The Peoples Democratic Party has described the establishment of Amotekun as a direct vote of no confidence on President Muhammadu Buhari’s handling of security in the country.
The National Working Committee of the PDP stated that the President Buhari-led administration had not only failed to end insurgency and terrorism in the country, but also fuelled disunity and acts of violence among citizens.
The party in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, also held that the execution of Rev Andimi remains a sad commentary on the inability of government to stand for citizens at very crucial moments.
According to the PDP, if President Buhari had handled the security well, the situation would not have degenerated to the creation of Operation Amotekun by South-West governors.
The statement reads, “The PDP recalls that the Buhari-led Federal Government had failed to prosecute the masterminds of the mass killings in Benue, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Kogi, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, Kaduna, Ekiti and other parts of the country under the current administration.
“Moreover, the body language, brazen acts of nepotism as well as divisive and incendiary comments by officials in the Buhari administration have continued to fuel disunity, acts of violence and insecurity in various parts of our nation.
“The situation would not have degenerated to this level if the Buhari was living up to his billing on security, including listening to wise counsel by well-meaning Nigerians to rejig his security high command.
“The PDP holds that it is clear that security of lives and property in our nation has gone beyond what the insensitive, divisive and incompetent Buhari administration can guarantee.”

E2%80%99s-islamic-council-condemns-killing-adamawa-christian-leader-terrorists Nigeria’s Islamic Council Condemns Killing Of Adamawa Christian Leader By Terrorists

The National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has expressed shock over the killing of the Christian Association of Nigeria chairman in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawan Andimi, by Boko Haram.
The council described the murder as barbaric and provocative, adding that it was a ploy by the insurgents to incite Christians against Muslims in the country, a report by PUNCH said.
Andimi was abducted by Boko Haram on January 3 and subsequently killed on Monday despite a N50 million ransom offered to the terrorists.
The NSCIA in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, by its Head of Media and Communication, Aselemi Ibrahim, condoled with CAN and the family of the deceased and also called on government and security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities of protection of lives and property.
The statement reads, “The council hereby expresses her heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of Pastor Lawan Andimi in particular and the leadership and members of the Christian Association of Nigeria in general.
“We equally want to seize this opportunity to appeal to the leadership of CAN in Nigeria to be wary of the comments and statements it puts out in the public domain, so as not to play into the antics of the enemy.
“We should think through and be sure that our comments are in the interest of national peace, security and cohesion.”

Isheri Estate Residents Urge Lagos, Ogun Governments To Provide Drainage System In Community

Isheri Estate residents in Lagos and Ogun have called on the state governments to do a proper channelisation of the community and provide basic infrastructure in the area to prevent future occurrence of the flood that ravaged the community in 2019.
They warned that “as it stands today, neither Lagos nor Ogun State could ever muster the resources needed to resettle the people who have built houses in the area, it is cheaper to solve the flooding issue than to contemplate the other options”.
In a statement by Chairman of Riverview Estate Residents and Stakeholders Association, Mr Abayomi Akinde, the residents said that the two state governments erred in allocating the land without first making provision for how water would be channelled in the community and without providing durable infrastructure.
The community however, said that it was not too late for the governments to do the right thing.
It said channelling the water now could be capital intensive but the area was capable of paying for its own development several times over if the two governments could come together and involve stakeholders that have a clear understanding of the issues at stake.
According to the residents, people were not complaining of flooding in the past because it occurred less frequently before the construction of the Oyan dam, adding that there were historical facts that the dam whose function included flood control had contributed significantly to flooding over the years due to its poor management.
The community said that any suggestion that people should give up their houses was in bad taste and an obvious sign of lack of compassion for people who innocently bought into government schemes, invest all of their savings to build a home without knowing the danger they faced.

