Labour Party Chairman Writes INEC, Accuses National Secretary Of Forgery, Impersonation, Intimidation, Hijack Of Party’s Structure

Comrade Maria Labeke, the acting national chairman of the Labour Party, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognise Barrister Julius Abure as the leader of the party.
This followed the death of the national chairman of the party, Comrade A.A Salam on 29th December, 2020.

Labeke in a petition to INEC dated April 13 accused Abure, who is currently the national secretary of LP of forgery, impersonation, harassment, intimidation and hijacking of party’s structure from her.
She added that Abure manipulated the late Salam to take the party away from its core values.
The petition read, “That on the 29th day of December 2020, the National Secretary of the party, Barrister Julius Abure called me and informed me that the party’s Chairman, Comrade A. A. Salam is dead, he proposed to me that as the oldest Deputy National Chairman of the Party, I should automatically assume the position of acting National Chairman of the party. I informed him that I will not be a party to discussion centered on immediately taking over the position of my boss, Comrade A. A. Salam who just died on the same date.
“We hold a meeting of the available members of the National Working Committee and after some consultations, it was resolved that I step in from being the Deputy National Chairman to the acting National Chairman.
“Julius Abure manipulatively brought a letter to me to sign informing me that the letter was a notification to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) inviting them to a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Party.
“The NEC meeting was initially scheduled to hold at Delta State, but Julius Abure changed the venue to his hometown of Benin, Edo State, The reason given for this manipulative action was that he is on the ground in Edo State and that he would deplore sufficient things to protect my interest whenever any person (s) wants to plan against me.
“Julius Abere always brags about influence with the Independent National Electoral Commission and his ability to dispatch things at will. Several times, he has informed me that he has moles at the INEC’S office that he pays and are always ready to do his bidding and give him information whenever any attempt is made to right the various atrocities he commits against the party.
“On Sunday, the 25th day of March, 2021, some members of the National Executive Council of the party came to inform me that there would be an election to elect a new Chairman of the party, that there are plans to eliminate me if I resist the heist that Julius Abere is planning.
“I promptly directed Julius Abere in my capacity as the acting National Chairman of the party to convey a National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to decide the agenda for the National Executive Council meeting (NEC) but Julius Abere refuted the directive.
“Rather than comply with the directive as required by the party’s Constitution, 2009, Julius Abere on the 29th day of March, 2021 at about 8 am approached me and offered to compensate me for all the money I had expended nurturing the party and that he had perfected plans to emerge as the Chairman of the party that same date and that since I didn’t have money and alone in his state, he would emerge and that there was nothing I could do about it.
“I promptly informed him that producing another chairman was not part of the agenda of the NEC meeting and as the acting National Chairman of the party, I would not subscribe to such illegality that clearly violates the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act of Nigeria.
“As promised, Julius Abure dispatched thugs to every nook and cranny of the hotel where the meeting was held, after the conclusion of the agenda of the National Electoral Committee meeting which where (1) Opening Prayer, (2) Remarks by the Acting National Chairman, (3) Secretariat Report , (4) Matters Arising from the Report (5) Presentation of Adopted Resolution- at the point of reaching the sixth item, being the A.O.B, someone from the crowd stated that Julius Abere made the chairman of the party from that day. The thugs were on ground intimidated everyone as none of us could against the plans of Julius Abere.
“Immediately that motion asking that Julius Abere be made the Chairman was seconded, Abere brought out several documents from his folders and coerced me into signing each and everyone of them without perusing through (through the aid of the thugs he had on the ground). Mr Chairman, I was specifically told that unless I corporate and abide by whatever they do, and sign everything that was brought before me, I would not leave their city alive.”
Labeke said the procedure adopted in holding the National Executive Council meetings to nominate and appoint Abere is unknown to the party’s constitution.
“The election of a National Chairman was not part of the published agenda for the National Executive Council meeting held on the 29th March, 2021 in Benin City. I have attached a copy of the said agenda for your perusal sir,” she added.
“Even though my name was forwarded to the Commission as the Acting National Chairman of the party, Julius Abere continued to retain the name of Late Alhaji Abdulkadri A. Salam (Baradenpaiko) as the National Chairman at other forum.
“Julius Abere as a lawyer manipulated the former Chairman of the party, Comrade A. A. Salam to estrange the party from its core values and as the party of the Nigerian workers which was founded by the Nigerian workers who donated money to union leaders to form the Labour Party on behalf of us the workers. (I retired as a Director and a unionist with the National Union of Local Government Employees; NULGE). I was one of those drafted from NULGE to form the party from the cradle in 2003 while Comrade Ejofor (the then General Secretary of the Civil Services Union) was appointed as the pioneer acting National Chairman. I was the 1st National Treasurer of the party and held the position for ten years, after I was drafted in from NULGE alongside Comrade A. A. Salam from where I rose to the position of acting National Chairman. Julius Abere was never part of this struggle and has only come to reap where he did not sow.
“It is my prayer, Mr Chairman, Sir, that the Commission should not recognise Julius Abere and all the persons he produced from the charade Benin NEC meeting as same was done in violation of the party’s only recognised constitution, the 2009 constitution.
“Julius Abere has successfully ostracised core members of the NWC, NEC and stakeholders of the party with the active connivance of some unscrupulous INEC officials whom he always brags are ready to do his bidding for a fee. Some of our people are ready to slug it out with him but have decided to follow the appropriate channel by first following the due process of law by contacting the commission.”

