E2%80%99s-delivery Salary Arrears: Federal Fire Service Worker Dies While Looking For Money For Wife’s Delivery

A staff of the Federal Fire Service has died while sourcing funds to pay the medical bill of his wife as the agency continues to owe months of salary arrears.
The staff, who was an Assistant Inspector of Fire, General Duty, died while looking for money to pay the hospital bill after his wife was delivered of a baby.

A source, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said the staff of the Federal Fire Service was forced to borrow a motorcycle from his friend to raise money as the agency was yet to pay two months’ salary arrears.
“He was an AIF in the squad and he died in the last week of October. The wife gave birth and he could not pay the hospital bill.
“He went to borrow a motorcycle from a friend for him to raise some money to pay for the hospital bill and give the wife money.
“Unfortunately, he was hit by a car while looking for the hospital bill for his wife.
“If they (Federal Fire Service) had paid his salary as at when due, he will not find himself in the situation that he is unable to pay delivery fee and a car knocking him to death,” the source said.
Some staff, who confirmed the death of their colleague to SaharaReporters, also said the agency was yet to pay the two-month salary arrears.
They, however, revealed that the agency had credited their pension accounts while the main salary was yet to be paid.
One of the staff at the Abuja office said, “My pension fee for September and October has been paid and we have not been paid the main salary.
“They have not told us the main reason they are not paying our salary.
“Where did they get the money to pay for pension when they claim no money to pay salaries?”

Staff Of Federal Fire Service Cry Out Over Non-payment Of Salaries By Agency

SaharaReporters had reported that staff of the Federal Fire Service raised the alarm over the non-payment of allowances by the agency.
The staff revealed that the agency had refused to pay them their salaries and allowances with no “tangible reasons”.
They said that despite the non-payment of salaries, they were being made to resume to the office and do daily tasks as well as respond to emergencies.
In a circular on October 14, 2020 and signed by Agholor Michael for the Director, Finance and Account of the Federal Fire Service, the agency also said that other agencies were also suffering the same fate, adding that efforts were in place to resolve the non-payment.
“This is to inform the personnel of the service that the delay in the payment of September 2020 salary was due to the insufficient funds in the Federal Fire Service personnel cost head just like other MDAs.
“Consequent upon the above, relevant agencies have been contacted and efforts are in top gear to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” the circular reads.
The staff of the agency, however, debunked the claim of the management that other agencies were not being paid.
“We are under the Ministry of Interior together with Nigerian Correctional Service and the Immigration Service and those two MDAs were paid for September and are receiving October payment,” the staff said.

E2%80%99t-be-unfairly-treated-using-it-rinu-oduala All I Have Is My Voice, I Shouldn’t Be Unfairly Treated For Using It By Rinu Oduala

Rinu Oduala

I am part of a generation of Nigerians, who have lived most of their adult lives under ‘democratic’ rule yet I wake up this morning feeling there is no difference between the Nigeria I grew up in and the Nigeria my parents grew up in. The sacrifices of the democrats, who bravely stood on the June 12 mandate to bring our democracy to life seem to be in vain. Ironically many are serving in this government and ruling party.
Everywhere I turn, I am told that I should be ‘grateful’ for a democracy that lives were lost, I should be thankful that I have a voice and I can speak up for myself and my peers. But how can I be grateful when young men and women disappear every day, some killed recklessly without cause, while others get scarred for life—physically, emotionally, or both.
When we began to protest it was because young Nigerians decided to speak up.

