E2%80%94sdp Buhari Must Confront Security Challenges To Prevent Collapse Of Nigeria’s Democracy —SDP National Chairman

Prof Tunde Adeniran

Prof Tunde Adeniran, National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately tackle the security challenges currently affecting the country to prevent the breakdown of democracy in Nigeria.
Prof Adeniran, who warned of imminent danger in the country, said Nigerians were living in interesting times as general insecurity presently defines our environment and collective existence.
He said, “To prevent a shipwreck of our hard earned democracy at this critical juncture of our national life also requires that we confront the other threats of worsening insecurity and dwindling economy in the face of serious public health crisis occasioned by the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.

Prof Tunde Adeniran

“It is true that the rising poverty and declining well-being of the citizenry among other national challenges are making many Nigerians lower their guards while some states are considering some compromise regarding protocols expected to be adhered to.
“We appeal to the states concerned and the Federal Government to please save the people of Nigeria from the possible disaster of self-annihilation if necessary protocols are not enforced against the spread of the deadly virus.”
The SDP National Chairman noted that some APC politicians were bent on setting Nigeria on the path of retrogression through the perennial cycle of conflicts and confusion.
He added that as the country faces crisis in the political and health sectors, the economy should also be tackled.

Ondo Community Raises Alarm Over Ilegal Structure Causing Environmental Problems

Some landlords at Alabere Oloruntele Community in Oke-Igbo, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, have pleaded with the state government to rescue them from environmental degradation in view of torrential rainfall in the state.
Spokesperson for the community, Mr Kolawole Oyekunle, told SaharaReporters on Friday that the problem was being caused by an illegal construction of a structure on a road leading to their community.
Oyekunle noted that the environmental problem had led to the damage of several buildings in the area.

He expressed fear that the community might be submerged due to illegal dredging, erection of building on the setback and land reclamation if government failed to take urgent step to save their properties.
He said, “We have to quickly cry out now because some buildings are being destroyed as a result of this incident and it’s still raining heavily. We need to avoid a looming disaster.
“We need to call the attention of the government to this considering the landscape and ecological challenges of the communities which has rugged hilly terrains and other geomorphic features.”

According to him, officials of the Ondo State Ministry of Lands and Housing had been notified on several occasions but were only feigning ignorance to their plight.
He said, “We want the intervention of these regulatory bodies of the Federal Government to make sure that things are in order and lives and properties of people are safe.”
When contacted, Deputy Director of Ondo State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development; Mr Ajanaku Osolaja, said the government was taking steps to address the environmental issue and would be meeting the communities soon.

CUPP Condemns Nigerian Government Over Arrest Of Spokesperson, Demands Immediate Release

The Coalition of United Political Parties has berated the Nigerian Government over the arrest of its spokesperson, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, on Thursday.
Addressing journalists on Friday, head of CUPP Contact and Mobilisation and National Chairman of Action Alliance Party, Kenneth Udeze, demanded that Ugochinyere be released immediately and unconditionally.
He said, “The Nigeria Police must learn to obey the direct order of the court. That is how democracy is practiced. Rule of law and constitutional democracy demand that the court must be obeyed by every person or authority which is before it.”
The CUPP alleged that Ugochinyere’s arrest was instigated by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, over a matter that is in court and for which the court had directly and in clear terms restrained the police from arresting or detaining him in any manner.

He was arrested at the INEC headquarters while attending a meeting in preparation for his party’s primaries for the Edo and Ondo governorship elections.
“It is a shame that in Femi Gbajabiamila’s democracy, the orders of court should not be obeyed and nobody should question his supreme authority. Otherwise how would Mr Gbajabiamila who was represented in court on Wednesday June 17, 2020 in the same suit where the court had nullified the resolution of the House and his actions still go in defiance of the court to author a petition to the police?
“The police have been served with the order of the court and all other processes in the matter and indeed yesterday before the arrest, the bailiff of the court had also served another hearing notice on the police notifying them of the next adjourned date which is 30th June, 2020. The DG DSS has filed his processes and appeared in court but the Inspector-General Police has refused to file anything or appear in court. We do not want to believe that he is being teleguided,” CUPP said.

The coalition further said that the harassment of Ugochinyere was manifesting following his stance against the controversial sponsorship of the Control of Infectious Diseases Bill, adding that it must stop.
The CUPP, however, called on the leadership of All Progressives Congress to call Gbajabiamila to order, adding, “The leadership of APC should call him to order now or the membership of the House should immediately take action and save the House further battering of its image by impeaching Mr Gbajabiamila.
It added, “Despite the nullification of the proceedings of the ad hoc committee and the resolutions of the House by the FCT High Court, the Speaker continued to misdirect the House to the extent of intimidating Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court Abuja who has now recused himself from the case based on the verbal assault from Mr Gbajabiamila’s goons.
“It is the demand of the CUPP that Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere be released immediately and unconditionally. The Nigeria Police must learn to obey the direct order of the court. That is how democracy is practiced. Rule of law and constitutional democracy demand that the court must be obeyed by every person or authority which is before it.”

APC Denies Leadership Vacuum, Picks Holes In Giadom’s Court Order

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress has declared that the party has no leadership vacuum despite the alleged ex parte order granted in favour of Victor Giadom, its Deputy National Secretary.
The party disclosed this on Friday in Abuja in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary,  Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.
The party maintained that there was no leadership vacuum in the fold as being speculated in certain quarters.
The statement reads, “We assure our teeming members that the APC has no leadership vacuum. By the constitution of the party, Senator Ajimobi has assumed the role of National Chairman following the decision of the Court of Appeal upholding the interlocutory injunction suspending the National Chairman from office.

“Majority of members of the NWC are determined to preserve our party’s zero tolerance for impunity and will continue to uphold the law in fulfillment of the mandate given to us by members of our great party.”
The party insisted that none of the four defendants named on the order obtained by Giadom were served with the originating processes in the suit.
The statement added that the party became aware of the existence of the purported order on June 17, 2020 through its circulation on social media.
It stated, “In furtherance of the above and complying with Article 14.2 (iii) of the APC constitution, Senator Ajimobi assumed the position of acting National Chairman on March 13, 2020. Article 14.2 (iii) provides: The Deputy National Chairman shall act as National Chairman in the absence of the National Chairman from his zone.
“In essence, there was no vacancy to fill on the said March 16, 2020 as Senator Ajimobi had already assumed the role of Acting National Chairman.”
