Sowore Lambasts UFC Star, Usman, For Posing With Nigerian Leaders He Knocked During EndSARS Killings

Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has lambasted Ultimate Fighting Championship star, Kamaru Usman, for posing with Nigerian politicians, including Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu who superintended the October 2020 EndSARS killings at the Lekki Tollgate.
Usman had been critical of the roles of the Nigerian leaders during the recent EndSARS violence which engulfed several parts of the country.

Sowore noted that it was unfortunate that Usman, who had earlier knocked the politicians for their repressive actions during the EndSARS crisis, would return to the country and pose for the camera with the same political actors.
The activist stated this on his Twitter handle, saying, “EndSars @USMAN84kg once asked ‘where is President Buhari’ during the #Endsars struggles but once he arrived Nigeria recently he was cavorting with politicians who murderers and persecuted #Endsars protesters (sic)! Hypocrisy at #UFC level!”

In the photographs shared by Sowore, Usman posed with the Lagos State Governor, Sanwo-Olu, and posed with Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello in another photograph.
He also posed with the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shuaibu, and with the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare in another photograph.
Meanwhile, some commentators also shared Sowore’s concern about how the political class are quick to celebrate Nigerians in the diaspora but fail to develop talents in the country.
A commentator said, “Nigerian elites and corrupt politicians are quick to celebrate a successful Nigerian who made their mark outside Nigeria…What happened to our hidden talents back home?If you get money, relocate for good…I hope my tweet is clear.” Nigerian elites and corrupt politicians are quick to celebrate a successful Nigerian who made their mark outside Nigeria…What happened to our hidden talents back home?.If you get money, relocate for good…I hope my tweet is clear?— â??hellype ð??? (@Phellype__) June 17, 2021

Another said, “They all lack character. Very bad example for the next generation.”
Only two days ago, Nigerian tweeps had taken to their social media handles to call out Nigerian football super star, Mikel Obi, stressing that Kogi State Governor, Bello’s administration was not deserving of the accolade the footballer gave him.
They had called him out for pledging support for the political aspirations of the Kogi governor.
Obi had said he was hopeful that Bello and himself could work together as a team to achieve success.
Sowore, also via his Twitter handle on Monday, described Obi as a sycophant.
Sowore wrote, “@mikel_john_obi As ur career in football flames out, another one starts in sycophancy + a** licking! At least for sycophancy, you don’t need any rigorous practice! Enjoy it while it lasts with@OfficialGYBKogi the most irresponsible and incompetent Nigerian governor below 50.” @mikel_john_obi As ur career in football flames out, another one starts in sycophancy + a** licking! UPDATE: Identities Of Two Persons Killed In Ibadan Gang War Revealed

File photo used to illustrate story.

No fewer than two people were killed in a gang war in the Inalende and Abebi areas of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, on Thursday afternoon.
SaharaReporters reports that two people were killed on Wednesday when shop owners and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), known as Park Management System (PMS) in the state, clashed.

File photo used to illustrate story.

The Guardian Nigeria

But unlike Wednesday’s incident, Thursday’s incident was a gang war involving cult groups.
The deceased killed were identified as Transformer and Ishaja, but those were their nicknames.
The cause of the clash was unknown at the time of filing this report but our correspondent gathered that the area is generally known to be the base of cult members.
SaharaReporters reports that there have been killing and robbery cases in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, in recent time.
A source told SaharaReporters that “they killed two people already. We have yet to know those behind the attack. The police have yet to get here,” he said.

