The Miracle Of Kankara, Cows And Snakes By Achike Chude

Achike Chude

Hurray! Our boys have been brought back safe and sound – all 344 of them. They were suddenly kidnapped by bandits on the 11th of December 2020 from their school, Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State, North West, Nigeria. The kidnap was attributed to the bandits, one of the violent set of people plaguing the north.
But Boko Haram is not pleased that we ascribed the kidnap of hundreds of our young secondary school boys to the kidnappers. They feel insulted that ‘ordinary bandits’ would be credited with kidnapping more people than they did in 2014 and 2018 when 276 and 110 Chibok and Dapchi girls were kidnapped. So, to correct this false narrative, they boldly announced that they, and not bandits were responsible for the kidnapping. But the army and the government suggested that they were lying. And this is rather confusing. Many Nigerians believe that If the Boko Haram people are liars, then the government is also a liar, perhaps a bigger liar. Was it not the government through the president, presidential spokesman, Minister of Information and Chief of Army Staff that told Nigerians at different times that Boko Haram had been technically defeated, degraded, incapacitated, pulverised, and annihilated? Was it not the army that told us how many times Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram leader was killed?
The army and government are yet to tell us exactly how they performed the wonderful feat of rescue after many of the boys escaped by themselves at different times and returned home. This is before the 344 were ‘rescued’. The whole thing is so confusing, perplexing, mind buggling, and befuddling. Everybody was involved in the situation one way or the other – bandits, Boko-Haram, and even Miyeti Allah, who people accuse of being the killer herdsmen or the power behind the herdsmen. But we must praise all the those who were involved in resolving the crisis as they cooperated and coordinated with one another. As the crisis unfolded, the state government talked to the federal government, the federal government talked to the army, the army talked to the herdsmen, the herdsmen talked to Boko-Haram, Boko-Haram talked to the bandits, and the bandits brought back the boys through the army. Or is it the other way round? But regardless, what is critical is that the boys are back and we are glad.

Achike Chude

And to make the whole matter even sweeter, the government says that not one single kobo was paid to the bandits or Boko-Haram or whichever group was involved. Some bad belle Nigerians do not believe that bad bandits and bad Boko-Harams could become good bandits and good Boko-Harams overnight and release the kidnapped boys out of the goodness of their hearts. After all, what of the thief on the cross during the crucifixion? Did he not repent in the very last minute? What if the consciences of the bandit kidnappers were pricked and they felt sorry for their sins and wayward ways and decided to change?
Perhaps they had heard that Lai Muhammed, Garba Shehu, and Femi Adesina were all in tears and decided to ‘sorry for them.’ as Nigerians would say. Still, these bad belle Nigerians will not believe. They have reminded us how Lai Muhammed, the Minister of Information, told us in 2018, how the Dapchi girls were released free of charge by the nice Boko-Haram terrorists after the federal government begged them and talked to them nicely.
At first it sounded too good to be true, but we reluctantly decided to believe Lai Muhammed, especially since he once told us on national television that he has never told a lie in his entire life. And that story subsisted until that nosy, busybody international organization, the United Nation decided to embarrass Lai by telling us that Nigeria paid a large sum of money in dollars to the terrorist Boko-Haram for the release of the girls. And what did Boko-Haram do after receiving payment? They simply went to the market, bought heavier and more deadly weapons, improved their logistics and  began to kill more of our soldiers and people through more daring and brazen attacks. I truly hope that this time around, it is the ‘abeg’ and pleas from the government that led to the release of the boys and not dollars, otherwise there will be more kidnappings and killings and more settlement by the government that will lead to more kidnappings that will to even more settlement that will lead to yet another kidnapping and more………. You know it.
But come to think of it! Is it that these bandits are so thoughtless, or foolish, or fearless that they would visit the lion so rudely in his den? How could they have dared to strike or carry out their terrible attack at the exact time the President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria’s Armed Forces was in his home state, Katsina?
How dare they put their hands in the scorpion’s hole and believe that they would get away with it? Dem no dey fear? A president that had dared the National Assembly when he refused to answer their invitation to talk about the same insecurity in the country. A president that no longer bothers to talk to Nigerians about the things that are uppermost in their minds.
But truly, times have changed. These bandits have been poking their fingers into the president’s eyes for so long now and ‘nothing spoil.’ Heaven did not fall! They have been operating freely for some time in the president’s own state, not to talk of other parts of the country and there have not been consequences. Maybe it was good that the president decided to ignore them and rather chose to visit his cows while in Katsina State. Nothing annoys a man or woman more, who is seeking attention by trying to openly embarrass you and you absolutely ignore such a fellow.
One of the primary objectives of the terrorists is to change our way of life. The president did not allow them to change his. In spite of the kidnapping, he still went ahead to visit his cows, to determine their state of health and wellness. And to perhaps show loyalty, the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai whose men were also engaged in the pursuit of the bandits also did not abandon his snake farm.
At least he has shown that what the president can do, he can also replicate. He was reported to have paid his snakes a visit to be sure that they were also in good health. There were even pictures of him on social media holding a massive snake, a broad smile on his face.
Or perhaps there was something the president and his Chief of Army Staff knew that the rest of us did not know. Anybody who heard or knew about the famous Octopus Paul, the sea Animal who accurately predicted world cup football matches would know that animals can be very omniscient and prophetic. In the 2010 world cup, before each designated  match and during divinations, Octopus Paul predicted hundred percent, the winner, right down to the team that won the world cup final.
Like Octopus Paul, who says that President Muhammadu Buhari and his Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai did not have accurate divinations from their animals that the Kankara boys were safe and would be returned safely and that there was therefore, no need to fret and panic. If that were so, were they not proved right?
But seriously, this insecurity has gotten out of hand. We just cannot continue like this. If people do not know this by now, they should know that we are all in danger, whether we are in the north or south. Where is our Commander-in- Chief?

