Murder At Night By Mahmud Yahaya

It is a known fact that whatever lives shall eventually die. Death is and has always being inevitable, regardless of one’s status, affiliation, age, piety or otherwise. Death has neither passion nor compassion.
If there was anything shocking on Thursday night, August 13 in Bauchi State, is the murder of Hon. Musa Mante Baraza, a member of representing Dass constituency in the Bauchi state House of Assembly. Mante was lying on his sick bed in his village Baraza recuperating from the pandemic – COVID-19 when some unknown gunmen sent him to the land of no return. These unknown men did not end their atrocity there. They went further to kidnap his wives and a year old child. Reports indicated that these unidentified gunmen were armed robbers.

While pondering on the matter, I was impelled by sudden impulse to ask these questions:
If they were armed robbers, why did they had to kill the lawmaker? Why abduct his family? Could this be politically motivated? Could they have been sent by someone? What do they stand gain by this devilish act?. Unfortunately, only these perpetrators of this heinous act can provide answers to these questions.
In accordance with Islamic injunctions, the remains of the late Hon. Musal Mante Baraza was buried at the Dass central burial ground after funeral prayers the following day. The funeral prayers were led by the Chief Imam of Dass Central Mosque with thousands of sympathisers, including the Emir of Dass, Alhaji Usman Bilyaminu Othman, Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt Hon Abubakar Suleiman, members of the Assembly and other personalities.
The demise of the law maker has shocked not only his relatives but the entire state of Bauchi, as the Bauchi State governor, Sen. Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, was reported to have said “Innalillahi Wainna Ilaihi Raji’un. I received the killing of our lawmaker by unknown gunmen with great shock and that has shown that we need to put extra efforts in collaboration with the security agencies to ensure the safety of our people.
“With this unfortunate incident, Bauchi State Government will work in close collaboration with security agencies to identify those involved in the killing so that they will face the full wrath of the law”. Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammedb described the demise of the lawmaker as a great loss to the state.
This was according to a statement by the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Muktar Gidado, Governor Mohammed stated this when he led top government officials on a condolence visit to the palace of Emir of Dass and the residence of the deceased.
The governor sympathized with the immediate family of the lawmaker, Dass Emirate Council and members of the state House of Assembly over the loss, promising to take stiffer measures to address security concerns in the area. He said the state government will work in collaboration with security agencies with a view to fishing out those involved in killing of the late. Mante Baraza for them to be brought to justice. He then prayed that Almighty Allah will receive the soul of the departed and comfort his family.Muktar Gidado added that the state government delegation to the funeral was led by the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mohammed Sadiq, who is from Dass Local Government Area.
Earlier, the Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, described the death of the late. Hon. Musa Mante Baraza, as shocking and a great loss to the state.
In his condolence message to the family of the deceased, people of Dass constituency and members of the Assembly. In a statement signed by his spokesman, Abdul Ahmad Burra. The Speaker said he was yet to recover from the trauma of the devastating news of the merciless murder of Baraza.
He, however, stated that he submits everything to Almighty Allah, who states in the Qur’an that every soul shall taste death.
Suleiman condemned the attack and murder of the lawmaker and vowed to work with security agencies in the state to fish out the perpetrators of the devilish act.
The Speaker described the deceased as a God-fearing person, humble and a dependable ally who served and related with people selflessly and honourably.According to him, the deceased lawmaker did not only dedicate his time but also deployed resources to the service of his constituents.
He added that the late Baraza diligently discharged his responsibilities as the chairman, House Committee on Public Petitions, declaring that the deceased contributed immensely to the business of the House.
“As member representing the good people of Dass, Hon. Mante dedicated his time and resources towards ensuring the well-being of his constituents. He was always at the forefront of serving the interest of his people and dear state.
“He lived a simple and exemplary life worthy of emulation. The fact that he had lived in his village interacting and serving his people, speaks volumes on how faithful and humble late Hon. Musa Mante Baraza was.
“As Chairman, House Committee on Public Petitions, Hon. Mante diligently and effectively discharged his responsibility by being so much dedicated and committed to finding solutions to many problems affecting people across the state.
“He has contributed immensely in the lawmaking business and other functions of Bauchi State House of Assembly.
“He was so much friendly and kind to all of us his colleagues and staff of the Assembly. Indeed, we will lose his elderly and statesmanly gestures, joviality and the jokes we always shared during plenary, meetings and other engagements,” the Speaker declared.
According to Suleiman, the deceased lawmaker died at a time that his family, the people of Dass constituency and the state, in general, needed him the most. He urged the bereaved family, colleagues and constituents to take solace and prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings and give those he left behind the fortitude to bear the painful and irreparable loss.
As the late. Hon. Musa Mante Baraza was laid to rest, one can see how he was described by different personalities. If he were a rascal, he would have been described as such. This should serve as an example not only to politicians, but to everybody.
Remember!
You may die or be killed, but your legacy and good work will live on till eternity.
May the soul of all the departed rest in paradise.

