2020 UTME: Policeman Arrested For Impersonation

A policeman, Etim Israel, has been arrested for impersonation at the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
Israel, a constable with Akwa Ibom State Command, was arrested for paying someone to take the UTME examination on his behalf.

The policeman, according to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, registered for the exam with his name but had his impersonator did the biometric identification and face capturing.
Admitting to the act, Israel confessed to have paid N30,000 to engage the services of the mercenary (a teacher), one Emmanuel, said to be on the run, to sit for the examination as he was away on special duties, PUNCH reports.
After scoring over 240 in the exam, he was said to have decided to commence the admission process but couldn’t sail through because of the disparity in the photograph.
The difficulty was said to have prompted him to visit the JAMB office for correction but landed in trouble.
“I went to their (JAMB) office to change my picture when they told me (in Akwa Ibom) that I won’t be able to use the result because of the picture,” Israel reportedly said.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, said Israel would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He said, “When some candidates complain that they have registered for our examination but could not be verified on the day of examination, many do not grasp the full import of their claims as such candidates, who are more often than not impersonators, expected to be allowed to enter the examination hall without undergoing necessary searches.”

Chevron Nigeria Limited has concluded plans to sack 25 per cent of its workforce in Nigeria.
CNL said the slash was due to review of its manpower requirement going by the changing business environment.

The oil major in a statement on Friday by its General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Esimaje Brikinn, said it would continue to evaluate opportunities to improve capital efficiency and reduce operating costs.
Brikinn explained that CNL was in alignment with both its Joint venture partners, the NNPC and Department of Petroleum Resources,
He said, “The aim is to have a business that is competitive and have an appropriately sized organisation with improved processes. This will increase efficiency and effectiveness, retain value, reduce cost, and generate more revenue for the Federal Government of Nigeria.
“It is important to note that all our employees will retain their employment until the reorganisation process is completed. We have prospects for our company in Nigeria; however, we must make the necessary adjustments in light of the prevailing business climate; and we need everyone’s support to get through these tough times stronger, more efficient and more profitable, in order to sustain the business.
“We are actively engaging our workforce to ensure they understand why this is being done. We will continue to consistently engage all relevant stakeholders, including the leadership of the employee unions as we continue this process of business optimisation.”

Election: We Won’t Post Corps Members To Troubled Coastal Areas In Ondo, Says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed that it would not post any member of the National Youth Service Corps to coastal areas in Ondo State as ad-hoc staff during the governorship election on October 10.
There had been fears that members of the NYSC being used as ad-hoc staff in coastal areas of the state always fell victim of violence and attack.

Mrs Dolapo Alo, INEC officer in charge of civil society organisation in the state, said this on Friday while featuring on a radio programme aired on Crest 87.7 FM Akure.
She said, “We are not going to deploy corps members to that region but would use the indigenes of that particular environment for the election in the riverine areas.
“We have doubled the canons that would take the ad-hoc staff to the riverine areas of the state in order to overcome the issue of delay in the arrival of election materials.
“We have concluded the training for all ad-hoc staff that would be deployed for the election.”
Alo also explained that the commission had started the distribution of non-sensitive materials to the 18 local government areas of the state in preparation for the election.
She assured that People Living With Disabilities were being taken care of by the commission in order to exercise their franchise freely during the election.
Meanwhile, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, has warned corps members participating in the election not to post results of the poll on social media.
Ibrahim said corps members should build on the performance of their counterparts in Edo State to be good representatives of the country.
He spoke on Friday in Akure during a visit to the state ahead of the governorship election on October 10.

About 200 Ghanaians working under Nigerians whose shops had been locked up by the Presidential Taskfl Force on Retail Trade at the Suame Magazine in the Ashanti region, have threatened to demonstrate against the government for closing down the shops of their employers.
According to GhanaWeb, the closure of the shops, they said, had rendered them jobless and made it difficult for them to feed themselves and their dependents.

They claimed that their employers had genuine documents to operate and do not understand why the shops were closed down together with those, who did not have genuine documents.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, they pleaded with the Ghanaian Government to consider reopening shops belonging to Nigerians, who had genuine documents to operate or they demonstrate and vote against the government.