Unlike Amotekun, Ebube Agu Was Built On Sentiments, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Says

Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has rejected calls to take over the South-East security outfit, Ebube Agu, citing lack of logistics.
This group made its position known in a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, on Thursday.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo

According to the statement, there have been calls by well-meaning Igbo people for the group to take over the security formation.
Ohanaeze, however, said it would not yield to such request as there were no consultative meetings or authorisation before the outfit was formed.
The group further urged South-East governors to provide the necessary logistics needed for operations of Ebube Agu, while calling for the reinstatement of the chairman of the South-East Governors Security Committee, Obi Umahi, who resigned based on logistics deficiencies in operation.
The statement read, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has rejected the calls from well-meaning Igbos to take over Ebube Agu Southeast Security Outfit, as there were no consultative meetings and people’s approval or authorisation for the outfit before its formation.
”The South-East governors should be encouraged to sufficiently provide necessary logistics and reinstate the Chairman of South-East Governors Security Committee who resigned based on logistics deficiencies in operation, unlike the Amotekun, where the South-West Governors provided adequate facilities and logistics, Ebube Agu was built on emotional grounds and sentiments.
”Ohanaeze Ndigbo is not saddled with the Constitutional rights of protection of lives and properties in the South-East, and we are independently funded through communal support of Ndigbo without any government’s consent, it will be horrible to compound the responsibility of Ebube Agu on us, South-East Governors are capable of providing logistics and we are in full support of them.”
SaharaReporters recall that the Chairman, South-East Security Committee, Umahi resigned his appointment on June 4 following logistics issues.
The South-East Governors’ Forum had on August 31, 2019, appointed Umahi as the chairman security committee.

E2%80%94-teacher We Had Prior Information That Bandits Would Attack Kebbi School, Community— Teacher

A teacher working with Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri in Kebbi State, says they had prior information that bandits would invade the school and community.
The school on Thursday came under attack with some students and staff members abducted.

According to Daily Trust, the teacher, who did not want to be named said that before the attack, they had received information on a plan to invade Birnin Yauri community.
He said to prevent an attack on the school, a detachment of mobile policemen was deployed last week.
The teacher said when the bandits finally struck, the security operatives engaged them in a shootout but they were overpowered.
He said after abducting the victims, the bandits used a bus belonging to the parent of a student who came to the school to pick up his son who was to take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on Saturday, to evacuate the victims.
He said in the confusion that ensued after the attack, the school authorities were unable to conduct a headcount to ascertain the number of abducted students.
“All I can tell you now is that one of the policemen guarding the school was killed. Many of our students, both male, and female, were abducted by the bandits. It is a co-education school, you know it is a Federal Government College.
“Three or four teachers of the college were abducted. Out of the abductees, there is a Vice Principal and a female teacher. Two students, a male and female were said to have been shot by the bandits. The boy was shot in the buttocks while the girl sustained a gunshot injury on her arm,” he said.

Kebbi Lawmaker Confirms Abduction At College, Says Bandits Notified Community Of Attack

Yusuf Sununu

The member representing Ngaski/Shanga/Yauri Federal Constituency of Kebbi State at the House of Representatives, Hon. Yusuf Sununu has confirmed the abduction of students and teachers of Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri, Kebbi State.
The lawmaker called on the Nigerian Government and security agencies to rise to the occasion and rescue the abducted students and teachers.

Yusuf Sununu

Sununu, who addressed journalists at the National Assembly, said the number of students and teachers abducted had yet to be ascertained.
Sununu said bandits have been having a field day in his constituency, adding that the southern part of the state has witnessed a lot of attacks recently.
The lawmaker said, “Recently we lost over 154 people from my constituency when they were travelling in a boat that capsized, and we could only account for 98 corpses and 22 survivors.
“A week ago, we had another calamity when bandits, according to eyewitnesses, numbering about 300, each with AK-47 rifles, and using very strong motorcycles, came into my constituency.
“They had a field day and operated for more than eight hours, going from house to house, room to room, collecting money, handsets, motorcycles, and cattle.
“That led to a massive influx of internally displaced persons to the headquarters of the emirate in the town of Yauri.”
He, however, disclosed that the bandits left a message after the attack, saying they would be back.
“Taking it seriously, some people refused to go back and today, they repeated what they had done earlier and they came into the constituency.
“They were able to have access after a strong fight with the policemen that were guarding the Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri. They made an inroad to the school,” he said.

