E2%80%94-cacol-demands-probe-2million-n17million ‘Is Oba Of Lagos, Akiolu Operating Bureau de Change?’— CACOL Demands Probe Of $2million, N17million Allegedly Stolen From Monarch’s Palace

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership has called on anti-corruption agencies to investigate the sources of the sums of $2 million and N17 million cash allegedly stolen from the palace of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu.
CACOL on Friday in a release asked if the monarch was operating a Bureau de Change in his palace to have such amounts of money at the time of the #EndSARS protests and invasion.

In a release issued by CACOL Chairman, Mr. Debo Adeniran, the centre noted that the monarch should be quizzed to determine the source of the money allegedly carted away by hoodlums during the #EndSARS protest and why he kept the money in his palace.
The Oba of Lagos had said the sum of $2 million and N17 million were stolen when youths attacked his palace on October 21, 2020, in the violence that erupted after the #EndSARS protest.
“I will support anything that will move Lagos forward. I have appealed to the Federal Government to assist Lagos with what we have suffered. The incident that happened here from October 20th to 23rd is so saddening. The destruction we suffered in Lagos is so enormous than in any other part of the country. Many buildings were burnt, including vehicles used to generate income. I can now say publicly that they stole $2 million and N17 million from my palace,” Akiolu had said.
CACOL in its release on Friday, said, “We heard the news and we were aghast that the Oba of Lagos can have such humongous amount of money right in his palace; the question is; where exactly is the source of that money, which business is he doing that generated that amount of money for him? Is the Oba of Lagos operating a Bureau De Change in his palace?
“Has the palace of the Oba turned to a financial institution of some sort? Is this not violation of some existing laws? Is this not money laundering? We were even more surprised that the Oba of Lagos has the audacity to publicly come out with that amount as what was stolen from his palace.
“It is a widely known fact that many people were impoverished as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Sustaining their daily livelihoods became difficult for many families and households, which is why we found it difficult to believe that a monarch who is supposed to be the custodian of the culture of the people will be in custody of such huge sums of money both in local and foreign currencies when the people living in his domain are living in abject poverty.
“Considering the strategic and critical role of traditional institutions in our society, we are seriously concerned about the enormity of flagrance abuse of their offices and display of opulence that recently characterised our traditional institutions. We therefore call on Anti-corruption agencies to swing into action and immediately investigate the claim by the Oba of Lagos. He should be quizzed to determine the source of the money allegedly carted away by hoodlums during the #EndSARS protest and why he kept the money in his palace.”

E2%80%94-falana I Never Bought Any N6billion Property From Pension Task Force Under Maina— Falana

Femi Falana, SAN.

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has said he never bought any N6 billion property recovered by the defunct Pension Reform Task Force under Abdulrasheed Maina in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as being peddled by some cronies of the government.
Falana explained on Friday that the property, located at 42, Gana Street, Maitama District, Abuja, was rather used as a collateral by the owner for a loan from Bank PHB in 2008.

Femi Falana, SAN.

