Nigeria Offers To Help Mozambique Fight Terrorism

Nigeria has offered to support Mozambique in its fight against Islamist insurgents in the gas-rich northern province of Cabo Delgado.
More than 2,000 people have been killed and more than 500,000 others displaced in the violence, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, visited Mozambique over the weekend and met Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, the BBC reported on Monday.
Mr Onyeama said Nigeria was ready to share its experience of fighting Islamist militants and provide support to Mozambique.
But observers will question whether it’s best placed to offer advice, given the continued insecurity in Nigeria.
Ironically, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2020, Nigeria is one of the ten countries most impacted by terrorism.
Indeed, Nigeria is the third country most impacted by terrorism. Boko Haram, Nigeria’s deadliest terrorist group, has been responsible for the killing of thousands of Nigerians and the displacement of many others.
At least 36,000 people have been said to have been killed and 2 million displaced since Boko Haram launched its jihadi insurgency in northeast Nigeria in 2009.
In 2016, the group split into two groups — the main faction led by Abubakar Shekau and the other faction affiliated with IS, called Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Additionally, according to the GTI 2020 report, Fulani extremists were responsible for 26 per cent of terror-related deaths in Nigeria at 325 fatalities.
Meanwhile, Mr Onyeama’s visit was part of a diplomatic tour to southern Africa countries to mobilise support for Nigeria’s bid to chair the peace and security council of the African Union (AU).
Tanzania, South Africa and Burkina Faso are also vying for the seat.
Elections will be held during AU’s summit scheduled for later this week.

Nigerian Government Declares Kogi High Risk For COVID-19, Warns Against Visiting State

The Nigerian government has classified Kogi as COVID-19 high risk state because of its failure to acknowledge the existence of the disease, report tests or build isolation centres.
The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 disclosed this on Monday.

PTF also warned Nigerians to be ware of visiting the state.
“We have states where data is not coming forth. If we don’t test, your data will not be analysed and if your data is not analysed, we won’t know the level of the pandemic in your state,” Mukhtar Muhammad, the National Incident Manager of the PTF said.
“Notable among the states that have not been reporting adequately include Yobe, Jigawa, Zamfara and Kebbi and, of course, Kogi that has not been reporting at all.
“States that are not testing are probably at much more higher risk than the states that are currently known as high burdened states.”
For Kogi, which is not conducting tests at all, Muhammad said it is at the “high risk”.
“A state that is not testing at all is an absolute high risk for Nigerians to go there because there is no testing facility and even if you fall sick, there is no isolation centre and they don’t even acknowledge that the disease exists. So for that reason, we put that state at the top of high risk state.”
Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has repeatedly violated social distancing rules, among other protocols that could curb the spread of the virus.
Kogi is one the states where COVID-19 tests are next-to-nil as the governor insists that there is no coronavirus in the state.
Bello in a video widely recently discouraged the use of COVID-19 vaccine, stating that the jabs are meant to kill people.
The governor doubted the authenticity of the vaccine, saying there is no cure for HIV and many other diseases troubling mankind.
“Vaccines are being produced in less than one year of COVID-19. There is no vaccine yet for HIV, malaria, cancer, headache and for several other diseases that are killing us. They want to use the (COVID-19) vaccines to introduce the disease that will kill you and us. God forbid,” he said.
“We should draw our minds back to what happened in Kano during the Pfizer polio vaccines that crippled and killed our children. We have learned our lessons.
“If they say they are taking the vaccines in the public allow them take their vaccines. Don’t say I said you should not take it but if you want to take it, open your eyes before you take the vaccines.”
In his New Year broadcast, Bello said it would be irresponsible of his government to see COVID-19 as a definer of 2020.
He said Kogi would not respond to the second wave of the virus with “mass hysteria”.
The governor had also asked the Nigerian government to focus more on reviving the economy than on how to procure COVID-19 vaccines.

Nigerian Footballer Jailed In India For Possessing Drugs In Commercial Quantity

A court in Panaji, India has sentenced a Nigerian footballer, Amachukwu Okeke, to 10 years imprisonment for possessing narcotics in commercial quantity.
Okeke was also fined Rs 1 lakh (about N520,000) under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).

