Shiite Group Petitions Human Rights Commission, EU, UN, Demands Justice For Lekki Massacre Victims

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, a Shiite group, has submitted a formal petition to the National Human Rights Commission, United Nations and European Union, Abuja, to demand justice for victims of the October 20, 2020 Lekki shooting.
The group condemned the brutal force used on protesters by some soldiers of the Nigerian Army.

In a statement by Secretary, Academic Forum of the ISM, Abdullahi Musa, described the shooting of unarmed protesters as barbaric and uncalled for.
The sect said the carnage was orchestrated and premeditated to stop the protesters from calling for good governance.
The statement read, “We strongly condemn the regime’s attack on peaceful protesters, infiltration of the protests and the Lekki massacre.
“The commencement of the probe on the killings by the state government is welcome. Stakeholders should ensure that the probe leads to the prosecution of perpetrators.
“These deliberate acts by the regime was done in order to provide itself with an excuse to carry out a pre-planned and premeditated mass murder of protesters, which was subsequently carried out by the Nigerian Army at Lekki on 20th October, 2020.
“Therefore, the seemingly endless injustice arouses the cumulative grievances of youths, embarking on nationwide peaceful protests against the savage brutality of the regime’s enforcers. Bravo to the energetic Nigerian youth who have united in the face of such injustice.”

DSS Drags Man To Court For Sharing Fake Video Of President Buhari’s Wedding

The Department of State Services has arraigned one Kabiru Mohammed for creating and sharing a fake video of President Muhammadu Buhari’s wedding to Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq.
Mohammed was arraigned 10 months after he was initially arrested by the DSS.

The DSS, while parading Mohammed in January, said it received a petition from Ahmed to investigate the photos and videos and uncover the persons involved in the circulation of such materials.
The DSS claimed he had confessed to creating and circulating the video.
Mohammed was arraigned at a Chief Magistrates’ Court at Nomansland in Kano on two count charges of defamation and injurious falsehood on Tuesday, TheNation reports.
According to counsel to the DSS, I.B. Bulus, Mohammed’s action caused “confusion and injury to the persons involved, tarnishing their character and causing disaffection among their families and associates, through the spreading of fake news.”
He urged the magistrate court presided over by Aminu Gabari to order the remand of the defendant in the DSS custody for seven days.
The judge, however, turned down the prayer of the DSS and granted Mohammed bail after his counsel, Moses Edema, said the alleged offence was a bailable.
Giving his ruling, Gabari granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum.
As part of the conditions, the magistrate said Mohammed must daily report to the DSS office from 8am to 2pm on weekdays and 9am to 2pm at weekends.

Nigerian Senate Urged To Revisit Amended Electoral Bill, Pass To Buhari For Assent

The Nigerian Senate has been asked to revive the amended electoral bill and pass to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.
National Publicity Secretary of the Action Democratic Party, Prince Adelaja Adeoye, made the call on Tuesday after positing that the task is now before the current 9th Assembly to re-introduce the bill to the President for assent.