The SAN added that when the owner of the property defaulted in the payment of the loan, it was taken over by the Asset Management of Nigeria via an order of interim forfeiture and his law firm attempted to buy it but later withdrew.
Falana in a release he signed said he challenged the government to provide proofs that he bought the property for N1 billion as being peddled.
He said, “Sometime in April 2017, an online medium, sponsored by the Federal Government, claimed falsely that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had handed over a property confiscated from a former governor of Bayelsa State, the late Chief D. S. P. Alamieyesigha to me.
“The malicious publication was dismissed when it was revealed that all confiscated properties from the ex-governor had been handed over to the Bayelsa State Government by the EFCC.
“In November 2017, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), alleged that the EFCC had sold one of the houses recovered by Mr. Abdurasheed Maina of the Pension Task Force to “a Lagos lawyer”. Even though Mr. Malami (SAN) did not mention my name, I challenged him to provide details of the property. But the challenge was not taken up.
“When the stories of the illegal acquisition of properties did not fly, the Federal Government alleged before the Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Enquiry that the suspended Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu had transferred N28.5 million to the Account of my law firm. A newspaper that linked me with the false story retracted the story and apologised when I threatened to sue for libel.
“My attention has just been drawn to the renewed version of the lie to the effect that the same property lying and being at 42, Gana Street, Maitama District, Abuja, allegedly recovered by the Pension Reform Task Force was valued at N6,0000,000 but sold to me for N1,000,000 sometime in 2015.
“I wish to say, without any fear of contradiction, that the property in question was never recovered by the Presidential Pension Task Force. It is on record that the property was used as a collateral by the owner, A. Group Properties Limited for a loan from Bank PHB in 2008. When the owner of the property defaulted in the payment of the loan, it was taken over by the Asset Management of Nigeria via an order of interim forfeiture.
“However, in an attempt to liquidate the loan, the owner of the property wanted to sell it. My law firm agreed to buy the property for N250,000,000. But we withdrew from the transaction due to the delay in resolving the case. Up till now, the case is still pending at the Federal High Court.
“In the light of the foregoing, I challenge the Federal Government to proceed to forfeit the alleged N1 billion purportedly paid by me and recover the property if it established that it was recovered by the Pension Task Force.”

How Nigerian Army Tried To Cover Up Attack On UN Hub In Dikwa, Kept Mum On Death Of Soldiers

A few hours after Boko Haram fighters dislodged Nigerian troops in Dikwa, Borno state, and took over the community, army spokesperson, Mohammed Yerima, falsely claimed the attack was repelled by the soldiers.
Yerima in a statement also debunked the reports by some newspapers, including SaharaReporters that the terrorists attacked the United Nations hub.

He described the reports as false and sensational, saying they were clearly aimed at stirring tension in the region and diminishing the glaring efforts and sacrifices of the military in the fight against insurgency.
Yerima had said, “The troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE have decisively routed elements of Boko Haram Terrorists and their Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) counterpart who attempted to infiltrate and attack Dikwa town in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.
“The terrorist groups who stormed the town in an unconfirmed number of gun trucks and motorcycles were visited with heavy bombardment and overwhelming firepower by troops of 81 Task Force Battalion with reinforcement from other formations of the Nigerian Army and aided by air support of Air Task Force Operation LAFIYA DOLE.
“The terrorists attempted to invade the town to loot food items and other logistics having got wind of the recent food distribution to residents of the town by the state governor, Professor Babagana Zulum.
“They came in their droves through the Marte axis but could not gain access to the town due to the combat readiness of troops who were positioned there. The terrorists subsequently lost the initiative as they were cut off completely following the recent successful recapture of Marte town by the gallant troops.
“In desperation and to scare off residents from returning to their homes, they planted series of landmines on the roads which were also detected and successfully detonated by troops.
“Consequently, the Army Headquarters wishes to debunk the unsubstantiated reports on social media suggesting that the terrorists attacked UN Base in Borno, trapping 25 aid workers as published by some outlets.
“Those false and sensational reports are clearly aimed at stirring up tension in the region and diminishing the glaring efforts and sacrifices of the Nigerian military in the fight against insurgency.”
Meanwhile, military sources told SaharaReporters that the insurgents stormed the town around 5:30 pm on Monday and took over the community, while the Nigerian troops retreated to Ajiri, a town under the Mafa Local Government Area of the state.
The insurgents then breached the security of the UN hub in Dikwa and laid siege to the facility, causing humanitarian workers and guests to retreat to hide within the facility.
The gunmen who came with heavy machine guns and trucks, also took possession of the military formation, including high-profile fighting equipment and vehicles.
The group also razed some public buildings, including the primary health care centre, local government secretariat, part of Shehu of Dikwa’s palace, and the UN hub.
The insurgents however pulled out of the town on Tuesday after having control for hours and killing many soldiers.
“About fifteen soldiers were killed by the gunmen, we earlier thought they were five but more than fifteen bodies have been recovered so far. Some civilians were killed as well,” a source told SaharaReporters on Friday.
The attack was also confirmed by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Nigeria, UN-OCHA.
UN- OCHA Coordinator, Edward Kallon in a statement said he was enraged by the attack and was concerned with the safety of civilians and aid workers in the town.
He called for adequate and maximum security of civilians and aid workers in the region.
“I am gravely preoccupied by reports on an ongoing violent attack by non-state armed groups in Dikwa, Borno State, during which several aid facilities were directly targeted. The attack started last night and, as information is still coming through, I am outraged to hear the premises of several aid agencies and a hospital were reportedly set ablaze and sustained damage,” he said.
“I strongly condemn the attack and deeply concerned about the safety and security of civilians in Dikwa, including internally displaced people inside and outside camps and thousands of people who had returned to the community to rebuild their lives after years in displacement.
“The violent attack will affect the support provided to nearly 100,000 people who are desperately in need of humanitarian assistance and protection, particularly as the COVID-19 pandemic risks spreading in Borno State.
“Civilians and aid workers, their facilities and assets should never be a target. They must be protected and respected at all times. I call on all armed parties to immediately stop the violence and respect international humanitarian law and human rights law and ensure the protection 0f civilians, humanitarian and personnel.”
This is not the first time the army would be denying an attack by Boko Haram on Nigerian troops.
In February, Yerima described a report by SaharaReporters titled; “Nigerian Army Keeps Mum As Boko Haram Terrorists Kill ‘20 Soldiers’ In Borno” as false, fake, and baseless.
He said the report was aimed at discouraging the public and demoralising troops in the fight against insurgency.
However, multiple military sources confirmed to SaharaReporters that about 20 soldiers were killed in the attack by the militant group in Malari, Borno State.
The soldiers were said to be on patrol to clear some Boko Haram elements in the area following credible intelligence when they were ambushed by the insurgents.
A senior military officer said the gunmen subsequently engaged the troops with overwhelming firepower, killing about 20 soldiers.
The terrorists also destroyed about three operational vehicles of the Nigerian army.