E2%80%94-fayose I Have Conceded Defeat But South-West Congress Election Was A Scam— Fayose

Ayodele Fayose

A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has alleged irregularities in the recently conducted South-West Congress of the Peoples Democratic Party held in Osun State, describing the exercise as a scam.

On Monday, the major opposition party held its zonal congress, where Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, a candidate backed by the camp of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, emerged as the party’s new South-West Zonal Chairman.

Ayodele Fayose

Arapaja polled 343 votes to defeat Dr Eddy Olafeso, a loyalist of ex-Governor Fayose, who had 330.

Reacting to the exercise during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Fayose said he has conceded and accepted the outcome.

According to him, this is not because the process was transparent, but because the PDP must not lose its quest to take over power from the ruling All Progressives Congress in the South-West.

This is despite the fact that the PDP is only holding the grip of Oyo State with Governor Makinde at the helm of affairs, as other South-West states like Ekiti, Ondo, Lagos, Ondo and Osun are under the control of the APC.

He said, “I have conceded, I conceded not because they won. I conceded because the PDP is a bigger picture. I want to say that conceding does not amount to defeat, it is sheer exhibiting leadership.

“Take a look at the result and the characters behind the result before I will tell you the issue. I am on one side alone; I have on the side of Governor Makinde, two former governors – Segun Oni and Olagunsoye Oyinlola. They have on their side seven deputy governors and two speakers and serving senators.

“The results in quotes, Arapaja scored 343. My candidate Eddy Olafeso scored 330, a difference of 13 votes. I’m glad because that is a show of strength. Whether the result is right or wrong, the world can see in the one-man army that has faced them all and without rigging, they lost.”

When asked if the election was rigged, Fayose replied in the affirmative saying: “Very clearly.”

The ex-Ekiti State governor revealed that he approached the court to obtain an order to prevent the PDP from conducting the congress in Oyo State over fear of violence.

He alleged that the violence came from Oyo to Osun with 200 buses bearing the number plates of Oyo, adding that they blocked the venue of the exercise.

Fayose added, “They came with cutlasses and guns all night, it was in the public knowledge.”

Speaking further, he accused the collation officer, Chris Anyanwu from Imo State of discrepancies while counting the votes cast.

Despite his reservations for the zonal congress, Fayose insisted that he would not be a party to those who will say the PDP will not move forward.

“For me, as to that election, it was a scam but I must agree as a leader of the PDP. I have been working for this party. I am one of the voices that cannot be forgotten in the PDP.