Groups Kick As Lagos Government Forcefully Evicts Takwa Bay Residents

The Nigerian Slum/Informal Settlement Federation, and Justice and Empowerment Initiatives have condemned the demolition and forced eviction of Okun Ayo and Tarkwa Bay communities in Lagos.
Residents of the two communities were evicted by the Nigerian Navy acting on “orders from above” on Tuesday.
The groups held that the eviction was carried out in brazen disregard for due process of law and other fundamental rights guaranteed the residents by the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and other human rights laws.
According to the group, personnel of the Nigerian Navy stormed the communities, shot sporadically into the air while giving residents one hour to pack their belongings and exit the community.
In a statement jointly signed by Megan S. Chapman, Mohammed Zanna, Akinrolabu Samuel, Bimbo Oshobe of Justice and Empowerment Initiatives, and Nigerian Slum/Informal Settlement Federation, they posited that forced evictions was a gross violation of international human rights law binding on Nigeria.
The statement reads, “Several persons reported violence and that at least one resident was shot in the leg and excavators reportedly began working in Okun Ayo community bringing down buildings, with military stationed to stop any entrance to that area.

“Over the following hours and up through nightfall, thousands of residents packed what belongings they could salvage and struggled to find boats to leave the community, which is accessible only by water.”
Many evicted residents resorted to sleeping on jetties, as they had no alternative accommodation.
The groups stated that the number of communities forcibly evicted by the Nigerian Government through the Nigerian Navy since December 24, 2019 was at least two dozens.
They added, “The other peaceful island communities include Abagbo, Abule Elepa, Abule Glass, Ajakoji, Akaraba, Bobukoji, Ebute Oko, Fashola, Idi Mango, Ilaje, Inangbe / Ilado, Kopiamy, Ogunfemi, Oko-Kate, Okun Alfa, Okun Babakati, Okun Gbogba, Okun Ilase, Okun Kobena, Sankin, Sapo Okun, and Tokunbo, among others.
“Still other member communities of the Nigerian Slum/Informal Settlement Federation on the islands nearby are living under fear of imminent eviction should these actions continue.”
The groups relied on a 2017 Lagos High Court judgment that ruled that forced evictions without adequate notice and resettlement violates the right to dignity enshrined in Section 34 of the constitution.
They urged the Nigerian Government to end forced eviction and also put in place resettlement plans for residents of evicted communities.

Tinubu Finally Speaks On Amotekun, Says Initiative Not Threat To National Unity

After days of silence, former Lagos State governor and national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has given his views on the newly established security outfit by governors of the South-West named Amotekun.
According to Tinubu, the creation of the new outfit is not in any way a threat to national unity as claimed in some quarters.
In a statement on Wednesday, Tinubu said, “Those claiming that this limited, inoffensive addition to security threatens the republic have taken themselves upon a madcap excursion.
“Those claiming that the Federal Government seeks to terribly suppress the South-west have also lost their compass.
“Those who occupy these two extremes have sunken into the dark recesses of fear and political paranoia that can undo a nation if such sentiments are allowed to gestate.
“Amotekun is a matter of serious concern entitled to sober thought. However, it has been turned into a political tug-of-war.
“Question those in favour of Amotekun. Most have but the vaguest notion about it. They know few details yet vigorously attribute to its opponents the most negative intentions. Ask those who oppose Amotekun, they are equally ignorant of its provisions. They oppose the initiative not on its merits but merely because it was proposed by their political opponents or because they don’t see an avenue for personal gain from it.
“Until now, I have deliberately maintained a studied silence regarding Amotekun. Many have tried to goad my swift public reaction. Those who have taken this road did so not because they care about Amotekun or even the people it intends to help protect. They did so knowing this had become a delicate and emotional issue for many.
“If truly I am a political leader as I am often described, then I have not the luxury of hasty, ill-conceived utterances.
“I believe in this nation and its benign prospects. Equally, I do not cow to the demands of those who press for me to make a premature statement on an important issue.
“Again, that is a game devised by those who care more about political cleverness than the quality of governance. I chose to talk when my position has been made ripe by a collection of the facts and a reasonable assessment of those facts.”
