tumultuous a manner as to disturb the peace, the assembly is called a riot, and the persons assembled are said to be riotously assembled.
“(d) When an unlawful assembly becomes violent as to commit unlawful acts against any person or property, the assembly is called a mob and their violent act is referred to as mob action”.
It adds that “(a) Any person who takes part in a riot is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years.
“(b) Any person who takes part in a mob action is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for five years.
(4) Substitute for Section 76 of the Principal Act, a new section 76:(a) Section 76. Mob action against any person or property.
“Any persons who assembled together as a mob to commit violent act against any person or property are guilty of a felony and each of them is liable to imprisonment for life”.
The Bill explains that it “seeks to amend the Criminal Code Act, Cap 38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to further preserve the sanctity of human life and property, and to provide specifically for the crime of mob action, prescribe punishment and other matters connected therewith”.
The sponsor of the piece of legislation against unlawful protesters, in his lead debate, said: “Mr Speaker, my highly respected colleagues, permit me to lead the debate on this very important Bill titled the Criminal Code Act Amendment Bill, 2021.
“This Bill was read for the first time in this Hallowed Chamber. Mr. Speaker, my honourable colleagues, this Bill seeks to amend the Criminal Code Act Cap 38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, to provide specifically for the crime of mob action, prescribe punishment and for other related matters.
“Mr Speaker, every now and then we hear and read in the news of mobs moving against people and properties.
“The word “mob” connotes a disorderly crowd of people, intent on causing trouble or violence. It is usually triggered spontaneously by accusations of a bystander, then joined by another and then another till it turns into a crowd of vengeful people causing carnage and destruction on its path.
“The danger with mob action is that participants typically believe they are punishing an accused for violation of the law, when in fact they are delivering jungle justice to an accused who may be totally innocent and has not been given an opportunity to be fairly heard. They serve as accusers, judges and executors.
“Most participants in mob actions are usually not informed first-hand about the situation before joining the destructive crowd in blind rage to carry out their orgy of violence.
“There have been records of crowds inflicting fatal injuries on their targets and destroying and looting properties based on unfounded accusations of theft of an item, allegations of missing genitals, witchcraft and blasphemy.
“As quickly as the mob causes carnage, the participants disperse in all directions, making it difficult for them to be apprehended.
“A notable case is that of the Aluu Four in 2012, involving four male students from the University of Port Harcourt who went to recover a debt, but were set up and accused of theft leading to their gruesome murder by a mob in Aluu, Rivers State.
“More recently in 2016, a man accused of homosexuality was beaten to death in Ondo State. Another man was also lynched in Ebonyi State, over accusations of theft of motorcycle. There have also been records of similar incidents this year.
“The failure of our law enforcement agents to prevent mob justice or punish those who participate in it has lent an air of acceptability to this vile practice. How often people resort to jungle justice as a form of punishment to alleged offenders is also a testament to the fact that people have lost faith in the criminal justice system. Ever too often the participants in mob actions go unpunished.
“The Criminal Code Act in section 69 defines riot as when an unlawful assembly turns tumultuous as to disturb the peace, but did not provide for when the unlawful assembly turns violent against persons and property.
“This amendment to the Bill seeks to remedy that by providing for specific amendments to sections 69, 71 and 76 of the Criminal Code Act dealing with mob action and further prescribing punishment for the crime.
“The amendment to the Act will encourage our law enforcement agencies to go after persons involved in mob action and give impetus to the criminal justice system to bring such offenders to book.
“If more participants in mob action are apprehended and publicly prosecuted it will serve as a deterrent to others.
“I therefore humbly urge you to support the second reading of this Bill and its legislative proposal”.

Edo Government Vows To Arrest, Prosecute Contractor Over Shoddy Road Project

The Edo State Government has criticised the handling of the Lawani Crescent road project in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.

This followed a viral video which exposed the shoddy execution of the road project in the state.

Philip Shaibu, the state deputy governor who inspected the project and described it as substandard, said the project falls short of the standard expected of road projects in the state.

The deputy governor, while commending the person who raised the alarm in the viral video, said the contractor should be brought to justice.

“We thank the whistle-blower for raising the alarm over this bad job and call citizens to take charge of all government properties in their area. The contractor handling the Lawani Crescent project must be arrested for the bad job done and handed over to ICPC (Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission) and the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission), to enable us to ascertain exactly what happened.

“The project stands revoked and the state government is taking over the reconstruction of the road immediately. N360m is what is allocated to Akoko-Edo constituency projects by the National Assembly this year. We would investigate all that to ensure we have value for money,” he said.