The Court System, Another SARS By Sesugh Akume

Sesugh Akume

After years of outcries and calls for the notorious Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) to be scrapped, with the rogue outfit purportedly shut down for the fourth time this year, a final showdown weeks ago brought matters to ahead leading to the fatalities of scores with the murder of unarmed, organised, civil protesters at the Lekki tollgate on 20 October 2020.
SARS (which is still lowkey operational, not entirely scrapped as claimed) is a metaphor for Nigeria’s dysfunction characterised by bad governance, gross impunity and lawlessness, unprofessionalism and incompetence, unbridled corruption, low IQ and mental retardation, and everything one would never expect of a police unit, much less the policing system of any real country. Sadly, this is what the court system in Nigeria is, save for the physical murder,  arbitrary arrests and illegal detention, extortion at gun point, etc. But in effect, it is actually the same, if not worse.
The Nigerian court system is slow, archaic, and certainly not designed or intended for the everyday Nigerian. It is more a court of law than a court of justice.
It is expensive and not accessible. Aside from having to pay for the services of lawyers, everything else is paid for, both for legitimate and under-the-table payments, even for things ordered by the the court itself. The other day, at the Federal High Court, Abuja after a matter was adjourned and the court ordered for a hearing notice to be served to the other parties notify them of the new date, demands were made both to get the hearing notice and to ‘mobilise’ the bailiff to serve it. Asking for money for a hearing notice to be issued (forms already provided, all the officials do is to fill them) was a new low.
This is an insensitive, insular system where court registrars would not deign to send simple 4 naira text messages to reschedule court sittings. Lawyers (senior advocates inclusive) travel all the way, including from out of town (along with the associated costs) only to be told that the court wouldn’t be sitting! Changes in plan that are usually not emergencies or impromptu but known well ahead.

