138 NYSC Members Test Positive For COVID-19

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Monday said 138 members of the National Youth Service Corps have tested positive for COVID-19 across the country.
NCDC Director-General, Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this on Monday during the briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

Ihekweazu said those, who tested positive, were either managed at home or in a treatment centre depending on if they had symptoms and what state they were in.
The NCDC boss added that the next challenge would be how to work with education stakeholders to ensure safe reopening of universities.
He said, “A total of 34,785 corps members and members of the camp communities have been tested so far in the last weeks of which only 138 was found positive, which is 0.4 per cent prevalence and 1 in 200 people.
“Universities have proven to be slightly risky; it has its unique challenges but we are confident that we can address this as we have done in other sectors like aviation.”

Court Orders Arrest Of Nigerian Professor Over Electoral Fraud

A high court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has issued an arrest warrant for Prof Ignatius Uduk of the University of Uyo, who is accused of election fraud during the 2019 general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

INEC said Prof Uduk should have been arraigned on November 17 alongside another professor but failed to appear in court.
The statement reads, “Issuing the bench warrant for the arrest of Prof Uduk upon the application of the counsel to INEC, Kpoobari Sigalo, the presiding judge, Justice A.E Archibong, frowned upon the refusal of the professor to obey the order of the court.
“Prof Ignatius Uduk declared election results collated not by him but by undisclosed individuals who only handed them to him to announce.
“He admitted to this fact in his own handwritten (not typed) statement that he earlier signed, even though he refused to come back to the commission’s office for further debriefing to ascertain who delivered the prepared election results to him.
“However, in another deposition, this time in a typed written statement on oath, Prof Uduk disavowed his earlier handwritten statement and surprisingly stood as a witness against the commission to defend the same election results he did not collate but were given to him by undisclosed persons.”

E2%80%99t-need-extra-money-complete-lagos-ibadan-standard-gauge-transport-minister-rotimi We Don’t Need Extra Money To Complete Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge, Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, Says

Rotimi Amaechi, Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, has said that additional funds are not needed to complete the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line.
Nigerians had expressed outrage after Amaechi during his ministry’s budget defence said he requested an additional  $650m for additional works on the Lagos-Ibadan and the Itakpe-Warri standard gauge.

Backtracking on his initial position, he said there was no need for extra money as the $650m had already been previously approved.
He said, “I was merely reporting to the senators that the entire Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge was at the cost of $1.6bn and that we have had to request for another $650m for additional works at both the Lagos-Ibadan and the Itakpe-Warri standard gauge.
“The approval had since been obtained and the funds released long ago and we have since used it for the same purpose. We do not need any extra funds to complete this project and we are saying to Nigerians that we do not need any fresh money to complete the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge.
“What the CCECC has always been using as an excuse was the COVID-19 but this excuse could not be tenable because they have been back at work now in the last four months and no one has been sick on site. So we are urging them to increase the tempo of work as the government is determined to hand this over to Nigerians in January.
“I have asked that the malfunctioning equipment be pulled out and the CCECC and the NRC engineers are looking at whether it is something that could be repaired or replaced. The only challenge is that until that is done, we may have to scale down our services on that line.”

E2%80%99s-attorney-general Real Reason Governor Akeredolu Of Ondo Sacked State’s Attorney-General

Adekola Olawoye

Facts have emerged on the real reason Ondo governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, sacked Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Mr Adekola Olawoye.
The sack of the commissioner was announced on Monday through a statement by the Chief Press Secretary of the governor, Segun Ajiboye.

Adekola Olawoye

Charles Titiloye, a human rights lawyer, has since been announced as Olawoye’s replacement.
Despite being from the same town of Owo, SaharaReporters gathered that things began to fall apart between the two men after Olawoye started rejecting some obscene demands from the state governor.
A top government source, who confirmed this to SaharaReporters, disclosed that the duo had been at loggerheads for over six months over legal issues.

Governor Akeredolu Sacks Ondo Attorney-General

The recent suspension of some lawmakers in the state’s House of Assembly further deepened the division between Olawoye and Akeredolu.
“The sacked Attorney-General is a man who has integrity and conscience. He does not abhor illegality at all because he is highly principled and knows the implication of any illegality that has to do with the law.
“You remember how the crisis in the state House of Assembly started. The AG had been advising that the suspended lawmakers be reinstated because they have a constituency they are representing but the governor refused this despite the court judgment ordering their reinstatement.
“But the last straw that broke the camel’s back is that the governor wanted Olawoye to make his sister-in-law, one Prof Alero, a judge in the state’s high court.
“He wanted the sister-in-law to fill a vacant position of Justice Dele Olupitan, who died recently in the state’s high court.
“The woman by birth is from Delta State and already we have more qualified Ondo State indigenes to fill this slot but Akeredolu is refusing and wants his sister-in-law.
“She is purely an academician and has been in the academics for over 20 years. She has not seen the four walls of the court nor had a history of a case to herself in any court.
“I’m aware that recommendations have been made to the National Judicial Council and they have picked an indigene of the state with good credentials but the governor is refusing that he only wants his sister in-law.
“The governor even said he won’t inaugurate anyone than his own choice which is Prof Alero.
“The governor sees the AG as someone who is not doing his bidding and it is the main reason why he booted him out of that office.
“Even, the Chief Judge (Mrs Oluwatoyin Akeredolu), is not in good terms with the governor because the woman has been trying to avoid him because she knows Akeredolu likes perpetrating illegality.
“I know the sledgehammer would still come on her too because she too doesn’t take nonsense or accede to illegality,” the source said.
When SaharaReporters contacted Mr Olawoye over his sack, he said he was yet to receive any official letter to that effect but promised to react soon.

UPDATE: Again, Nigeria’s Economy Slips Into Recession Under Buhari-led Administration

The statement reads, “This economic crisis provides an opportunity to prioritise access of poor and vulnerable Nigerians to basic socio-economic rights, and to genuinely recommit to the fight against corruption. The country cannot afford getting back to business as usual.
“The President should put the country’s resources at the service of human rights, and to support the less well-off to enjoy an adequate standing of living through cutting the cost of governance and implementing bold transparency and accountability measures in your government’s response to Nigeria’s second recession in five years.
“Implementing human rights, transparency, and accountability measures would save money, address projected adverse human rights impacts of the recession, and fast-track the economic recovery process. It is not too late to take urgent measures that would put the country’s wealth and resources to work for the common good of all Nigerians.
“Decades of mismanagement and corruption, and deep-seated deficiencies in public financial management have directly contributed to higher levels of borrowing and public debts, and consequently, the economic recession. Successive governments have squandered the promise afforded by the country’s natural wealth and resources.”