“And I will not sit down here and say because of 13 votes, because of manipulation, the party must not move forward,” he added.

E2%80%93-opc How Ex-Army Chief, Dambazau Made Money From Boko Haram Conflict, Bought Houses in Dubai – OPC

The Oodua People’s Congress has lashed out at a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), for making fraudulent money from the Boko Haram insurgency war and buying choice houses for himself in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
The OPC said the probe of Dambazau was swept under the carpet; otherwise, he would have been exposed as a key sponsor of the Boko Haram terrorism.

Earlier, the former army chief and minister had equated the OPC group and others to the terrorist organisation, Boko Haram.
The OPC President, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi, said Dambazau and his likes should realise that there is no Federal Character in terrorism.

Dambazau Suffering From Acute Dementia, Among Top Four Northern Leaders Who Sponsored Bandits —OPC

He said, “The South-West has never bred any terrorist organisation, least of all OPC. These are people who feel that the tragedy they brought upon their part of the country should be duplicated in the South. But it won’t work, not even with the backing they are giving killer Fulani herdsmen.
“Northern leaders have treated Boko Haram like a pet snake and allowed it to grow stronger instead of killing it once and for all. What they should realise is that there is neither Federal Character nor Quota System in terrorism. The North should call a spade a spade and demand its leaders to bring this ugly Boko Haram insurgency to a close.
“It is no longer a secret that Generals like Dambazau turned the fight against Boko Haram into an ATM. Dambazau and the others exploited the Boko Haram insurgency to amass massive blood money that allowed him to purchase choice houses in places like Abuja, Dubai and the US. His tenure was characterised by several acts of corruption that have been swept under the carpet.”
Afolabi said OPC would continue to partner with security agencies in the South-West to tackle criminals and criminalities.
“A case in point was the last #EndSARS protests. OPC operatives guarded the police stations and prevented several of them from being burnt down. Several Divisional Police Officers, personnel and men are living witnesses to our action on that occasion.
“Where was Dambazau when people were dying for June 12 and democracy? Hundreds of OPC warriors paid the supreme price for the democracy under which Dambazau became Chief of Army Staff (2008 and 2010) and Minister of the Interior (2015 to 2019).”

E2%80%99s-hard-defend-fulani-build-bridges-due-ganduje%E2%80%99s-provocative-statements-%E2%80%93-fani-kayode It’s Hard To Defend Fulani, Build Bridges Due To Ganduje’s Provocative Statements – Fani-Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has said it is hard for him to defend the Fulani in southern Nigeria and to attempt to build bridges between north and south due to alleged provocative statements made by Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
Fani-Kayode lashed at the governor on Wednesday for saying that northerners are over 80 per cent of Nigerian population and “other minority tribes like Igbo and Yoruba should respect them for that.”

Femi Fani-Kayode

Ganduje was also quoted as saying that the “insecurity everybody is talking about is everywhere. Before, Nigerians particularly Igbos and Yorubas used to think that insecurity existed only in the North but today, insecurity in those tribes is on the increase while Igbos and Yorubas are busy agitating for freedom.”
The former minister castigated Ganduje, saying people like him had made building bridges between the north and south difficult due to the governor’s “irresponsible, perfidious and disrespectful statements.”
He said, “For the last few weeks and months, I have been at the forefront of those advocating for the building of bridges and understanding between the regions, zones, tribes, religious faiths and political parties in Nigeria. However statements like Ganduje’s make this appear to be an exercise in futility.
“That we want to keep the peace, build bridges, enhance national unity, re-establish national cohesion and ensure that our country does not end up fighting a second civil war or engage in a second round of fratricidal butchery does not mean that we are weak, cowardly and scared.
“Those of us that have been appealing to them to be restrained and not to perceive every Hausa Fulani person as an enemy are having a very hard time indeed and are more often than not viewed with suspicion and described as collaborators.
“Whilst we are not deterred or concerned about such erroneous and absurd characterisations which are clearly not rooted in truth, any further provocation may have the effect of setting aside reason and rationality and ultimately result in the eruption of a massive cauldron of fire and the release of death, destruction and the dogs of war.
“Let me serve notice to Governor Ganduje and all those that think like him. If you continue to talk like this, we will not attempt to build that bridge of peace anymore but rather we will burn it and damn the consequences.”

