Prepare For Extreme Heat, LASEPA Warns Lagos Residents

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has advised Lagos residents to get ready to experience extreme heat in the coming days.
General Manager of LASEPA, Adedolapo Fasawe, in a statement urged residents to ensure adequate ventilation at homes and offices in order to mitigate the intensity of the prevailing heatwave.
Fasawe also advised Lagosians to adequately prepare for the heat intensity associated with the dry season, which had manifested globally as heatwaves with serious public health implications.
She said that Lagos, being a highly urbanised city, had a higher risk of increased warming due to the heat.
She stated, “High rate of fire and flooding incidents are some of the effects of heatwaves, and this underscores the need to desist from burning refuse, being a contributory factor to a high rate of heatwaves.
“Other factors that contribute to heatwaves include the use of poorly-serviced generators and use of ozone-depleting materials, all of which add to greenhouse gas emissions.”

E2%80%99s-continued-detention BREAKING: International Group, Clooney Foundation, Condemns Sowore’s Continued Detention

International human rights group, Clooney Foundation for Justice, has condemned the continued detention of pro-democracy campaigner and Publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, by the Department of State Services – Nigeria’s secret police.
In a statement on Friday, the group said that its TrialWatch initiative has been monitoring the trial of Sowore in Nigeria and was deeply concerned about his situation.
Co-President of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, Amal Clooney, called on the Nigerian Government to immediately release Sowore, who on Thursday was designated a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.
Clooney said, “It is outrageous that Nigeria continues to imprison a journalist and presidential candidate after a court had ordered his release.
“TrialWatch will continue to monitor Sowore’s trial and calls on the authorities to implement the court’s order as soon as possible.”
The international rights group said it will monitor Sowore’s upcoming hearing set for December 5, 2019.

Sowore, famed globally for exposing Nigeria’s corrupt politicians, was arrested in Lagos on August 3, 2019 for calling on Nigerians to take to the streets in peaceful demonstrations to demand a better country from the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The government is accusing him of insulting Buhari and planning to bring down his regime – charges observers around the world have described as baseless.
Despite two separate orders by the Federal High Court in Abuja directing his release after meeting stringent bail conditions, the DSS has refused to release Sowore, casting a huge shadow over the human rights record of Buhari’s regime.

JUST IN: Police Disperse Pro, Anti-Oshiomhole Protesters In Abuja

The police have dispersed both anti and pro-Adams Oshiomhole protesters at the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja.
The protest nearly resorted to fisticuffs when the placards-carrying demonstrators engaged each other in war songs, leading to violent confrontations.
It took the timely intervention of armed policemen stationed around the secretariat, who fired teargas canisters, for the protesters to disperse.
A group loyal to the embattled chairman of the APC had stormed the venue of the National Executive Committee meeting of the party chanting solidarity songs in support of Oshiomhole, while the other group insisted that he must resign from office or be forced to do so.

E2%80%99m-not-running-another-term-so-i-can-afford-be-reckless-says-buhari BREAKING: I’m Not Running For Another Term, So I Can Afford To Be Reckless, Says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he “can afford to be reckless because” he would not be needing the votes of Nigerians again in another election.
Buhari made the declaration on Friday during the National Executive Committee meeting of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
He said that apart from the fact that age was no longer on his side, he would not seek a third term in office because it was not backed or supported by the Nigerian constitution.
Buhari said, “I am not going to make mistake of attempting a third term or whatever term.
“Besides age, I swore by the holy book that I believe in and will go by the constitution.
“I know I am in my last term and I can afford to be reckless because I am not going to ask for anybody’s vote.”
In recent days, there have insinuations by some politicians that Buhari was preparing the way for a third term in office.
Though those around him had always denied such moves, Buhari’s statement on Friday may have put paid to any such talk.

Probe Protest Against Sowore, Falana, HEDA Tells National Assembly

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda has asked the National Assembly to probe the protest staged against Omoyele Sowore and Femi Falana (SAN).
A group had staged a protest in support of the defiance of court order by the Department of State Services not to release Sowore.
In a letter addressed to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, HEDA urged the National Assembly to uncover the identities of the protesters since the protest may have been sponsored with public funds.
It added that the protest was an act of corruption when young people were being lured to earn a living by subverting the principles of democracy.
“This is another case of misuse of public funds and corruption. How much of funds were given to the protesters and where did the resources come from?
“The organisers of the protest which called itself Save Nigeria Movement must have been sponsored by anti-democracy forces.

Court Order For Release Of Sowore Not Subject To Approval By DSS –Falana

“This in itself is a threat to democracy”, a statement by HEDA’s Chairman, Mr Olanrewaju Suraju, stated.
“This is a dangerous trend in the history of Nigeria for a group to be protesting against the enforcement of the ruling of a Federal court asking the DSS to release detained activists.
“Disobedience of court order is the worst thing that can happen to democracy.
“The action of the DSS has diminished the confidence of Nigerians in the democratic process. The danger is the threat of the DSS to the Judiciary,” Suraju added.