E2%80%98looted-funds%E2%80%99-not-interest-unilag-students Disagreement Between Babalakin, Ogundipe Over ‘Looted Funds’ Not In Interest Of UNILAG Students, Staff —COULSU

The Coalition Of University of Lagos Student Unionists has said that the ongoing fracas between embattled Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, and Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Dr Wale Babalakin, was not in the interest of students and staff of the institution.
COULSU in a statement by its Chairman, Adedeji Olayinka, urged students to dissociate themselves from defending and taking sides with any of the ‘two corrupt wings’ of the university’s administration but should condemn the duo and call for probe into the finances of the university.

The statement reads, “It should be noted that the present fracas between the wing of the Babalakin-led Council and the wing of the embattled Vice Chancellor is not in the general interest of students and staffs of the University of Lagos. This is because the real fight between the two wings which led to the removal of the Vice Chancellor is about who controls the looted funds of the university.
“While the embattled Vice Chancellor is extremely corrupt and has looted the university resources, we observed that Babalakin who is the prosecutor lacks sincerity and the prosecution is not to make the University of Lagos a better institution as posited by the council but rather to make Babalakin get a substantial parts of the university resources to himself and his cohorts in the council.
“That the endemic corruption in the system of University of Lagos has caused the generality of students a serious damage ranging from poor living conditions in the hostels to poor learning conditions in the lecture rooms. That under the leadership of the embattled Vice Chancellor, students of the university suffered serious extortion at all levels among which include the illegal GST fee, drug test fee for new students, outrageous faculty and departmental registration fee for new students, mandatory textbook and laboratory manual fee amongst others.
“That under the leadership of the embattled Vice Chancellor, despite collecting N25,500 accommodation fee per space for 8500 spaces which amounts to N216,750,000 annually and a total of N650,250,000 for (2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2019/2020 academic sessions), the university management failed to upgrade facilities in the hostels. Thus, the hostels are in despicable state with bedbug infestation, poor toilet facilities, poor water supply and other decadence. The DSS cells are much more conducive than the hostels in the university.”

Ondo Governor, Akeredolu, Not A Progressive For Abandoning Health Sector, Says Mimiko

Olusegun Mimiko, immediate-past governor of Ondo State, has described the incumbent governor of the state, Rotimi Akeredolu, as an unprogressive fellow for abandoning the state’s health sector to rot.
Mimiko said any government that does not meet the need of the masses was not progressive and should be kicked out.
He spoke while receiving deputy governor of the state, Mr Agboola Ajayi, who recently defected to the Zenith Labour Party, at his residence in Ondo town.

Ajayi had on Friday dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for ZLP after failing to secure the party’s governorship ticket for the October 10, 2020 poll.
Akeredolu decried the array of abandoned projects left behind by Mimiko in the state during his visit to OSAUSTECH in Okitipupa, describing his predecessor’s style of governance as a disgrace and disservice to the people.
Mimiko, however, noted that it was not yet time for him to talk on the failures of Akeredolu’s government in the state especially on the health and education sectors.
He said Akeredolu’s governnent was yet to achieve what his own administration did in less than four years.
Mimiko said the state needed to test a new government and asked his supporters to rally support for Ajayi, who is planning to run under the ZLP.
Ajayi said no progressive politician in the state would want to sleep or have a rest when the people were suffering.
He described the government of Akeredolu as a failure, stressing that there was need to change the narrative of governance in Ondo.

E2%80%98protect-crooks%E2%80%99-group-writes-buhari Malami Stalling High-profile Corruption Cases To ‘Protect Crooks’, Group Writes Buhari

Abubakar Malami

The Civil Society Network Against Corruption has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari about how the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has been stalling high-profile corruption cases to protect “crooks’.
The rights group informed the President that Malami takes over the prosecution of high-profile corruption cases in order to protect his allies from facing justice.
The group cited how Malami took over prosecution of the case of a former lawmaker, Dino Melaye, and how the AGF also technically took over the trial of former Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

EXPOSED: How Nigeria’s Attorney-General, Malami Stopped Prosecution Of Dino Melaye

CSNAC in a petition signed by its Chairman, Mr Olanrewaju Suraju, said the taking over of cases by Malami raises foul play and undermines the corruption mantra of the Buhari-administration.
Suraju added that Melaye’s alleged action was in gross contravention of the Code of Conduct for public officers by virtue of the above stated constitutional provision.