Nigerians Express Confusion As Ex-Presidential Aspirant, Garba’s Crowwe Applies For Broadcasting Commission’s Licence

Crowwe, a social media platform, has sought a license from the National Broadcasting Commission as part of the Federal Government’s new initiative to register all social media sites in the country.
The app was initiated by IPI Solutions Limited, a company belonging to the ex-presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba.

Nigerians have questioned the rationale behind this as the Crowwe app was initially introduced as a social networking app.
Some days ago, the Crowwe app was taken down by Google, but Garba said it will be back in a few days.
“Crowwe now has 31, 245 users with roughly 2, 270 corporate accounts. We sent a letter to the NBC requesting a license in reaction to the Federal Government’s announcement, but we have yet to hear back. We’ll send a second letter if they don’t react by Friday.”
When asked when Crowwe would return to the Google app store, Garba said, “There are some lapses. We chose to take advantage of some opportunities because it consumes a lot of data depending on customer concerns. We’ve made changes. We’ll have it up by Saturday or Sunday.”
Garba’s comment that Crowwe has applied for NBC’s licence has been criticised on social media.
Many Nigerians opined that the move by Crowwe is a major pointer that the app is in support of the government’s regulation of free speech in the country.
Here are some comments on Twitter:

Another reason to support Instagram deleting Adamu Garba’s account and Facebook and @Twitter should do same. He’s so desperate to market that is app no matter what it costs the fundamental rights of the people he wants on the app. Those of you pitting him should continue Olorunshola Emmanuel (@iamimanuel) June 17, 2021

(@azpeters) June 17, 2021

On Facebook, Nigerians are also expressing sentiments for Crowwe’s position stating that the NBC licence for social media platforms is undemocratic.
A user, Benny Odhomi said, ”Software Applications (apps) are being developed every day globally. Does it mean that every developer has to submit his app to a regulator in Nigeria before it could be deployed? Moreover, is the www not operating in a borderless spectrum? This government really needs a rude awakening.”

Another user, Okonkwo Anthony wrote, “People are clamouring for freedom of speech and expression, you are here seeking a stupid licence; backward people are keeping people down in this Naija.”
Erondu Nnena said, ”Nigerians may not be honouring letters in such big government parastatal, you may need to send a representative from your company to their office main branch. I think it’s the National Broadcasting Corporation? NBC.
”What are you trying to set up? Radio station, private TV station, or what? Have you registered it with your business name at CAC? Because you may need the documents to register it at NBC. I am just asking.”

Still On UNN N500 Cash Prize For Best Graduating Student By Olabisi Deji-Folutile

Olabisi Deji-Folutile

I got several telephone calls following reports of the N500 cash prize awarded to the best graduating students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka a few days back. According to the news report, the three best graduating students of the federal government-owned institution were asked to share a sum of N1, 500 among themselves.  The award was tagged Sir Odumegwu Memorial Prize for the best graduating student. Although, the prize sum is N1500, three students had the same 4.63 CGPA, thus making all of them best graduating students, so the university emphasised that the prize money would be shared among them.
Likewise, two students in the Department of Accountancy were awarded the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation Prize of N1000 for being the best. Both had the same CGPA, and were also asked to share the Prize money.
Most of the callers wanted to know if the N500 prize reported was a typographical error or real as they couldn’t imagine such ridiculous prizes being awarded for academic excellence. After confirming the authenticity of the news report, some still chose not to believe. I read some WhatsApp comments claiming the story was fake and the handiwork of mischievous editors out to embarrass the Federal Government and tarnish the image of the UNN.  I don’t blame them. Some things are hard to believe. Unfortunately, this story is not only true; it is not strange as well in our public institutions.  In one of my previous columns, I highlighted some bizarre prizes awarded for academic excellence in some prestigious Nigerian universities with some best graduating students getting as low as N200. Below are some of the examples.

