Policemen Force Man To Withdraw N715,000 For Them, Threaten To Deal With Him

Four policemen in Lagos have been accused of extorting one Kareem Damilari Jamiu of N715,000.
Jamiu, who lives in Sagamu, Ogun State, was arrested on Monday by the policemen.
The law enforcement officials, one of them identified only as Kelvin, were reported to have forced Jamiu to part with the money after arresting and accusing him of being a cultist and Internet fraudster (yahoo yahoo).
They took Jamiu to a school after the arrest was made instead of a police station.
They threatened not to release him until he cooperated and bailed himself.
The policemen initially demanded N105,000 as bail and after paying the requested sum, they demanded that they see his bank account balance, after which, they demanded more money.
“They demanded for N105,000 as bail, which they collected.
“The money was withdrawn at a filling station but they were not satisfied and they asked him to log into his mobile app for them to see his bank balance,” narrated Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director of Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, who was familiar with the matter.
Nwanguma added that the officers upon seeing that he still had some money in his account, drove him to Ikeja, somewhere opposite the Police Headquarters where they forced him to release his ATM and to disclose his PIN to them and they used a POS to withdraw the additional sum of N610,000 from his account.
Narrating his bitter ordeal, Jamiu said, “They saw that I had enough money in my account which doesn’t belong to me and they got mad at me and took me back to the POS and withdraw all the money.
“I was shouting at them that the money was not for me, that the 105, 000 wass what I can afford. But they said if I should say anything they would beat me.
“I did N200,000 transfer twice and they still took me to a POS to withdraw another one again, which makes it the total of 715,000.”
Bbeingefore releasing him, the police officers warned Jamiu not to report what happened to anybody or risk  killed.
Jamiu’s mother was also threatened by one of the police officers, vowing that Jamiu would be seriously dealt with except he leaves the shore of the country.
RULAAC, a non-governmental human rights advocacy organization committed to promoting rule of law, law enforcement accountability, and transparent and responsible policing, has sent a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, calling for an investigation into the matter.
Nwanguma said in his t thypreliminary investigation, he called one of the mobile numbers of one of the officers involved in the extortion.
He said, “I called the number and the officer spoke to me admitting that he was in the team that came to arrest the young man but denied using his ATM to withdraw his money using a POZ.
“Shortly after I spoke with the officer, the young man called me and reported that the officer called his mother and threatened to deal with her son for reporting them to a lawyer
RULAAC urged the IGP to “order a prompt, impartial and exhaustive investigation to identify the officers responsible for these rogue activities akin to kidnapping, hostage taking and robbery”.
He also demanded that a full refund of the money extorted from the victim and the officers are “subjected to appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with the Police Act and other relevant laws.”

Four years after returning $12,200 of a passenger found in one of the toilets at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, the Nigerian Government on Tuesday rewarded a cleaner, Mrs Josephine Ugwu, with an apartment and an award for her honesty.
The government said it gave Ugwu the apartment and award in recognition of her integrity in the discharge of her duties.
Recall that Ugwu, a staff of a cleaning company at the Lagos Airport, in 2015 found $12,200, which a passenger forgot inside a toilet in the facility and returned it to security officials at the airport.
About two years ago, the Lagos State House of Assembly recognised her with an award and gifts, while several other organisations also applauded her honesty.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria offered her a job in one of its departments, Aviation Security.
On Tuesday in Abuja, Ugwu had a handshake with President Muhammadu Buhari where she received an award.
A statement by the General Manager, Corporate Communications, FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, said, “Ugwu was subsequently given automatic employment by the authority in recognition of her honesty and exemplary conducts.

E2%80%93buhari Nigeria More Of Gas Producer Than Oil –Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said Nigeria was more of a gas producing state than an oil.
Buhari, who said this while receiving the Special Envoy of the President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, at the State House, Abuja, lamented that if Nigeria had followed plans by paying more attention to the gas sector, the country would have been earning more money from the product than it is currently doing from oil now.
The Special Envoy, Gabriel Mbega Obiang Lima, had brought a message from his President on the forthcoming meeting of Heads of State of gas exporting nations, which Equatorial Guinea would be hosting.
Buhari said, “We share a lot of things in common with Equatorial Guinea. These include geographical neighbourliness and neighbourliness in terms of resources.
“Nigeria is more of a gas producing, rather than oil producing country. That fact had long been established.
“If we had followed our own plans laid out in the 1970s for the gas sector, we should have had 12 trains by early 1980s instead of being on just six trains now.”