Properties Nigeria’s Attorney-General, Malami, Corruptly Acquired While In Office

The petition reads, “We were surprised at that development and suspected a foul play, considering the power of Attorney-General under Section 174 of the constitution is limited to instituting or taking over cases instituted in court and not “arresting an investigation” as was obvious in the case under reference
“The Code of Conduct Bureau is one of the Federal Executive bodies established by section 153 of the constitution.
“The CCB as an autonomous body is not subject to the control of any public officer or institution. But in violation of the constitution, Mr Abubakar Malami, the AGF technically took over the prosecutorial function of CCB and technically arresting its constitutional duties, sabotaged and frustrated the constitutional functions of the Bureau by converting it into an extension of the Office of Attorney-General who may decide to prosecute or decline prosecution of any case.
“You will recall that the Chairman of the Presidential Panel for Recovery of Public Property was suspended last year by your office on the recommendation of the AGF. Even though the President did not dissolve the panel or remove other members, the AGF has disbanded the panel and seized all the files and assets recovered by the Panel without further prosecution of any of the cases handed over to the ministry by the panel.”
He also stated that contrary to Section 30 of the EFCC Act, which empowers Secretary of the EFCC to sell assets confiscated on the orders of courts without any amendment to this law, the AGF issued special regulations in 2019 which attempted to confer on his office the powers to take over assets confiscated by the EFCC and sell them.
The group also accused Malami of technically taking over the EFCC, saying that based on the recommendation of the AGF, the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu has been suspended while a Judicial Commission of Enquiry is currently investigating the allegations of corruption leveled against him by the AGF.
“The AGF has taken advantage of the ongoing probe to technically take over the EFCC. He has placed 12 officers of the EFCC on suspension including the Commission Secretary, without following due process of fair hearing,” CSNAC said.
Suraju said the actions of Malami were an extension of the reckless abuse of the power of nolle prosequi the AGF regularly employs to discontinue corruption cases being pursued by the anti-graft agencies.
“Several civil society and anti-corruption bodies have documented the several corruption cases that have been discontinued by the AGF and forwarded same to your office,” he added.

Ghali Na’abba

BREAKING: DSS Invites Former Speaker, Ghali Umar Na’abba, For Criticising Buhari’s Government

In a statement on Sunday, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, spokesperson for the CNG, said the continuous attempt to suppress the existence of the right of freedom of expression of Nigerians by the Buhari-led government wws exposing its failure in statesmanship and political craftsmanship.
The statement reads, “The CNG finds it worrying that the current administration is becoming more and more intolerant of opposition and criticism and gradually dragging the country towards becoming a police state. We find this attempt to harass Na Abbah, a senior citizen and critical stakeholder in the nation’s democratic process, a brutal encroachment on the universal citizens right to freedom of expression which is a fundamental characteristic of any democratic state.
“By its continuous attempt to suppress the existence of the right to freedom of expression which includes the freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by the public authority, President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is exposing its failure in sportsmanship, statesmanship and political craftsmanship.
“It is ridiculous that those who run this government who happened to have benefited the most from the previous administration’s tolerant disposition should be the ones denying others the same right they enjoyed. The CNG repudiates this unhealthy, undemocratic trend of government’s exercise of power through security agencies to impose restrictions on citizens’ mobility, or on their freedom to express or communicate political or other views and hold it unacceptable.
“We insist that every Nigerian’s right to freedom of expression which is not only a primary cornerstone of democracy, but also prerequisite for the enjoyment of many of the other rights and freedoms ensured in our constitution and international conventions must be respected. We therefore find it absolutely unacceptable for a people who in no way bore the brunt of the struggle for the return to democracy to be hellbent now on scuttling it.”

A Northern Governor As Commander Of Boko Haram? By Ozodinukwe Okenwa

SOC Okenwa

The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the last presidential poll, last year, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, dropped a bombshell recently that shocked some folks and baffled some more others. In an exclusive interview he granted the Lagos-based Nigeria Info 99.3FM’s programme called “Morning Cross Fire” he had talked about terrorism, regular killings of Christians in Southern Kaduna and possible civil war.
During the controversial interview he had declared that some repentant Boko Haram terrorists had told him confidentially that an incumbent northern governor was the commander of the mass-killing jihadist organization! That declaration must have sent alarm bells ringing loudly in power circles. He equally alleged that the notorious armed and dangerous sectarian group had infiltrated the southern part of the country with the aim of igniting a war.
His declaration went thus: “Some of us also have our intelligence networks. I have met with some of the bandits; we have met with some of their high commanders – one or two who have repented – they have sat down with us not once, not twice….They told us that one of the northern governors is the commander of Boko Haram in Nigeria….Boko Haram and the bandits are one and the same. They have a sophisticated network…..During this lockdown their planes were moving up and down as if there was no lockdown….They were moving ammunition, moving money, and distributing them across different parts of the country.”

SOC Okenwa

An anonymous Northern sitting governor commanding Boko Haram? How? Why? What then is the role of the fugitive invincible Abubakar Shekau? Ordinary figure head or field commander? Or could it be that the Boko Haram elements had sponsored one of their own as governor who now leads them from the government house?
Mailafia made it clear that he was not kidding by saying what he said. Yet what he said sounded more of an infantile prank than a serious submission by a serious character.