How APC Chieftain, Danu, Customs Boss Defrauded Nigerian Government Of N51 Billion, Wired N2.5 Billion To Buhari’s Daughter

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Nasiru Haladu Danu and some top officials of the Nigeria Customs Service recently defrauded the Nigerian government of N51 billion, top sources in the agency told SaharaReporters.
Danu is an arrowhead in what is now known in some quarters as President Muhammadu Buhari’s oil mafia group.

SaharaReporters gathered the N51 billion was meant to improve Customs revenue.
A source said the fraud, which implicates the Comptroller General of the NCS, Col Hameed Ali (rtd), was named “Revenue Assurance Fraud” by some officials of the agency.
Another source said N2.5 billion was also transferred to a foundation owned by Buhari’s daughter, Zahra, for which Danu is a signatory.
“Some top Customs operatives and one Alhaji Nasiru Haladu Danu shared N51 billion. N2.5 billion out of the fund was transferred to a foundation owned by President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter.
“Comptroller General Hameed Ali has been on low key since the scandal broke out. They have him by the vice grip,” one of sources said.
In 2019, Danu made headlines when he was arrested at Heathrow Airport, United Kingdom, for an alleged passport scam and money laundering.
SaharaReporters gathered that the Dan Amana Dutse was caught with fake Malta Passport and in his possession, more than £200,000.00 in cash.
Sources said the £200,000.00 which Danu was carrying to give someone in the UK, according to him, was likely meant for Aisha Buhari who was then in London.
In 2019, his flagship company, Casiva was listed among the 15 consortia/companies awarded the 2019/2020 contracts for the exchange of crude oil for imported petroleum products by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.
Danu’s company was also in 2016 awarded contract for the provision of pipeline security and maintenance services along Kaduna-Kano and Zaria-Gusau segments.