Sesugh Akume

There are all manner of dirty extortionary practices one would least expect from a Temple of Justice. The officials there don’think so. The court is to them just like any other place hustlers use as their grounds to earn a buck. They see nothing sacred about it. It’s normal. A complaint I wrote to the chief registrar of the Federal High Court on corrupt practices I witnessed at the Federal High Court Makurdi, which are in clear breach of what the court itself has made public, since 7 October, hasn’t as much as been acknowledged. I wrote again in reminder and to complain about it a month later, nothing came of it. If my hands weren’t full at this time, the impunity of the chief registrar, Emmanuel Gakko, would have been addressed. But it’s never too late.
I was shocked to a stupour when confronted with the reality at close range, of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the highest court in the land, which has absolutely no regard for the laws of the land. I made a Freedom of Information (FOI) application to know the status of Martins Alo v Speaker, Ondo House of Assembly, filed since 2018, and got no response at all, whereas the law says it must answered in 3 days or at worst 7 days. Two weeks later I wrote a reminder/complaint letter, again to no avail, eliciting may lawsuit against the Supreme Court and the chief registrar, Hadizatu
Mustapha (FHC/ABJ/CS/1161/2020). No lessons were learnt when I again, made an FOI request on the status of Andrew Osakue v EDOCASA, also filed since 2018, leading to a second lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1491/2020).
Both are landmark cases challenging the impunity of subnational (state and local) governments denying the people access to public records of their own government. These have not been attended to since 2018, but elitist cases commenced at the lower courts began a year later have gone all the way to the Supreme Court and determined. What does it says about the system?
When I eventually got the replies all I could do was shake my head. The Court there is no uniform standard for referencing its letters, the dispatch date on one of them is a wrong one, they even start sentences with small letters, and others blunders too embarrassing to say. And this is supposed to be the highest court in the land!
Space limits me from going into the practice and conduct of judges that rather tend to hamper the course of justice. Or the system’s deliberate resistance to adopting technology to ease the work and make it more efficient, therefore more timely (as justice delayed is justice denied). Or the seeming disposition of judges waiting for government lawyers to say any foolish thing at all so that they would rule in their favour.
There are institutions set up to regulate society and make it liveable for us all. Leading this category, in my view, is the court system. It is intended to be the last hope of the ‘common man’, but in Nigeria it isn’t so in practical terms. Social media seems the last hope of the everyday citizen. In fact, I’ve seen where the police took to Twitter to report the army! Government officials and agencies have been on each other’s necks repeatedly on social media. It appears social media isn’t the last resort of the everyday person alone. It shouldn’t be so. This dysfunction won’t last forever. Something must eventually give.
Like Omoyele Sowore or not, like #RevolutionNow or not, it will come. The question is how do we prefer it? In 1962, John F. Kennedy, the 35th US president, famously said, ‘Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.’ It’s either the court system and entire law enforcement and justice system reforms itself into a decent sector that offers equity, justice, and fairness; real value and timely, or continues being rogue. When the consequences come some day, and they will, none of us will like the outcome.

E2%80%99-abduction-award-winning-drama-%E2%80%93-ohanaeze-youth-council Schoolboys’ Abduction, An Award-Winning Drama – Ohanaeze Youth Council

The Igbo socio-cultural youth organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, has said the recent abduction of over 300 schoolboys at the Government Science School, Kankara, Katsina State, and their rescue, is the government’s award-winning drama of the year.
The Igbo youths stated in a release that they wondered if the drama was to make the military chiefs look “capable or to silence the public outcry of sacking the service chiefs from office.”

In a statement, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, scolded the northern leaders for their failure in governance and their profiteering from the “huge budgetary allocations mapped out for insecurity challenges in their region.”
Isiguzoro said, “The apex Igbo socio-cultural youth organisation describes the recent abduction in GSS Kankara as the award-winning drama for the year, 2020. Igbo youths wonder the rationale and idea behind the drama; was it to make the service chiefs appear capable? Or was it to resist the idea of sacking the service chiefs from office?
“The evidence of the provision of new blankets for over 300 pupils of Kankara by the Boko Haram insurgents makes the abduction fake  and the organisers of the drama as amateurs.
“The northern leaders have refused to accept their leadership failures in governance; most of their political leaders are behind the insecurity situation in the north, and they are benefiting immensely from the huge budgetary allocations mapped out for insecurity challenges. The Kankara boys’ abduction is business as usual for the northern leaders.”

Katsina Abduction: Buhari Treating Insecurity With Levity, Northern Groups Say

President Buhari in Daura.