Olabisi Deji-Folutile

In my article published on October 8, 2020, Somadina got a tuber of yam and a fowl for   emerging the Best Graduating Student of Mass Communication from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), formerly known as Anambra State University.
Bamisaye Tosin got N200 for being the best graduating student of the Ekiti State University’s (EKSU) Department of Civil Engineering during his set. Remember, Ekiti State prides itself as Nigeria’s Fountain of Knowledge.
Oluwole Hikmat Ibrahim-Buruji got N2000 prize for topping the University of Ibadan’s Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies in the 2016 academic session while Esther Fatogun, the 2018 best graduating student of Lagos State Polytechnic only got a handshake. People are free to fact-check these pieces of information.
Nevertheless, Lagos State  government did something spectacular for the best graduating student of its State University in 2019 as Ridwan Ola-Gbadamosi of the Faculty of Engineering  got a whopping N200, 000 for emerging the institution’s overall best.   He got N100, 000 as faculty best and N100, 000 as university best. The university’s 2020 best graduating student was the luckiest so far. Oladimeji Shotunde was not only awarded a post-graduate scholarship to any university in the world by the state government, he got a N5 million cash prize. This is probably why many people think the N500 prize was a  typographical error. But, the truth is, the Lagos case is a rarity in any Nigerian university be it private or public.
Nuhu Ibrahim, the 2018 best graduating student from Ahmadu Bello University, was also among the lucky lots.  The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, offered to sponsor his post graduate studies. He also got the Dean’s award for the best student from his faculty, a laptop; an award from Royal Choice Hotel worth N50, 000; and another one from Chief Felix, also worth N50, 000. In all, he got about N100000 for his academic feat.
From the records above, it is clear that awarding N500 prize for academic feat is not a big deal in a Nigerian public institution. Some go as far as giving their best graduates mugs. This is just a reflection of the value we place on intellectualism and academic excellence. It also shows the level of decay in the system because things were not this bad in the past.  Before now, students with outstanding academic performances were lured into the academics; they got automatic employment as graduate assistants and enjoyed scholarships to pursue higher degrees to enable the universities to have intellectually robust and rich faculty.  Little wonder Nigeria has continued to retrogress.
I remember that the Federal Government during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan also introduced a Presidential Scholarship Scheme for First Class Nigerian Graduates as part of efforts to achieve the  Transformation Agenda.  All first class graduates from any approved university were qualified to sit an exam where about 100 beneficiaries were selected based on merit. There was nothing like federal character or quota system in selecting winners. These beneficiaries were then sponsored for postgraduate studies in top 28 universities in the world. They were expected to return to Nigeria and help build the country.
However, everything changed when President Muhammadu Buhari came to power. The current President reportedly complained that there was no single Northerner on the list of the 101 successful candidates shortlisted for the scholarship programme in 2015. Since then, nothing much has been heard of the scheme. How can a nation that allows ethnicity and quota system to reign above academic excellence develop, sacrificing merit on the altar of quota system?  If we continue to subject everything to quota system, how do we create room for healthy competition and hard work?
Take for example,  cut-off marks for entrance into unity schools. While cut-off mark for students from Abia State was pegged at 130, the cut-off mark for students from Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara states were 9, 3, 2 and 4 respectively.  These are the same students that will gain admission to universities with lower marks all in the name of quota system. Tell me, how can these kinds of students bag a first class?  Stopping a laudable programme because people from some parts of the country do not qualify for a scholarship programme is unfair to hardworking students from other parts of the country. Some people have said the north cannot survive without the quota system, I agree. No region or nation can develop when you don’t value hard work and merit.
Anyway, it is good that people are angry and disappointed that a Nigerian first-generation university could still award a prize of N1500 to its best brains. Many have also observed the huge disparity between the paltry university prize money and the millions of naira that people get when they win in reality shows like the Big Brother Naija. I agree. The difference is truly clear!
But as earlier stated in my previous column, I don’t have anything against anyone taking part in a reality show; I also don’t  feel it’s wrong for a  company  to give  any  prize it deems fit  to  winners of  its shows. After all, it’s all business. A smart company should be able to identify a good business opportunity and maximise its benefits.  If these companies were convinced that Nigerians valued education, they would also have tailored their shows towards that direction.
Let’s be truthful to ourselves, how many Nigerians would for example have voted if BBN had been an education show? How many people would have been glued to their TV sets as they did last year if the competition had been about finding the best brains among Nigerian youths who could proffer solution to Nigeria’s teething problems? You see, every society gets what it deserves.
Some have also argued that many Nigerians are angry, frustrated and just need an escape routes and  that programmes like BBN help them to shift attention away from their objects of frustrations. I quite understand. Nigeria is truly a hell of a country to a lot of people.  The only snare however is that nothing will change until a change is demanded.  After all said and done, Nigerians would still be the ones to decide the kind of society they want. If they continue to opt for reality shows instead of pushing for a paradigm shift to re-channel our governments and companies’ attention to valuing excellence and academic feats, the country will keep retrogressing. That’s the awful truth!
The earlier Nigerians realised that we are the architects of our own destiny; the better it would be for us all.  We all need to re-examine the value we place on education, brilliance and academic feats. Instead of expressing shock and complaining about ridiculous prize awards for academic feats, Nigerians should aim at doing something differently. A lot can be achieved when individuals, indigenous companies, etc, start to prioritise education.  Nothing stops Nigerian companies, alumni associations and well-to-do people from also encouraging academic excellence by instituting mouth-watering prize awards in our institutions. Honestly, we all need to re-arrange our priorities. Otherwise, nothing will change. The choice is ours really!
Lest I forget, we still need schemes like the Presidential Scholarship Programme for First Class Nigerian graduates. Such a laudable scheme shouldn’t die because of quota system.