Abductors Of Osun Travellers Suspected To Be Fulani, Says Police Commissioner

Osun State Commissioner of Police, Wale Olokode

The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Wale Olokode, has said the suspected gunmen that killed a man and abducted other four passengers along Osogbo-Ibokun Road are of Fulani extraction.
Some gunmen had between 7.30pm and 8pm on Tuesday attacked some commuters near Ajebandele village, killing one and leaving two others injured.

Osun State Commissioner of Police, Wale Olokode

Olokode, who spoke when he featured on a radio programme aired by Rave FM in Osogbo, on Thursday, said those close to the scene of the crime said the perpetrators spoke a language similar to Fulfulde.
The police boss also said the number of people abducted could not immediately be ascertained but added that from the information available to the command, three or four people were kidnapped.
Olokode said, “We do not have the identities of the perpetrators yet, but some people we interviewed said they (gunmen) spoke a language that was not Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba.
“We are suspecting the perpetrators spoke Fulfulde language, but we don’t know until they are arrested. We are resolute in doing that to ascertain who the perpetrators really are. For two days, we have been on their trail.
“We could only see their traces and found phones and slippers of their victims which gave us the assurance that they followed the route we were tracing. And now we have divided ourselves to block the visible area they could use as escape route.”

E2%80%94-yoruba-leaders We’re Not Ready To Go To War With Any Group But We’ll Protect Our Region — Yoruba Leaders

Eminent Yoruba leaders have said the South-West is not ready to go to war with anyone but will do everything within their power to protect the region.
They spoke at a press conference in Lagos organised by the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams; spokesperson for Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, and Sola Lawal.

At the event attended by Chief Ayo Adebanjo and Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the leaders said a stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for March 17 will proffer the next line of action for Yoruba in terms of security and economy.
They disclosed that the the zone will meet in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, for a non-partisan South-West Security Stakeholders’ Group meeting on the said date.
According to Adams, there are different layers by which insecurity can be addressed. This, according to him, necessitated the need for state and non-state actors to work together.
According to him, there is a relationship between good security and buoyant economy. He said, “We are here to represent our leaders and proclaim this campaign. Yes, we have asked people to return to farm, and the next question is how safe are the farms from the onslaught of herdsmen. We are trying to create different layers to address the insecurity– the government layer and the non-governmental layer.
“The government has started mapping out its strategies by creating an Amotekun corps. But we feel that if the strength of the Amotekun cannot complement the effort of the regular security agencies, we should also support them too.
“This meeting is to address the germane issues besetting the Yoruba nation at the moment. We are bringing together all the relevant security groups to back the government and its agencies up through the South-West Security Stakeholders’ Group.
“This will bring the vigilantes, hunters, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Agbekoya and other groups together. We will showcase all the leaders of these groups when we have the Pan-Yoruba Conference on the 17th of March at Mapo Hall, Ibadan.”
On his part, Odumakin said the South-West will not be subservient to any other group or people, adding that the stakeholders’ meeting will provide a practical roadmap for the region.
“They thought we are going to be begging them but nobody is going to do that. Food security has always been with us, they are the ones threatening our land that made food security a challenge for us. We are not out to fight anybody but let nobody think they can intimidate us in our land, or that they can make us submit to fear,” he said.
Also speaking, Lawal said it was only under this kind of umbrella stakeholders’ group can the challenge of insecurity affecting the region be effectively streamlined and addressed, adding that interested individuals and groups cannot be left to do things on their own without coordination.
“The Yoruba nation is not ready to go to war with anyone or any group, but the Yoruba nation is ever ready to defend itself and its property. What we have on the ground is a development that came about as a necessity compelled by the moment,” he said.

Afenifere Condemns Trial Of Seven Yoruba Men, Exclusion Of Hausa, Fulani Suspects In Shasha Incident

The Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has expressed disgust at the charging of seven Yoruba men to court over the recent ethnic clash and killings in the Shasha area of Oyo State.
The Afenifere noted that the trial of only Yoruba suspects in the aftermath of the clash showed partiality in an incident that was a clash between two parties.