A Coalition of Northern Groups has again criticised President Muhammadu Buhari over his inability to secure the northern region from bandits, kidnappers and terrorists.
The spokesperson for the Coalition, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, disclosed this while reacting to the release of over 300 students kidnapped from the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.

President Buhari in Daura.

According to Suleiman, many farmers in the region have abandoned their farmlands uncultivated due to insecurity.
The statement partly reads, “At the risk of overstating the case, we can unhesitatingly assert that the daring theft of more than 300 students from one point, at the same hour, represents the height of the most serious social and security challenges facing the North today.
“The fact that the Kankara abduction, carried out right under the nose of the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian armed forces also came with tell-tale signs of a possible influence of the Boko Haram insurgents, is the more reason why it should be seen as an existential matter that needs to be addressed, tackled robustly and defeated once for all.
“A situation where dangerous security challenges such as the ones we are faced with, are being treated with levity and condescension by the President  is certainly unacceptable.
“No people can aspire to greatness or seek to remain secure and safe when its entire population, particularly the youth and farming communities that represent the productive segments of society, are exposed to such level of danger in the hands of murderous gangs of criminals who operate at will and with ease.
“We at the CNG, therefore, see this not as a moment for celebration alone but as a starting point for a vigorous struggle for a sustained collective action to ensure a conclusive pronouncement of victory with total disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration.”
The CNG warned the northern governors to confront the surging insecurity collectively, adding that their failure to do so would make the situation more complicated and with ripple effects.
“To Mr President and the federal authorities, we say, problems are there to be solved or alleviated and never to be shied away from. They must, therefore, either recommit to act to solve this challenge quickly as a matter of the most urgent consideration, or tow the decent path of integrity by admitting failure and giving a chance for self-protection,” it noted.

Gunmen Kidnap Mother Of Osun AAC Spokesperson, Demand N10m Ransom

Mrs. Elizabeth Mojisola Adefila

Gunmen, believed to be kidnappers, on Wednesday, abducted passengers of a public transport in Benin, Edo State.
One of the victims is Mrs. Elizabeth Mojisola Adefila, the mother of  the spokesperson for the African Action Congress in Osun State, Mr. Dayo Adefila.

Mrs. Elizabeth Mojisola Adefila

SaharaReporters gathered that the passengers were heading for Osun State from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, before the gun-wielding kidnappers waylaid the vehicle in which they were travelling.
A source told SaharaReporters that the kidnappers had reached her family and demanded N10m ransom.
The source lamented that the family begged the kidnappers that they could not pay the ransom.
“Madam Mojisola Adefila was one of the passengers. She was returning from Uyo by public transport. The incident most probably occurred around 4 pm as calls to her line did not go through.
“The kidnappers have made contact with the family; they did that on Thursday and demanded a ransom of N10million. We have begged them that we cannot raise the money. We are pleading for her safe return,” the source said.

APC Apologises To Kankara Schoolboys, Urges Police To Learn From Lapses

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has apologised to the recently abducted and released students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State, promising that such an incident will never repeat itself.
The party, in a statement, on Saturday said the government would do everything humanly possible to ensure that their learning environment is safe and secure going forward.

The statement which was signed by the Chairman, Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee CECPC and Governor of Yobe state, Mai Mala Buni, called on Nigerians not to lose hope in the capacity of the government and its security agencies.
The statement read, “We want to congratulate the parents of the children and also apologise on behalf of our party that one of our biggest promises was security and although we are doing our utmost best, such incidence is a sad event and must, at all costs, not repeat itself.
“When we received the news of the abduction at first, we were traumatised. We were heartbroken, and this was the same for most, if not all Nigerians, who heard of the unfortunate incident.
“As a party, we call on Nigerians not to lose their hope in our government and the security apparatus.
“We thank all those who made this rescue effort possible, especially the governors of Katsina and Zamfara States, the security agents across the country.
“We do not doubt the capacity of our security agencies. We believe and know they are capable, especially when they are well motivated and led, which we can assure is the case under President Muhammadu Buhari.
“We are trusting and hopeful that this episode will never repeat itself. We encourage the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Police and other security agents to take lessons from the lapses that led to this abduction and ensure that we never see a repeat of this tragedy again.”