Boko Haram Fighters Attack Another Borno Town During Ramadan Prayer

Boko Haram militants in gun trucks have attacked residents who were observing the Ramadan fasting break and prayer in Gajiram town in the Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.
SaharaReporters learnt that some other Muslim faithful were attacked in Damasak in the Mobbar LGA on Tuesday evening.

Security sources stated that on Tuesday around the time to break the Ramadan fast, the terrorists invaded the two towns on a reprisal because the military had killed some of their commanders in the Lake Chad region a week earlier.
“The fighters came at about Ramadan break on Tuesday in order to catch the troops unawares. But the Air Task Force component was on standby to repel them. That was the first day of this year’s Ramadan and the terrorists wanted to destabilise the residents of the two towns,” a security official stated.
“They were on a reprisal over the recent military air bombardments on their strongholds in Tudun Wulgo, Zari, Tumbun Alhaji, Kusuma, Sigir in Ngala and Arijallamari, in Abadam, Marte and Ngala LGAs which resulted in the killing of top Islamic State West African Province leaders.
“Some of the commanders that died in the airstrikes included Mohammad Fulloja, Ameer Mallam Bello, Ba’a kaka Tunkushe, Abu Muktar Al-Ansari, Ameer Abba Kaka, Abu Huzaifa, Ameer Modu Kwayem, while Goni Mustapha who was the Chief Imam of the ISWAP, escaped with bullet wounds,” another source said.
Only on Saturday, Boko Haram fighters invaded Damasak town, burning the United Nations facilities and forcing humanitarian workers to flee for their lives.
SaharaReporters had learnt that the terrorists, aided by their deadlier ISWAP fighters, burnt the UN office and offices at least three other international charity organisations contiguous to the UN facility.

TIMELINE: How Strike Actions Over Hardship, Frustration Are Becoming New Normal Under Buhari’s Government

President Muhammadu Buhari

Industrial actions appear to have become the new normal under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
In 2020, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on over 9 months strike which was eventually called off in December.

President Muhammadu Buhari

One would expect that the Buhari-led government would put in place measures to ensure such does not become the trend for other agencies by promptly addressing their concerns.
However, the reverse has been the case. Since the dawn of 2021, industrial actions have been increasing at an alarming rate.

ASUU Accuses Nigerian Government Of Victimising Its Members Despite Suspending Their Strike

Government agencies that have endured perennial frustrations caused by systemic failures are gradually coming to terms with the fact that protest is the best option to get the attention of the government.
While successive administrations also witnessed industrial actions by labour unions, the frequency of such strikes under the current administration has continued to generate concerns in some quarters.
SaharaReporters examines strike actions that have occurred so far since the beginning of the year.
February 5, 2021: The Leadership of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the non-teaching staff unions of universities started its nationwide strike on February 5, to compel the Nigerian government to address their demands.
The JAC non-teaching staff are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of the Universities (NASU).
The demands included rectifying inconsistencies in the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS), non-payment of arrears of Minimum Wage, delay in renegotiation with government, NASU and SSANU 2009 agreement, among others.
February 18, 2021: The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) directed workers in all the states where the national minimum wage of N30, 000 had yet to be paid to immediately proceed on strike.
Although it did not name the states yet to honour the minimum wage, NLC said about half the 36 states of the federation had yet to conclude negotiations on payment of the minimum wage.
The NLC also demanded a downward review of the template used in determining the pump price of petrol to stave off an imminent hike in the cost of the commodity following the rising price of crude oil in the international market.
The Kano State council of NLC called off its proposed industrial action on April 8, 2021, after accepting the Kano State Government’s decision to revert the salaries of workers for the month of March to the old N18,000 minimum wage.
April 01, 2021: Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) embarked on an indefinite strike, paralysing medical services at public hospitals in Nigeria, leaving hundreds of patients unattended.