The court submitted, “…prosecution has succeeded in proving that the report of the expert confirms presence of LSD in the exhibits and that it was commercial quantity,” the court held.
Times of India reported that Okeke had earlier been arrested after he was caught with Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) liquid worth Rs 2.7 lakh, in Siolim, in 2015.
The court reportedly gave him the minimum penalty required for possessing commercial quantity of narcotics.
The counsel for the accused argued that Okeke is a footballer and has a few years to play and earn a livelihood for his family and is not convicted by any other court, but was falsely implicated by Kochi police in some other case.
The court noted that this was his second case. He was arrested in 2005 for possessing cocaine, but was acquitted by the court. When released on bail, he left the state and was involved in another drug case filed before Chennai police, where investigation is going on.
Counsel for the accused, M D’Souza, argued that the substance is liquid and could not be weighed in grammes and there was no authorisation to investigate into the matter and the investigating officer did not attach the accused’s clothes.
Public prosecutor, Anna Mendonza, submitted to the court that the substance seized was commercial quantity LSD and the investigating officer complied with the NDPS Act.

Bandits Raid Kaduna Communities, Kill three, Kidnap Many, Including Women, Children

File Photo

Some bandits have attacked Giwa and Zango-Kataf local government areas of Kaduna, killing three persons and injuring three others.
Mr Samuel Aruwa, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, said in a statement on Monday that those injured are Fidelix Jacob, Abraham Isah and Philemon Adamu.

File Photo

According to Aruwa, security agents recovered two AK-47 rifles with over 40 rounds of ammunition from two persons in the area amid the insecurity in the area.
He said, “The security agencies added that two AK 47 rifles were recovered along with over 43 rounds of ammunition from two individuals, Malachi Akut and Gabas Gaje. They were immediately arrested for further interrogation.”
But he added that the two suspects were allowed to escape by some youths in the area who protested against their arrest.
Aruwa also noted that though scores of bandits were killed by the Air Component of Operation Thunder Strike in Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Igabi and Chikun local government areas of the state, dozens of villagers, including women and children were kidnapped by bandits.
Aruwa, who was quoting security operatives, also said bandits attacked Garawa village in Fatika District, Giwa Local Government Area, killing one Alhaji Saadu and kidnapping some others. He noted that the bandits also kidnapped some residents of Doka village in Fatika District, also in the same local government area.
He said, “In Angwan Dan Yaya village of the same district, one resident Alhaji Suleiman Audu was shot dead by armed bandits.”
On the military operation, he said, “Air platforms conducted armed reconnaissance over Sabon Birnin, Rikau, Kaya, Kerawa, Galadimawa, Fatika, Kidandan, Saulawa, Dogon Dawa, Ngade Allah, Kuduru, Yadi, Damari, Takama, Sabuwa, Ungwar Yako and its connecting track to Kuduru, as well as the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari Road all of Birnin Gwari, Chikun, Igabi and Giwa local government areas.
“According to the operational feedback to the Kaduna State Government, Rikau was observed to be active with bandits. The location was engaged accordingly with several bandits neutralised.
“Similarly, about 3km southeast of Saulawa, bandits were seen fleeing from the air raid with herds of cattle. They were engaged and neutralized.
“Ground troops at Dogon Dawa and Sabon Birni reported a calm situation. All other areas covered were likewise calm with no suspicious activity observed.
“In a subsequent mission, armed reconnaissance was conducted over Kampanin Doka, Maganda, Farin Ruwa, Nachibi, Kwasakwasa, Sabon Kuyello, Sabon Layilasan and environs.
“At Maganda, two bandits were engaged and neutralised as they tried to escape the notice of the fighter jet crew.
“Ground troops reported bandit activities at Gatarawa, close to Rumana. While the crew did not establish clear contact, the location was strafed with probing shots into the dense vegetation.
“Normal activities were observed along the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari road and other locations covered.”
Governor Nasir El-Rufai has expressed concern about the killings and kidnappings, the commissioner also said.
“Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed sadness at the report and prayed for the repose of the soul of the dead while wishing the injured speedy recovery.
“The governor frowned on the disruption of security operation and further directed security agencies to proceed with thorough investigations into the attack and subsequent protests.
“Investigations into the incidents are in progress,” the commissioner said.