The bill, which was passed to the President by the 8th Senate, was rejected by Buhari for various reasons including that it was close to the 2019 general elections.
Adelaja stated that there were so many issues being faced by Nigerians, which includes the call for scrapping of police unit, which has become dreaded and a torn in the flesh of citizens leading to a nationwide #EndSARS campaign, but that the people must not also forget to demand that the abandoned amended electoral bill, which is capable of enthroning good leaders that can fix the country be revisited.
He said, “Nigerians are not speaking up on a very important matter that is capable of shaping the 2023 elections. I understand that there are various contending issues we are currently faced with.
“Prior to 2019 elections, the 8th Assembly led by Senate President, @BukolaSaraki presented an amended electoral act, which solves a number of usual irregularities marring our elections.
“The unattended electoral amendment bill by President Buhari was of the 8th Assembly, and for it to be sign into law,  it needs to be re-introduced by this current 9th Assembly led by Senate President Ahmad Lawan.
“Nigerian populace needs to immediately begin to engage their 9th House of Reps and Senate members in their various constituencies, to as a matter of urgency put pressure on them, to re-introduce the electoral act, as amended by the 8th Assembly, but not signed into law by President Buhari.”
Adelaja noted that the amended Electoral Act solves a number of problems militating against the conduct of our elections.
He added that the essence of having an amended electoral bill amongst other things was to further strengthen the ways our elections were conducted, allow equal opportunity for candidates, conform with mordern electioneering process, and ultimately work against ballot snatching or stuffing through digitalisation.
“It will also bring sanity before, during and after the electioneering process, and mitigate against avoidable loss of lives, time wastage, since electronic means of collation and transmission of results will be involved.
“I call on all Nigerians to rise up and demand from the 9th Assembly to represent the ammended electoral act to President Buhari for his assent. If there are grey areas, they should make it public, so it can be fixed.
“The President has several months to end his second term, which is his last tenure, the best gift both the 9th Assembly and Buhari can give to Nigerians is to leave our electoral process far better than they met it in 2015,” he added.

Kannywood Actress Debunks Rumour Of Her Imprisonment Over Outfit Revealing Her Back

Rahama Sadau, a Kannywood actress, has dismissed news of her being arrested and imprisoned over a dress she wore revealing her back.
The 26-year-old actress stirred controversy and was accused of blasphemy after she shared some of her photos on social media wherein she wore a backless dress, which brought out her curves.

The development generated controversy with several conservative Muslims lashing out at her for going against Islamic tenets of dressing.
Reacting to the criticisms in a series of social media posts on Monday, Sadau said her fashion choice was not aimed at insulting Islam or Prophet Muhammad as alleged by some.
There were, however, insinuations on the social media that the actress had been arrested and kept in prison.
Sadau, who said this period was a hard time for her, tweeted that “this is not the right time for fake news”.
She said, “I have received many messages that I have been arrested and sentenced to jail earlier today. I have no idea where the news emanated from.
“I’m therefore calling on people to stop spreading fake and unfounded stories.
“I haven’t received any police invitation or court trial. I’m reiterating this to well wishers that I’m safe and fine and I have never received any legal trial for whatever reason. To those trying to bank on this issue to create an unrest, please give it a rest.”
An Islamic scholar, Lawal Gusau, who wrote a petition against the actress, had claimed that the police were able to track Sadau through her phone and stopped her from fleeing the country.
Gusau is calling for the arrest and trial of the actress, claiming that her picture made non-Muslim blaspheme Prophet Muhammad.

Activists Protest At US Embassy, Demand Justice For Ken Saro-Wiwa, Eight Others 25 Years After Killing By Abacha Regime

Civil society organisations and human rights activists on Monday staged a peaceful protest at the Embassy of United States in Abuja to demand justice for Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders executed 25 years ago.
They were hanged on November 10, 1995, by Nigeria’s military regime under late General Sani Abacha for protesting Shell’s destructive environmental practices in the Niger Delta.

The group called on the United States to intervene and prevail on the Nigerian Government to exonerate the late activists, who were unjustly executed.
Leader of the group, Sidney Usman, said the protest was aimed at drawing the attention of the Government of the United States and other Western countries to the failure of the Nigerian Government to exonerate the activists 25 years after.
He also called on the government to  provide their families with adequate reparations.
The protesters urged the Nigerian Government to take all necessary steps in consultation with relevant local communities to ensure that the protection, promotion and fulfilment of the Ogoni people’s human rights including their right to a safe, healthy environment.
The rights group also called for immediaterelease of six #ENDSARS protesters, who were arrested at the gate of the National Assembly for demanding good governance.
Usman said, “The Nigerian Government should unfreeze all the accounts of #ENDSARS protesters. It is undemocratic to persecute and vilify innocent Nigerians demanding an end to police brutality, insecurity, corruption and bad governance.”