Nigeria’s Resident Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike April 1

The Association had earlier given the Nigerian government an ultimatum to improve the wages and allowances of doctors to avert the indefinite strike.
April 6, 2021: Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) announced their strike with the closure of Federal High Courts in different states across the nation. The union said the purpose of the strike is to draw attention to the financial autonomy of Nigeria’s Judiciary.

Judiciary Workers Shut Down Supreme Court As Indefinite Strike Begins

Members of the union said they were on strike to press home their demand for the financial autonomy of the judiciary. JUSUN President, Mr Marwan Adamu, said all courts and other departments would be shut until and unless the government does the needful.
April 6: The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics declared an indefinite strike to demand the implementation of a new salary scheme for polytechnic lecturers.
The union demanded payment of salaries and promotion allowances owed lecturers by some state governments.
The union said it will be open for dialogue with the Nigerian government to resolve the issues raised.
April 13, 2021: Members of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, and Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, in Ogun State were compelled to withdraw their services from public health institutions due to the high-level of insecurity in the country.
In the communiqué issued by the NANNM, dated April 12 and addressed to the Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Tomi Coker, the nurses condemned the lackadaisical attitude of the government towards the release of their colleagues.
The NMA Chairman in the state, Oladayo Ogunlaja, said the strike was a joint resolution between the NMA and NANNM, saying they were going ahead with the strike, despite the release of some abducted colleagues until the government did the needful.
Time will tell whether or not more agencies and workers’ unions will follow suit to press home their demands.

Mountain Of Fire And Miracles Ministries Finally Speaks On Its Court Victories Against Blogger Over Defamation

Pastor Daniel Olukoya, General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM).

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries has described its victory at the United Kingdom High Court of Justice, London, as “tribute to the Lord our God who would never permit evil to triumph over righteousness”.
The Queen’s Bench Division had on Tuesday granted a perpetual injunction restraining Maureen Badejo, a Nigerian blogger who made allegations against the church, from publishing further defamatory words against or concerning the General Overseer, Daniel Olukoya, his family and the church at large.

London Court Grants Order Stopping Woman From Abusive Publications Against Mountain Of Fire Founder, Olukoya

Shortly after the court ruling, the church took to its verified Facebook handle (MFM International Headquarters) to react to the development.
The statement on the social media handle read, “Members and Friends of MFM will recall that from the evening of 20th August 2020, one Maureen Badejo has been having a field day broadcasting all manners of falsehood against this Church, its General Overseer and his family, pastors and members.
“Aspects of those publications which pertained to MFM International and Dr Olukoya were ventilated in a court case before the High Court of Ogun State, Abeokuta in Suit No. AB/407/2020 in which judgment was entered in favour of MFM and our General Overseer.
“Aspects of those broadcasts which pertained to The General Overseer and Mummy GO were filed as a suit in the High Court of London in the Strand, Queen’s Bench Division. In the course of the hearing which was listed at 10.30 am and concluded at 1.05 pm today, April 13, 2021, the evidence was so overwhelming that even Maureen Badejo’s lawyer conceded that her remarks in all those broadcasts were ‘serious and defamatory’.
“Judgment was pronounced today in which the Court granted an order of perpetual injunction restraining Maureen Badejo from publishing defamatory words against or concerning the Plaintiffs and ordered her to pay the legal costs incurred by the Olukoyas in the suit.
“The erudite Judge opined in his judgment thus ‘…it is overwhelmingly clear that the nature of this defamation is severe and serious… and that the number of publications is considerable’.
“Maureen Badejo had filed a counter-claim to demand monies allegedly lost by her from the shutting down of some of her broadcasts by YouTube and Facebook sequel to complaints from Dr Olukoya’s lawyers.
“The Judge in dismissing it as a frivolous claim branded it an abuse of process. The London case will continue for the Court to forensically determine the quantum of damages to be awarded to Dr and Mrs Olukoya for these defamations.
“These victories are a tribute to the Lord our God who would never permit evil to triumph over righteousness.”
Last year, Badejo was accused of using her social media channels to blackmail Olukoya and his church on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. She claimed that Olukoya and his church, the claimants, duped the United States Government by selling his books in the US without paying due tax.
She also alleged that a pastor from MFM in the UK paid £150,000 into the personal account of Mr Olukoya and then went to Nigeria to meet the cleric so he could help him cover up his fraud.
In February 2021, an Ogun State High Court ordered a Badejo to pay ?500 million to the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) and its General Overseer, Olukoya, for defamation.
Abiodun Akinyemi, while delivering the judgment, also ordered Badejo, the proprietor of Gio TV, to pull down and erase the offending online publications concerning the claimants from the internet.
The judge further ordered the blogger to tender a written apology and retraction of the offending publications prominently on social media and at least three national dailies.
“Watching and listening to the broadcasts when demonstrated in open court, I was taken aback at the reckless and defiant attitude of the defendant,” said the judge.
“What was more, it was a phone-in programme in which the defendant even granted audience to the public to make contributions on the information provided by her concerning the claimants.
“I cannot imagine a worse case of reckless defamation or evil use of the internet and social media. Considering the totality of the circumstances of this case, and in particular the conduct of the defendant, I am of the view that the claimants deserve to be substantially compensated in aggravated and exemplary damages.”