E2%80%94-medical COVID-19: Despite Risking Our Lives, Some Nigerian Doctors Borrow To Pay School Fees — Medical Practitioner

Illustration

A medical doctor in a tertiary hospital in Nigeria has bemoaned the salary scale of health workers in the country, especially at a time when the world is battling with the COVID-19 pandemic.
He alleged that doctors who are front-line health workers earn almost nothing compared to staff members of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Illustration

He told SaharaReporters that people in the companies who do “almost nothing” earn a lot of money as salary and other extra bonuses such as the 13th month while doctors get none of such.
He said, “Before the pandemic, the hazard allowance for a health worker in Nigeria was just N5, 000, very poor. When the pandemic started, we had to negotiate a revised hazard allowance which the government paid for three months. The revised hazard allowance was just 50% of our basic salary and we received this hazard allowance for three months — April, May, June last year. They then returned to paying N5, 000 as hazard allowance, even till now.
“The basic salary for a medical doctor in some of the tertiary hospitals ranges from between N240, 000 to N450, 000 and it takes like 5 to 7 years to get to the level where you can earn N450, 000. Our remuneration is very poor, especially in this pandemic.”
He explained that the rate of brain drain is high among Nigerian medical doctors to other countries due to the welfare packages available for doctors in those countries compared to the situation in Nigeria.
“When you go to other countries, you see the welfare packages they have for their doctors working during the pandemic. They even work shifts because they don’t want them to be exposed and they pay them more and not only that, social welfare packages are included, incentives that we as doctors in Nigeria do not have. That’s why you see a large number of doctors migrating to countries like Saudi Arabia, UK, and many other countries that treat us better than Nigeria.
“Doctors get exposed daily to COVID-19 patients yet our hazard allowance is just N5, 000. We know it’s a service to humanity but we have families that we have to take care of. The average doctor in Nigeria is not well paid. There are doctors that are being owed salaries, like our colleagues in some states like Ondo, Kogi, Abia states.
“Remuneration for an average Nigerian doctor is very poor and our junior colleagues who are coming up just want to leave this country. Some of us who decided to stay back are beginning to regret it because in the United Kingdom, by the time you work for two years, you can take a mortgage and get your house, and a car but in Nigeria, what can a doctor who has worked for 2 years show for it? I can tell you some of my colleagues who started work two years ago, without a car have not been able to afford a car even as at now.
“The doctor does not go to the market and the price of things get lower. The inflation in the economy has affected everyone. Can a doctor really afford to pay the exorbitant school fees for a child in private universities? How many doctors can afford to do that? They have been living from hand to mouth.
“And then we have people who work in some government parastatals that are paid for doing almost nothing, they say they are income generating agencies e.g CBN, NNPC. I think we need to ask people who work in such places what they earn and the criteria, the basis on which they earn those amounts of money. The government does not pay 13th month to doctors but people in these agencies get paid for 13th month and in the beginning of the year, they pay them a lump sum, they call it different kinds of allowance, but the doctors do not get that. This is a country where we manage life, work every day, until you decide to go on leave. In some hospitals, you can’t even go on leave because they are short-staffed.
“Our remuneration is very poor. In the United States, someone who just finished from medical school, an intern, earns close to $4, 000 (about N1.5 million), when he becomes a consultant, that salary can be increased to $12, 000 (about N4.5 million) in a month. That’s a verifiable fact.
“In the UK, if you are not a resident doctor, you can earn as much as £4, 000 (about N2.1 million) to £6, 000 (about N3.1 million) although after tax it may reduce and if you are a consultant, you can earn as high as £10, 000 (about N5.2 million). When you compare our pay to that of doctors in other countries, you’ll discover we are underpaid and that’s why those countries want Nigerian doctors.”
He stated that the Nigerian system is short-changing itself by underpaying medical doctors who get discouraged and leave the country.
He said the country trains doctors at a subsidised rate and rather than enjoy the dividends, it discourages the doctors who go on to serve other countries.
“I attended a private university, let me say I paid so much but there are some people who paid about N10, 000 per year to train as doctors in Nigeria some years back. There is no country in the world that does not spend an average of $15, 000 (about N5.7 million) to train a medical doctor. In the UK, medical training is very expensive. That’s why you see many Indians, Pakistani and Nigerian doctors in the UK because they discourage their people from doing medicine as it’s expensive but in Nigeria, we train cheaply
“We train our doctors and then they go to work in other countries. Nigeria is cheating herself. If you pay N500, 000 in Nigeria yearly to train as a doctor, it is still subsidised compared to what they pay elsewhere and when you want to give back to your own country, you are discouraged.
“People who train in Ukraine, Arabian countries and so on pay a lot yet it is still way cheaper to train in those countries than in the UK.  What we want to fight for is for hazard allowance paid to us as COVID hazard allowance should continue. Giving us half of our basic salary as hazard allowance should continue.
“Nigerian doctors go through a lot in terms of remuneration. There are doctors who borrow to pay their children’s school fees, there are doctors that if they don’t get paid at the end of the month, they are close to penury.
“This is almost unbelievable but that is the situation the Nigerian doctor has found himself.”