Borno Governor, Zulum Spent N350million On Crowd Mobilisation To Prevent Protest, Booing Of Buhari By Residents—Sources

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno spent N350 million to mobilise the crowd for the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to the state, SaharaReporters has learnt.
SaharaReporters also gathered that the governor considered the spending necessary to ensure that the Nigerian leader was not booed during his official visit to the state on Thursday.

SaharaReporters had reported that there were fears ahead of the President’s visit that he would be greeted by protesters or be booed because of the insecurity in the state.

“It cost Zulum N350 million to mobilise the crowd they touted as Buhari’s supporters,” a source in Borno State government told SaharaReporters.
“When President Buhari visited Lagos last week, they had to fly him over the city in a chopper because of a hostile crowd,” another source added.
Governor Zulum had earlier urged residents to show appreciation to President Buhari during his visit.
The governor in a statewide broadcast on Tuesday gave reasons the people of the state should honour the President when he arrived in Maiduguri.

Borno is the epicentre of insurgency war in Nigeria.
The state has been at the end of incessant deadly attacks by terrorist groups–Boko Haram and the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP), and many residents have grown frustrated with the Buhari government.
Ahead of his election in 2015, Buhari promised to defeat Boko Haram but six years into his government, that promise has not been fulfilled.
In February 2020, residents of the state booed the President as his convoy drove in and when it was leaving Maiduguri, Borno State, during a condolence visit.
The residents were heard shouting in Hausa “Bama so, ka samu a kunya.” Meaning “We don’t want you, because you have disappointed us.”
Buhari, during his visit to Borno, however, said he is committed to serving Nigerians as a result of the love shown to him.
This was made known in a statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
Buhari, during his visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, said all efforts will be made to improve the livelihood of Nigerians, starting with providing adequate security.
He also stressed that he owes Nigerians a debt of gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
Speaking at the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Buhari noted that he started his administrative career as a military officer in Borno State as a governor for seven months, under Gen. Murtala Ramat Mohammed, before he was appointed Minister of Petroleum by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was then a military Head of State.
Buhari was quoted as saying, “My commitment to serve Nigerians is a payback for the love shown to me. I started my political adventure in Maiduguri and I always look forward to coming here.”
He commended the Governor of Borno State, Zulum, for his forthrightness, resilience, and drive in bringing development to the state, despite security challenges.
He noted that very few leaders will take the risks Zulum had taken over the years to protect his people and promote peace and development, especially in putting his life on the line by spending nights with vulnerable people.
Zulum then thanked the President for visiting Borno State to appraise the security situation, and commission some of the completed projects in the last few years.