Burger King To Open In Nigeria Despite Country’s Economic Challenges

An American multinational hamburger fast-food chain, Burger King, is expected to start its operations in Nigeria by the fourth quarter of 2021.
The company is also expected to employ about 6,000 people (direct and indirect) in the country within five years (2021 and 2026).

This was disclosed recently by Antoine Zammarieh, the Franchisee of Burger King in Nigeria and Managing Director, Allied Food & Confectionary Services Limited.
He was quoted as saying, “Burger King will start operations by Autumn, i.e between September and November 2021. We have set up the Quality Control unit and have met some of our local suppliers to seal the deal. Also, we have sent some of the ingredients to America to test quality.
“As a company, we are delighted to enter this new market being the largest country in Africa and are looking forward to serving our future guests with our world-famous Burger King meals.
“Most importantly, our goal is to positively contribute to the economy by creating more jobs and employment opportunities. In five years, we hope to directly or indirectly employ between 5,000 and 6,000 people in Nigeria.”
According to Zammarieh, Burger King had signed a development agreement for the Nigerian market.
He explained that the development agreement of the chain in Nigeria, which was recently signed, would give more confidence to the Nigerian market and consumers in general, especially during these hard times.
Zammarieh, in an earlier report, had said, “I always believed in Nigeria and its people. I am confident this venture will go a long way and prove successful for Burger King, Nigeria, and our company.”
“I believe this will be a tremendous step towards giving more confidence to the Nigerian market and consumers in general.”
The first outlet of the hamburger chain in Nigeria is expected to be launched in Lagos.
This comes amid concerns over the ease of doing business in Nigeria with several companies opting for neighbouring countries perceived to have a business-friendly atmosphere.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported how the micro-blogging platform, Twitter, chose Ghana over Nigeria despite having more users.

Narrating the incident, Butswat said, “The clash took place in Down Yenagoa. It was a rival cult clash that claimed the life of one person.
“We cannot establish the cult groups that were involved until after arrests might have been made, as an investigation is ongoing,” he said.
Butswat added that the corpse of the person had been recovered and deposited at a morgue.
A resident of Obele, who preferred anonymity said that some suspected cult members armed with dangerous weapons shut down business activities at Amarata and other adjoining areas.
“Their indiscriminate shootings caused panic amongst residents who ran for their lives, while business outfits were compelled to close shops.
“After they had succeeded in creating panic in Amarata area, the hoodlums, who operated with impunity, left the area and stormed Obele where they killed a resident and injured other persons,” the resident said.