BREAKING: Many Injured As Nigerian Army Attacks UNIABUJA Students Protesting Hike In Tuition Fee, Others

Operatives of the Nigerian army have attacked students of the University of Abuja staging a peaceful protest against hike in tuition fee and other issues at the entrance of the school.
SaharaReporters gathered that the soldiers fired tear gas at some of the peaceful protesting students and used batons to pummel others.

“Nigeria is now a country full of tyranny. The Vice-Chancellor brought armed soldiers to disrupt a peaceful protest by unarmed Nigerian students. When did protest become a crime in Nigeria? We won’t take this,” a student told SaharaReporters.
The students had earlier blocked the main campus gate in the Giri area of the Federal Capital Territory, over the increment of their tuition by the school authorities.
The students, led by their union executives, displayed various placards, saying the school authorities led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Rasheed Na’Allah, increased tuition by over 100 per cent.
They therefore described the increment as insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.
On social media, the students have created #EndUniabujaOppression, calling on the school management to rescind its decision and open the portal for students to register.
UNIABUJA Students Protest School Fees’ Increment, Tackle VC For Closing Portal | Sahara Reporters The students displayed various placards, saying the school authorities led by the Vice-Chancellor increased tuition by over 100 per cent. READ MORE: pic.twitter.com/J7fO8oMPzX— Sahara Reporters (@SaharaReporters) February 1, 2021

One of the Students’ Union Government leaders explained why the students embarked on the protest.
He said, “Sometime in late 2019, rumours were going around about a purported increase in school fees at the university. As a proactive SUG, led by Aluta Famous, enquiries were made in which the VC, Prof. Na’Allah, blatantly denied any possible increment and so there wasn’t much to do by the SUG.
“Some days after, students kept complaining about the fees on their portals and this prompted the SUG to meet with the VC again. This time around, the VC didn’t deny but intimated the SUG about an agreement reached with their predecessors (led by Aluta Standard) on the increment.
“The SUG was disappointed about the development and couldn’t come to terms with why their predecessors could have agreed to the increment, taking into consideration the fact that the fees had just been increased a year before then.
“However, the SUG pleaded for reduction, only for the management to say some students had already started paying and that the money could not be refunded. Not only that, the management also insisted on giving a deadline for payment and registration, an act that’s alien to the students’ community since the previous management had always given students the grace of paying as late as in the second semester.
“This sudden increment and refusal to be considerate and sensitive enough to show empathy to struggling students has led some students to drop out because they could not meet up financially. True to his word, the VC closed the portal for payment. Then, there was the pandemic break and a strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. Since there was news of possible resumption and examination dates set, SUG has been pleading for the portal to be reopened so as to allow students to register.
“In light of this, we are calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to come to University of Abuja students’ aid and not allow this obvious oppression and intimidation of students to go without a proper redress. Our future is at stake and we won’t fold our hands and watch as it is being delayed.”
On many occasions, men of the Nigerian Army have been accused of various forms of human rights violations by Nigerians and international actors such as Amnesty International.
In 2015, over 330 Shia sect members in different locations controlled by their leader Sheikh Ibrahim El- ZakyZaky in Zaria, Kaduna State were killed by soldiers.
The army claimed its confrontation with the Shiites who had erected a makeshift roadblock near a mosque resulted from an assassination attempt on former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, whose convoy was passing by.
Amnesty International had also accused soldiers of raping female internally displaced persons (IDPs) in exchange for food and killing hundreds in detention.
An unconfirmed number of peaceful #ENDSARS protesters were also killed by soldiers at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.

Sunday Igboho: Aggrieved Igangan Youths Welcome Makinde With Placards

Aggrieved youths in Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Council Development Area of Oyo State, welcomed the governor of the state, Seyi Makinde, with placards asking him to do more about insecurity in their area.
According to The PUNCH, Makinde arrived in the area on Sunday evening, held meetings with stakeholders in a bid to find a lasting solution to the herdsmen crisis rocking the area.

On Monday, youths in the community greeted the governor with several placards shortly before another meeting.
Some of the inscriptions on the placards read: ‘End Farmers Bloodshed in Igangan’, ‘Fulani Must Stop Raping Our Women’, ‘Ibarapaland Not Fulani RUGA’, ‘No More Seriki, No More Carnage’, ‘Stop Fulani Massacre Of Ibarapa People’.