The Afenifere Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, stated this, noting that the group demanded an end to the “selective justice that can only provoke more injustices”.
He said, “It is a tragic throwback to three years ago when only the indigenous Ife were arrested in Ile-Ife, Osun State when there was a similar clash between Yoruba and Hausa in the ancient city.
“The police should show more impartiality. Where are the arsonists who burnt down the Yoruba section of the market? Are the Hausa/Fulani above the law? A country cannot go on this way.
“So, the question to ask Nigeria’s unjust system is this; if it was a Yoruba versus Yoruba crisis, where then is the case of the Hausa/Fulani who accused the Yoruba of attacking them and which the Federal Government had allegedly agreed to compensate with billions of naira?

Court Remands Seven Yoruba Men Over Shasha Market Mayhem, Killings

“We demand a halt to this selective justice that can only provoke more injustices. It is laughable that all the Yoruba have been charged for the death of a Yoruba man who was beaten with a charm to death by the Fulani when the fight ensued.”
The suspects arrested by the police include Adekunle Olanrewaju, 38; Olagunju James, 24; Rasaq Yahya, 32 and Olaide Olawuyi, 20.
They were charged with six counts bordering on conspiracy, arson, and murder.
At the Magistrate Court at Iyaganku, Ibadan, Justice I. O. Osho, who did not take the plea of the suspects for want in jurisdiction, ordered the police to return the case file to the Office of the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
Ms Osho adjourned the matter until May 11, for mention.
Earlier, the police prosecution counsel, Foluke Oladosu, told the court that the suspects conspired with others, at large, to commit the offence.
Oladosu explained that on February 12, around 10 am, at Shasha Market, Ibadan, the suspects caused the death of Adeola Shakirudeen, when they beat him up. The police also alleged that the suspects caused the death of 31 others.
The prosecution also alleged that the suspects burnt two houses belonging to Adelabu Ibrahim and caused damages worth N50 million.
The police also alleged that the suspects burnt down a house belonging to Osuolale Akindele and destroyed property worth N20 million.
The offence, the police said, contravened the provisions of sections 6, and 316 and punishable under sections 443 and 319 and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol.II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

Fani-Kayode Beat Me During Pregnancy, Drugged Me, Ex-Wife Tells Court

Precious Chikwendu, a former beauty queen and ex-wife of former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said her ex-husband beat her up on several occasions even while she was pregnant.
She, therefore, demanded full custody of their four sons aged five and three.