Nigerian Man Sentenced To 40-year Jail Term In United Kingdom For Double Murder

A 28-year-old Nigerian man, Obinna Ezeoke, was on Thursday jailed for 40 years in the United Kingdom over the murder of 53-year-old Annie Ekofo and her 21-year-old nephew, Bervil Ekofo, at their home in East Finchley in September 2016.
According to prosecutors, Ezeoke, said to be a drug dealer, crept into Ekofo’s home just after dawn with intent to kill a target of gang revenge.
On hearing a noise in the house, Bervil, a student and nephew staying with Ekofo, went to investigate and was shot at close range.

Ekofo, who also went to investigate the noise was shot by Ezeoke, a court in the Old Bailey, London, heard.
Prosecution’s evidence included a CCTV footage of Obinna’s car to and from the scene, a gun case discovered under his bed and gunshot residue. The car was discovered to have been bought and registered by Obinna using a fake name.
Obinna claimed the gunshot residue came from a different shooting when others had used the vehicle.
In a statement before the sentencing, Chantelle Mami, Bervil Ekofo’s mother, said there were no words to describe how “traumatic” it was to have a child killed. She said, “We grow to accept that death is a part of life and we should embrace it. “However, no-one really prepares you for burying your child whose life was taken from them by another. “I have no more words as my heart is heavy, I just hope that justice continues to be served.”
Meanwhile Ezeoke’s father, Chiedozie Ezeoke, accused the UK authorities of not given his son a fair trial.
“It is with an absolute sense of trust in our country that I make this appeal to your commission. I am putting up this letter to request your urgent intervention on this matter. My son was tried five times which is unprecedented in English and Wales legal history. “Justice William Davis allowed for the fifth trial, and differed reasons for that, until the conclusion of the trial, which was strange,” he said in a message sent to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and the Ministry of Justice.

South Africans Staged #NigeriansMustGo Protest Because They Lost Their Jobs Due To COVID-19, Nigerian Lawyer Says, Urges Nigerian Government To Intervene

The recent trending hashtag on Twitter by South Africans asking Nigerians to leave their country was triggered by the effect of COVID-19 lockdown in which many people lost their jobs, a Nigerian living in South Africa told SaharaReporters.
Last week a protest was held outside the Nigerian High Commission in the capital, Pretoria, under the hashtag #PutSouthAfricansFirst.

Some South Africans pushed for reforms as they complained about the crime rate in their communities, alleging Nigerians play a major role in numbers surging, Africafeeds.com reports
Some South Africans claimed African immigrants in the country had taken their jobs and are driving crime rate high.
“We just discovered that during the COVID-19 lockdown, a lot of people lost business opportunities, and foreigners tend to move on,” said South Africa-based Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Austin Okeke.
“They are resilient with businesses, and South Africans have lost a lot of jobs. A lot of business opportunities are not there, so they now want to shut out foreigners from those opportunities so that they will be the ones engaging in those businesses. The businesses fall under the informal sector.”
Okeke, who affirmed that Nigerians are safe as they go about their daily business, however, pointed out that the situation could cause another xenophobic attack, if not addressed.

Nigerians Given 12-hour Ultimatum To Leave South African Town

He told SaharaReporters that this had always been the cause of previous xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. “Nigerians are safe. They go to work.  They go to their businesses. We have Nigerian professionals here; lecturers, lawyers, medical doctors. This is how attacks will start. Something will trigger it, something in this nature will trigger the xenophobic attack, and the next thing you see is that they are looting shops,” said Okeke. While he assured that the current situation was under control as a result of the exemplary efforts of the South African government and the Nigerian professionals, he criticised the Nigerian government for not speaking up against the actions of South Africans. “The number of people that went to protest is just like 50. And the South African government is treating it as a negligible set of people that came to embarrass the government. It hasn’t had any effect after the protest march to the Nigerian High Commission. The government is not just folding its arms; the government has given a lot of security warnings. “They have cautioned some people. Even Julius Malema, one of the opposition leaders, tweeted that those people should go and look for work to do instead of chasing fellow Africans. All these things we see often. We pray it does not spill over and becomes another casualty.
“As I am speaking to you, I’ve not seen any countermeasure from the Nigerian government. They are not doing anything except the response that the ambassador gave. A serious country will go offensive, like giving a counter media offensive to change the narrative. It is only we the private people doing our best to change the narrative with Twitter, and other social media posts.” Okeke said that the positive impact of Nigerian professionals could not be underrated in the South African economy. “If you withdraw Nigerian doctors from their hospitals, the health system will collapse. We have lecturers at the universities, professors, engineers, students, so activities are going on. Nobody has been so far harassed. I cannot rule out maybe victims of criminality. The everyday criminality is possible but nothing serious,” he said.
