Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has narrated how his deputy, Lamidi Adeosun, saved his life when he was ambushed by Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East.
Buratai disclosed this in Kuta, Ayedire Local Government Area of Osun State, on Monday.
He said Adeosun, who is the present Chief of Training and Operations, was a competent officer, whose effort in rejigging the army paved the way for the successful operations in the battle against insurgency in the North-East.
He said, “When I had the first ambush, he was with me in the vehicle, by my side. It happened on the 18th of September, 2015, and I can see the courage he exhibited.
“And he was able to mobilise the troop to counter the bandits, the criminals, the terrorists out of the way. So, his elevation is not new to me. He deserves it.
“When I was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff, I met Lamidi Adeosun at the North-East. I met Adeosun as the commander of operations there and he started the rejigging processes of the Nigerian Army and we commenced our upward and progressive movement towards the technical defeat of Boko Haram.”

TUC Threatens Indefinite Nationwide Strike, Protest Over Petrol, Electricity Tariff Hike
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria has threatened to commence an indefinite industrial action and national protest from Wednesday, September 23, 2020 over the recent increase in electricity tariff and petrol price.
TUC disclosed this in a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday signed by its President, Mr Quadri Olaleye, and Secretary-General, Mr Musa Lawal.
The union described the hike in the pump price of petrol and electricity tariff by the Nigerian Government as unfavourable and unfortunate.
It said some of the issues that had become worrisome to the working class, their families and the masses included the sudden increase in the pump price of petrol without any definitive and concrete efforts to make the nation’s refineries functional.
The letter reads, “We have observed the gradual and steady annihilation of Nigeria and Nigerians in the light of government actions for the umpteenth time.
“Government should take immediate steps to: reverse the hike in prices as it affects electricity, petrol and all other social services in the country to status quo ante (prior to increase) within seven days.
“Provide adequate and quality healthcare and education for all to save the poor and the vulnerable at all levels.
“These demands are made in good faith, and to save the dying masses and the vulnerable in our society. In the event of not showing empathy for this class of people by adhering to above demands, we shall, together with our civil societies and allies sympathetic to the suffering masses of our people, commence an indefinite industrial action and national protest from Wednesday, September 23, 2020.”

Idakpini was arrested in June shortly after making a viral video castigating Buratai for the failings of the Nigerian Army to combat and destroy Boko Haram terror group.

Colonel Yabaji, head of the barracks in Sokoto where Idakpini is detained, unleashed about eight soldiers to torture him after receiving orders from Buratai.

Top army sources told SaharaReporters that Idakpini had been barred from medical treatment despite his health taking a severe dip.
Human rights lawyer, Tope Akinyode, had obtained a court order from the Abuja Federal High Court since July 22 2020 mandating the army to grant Idakpini immediate access to his lawyer and family but the army had refused to obey the order.
The President Muhammadu Buhari administration has shown disdain for court orders, rule of law, democracy and free speech.
In August 2018, Buhari, who is also a retired military general, told a gathering of lawyers that the rule of law was subject to national security.

Muyiwa, one of the sons of Nigeria’s former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige (SAN), has said that his father was killed as a result of jealousy.
Muyiwa said this during the 90th posthumous birthday held in honour of the late politician.
Ige, who was the Deputy National leader of Afenifere, a pan Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, was murdered by yet to be identified assailants at his Bodija, Oyo State home on December 23, 2001.
“My father really loved young people. He also believed in the emancipation of the common man and elevating young people. A lot of his peers didn’t like him for that because they could not understand the young people.
“But, that was the essence of Bola Ige, and it was part of the envy that ate into the souls of some of those who didn’t like him. Nonetheless, that was their problem. Bola Ige came to this world, did his bit, and his legacy lives on.”
“The conservatives knew themselves, while the progressives knew themselves. Now, you can’t even differentiate between A and B. There is cross-carpeting going on every day. Consistency is not there.
“There is also a leadership vacuum and so, we need to go back and begin to study what they did well positively in their days and try to enhance that and begin to ensure that there is a vibrant mentoring programme, especially for our youths.
“There are great leaders out there that we can still point to that can support young people,” Muyiwa said.

Nigerian Government Reopens All Airports For Domestic Commercial Flights
The Nigerian Government has approved the reopening of all airports in the country including airstrips for domestic commercial flights.
Domestic flights were suspended in March due to the Coronavirus outbreak in Nigeria.
Hadi Sirika, Minister of Aviation, made the announcement while briefing the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.
He said, “Regarding approvals for flights within the country – domestic approvals. All airports in Nigeria are now open for domestic flights. Private charter operations will no longer need approvals from us to operate within domestic airports in all government-approved airports and in all government-owned airports.
“However, those airports that are private airports – government-approved airports – the operators should check the safety status with the NCAA (Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority). Such airports like Jalingo, Uyo, Asaba, Gombe, Nasarawa, Damaturu, Osubi, etc.
“So, you won’t need any approvals from the minister but you should kindly check the status of these airports with the NCAA which is normal.
“However, all flights out of the country and into the country that are private charter will still need approvals for those kinds of flights including technical stops.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
The United States Government has said it had imposed visa restrictions on Nigerians involved in undermining democracy during the November 2019 Kogi and Bayelsa states elections and in the run-up to the September and October 2020 Edo and Ondo states elections.
This is according to a statement by spokesperson for the Department of State, Morgan Ortagus, on Monday.
However, the US Government did not name the individuals or say how many were affected by the visa restrictions.
Although elections have not yet held in Edo and Ondo states, Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, imposed the visa restriction on these individuals due to their conduct in the run-up to the poll.