Chikwendu made the allegations in an affidavit she deposed to in support of an originating motion brought pursuant to Section 69 of the Child’s Rights Act, 2003.
The case is being presided over by Justice S.C. Oriji of the FCT High Court, Apo, in Abuja.
The ex-beauty queen said she met Fani-Kayode in 2014 at the peak of her career and they soon fell in love and began living together.
She noted that she had four children, including a son aged five and a set of triplets aged three.
She said, “From the early days of our relationship, the respondent (Fani-Kayode) has always maintained a lifestyle of utter disregard to my feelings. This was evident in the way and manner the respondent assaulted me while I was pregnant with our first son.
“The respondent (Fani-Kayode) kicked me several times on my stomach over a petty argument that ensued. It was my friend, Vanessa, who was around at the material time that intervened at the nick of time to save me.
“I had to leave the respondent’s (Fani-Kayode’s) house a few days after this incident. The respondent (Fani-Kayode) repeated the same act when I was pregnant with triplets, this time it was my mother and sister, Faith, that intervened.”
Chikwendu said on one occasion, Fani-Kayode and a former Divisional Police Officer of the Asokoro Police Station drugged her.
She said the ex-minister and her soon became companions and began living together.
She, however, said things soon turned sour as Fani-Kayode began exhibiting signs of paranoia.
The ex-beauty pageant alleged that the former minister accused her of infidelity and on several occasions locked her out of their home located on Aso Drive, Asokoro, Abuja.
She told the court, “Sometime in 2018, in one of my attempts to leave the house with the children, the respondent (Fani-Kayode) in the company of the DPO of Asokoro Police Division, and her team of policemen handcuffed me and stripped me naked while someone from the crowd whom I initially mistook for a policeman forcefully injected me with a sedation.
“That I was then abducted and incarcerated at a hospital for a period of two weeks. I was separated from my six-month-old triplets and a-year-old son at the time.”
Chikwendu, who alleged that the ex-minister had denied her access to her children for several months, asked the court to compel Fani-Kayode to give her a monthly payment of N3.5 million for the upkeep of their four sons.
According to Chikwendu, Fani-Kayode currently spends N1.8 million on food, toiletries and others on the four children every month while N575,000 is spent monthly on clothing.
She said Fani-Kayode had continued to deny her access to the children in order to compel her to return to the marriage.
The ex-beauty pageant alleged that in a bid to spite her, Fani-Kayode had been taking pictures of the children with different women and posting them on social media.
In a response filed by one Oluwafemi Popoola on behalf of Fani-Kayode, the ex-minister said he had not been properly served with the court processes and hence, he could not respond appropriately.
The affidavit Popoola deposed to read in part, “Except there is service or proper service of the originating processes filed in this case on the respondent/applicant, this honourable court will lack jurisdiction to conduct further proceedings.”
In the court documents obtained by SaharaReporters, Fani-Kayode’s ex-wife seeks an order of the court “granting custody of the four children to the applicant but with reasonable right of access to the respondent”.

E2%80%94-aare-ona-kakanfo Zamfara No-fly Zone Directive Shows Nigeria Is At War — Aare Ona Kakanfo

Gani Adams

Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has said the current situation of things in the country is proof that the nation is ‘at war’.
He noted that for the Nigerian government to announce Zamfara state a no-fly zone was an indication of war.

Gani Adams

Gani Adams, who spoke at a press briefing in Lagos on Friday, said a stakeholders’ meeting, scheduled for March 17, will proffer the next line of action for Yoruba in terms of security and economy.
He called on different stakeholders and traditional rulers in the South-West region to participate in the conference.
He said, “When you have certain part of Nigeria’s territory that you cannot fly to for security reason, it is an indication of war and when the drum of war is beating, you have to prepare yourself. We are not saying we want war, but self-defense is not a crime.
“We can’t fold our arms when these criminals show more than 200 AK-47s (and) ammunition, it is an indication of war and anybody that is telling you that no war in Nigeria is deceiving him or herself. If the federal government can announce no flying zone in Zamfara, that was a statement of war.”
He, however, described the recent shoot-on-sight directive given by the Presidency as a welcome development.
He added: “It’s in order, any person with AK-47 in the bush should be shot. As herders, you can move around with cutlass in the bush because you may get to certain place and need to cut some grass but gun without being licensed is a security threat.
“If you allow herders to carry AK-47, you have to allow our farmers to also carry AK-47 because they are both in the same line of profession which is agricultural sector.”

A former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday says he once tested positive for the coronavirus.
Obasanjo disclosed this in Abeokuta while speaking at a colloquium put in place to celebrate his 84th birthday.

The programme was held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta.
He said, “It will surprise you that I was tested positive for covid-19. I called them to come and test me, they came on a Saturday, I didn’t get the result till Wednesday and it came out positive but I didn’t see any symptoms.
“When they came three days after, they tested me and said I was negative, that is three days after I tested positive.
“My daughter, Iyabo, is an epidemiologist and I called her to explain. She said maybe they tested me at the later stage of my being positive.
“I told her I had no symptoms and she said it could be a faulty result. But I was tested positive. Since then I have been tested three times negative, so, if you want to come near me, you can come near me.
“It is nothing to worry about, when I was tested positive, my household were running from me, I told them to stay in their place while I stay in mine.”
