Prof. Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised African countries to restrategise their approaches in fighting corruption.
Jega gave the advise while reviewing a book titled: “Curbing Electoral Spending” launched by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on Monday in Abuja.
The launched was to mark the 2019 International Anti-Corruption Day organised by the commission in collaboration with Nigeria Shippers Council, Maritime and Transport Stakeholders.

Unions in Ekiti Varsity protest sack of workers, shut down institution
…say it’s fight to finish

Academic and sundry activities at the Ekiti state University Ado Ekiti were on Monday disrupted by aggrieved workers over mass retrenchment of staff of the institution.
The management of the university had sacked over 600 workers institution who alleged to have been illegally recruited between 2016 and 2017, during the tenure of Governor Ayodele Fayose, have been sacked.
Discrepancies were said to have been found in the certificates of some of the affected workers, while others were also found not to possess the requisite certificates from the primary level.

When William Shakespeare pontificated many years ago that some people are born great, others achieve greatness, while others have greatness thrust upon them, he had the likes of the Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, the seventh Vice-Chancellor of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, in mind.
The Comrade-professor’s odyssey in life since his birth shows that he is a naturally born great man. This is not to say there were no vicissitudes at the period of his birth and boyhood till he became a professor.

Fowler writes Boss Mustapha for reappointment before replacement
The former chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Tunde Fowler prior to the announcement of his replacement Monday writes boss Mustapha for a reappointment.
This was revealed in a letter obtained by Vanguard, dated 9th December, 2019 and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.
The letter which was signed by the former FIRS chairman titled, “RE: NOTIFICATION OF EXPIRATION OF TENURE AS EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN, FEDERAL INLAND REVENUE SERVICE” stated; “…I wish to present myself for reappointment for a second term.”
Fowler’s tenure of four years ended Monday but the constitution allows its renewal at the discretion of the president.

Yuletide: Police ban use of fireworks in Enugu
The Police Command in Enugu State has reiterated its ban on the use of fireworks, knockout and bangers this Yuletide.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Enugu.
Amaraizu noted that the ban was due to their explosives safety and security implications.

He said: “Their usages are capable of diverting the attention of security agencies from knowing when things are going wrong in our environment.

Why Osinbajo was absent from Wole Soyinka award ceremony
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has frowned at the arrest of Omoyele Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow and for this reason, has rejected an award from the Wole Soyinka Centre.
The Vice President who was a keynote speaker in the United Arab Emirates explained why he refused to accept the award for his achievements in the justice system of Nigeria.
In a statement by his spokesman, Laolu Akande, the Vice President said in view of the developments on Friday in the Sowore case, I think it would be insensitive and inappropriate to attend the ceremony.

Sowore: Akeredolu condemns DSS’ invasion of courtroom
Says no explanation anybody can give
Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has said there is no explanation that anybody can give to justify the manner in which operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the court to rearrest Omoyele Sowore on Friday.
Sowore’s rearrest at the federal high court in Abuja less than 24 hours after he was released following detention that lasted 124 days is condemnable.
The presidency had defended this action, saying Sowore is a person of interest to the secret police.