Rape: Warn Your Children Against Indecent Dressing, Christian Association Of Nigeria Tells Parents

google

The Christian Association of Nigeria has called on parents across the country to warn their children against dressing indecently so as not to invite rapists.
Chairman of CAN (North Central Zone), Rev Israel Akanji, gave the warning in Abuja on Tuesday during a summit organised by the Women’s Wing of Christian Council of Nigeria.
According to him, churches must come up with tough measures against indecent dressing, adding that it was against the teachings of the Bible.
Akanji said, “When people wear mini dresses, sometimes they even wear it to church we must speak against it.
“Some of us try not to talk about it because we feel if we talk to them, they may not return to our churches.
“The church has to come up with tough measures against indecent dressing; indecent dressing must not be accepted in the church of Christ.
“I want to appeal to parents that while we are waiting for a law that will deal with rapists (I know that laws exist right now), they must warn their children.
“Some children dress in such a way that they appear as if they are inviting rapists to their lives.
“They are almost naked, they expose body parts that some people cannot control themselves.
“Let us return to the culture of decent dressing, it may not stop but it will minimise it.”

E2%80%93pdp Ondo 2020: We Won’t Allow Repeat Of “Electoral Fraud” In Kogi, Bayelsa –PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has vowed to resist any attempt by the All Progressives Congress to repeat the “electoral fraud” perpetrated in the just concluded governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states during next year’s governorship poll in Ondo State.
National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, who stated this on Tuesday in Akure, capital of Ondo, while receiving some new members to the party’s fold, said Saturday’s election in both states was turned to a war and marred by several electoral malpractices.
Secondus, who was represented by Southwest Chairman of the party, Eddy Olafeso, noted that the APC had destroyed the good legacies laid down by the PDP.
He said, “The party (APC) has destroyed everything called Nigeria. You all saw what they did in Kogi and Bayelsa states in last Saturday’s governorship election.
“I know Ondo State would have to resist such electoral fraud. I know the PDP would not allow such charade here. We won’t at all.
“I am sure there is even more awareness here and the people are more politically conscious in Ondo State unlike in Kogi or Bayelsa states.
“They have stolen enough and we all must resist them doing same as our people prepares for next year’s governorship election in Ondo.”

Release Names Of 80,000 Ghost Workers In Police, Court Orders IGP

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to release the details of the 80,115 ghost officers said to have been discovered in police formations and command in 2018.
Justice Binta Nyako in a judgment on Tuesday ordered Adamu to release the information to a civil society organisation, Centre for Social Justice, which earlier applied for it but was denied access by police authorities.
The judge, therefore, ordered the police boss to immediately release to the group the information including names and contact addresses of the “ghost officers” and their ranks.
The judge, according to a report by PUNCH, also ordered the IGP to release the bank account numbers, bank verification numbers, monthly salaries and emoluments and the total money paid to each one of them.
The court also ordered the IGP to pay to CSJ, the sum of N500,000 as damages for earlier denying the group access to the information.
Lead Director of CSJ, Mr Eze Onyekpere, in a statement on Tuesday said that his organisation sent a Freedom of Information request to the IGP on April 3, 2018, requesting information on the details of the list of 80,115 ghost officers.
He noted that the then Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, had disclosed the information about the existence of the ghost workers in her presentation on the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System to the Federal Executive Council on March 21, 2018.
The IGP was said to have failed to release the information and gave reasons for the inability of the police to grant the request to CSJ.

Re-open Borders, Nigerian Traders Are Also Suffering, Ghana’s Ex-President Tells Buhari

Ex-President of Ghana, John Mahama, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to re-open Nigeria’s border with neighbouring countries so that economic activities can thrive in West Africa.
Mahama made the plea while delivering a lecture during a book launch in Lagos, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
He said Nigerian businesses that relied on supply from other West African countries were suffering.
Mahama said, “I am sure that businesses in Nigeria that rely on supplies from these countries are also suffering.
“With the signing of the joint border task force agreement between Nigeria and her neighbours, I will like to take this opportunity to appeal to Nigeria to open up her border so that economic activities can resume.
“ECOWAS was set up to foster the ideal of collective self-sufficiency for its member states.
“As a trading union, it is also meant to create a single, large trading bloc through economic cooperation.
“Integrated economic activities as envisaged in the area revolve around but are not limited to industry, transport, telecommunications, energy, agriculture, natural resources, commerce, monetary and financial issues, social as well as cultural matters.”
