Family Of Slain Vendor Demands N500m Compensation From Gbajabiamila, Threatens Legal Action

Following the gruesome murder of a newspaper vendor, Ifeanyichukwu Okereke, by a security aide of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, the family of the victim has demanded for the sum of N500m as compensation.
The Okereke family said it would take legal action against Gbajabiamila if all the demands were not met within seven days.

This was contained in a letter dated November 23, 2020 signed by lawyer to the family, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN).
The letter reads in part, “Our clients have instructed us to make from your good self, the following modest demands: That you use your good offices to ensure the immediate prosecution of your security aide (Abdullahi Hassan), who went on a frolic of his own, clearly acted outside the purview of his duty and responsibility by shooting to death an innocent, harmless.
“That you adequately compensate the Okereke family with a modest sum of N500m only. This monetary demand can never adequately replace or take the place of their son, husband, brother, and breadwinner’s life. But it will at least mitigate the obvious trauma and hardship the premature demise of their irreplaceable breadwinner has placed on them.
“Take note therefore that it is our clients’ firm instruction that in the event that you fail, refuse and/or neglect to accede to or proffer reasonable compensatory terms to our above modest demands within seven days from the date of this letter, we shall without any further correspondences from us, take appropriate legal steps to enforce our clients’ constitutional rights.”

Abuja Court Sentences 40-year-old Man To 40 Days In Prison For Stealing Candy

Kabiru Zakari, a 40-year-old man, has been sentenced to 40 days in prison by a court in Karu, Abuja, for stealing candies and boxer shots at a supermarket.
Prosecutor, Ayotunde Adeyanju, told the court that one Agida Stephen, a manager at Fordmart Supermarket, Karu, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station on November 6.

The complainant said that on the same date, the convict trespassed into the above-mentioned supermarket, disguised as a customer, picked two bottles of water, a packet of sweets, and three boxers valued at N4,500.
Zakari reportedly hid his bounty under his cloth but was captured by the supermarket’s CCTV cameras.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 348 and 288 of the Penal Code Law.
Justice Inuwa Maiwada handed the verdict on Tuesday after the convict had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.
Zakari was, however, given an option of N10, 000 fine with a warning to desist from stealing.
The judge mandated him to undertake intensive Islamic study for “transformation of character”, The Nation reports.

Amos Dauda, a 20-year-old mechanic, has been sentenced to be whipped 15 times for stealing an iPhone worth N150,000 by a Kaduna State Chief Magistrate Court.
Dauda was arraigned on Tuesday on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.

He pleaded guilty and asked for leniency in his sentencing.
Prosecutor, Leo Chidi, told the court that one Stephen Francis reported the matter at the Gabasawa Police Station on November 15.
He said Dauda went into the complainant’s apartment while he was sleeping and stole his iPhone valued at N150,000, adding that he was caught while trying to escape from the house and the said iPhone was recovered from him.
He stated that the offence contravened sections 257 and 271 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
Ibrahim Emmanuel, the Chief Magistrate, also ordered Dauda to clean the court premises as part of his sentence, NAN reports.
Emmanuel advised the convict to be of good behaviour and warned him to desist from committing crimes as the court would not be lenient with him next time.

John Kerry will be climate envoy while foreign policy veteran, Antony Blinken, is nominated for Secretary of State role, BBC reports.
Biden can now access millions of dollars in funds, national security briefings and key government officials to properly prepare to take over the presidency on January 20.

Reacting to Onochie’s post, Etomi-Wellington wrote, “You are a disgrace both home and abroad. You should be ashamed that these children have to do this with cardboards. U.S. President Donald Trump

The United States Government led by President Donald Trump has imposed restrictions on citizens from 15 African countries planning to travel to America on tourist or business visas.
The countries affected are Angola, Burkina Faso, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Mauritania, Sudan, Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde, Burundi.

The new restriction requires temporary visitors to post bonds of up to $15,000 in order to visit the US.
It is targeted at stopping visa overstays, according to the US State Department.
The incoming Joe Biden administration has said it would reverse the travel restrictions imposed by Trump especially on African countries in the first 100 days of assuming office.
The US Consulate in Nigeria on Tuesday said that Nigeria was not included in the new list of countries affected by the visa restrictions.

#EndSARS: CNN Releases Second Report On Lekki Shootings

#EndSARS Protesters

Despite threats of sanction from the Nigerian Government over its investigative report on the shooting at Lekki Toll Gate during the #EndSARS protests, CNN has released a second report on the incident.
Last week, the media organisation published an investigation alleging that the Nigerian Army used live bullets on protesters during its intervention in the #EndSARS protest at Lekki in Lagos State.

Nigerian Government Threatens CNN, Describes Lekki Incident As ‘Massacre Without Dead Bodies’

On Monday, in a letter addressed to Jonathan Hawkins, VP Communications of CNN, Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information, said the report did not just fall short of journalistic standards but reinforces the disinformation that is going around on the issue.
However, the network on Tuesday did a second report with more damning footage showing soldiers shooting at unarmed protesters on October 20, 2020.
In its report, CNN quoted Ahmed Taiwo, Commander of 81 Division, Army Military Intelligence Brigade, as admitting that soldiers carried live ammunition to the protest ground.
The CNN report also highlighted the fact that Taiwo’s claim was at variance with the minister’s, who had claimed last week that the army fired blank bullets.
The fresh report also showed protesters running as soldiers opened fire at the toll gate.

File Photo

Unidentified persons on Monday attacked oil facilities operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company and Nigerian Agip Oil Company at Ikarama community, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa.
Mr Ben Warder, a youth leader in Ikarama near the incident site, said on Tuesday that residents heard several sounds from the explosion that rocked the oil fields on Monday but were too scared to approach the area.

He said, “The site is not far from Ikarama, we heard sounds from the blast and it sounded like dynamites and it was not safe to go near so when the situation became quiet we had to trace what happened and it turned out that Shell’s gas pipeline and Agip’s crude lines were destroyed.
“The incident resulted in air pollution from the gas pipeline and crude leak which members of the affected communities are battling to cope with.”
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Mr Michael Adande, an SPDC spokesperson, explained that the oil firm had received reports of the incident and shut down the facility to curtail impact.
He said, “We have report of an interference on our pipeline about 1 kilometre from Ikarama community in Bayelsa State.
“We immediately shut-in the line and we have informed the relevant regulatory government agencies and stakeholders.
“A government-led joint investigation team will determine the cause of the interference.”