Rinu Oduala

We spoke up – not because we wanted to overthrow the government but because we wanted the police to stop killing us. We did not carry arms, or incite any insurrection. Our only weapon was peaceful protest enshrined in Section 40 of our 1999 Constitution. At every point we maintained calm and educated our followers – reiterating throughout the protests that we were not there to fight the government but to ask for change and to follow through to make sure that change was effected.
We believed that somehow we would be spared from the systemic violence and breakdown of social order that was the direct result of the government’s actions. Unfortunately we were mistaken.
I was volunteered to receive donations to our cause by Nigerians at home and abroad who felt helpless to personally protest but believed they could make a difference through financial sacrifices. Such was the passion of average Nigerians to contribute how best they can to the #EndSARS cause, they found my personal account number and sent in what they could sacrifice towards the cause. Some people even sent as little ₦500; all they could spare towards the cause. To have their sacrifices rubbished by the government and their motivations questioned is disheartening because the raised funds including over N200,000 naira gathered from my business were meant to be disbursed to attend to the medical bills of injured protesters.
We called for among other things, a probe into the killings and torture of people and the government agreed by setting up judicial panels. In order to assure young people of the independence and fairness of the panel I took up the role as a youth representative at the detriment of my education, personal life and family. I did this to make peace. I did to ensure our young people understood that the only way to create a better and safer Nigeria is to do things lawfully. Why am I still being targeted for lending the government my goodwill?
I am not part of Nigeria’s political or business elite—I have no relatives in government or family members with enough wealth to sway powerful individuals. I am just an ordinary young Nigerian. I study, selling hoodies and other clothing for ₦5,000 to pay my school fees. I also do the odd bit of freelancing, taking on some brand influencing work to ensure my family doesn’t suffer. Somehow, however, my existence threatens my government, the fact that I have a voice is enough for them to try to silence me.
In the Nigeria I am fighting for, it wouldn’t matter that I am a child of nobody coming from the average Nigerian home. The Nigeria I am fighting for is one that prioritizes every voice, protects every inalienable right, even mine.
I decided to use the only currency I have, my voice to speak up against extrajudicial killings, torture, extortion and unjust harassment that is still happening in a democratic nation in the 21st century! The government also agreed that reform is inevitable and promised us they were going to listen so why punish the same people that are speaking up?
I am not afraid—I am only disappointed that this country will treat me this way.
Nigeria is all I have, and I have a right to demand that it works for all of us, not just those with influence, wealth, or a government position.
In a country that people have been voiceless for a long time, people holding the government accountable is being seen as too much? How can we ensure that this sort of thing will encourage people to build a new Nigeria? A Nigeria that will be filled with accountable government officials, where all forms of oppressions and injustice is a thing of the past. How do you expect me as a part of the future of this country to still believe in a country who thinks they have the right through CBN to freeze my account for no just cause?
This is not fair. But we will make it fair. Otherwise, there is no future for my generation and the generations to come.

Nigeria Police Continue Crackdown On Protesters, Move Arrested Persons to Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force on Monday moved an EndSARS campaigner, Eromosele Adene, to the Federal Capital Territory, to reportedly avoid any demonstration his detention would cause.
Adene was arrested over the weekend for distributing flyers and asking people to come out for a resumption of the protest that was brutally ended by the killing of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20.

“He has been moved to Abuja and I think they decided to move him because they would not be able to control the outrage in Lagos,” his sister, Onomene Adene, told PUNCH.

South-West Governors, Monarchs Back Social Media Regulation In Nigeria

Governors in the South-West region of Nigeria along with traditional rulers from the geo-political zone, have joined the Northern Governors’ Forum in supporting the government’s drive to regulate social media.
They made this known in a communique issued after a meeting held with representatives from the Presidency.

“We recognise the damaging and negative impact of fake/false news and worry about its destructive and dangerous potency of fake news. We call on the Federal Government to use the instrumentality of existing laws and those regulations bench-marked from other countries to provide safeguards against the spread of fake news. 2015 Cyber Act will also be fully used,” the statement reads in part.
“Federal Government should ensure that technology is used effectively for the advancement of the Nigerian security and not its destruction by working with the technology cum social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. The regime of checks and gatekeeping should be fully employed,” it added.
Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, and ministers from the region represented the presidency at the meeting attended by all six governors from the geo-political zone.
The Nigerian Government, represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, on Saturday begged governors from the South-East to back the regulation of social media as well.
Nigerians have accused the government of being insincere with their intent to reform the police and end bad governance in the country.