The statement reads, “In July 2019, we announced the imposition of visa restrictions on Nigerians who undermined the February and March 2019 elections. Today, the Secretary of State is imposing additional visa restrictions on individuals for their actions surrounding the November 2019 Kogi and Bayelsa states elections and in the run up to the September and October 2020 Edo and Ondo states elections.
“These individuals have so far operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and have undermined democratic principles.
“The Department of State emphasises that the actions announced today are specific to certain individuals and not directed at the Nigerian people. This decision reflects the Department of State’s commitment to working with the Nigerian government to realise its expressed commitment to end corruption and strengthen democracy, accountability, and respect for human rights.”
The US condemned the acts of violence, intimidation, or corruption that harmed Nigerians and undermined the democratic process.
“As the Edo and Ondo off-cycle elections near, we urge all stakeholders including the Independent National Electoral Commission, the political parties, and the security services, to uphold the tenets of democracy and facilitate genuinely free and fair elections, conducted in an appropriately transparent and non-violent manner,” the statement added.

He cited the Coronavirus pandemic as the reason for his plea and urged the striking workers to resume.

“The position of the Ministry of Health is that strikes by healthcare workers jeopardise the lives of citizens, especially at such times of global health emergencies as now.
“Nigeria needs the service of all our health workers to control the spread of COVID-19. Issues around allowances are multi-sectoral and have always been saved with negotiations no matter how long it took.”
The health workers commenced a nationwide strike on midnight of September 13 after claiming that the government failed to pay allowances for services rendered during the COVID-19 pandemic and other welfare packages earlier agreed upon.

Arik Air Condemns Protest By Union, Offers Free Flight Modification To Stranded Passengers
Arik Air has condemned a protest against it on Monday by aviation workers union demanding payment of staff salaries.
Aviation unions including the National Union of Air Transport Employees and Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria shut down operations of the airline over alleged refusal to pay staff since April, placement of 90 per cent of the workforce on compulsory leave as well as anti-labour practices.
The action left many passengers flying with the airline stranded.

Reacting to the incident, Adebanji Ola, Public Relations and Communications Manager of the airline, in an email sent to customers on Monday said the protest was conducted by “disgruntled staff”, adding that free modifications will be offered to all passengers affected by the incident.
Ola said, “We wish to place on record that the picketing was illegal and has no backing of the aviation unions whose leadership have embraced dialogue by planning to attend a mediatory meeting called for Tuesday, September 15, 2020, by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
“The management strongly condemns this action and once again assures all stakeholders of a safe and conducive working environment. We shall also protect the interest of the flying public for a safe, friendly and on time travelling experience.
“We are already working with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of Aviation and Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to resolve all pending issues with the unions and a section of the staff.
“Customers with valid tickets who could not fly on Monday can modify such tickets at no cost for future travels.”

EFCC Arrests Two Lecturers, 28 Others For Internet Fraud
The Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested two lecturers of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, Abdulahi Opashola and Adebisi Ademola, and 28 others over their alleged involvement in offences bordering on Internet fraud.
The 28 other suspects are Kingsley Essien, Tobiloba Adenuga, Tope Ayodele, Rasheed Mujib, Oladipo Opeyemi, Saadu Muktar, Oladejo Hammed, Hammed Tope, Ameachi Umenyi, Salauden Adam and Afolabi Gafar.
Others include Oladimeji Timi, Remilekun Adeolu, Audu John, David Momodu, Abdulkareem Samad, Adebiyi Sodiq, Dawodu Olusoji, Yusuf Amoo, Kehinde Olarenwaju, Philip Mike, Ademola Adebukola and Adeniyi Olamilekan.
The rest are Adeyemi Adedeji; Ajayi Teslem; Olawale Oladayo, Olasunkanmi Olawale and Adeleke Damilola.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the commission, Gbenga Adewoye, in Ilorin on Monday, the suspects were arrested at different locations within Kwara State following intelligence gathered by operatives of the anti-graft agency over their alleged involvement in the offence.
Operatives of the the EFCC, Ilorin zonal office, have arrested two lecturers of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa: Abdulahi Opashola and Adebisi Ademola and twenty-eight others over their alleged involvement in offences bordering on internet fraud.— EFCC Nigeria (@officialEFCC) September 14, 2020
The statement, which said that the commission was yet to analyse categories of Internet fraud committed by the suspects, added that efforts were on to arrest an herbalist suspected to have a link to the alleged offence.

A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Obadiah Mailafia, who honoured a third invitation by the Department of State Services has said that he hoped that the secret service will not invite him again for further questioning.
Mailafia honoured the invitation on Monday after an interview where he said a serving governor in Northern Nigeria was the commander of Boko Haram terror group, according to information he received from some former insurgents.

Following the interview, the National Broadcasting Commission fined Nigerian Info, the radio station that aired the comments.
Mailafia, who said some politicians want to silence him forever for speaking the truth, said he hoped this third invitation would be the last time he would be interrogated.

He arrived at the office of the DSS in company with his wife, lawyer and scores of supporters.
He was released after about three hours grilling by the secret police.
Speaking with journalists and his supporters after he was released, Mailafia said, “Thank you all for being here. Many have said the worst things and nobody invited them.
“I hope this will be the last time I will be invited to the DSS office. All that I am saying is that the killings must stop.”
The former CBN official had earlier said that he was willing to perish for speaking the truth, adding that his interview does not warrant continuous interrogation.
“I am ready to perish for speaking the mind of millions of Nigerians over the incessant killings of innocent citizens going on presently in the country,” Mailafia said.