E2%80%99t-fret-%E2%80%94-miyetti-allah-ohanaeze-and-afenifere-can-help-tackle-insecurity-fredrick Don’t Fret — Miyetti Allah, Ohanaeze And Afenifere Can Help Tackle Insecurity, By Fredrick Nwabufo

Fredrick Nwabufo

Security is everybody’s business. It is a flawed assumption that issues of security must remain strictly within the orbit of agencies with the lawed responsibility. Even security agencies cannot function without citizens’ alliance and community help. Simply, they cannot operate in vacancy of citizens’ collaboration and the support of stakeholders and other institutions – both formal and informal.
The most fundamental ingredient to addressing crime is intelligence. And intelligence does not jump out from the coloured screen of a computer; it comes from people – of all shades and appliances. It is the reason I believe our traditional institutions and socio-cultural organisations can be veritable accomplices in the fight against insurgency and banditry. We are yet to really extract commitment from and forge a partnership with these institutions. Yes, we are yet to give them due recognition as accessories to peace and stability in the country. These institutions are the closest to the people. They know their own; they understand and speak the language, and they know the terrain.
Socio-cultural organisations should not only be cymbals for sounding alarms and making demands. They can be the partners of the security agencies in securing the country. In fact, they hold a bigger share in the security enterprise because they represent their people, and as such any challenge affects them directly.
On Friday, Bello Matawalle, governor of Zamfara, said Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), the Fulani socio-cultural group, helped secure the release of abducted the Kankara schoolboys who have spent nearly seven days in grisly captivity. According to him, no ransom was paid. In his words: ‘’Ask anybody, we don’t pay bandits a dime. What we do is to extend olive branch to them because they also want to live in peace.’’

Fredrick Nwabufo

Aminu Masari, governor of Katsina, corroborated Matawalle’s claim.  He said: “Those involved in the negotiation include my adviser, some top military and police operatives. Members of Miyetti Allah; (they) were all involved in the negotiation.”
The alleged involvement of Miyetti Allah in the negotiation for the release of the schoolboys actuated a furore on social media. Some asked why Miyetti Allah would be involved in the parleying while others wondered when the socio-cultural organisation became a security agency and state actor.
The suspicion of Nigerians who have commented on this issue is understandable, but the misgiving is more of emotion than reason. I must say, Nigerians have a right to be cynical about the purported involvement of Miyetti Allah in this matter, considering the past actions, posturing and statements of the group. But was Miyetti Allah’s intervention needed? Yes. Though the group is not a state actor, it is a stakeholder in Nigeria, particularly in the north just like Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo and Afenifere. If we all agree that most of the bandits terrorising the country are of the Fulani stock, does it not make sense that an organisation representing the entire group intervenes in moments of crisis by its own, and most importantly prevail on them to give up their arms?
Perhaps, the reason for the hurly-burly of emotions on social media is that Miyetti Allah, before the Kankara schoolboys abduction, had not condemned the actions of these stray hounds or intervened wholesomely in similar cases of banditry and kidnapping elsewhere. If they had, I am not aware. This is where I think Miyetti Allah comes short. The group should seize this moment to condemn the perpetrators of banditry and intervene actively and consistently in cases of banditry and kidnapping by providing intelligence to security agencies and speaking with its youths to re-channel their energies away from the kidnapping industry.
As I wrote in ‘No need for panic, working with Miyetti Allah in south-east is a security strategy’ in June 2019, we must give no room for conspiracy theories – of domination, invasion or conquest. These are the by-products of distrust and fear. And instead of running wild with emotions, let us give space for rational thinking and disciplined conversations.
Miyetti Allah, Ohanaeze and Afenifere can play crucial roles in rolling back the boulder of banditry and kidnapping. Banditry is not a northern problem, it is a Nigerian snag. It involves everyone. To deal with this challenge we must not isolate any stakeholder or group. Security is everybody’s business.