E2%80%99s-senate-president-urges-government-urgently-address-unemployment EndSARS: Nigeria’s Senate President Urges Government To Urgently Address Unemployment

Ahmad Lawan

Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, has expressed fear that the next street demonstration by the youth might end up in a total uprising if the Nigerian Government failed to address issues of unemployment, poverty, and the living standard in the country.
Senator Lawan, who recounted the events of the nationwide #EndSARS protests, said the government should have learnt from the demonstration and urgently put solutions to the needs and concern of the youth.

Ahmad Lawan

He spoke on Monday during the budget defense session of the Ministry of Agriculture at the National Assembly, stressing that the government needed to make provision in its budget to meaningfully engage the youth to another restiveness.
He said, “They were seeking the attention of leaders and they got the attention. So our budget especially for 2021 should be mindful of what we do to provide employment opportunities for these youths.
“They demonstrated, they protested because they could do so. There are so many other people who may not be youthful but are also in the same need but they didn’t protest.
“Let us meet them where they are, we don’t want to wait until they also start to grumble or protest we should be proactive, we should run to them and they are in the rural areas.
“So we should meet them there, give them what we can within the purview of our resources and leave them there to live a productive life and that is the only way that we can make a difference in the lives of the people.
“Let’s meet them where they are and many of them are in the rural areas. Let’s give them what we can and keep them in the rural areas and make their lives productive.
“On our part, we are going to be accountable. We escaped this on (#EndSARS Protest); the other one is inescapable.
“Agriculture is enough to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria. Something that Buhari has not been able to do.”

United States President, Trump, Fires Secretary Of Defense, Mark Esper

President Donald Trump of the United States has sacked Defense Secretary, Mark Esper, ousting one of his top cabinet officials just days after losing his re-election bid.
“Mark Esper has been terminated. I would like to thank him for his service,” Trump said on Twitter, announcing Christopher Miller, current head of the National Counter-terrorism Center, as his replacement.

…Chris will do a GREAT job! Mark Esper has been terminated. I would like to thank him for his service.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 9, 2020

The shakeup comes after reports that Esper had prepared a letter of resignation in recent days, prompting lawmakers, former Defense officials and military experts to urge him to remain in his post.
Esper and Trump have previously clashed over the President’s use of active-duty troops to quash incidents of civil unrest.

Lawyers Protest In Ondo Over Unpaid Allowances, Threaten Strike Action

Legal practitioners in the Ministry of Justice, Ondo State, on Monday threatened to embark on strike over the refusal of the government to pay some of their allowances.
The lawyers, under the banner of the Legal Officers Association of Nigeria, stormed the office of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in Akure with placards, chanting different solidarity songs.

They explained that the hazard allowances approved for them as legal practitioners working with the state government were not being paid despite a series of letters to relevant authorities.

Mr Victor Falodun, leader of the protesting lawyers, said the adjudication of justice in many cases in the state might suffer due to the non-payment of their allowances.
He said, “Government has been promising to pay these allowances for a very long time but we feel their empty promises was enough.
“They have refused to release the funds approved for outfit/robe allowance since March 2020 and we keep getting all sorts of promises from the government.
“We are also tired of working as government counsels and not getting paid for our allowances as some of us take the commercial motorcycle to court every day because there are no vehicles.
“Just two out of the 17 vehicles refurbished in the Ministry of Justice were returned and this has further made life difficult for us to attend court cases.
“Aside from this, we are also saying legal poverty must end in this state as the state counsels are the least paid in the country if you do your findings very well.”

He added that the lawyers will no longer work as from Tuesday until their demands were met by the state government.
Mr Adekola Olawoye, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo, could not be reached when contacted by SaharaReporters for comments.
