Prominent Nigerians Support President Buhari On Border Closure

Nigeria Cameroon border

Nigeria Cameroon border

Prominent Nigerians have supported the closure of Nigeria’s land border, a directive of President Muhammadu Buhari.
They showed their support on Saturday at the 2019 Investiture of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria in Lagos.
A former Secretary-General, Commonwealth of Nations, Emeka Anyaoku, said that closure of the border would boost the economic development of the country.
He said, “We should support our foreign border closure by President Muhammadu Buhari and its ultimate importance to the home-grown policy.
“It is clear that the abundant variety of Nigeria’s natural resources and our large population constitute adequate phases for the country’s economic prosperity if the federal and state governments can show a determination to provide the necessary policy and practical support.
“And also if our citizens can be persuaded or even coerced through regulation into curbing their appetite for imported, rather than locally produced goods, there will be a tremendous turn around in the economy.”
Also supporting the move, Director-General, West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management, Baba Musa, urged Nigerians to encourage and understand the reason for the border closure.
He said, “The border closure was not an attempt to stifle business or discourage manufacturers from selling their goods.
“It is to check smuggling and multiplication of arms that are coming in through the borders to create insecurity in the country and to enable genuine traders to move their goods and services through the normal channel and pay the appropriate duties and charges.
“It’s a welcome development, we have seen the outcome.
“Nigerians should encourage this until such a time that our neighbours come to terms, on the need to protect our borders from smuggling and activities that create insecurity.”
According to the Chairman, Board of Fellows and Practice Licence, Bayo Olugbemi, the country could surmount its economic challenges if people cultivate the right mind and are liberated.
He said, “Most of the economies in the world today that are doing well do not have the resources that Nigeria has.
“All they have is human capability and that has come to play in the multinational revolution, which is leveraging on the digital space.
“So, we need to get this through to the public and make concerted efforts so that we are not left behind.
“The emerging economy is digitally driven and I believe that Nigeria has great opportunities in this field.”

E2%80%99ll-serve-adoke-etete-through-their-lawyers-%E2%80%93efcc We’ll Serve Adoke, Etete Through Their Lawyers –EFCC

Dan Etete

Justice D. Z Senchi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, on Friday ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to serve charges of alleged abuse of office and money laundering in respect of the granting of the Oil Prospecting License, OPL 245, to Shell and ENI, brought against a former Minister of Petroleum, Dan Etete, former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, and others by substituted means.
Justice Senchi lifted the arrest warrant earlier issued against the defendants and ruled that it would be reissued after the prosecution had served them by substituted means due to their unavailability.
The commission had on April 17, 2019, obtained a warrant of arrest against Messrs Etete and Adoke, as well as four others over the OPL 245 scandal.
The EFCC filed criminal charges against the defendants but the commission said it had been difficult for it to serve them the charges or produce them in court because they were all on exile.
The situation forced the EFCC to apply for a warrant of arrest against them, which was granted by the court, empowering the Nigeria Police Force and Interpol to arrest them anywhere they are seen.
The EFCC said it had also been difficult to execute the warrant as the defendants remained in foreign locations, leaving the court to contend with endless adjournments on the matter.
With the development, the defendants through their counsel went to court, asking that the warrant be set aside based on the fact that the EFCC had so far not served them any charges.

Dan Etete

Justice Senchi obliged them, saying the application was meritorious.
The trial judge stated that the EFCC ought to have served the charges to the defendants before applying for their arrest warrant that was granted.
The judge further ruled that the arrest warrant would be reissued against the defendants if they refused to show up in court after they had been served and upon a new application by the EFCC.
Following Justice Senchi’s pronouncements, the prosecuting counsel, Aliyu Yusuf, informed the court that the commission was going to apply to serve the defendants through their legal representatives.
He said, “As we cannot serve them because they are at large, we will write an application for leave of court, permitting us to serve the accused through their lawyers and if after adjournment they did not show up, we will still ask the court for a warrant of arrest.”
The government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo had revoked the OPL 245, which the late General Sani Abacha granted Mr Etete, who was his Petroleum Minister and reassigned it to Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company.
Etete’s Malabu Oil and Gas, however, reclaimed the oil block in 2006 through the court.
While Shell challenged the decision, a settlement and resolution agreement described as fraudulent by the EFCC came under President Goodluck Jonathan’s government with Shell and ENI buying the oil block from Malabu for $1.1bn.
The EFCC said its investigation into the deal revealed crimes that border on conspiracy, forgery of bank documents, bribery, corruption and money laundering to the tune of over $1.2bn.
Those the anti-graft agency consider culpable and have charged are among others, Messrs Etete and Adoke, Malabu Oil and Gas Ltd, Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep, Nigeria Agip Exploration and their officials.
The charges are pending before the FCT High Court and the Federal High Court.

Nigerians Demand National Honour For Adadevoh

SaharaReporters Media

Many Nigerians have joined Enough is Enough Nigeria to demand that Stella Adadevoh, the medical doctor, who lost her life to Ebola disease by preventing its spread in the country, be immortalised with a national honour.
EiE began a petition on Saturday, asking Nigerians to demand from President Muhammadu Buhari to recognise Adadevoh with the highest national honour.
Other Nigerians have taken up this task, asking that the martyr deserves to be honoured for her sacrifice.
In less than 24 hours, over 4000 Nigerians have signed the petition.
EiE justified the call, saying, “The perception of Nigerians around the world is at an all-time low.
“Let’s change the negative narrative of who we are as Nigerians by honouring our heroes and heroines.
“Sign the petition and join your voice to call on President Muhammadu Buhari in accordance with the National Honours Act of 1964, to confer on late Dr Ameyo Stella Adadevoh and her brave medical team the national honours they deserve for their sacrifice for Nigeria.
“On October 27, 2019 (today), #DrAdadevohGCFR would have turned 63. She was the doctor who detected Nigeria’s first Ebola Virus Disease case in Patrick Sawyer, a diplomat who arrived Lagos, Nigeria, for an international conference in July 2014.
“Despite great personal risk, sustained threats, and mounting international pressure, #DrAdadevohGCFR restrained and prevented the diplomat from leaving the hospital and infecting Nigeria’s population of almost 200 million people.
“Because of #DrAdadevohGCFR, Nigeria recorded only eight painful deaths in Africa’s most populous nation. She is a true Heroine that represents the best of who we are as Nigerians.
“President Buhari would, by conferring national honours on #DrAdadevohGCFR and her medical team, be ensuring that their selfless sacrifice for country and mankind is gazetted in Nigeria’s records for posterity; never to be forgotten by future generations to come.”

Osinbajo Hails UNILAG For Contribution To Nigeria’s Development

Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has hailed the University of Lagos for the role it had played over the years in the development of the country.
Osinbajo, who spoke on Saturday during UNILAG Alumni Association Golden Jubilee Awards and Gala Night held in Lagos, said that regardless of instances of wrong acts by some persons associated with the institution, the school was a formidable citadel of learning.
He said, “One of the many reasons why the University of Lagos is able to maintain such an excellent reputation is because of the people who have passed through its walls.
“As alumni, our successes become testaments to the university’s own success and so we celebrate 50 years of networking across generations, 50 years of giving back to the university that gave us so much, and 50 years of making our alma mater proud.”