The youths also displayed photos of victims, including that of Fatai Aborode, a returnee cum farmer who was allegedly killed by Fulani herders because they wanted to drive him away from where he had his farm.
The Convener, Igangan Development Advocates, Oladiran Oladokun, said the inscriptions on the placards contained the specific demands of the people of Igangan and Ibarapaland.
Popular Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho), had asked Fulani herdsmen, largely blamed for perpetrating crimes in the area, to leave Ibarapa within seven days.
At the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum, Igangan residents, emboldened by Igboho’s presence, had ejected the Seriki Fulani of Igangan, Abdulkadir Saliu, and some others out of the rustic town.
The residents of the town also vowed never to allow Saliu and his men return to the community.

E2%80%94-sunday-igboho Ogun Government Invited Us To Fight Fulani Killers, Kidnappers — Sunday Igboho

Popular Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho), has said the Ogun state government invited him and his group to fight banditry and kidnapping in the state.
Igboho stormed Ogun community, Oja Odan, on Monday with his group, promising to put an end to every form of kidnapping and killing by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the state.

Meanwhile, Remmy Hazzan, Special Adviser on Public Communications to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, had earlier said Igboho, was welcome in the state.
He was quoted as saying, “Anybody who is hoping to help us with the security situation is welcome. Not only Sunday Igboho, whoever has what it takes to help us get security right is welcome in Ogun State.”

On Monday, Igboho, when speaking with journalists, revealed that he was going to Yewa North Local Government Area in Ogun State, a place believed to be under siege from Fulani herdsmen.
Addressing the crowd that gathered to speak with him at Oja Odan, Igboho said, “We have come to Ogun State to rescue our people from the activities of Fulani herdsmen.
“We learnt that Fulani kidnappers are disturbing our people in this state; kidnapping them, raping them. This is our land, this is our nation, Yoruba nation, enough is enough, we don’t want Fulani kidnappers anymore.
“The Ogun State government invited us and that’s because the government is good. The governor of this state is a good man; he has shown that he loves his people. He knows that the poor are suffering and is ready to protect them. He identified that the same people he is governing over are those that are being killed and kidnapped.
“Our people can’t come home; the kidnappers have made our expressways unsafe for us. All the elders of Yorubaland and every one of us; we are not happy with what is happening. We are going into the bush to see those who are threatening our people. We don’t want herdsmen again; we want to send them away.”

Opposition Leader, Bobi Wine Challenges Uganda Election Results In Court

Bobi Wine

Ugandan opposition leader, Bobi Wine, on Monday filed a Supreme Court challenge seeking cancellation of the results of a presidential election that handed victory to incumbent Yoweri Museveni, his party’s lawyer has said.
Museveni, a former guerrilla leader who has led the East African country since 1986, was declared winner of the January 14 election with 59% of the vote, while Wine was given 35%.

Bobi Wine

USNews

“We want the poll cancelled and repeated,” said George Musisi, lawyer for Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP).
According to Reuters, Wine, 38, a pop star and lawmaker, rejected the results and said he believed his victory was stolen.
Musisi said Wine was asking the court to overturn the results on several grounds, including widespread use of violence.
“There was outright ballot-stuffing, there was intimidation of NUP agents and supporters, some were arrested on the eve of the election, there was pre-ticking of ballots,” he said.
The filing showed the judiciary could be trusted to adjudicate over the dispute fairly, Museveni’s National Resistance Movement party told Reuters, adding the petition did not have much chance of succeeding.
“Kyagulanyi is trying to give his supporters a soft landing but inside himself he knows he lost genuinely,” said Rogers Mulindwa, NRM’s spokesman.
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, used his youthful energy and a widespread Ugandan love of music to build a large following among young people and present a formidable challenge to Museveni.
On the campaign trail, which Wine once described as a “war zone”, he was forced to wear a bulletproof vest and a ballistics helmet for safety reasons.
To keep a lid on Wine’s support, authorities responded with a violent crackdown. His rallies were routinely broken up with bullets, beatings, teargas and detentions.
Wine was himself on various occasions prevented from appearing on radio talk shows during campaigns and blocked from going to certain parts of the country to canvass for votes.
Uganda’s judiciary has over the years drawn criticism from the political opposition and some human rights activists for alleged partisan rulings in high-profile political cases.
Challenges to the results of all the four previous elections won by Museveni have been dismissed by the supreme court.
In the rulings, most judges acknowledged the elections were marred by irregularities, but said those irregularities could not have affected the election’s ultimate result in a substantial manner.
