RTEAN Crisis: Court fixes hearing Nov 11, Dec 16

The National Industrial Court (NIC), Abuja on Thursday fixed Nov. 11 and Dec. 16 to hear a case on the leadership crisis rocking the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

A former National President of the association, Mr Eriyo Osakpanwan, had obtained an injunction, restraining the acting National President, Mr Mohammed Musa, and six others from parading themselves as members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of RTEAN, pending hearing and determination of a motion before the court.

Don’t pay any money to our staff for services, JAMB advises candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has advised candidates not to pay money to any of its staff for any services.
Rather, JAMB has asked the candidates to direct all payments for its services to the Treasury Single Account, TSA.
“All payments on JAMB services are made directly to the board’s TSA. Please be informed that the board frowns on any form of financial dealings between candidates and workers,” JAMB said in a tweet, Thursday.

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress APC, Yekini Nabena has declared as a nullity, alleged plans by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa state to rig the November 16 governorship elections, saying after 20 years of dealing with the PDP, Bayelsans are now tired and rooting for a change.

Nabena who also supported traditional rulers in Bayelsa state to urge politicians not to stockpile arms ahead of the elections, however, raised suspicions regarding the recent establishment of an army and police base in Toru-Orua, the hometown of Gov.

Nasarawa gov seeks enabling environment to make agriculture attractive to youths

Nasarawa State Gov. Abdullahi Sule says Nigerian leaders have the responsibility to set the pace and create enabling environment for the youth to get involved in agriculture.
The governor said this at the Seminar and Exhibition of the 2019 National Agriculture Show and Exhibition, organised by the National Agricultural Foundation in Tudunwada, Nasarawa, on Thursday.
He said in view of youths’ attraction to other sectors such as entertainment and sports it was important to make agriculture attractive to them adding that the future of agriculture in Nigeria was dependent on the youth.

FG considers excise duty on soft drinks

The Federal Government is considering introducing excise duties on carbonated drinks (like soft drinks), according to the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed.

Ahmed gave the indication in an interview with newsmen on Thursday on the sidelines of the ongoing World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Washington DC, United States.
She said the idea was one of other areas, besides the proposed increase in VAT, that the government was looking at to broaden its revenue base.

Olusanya made this known on Thursday at a news conference on the forthcoming maiden International Coconut Summit in Nigeria at Alausa, Ikeja.
She said theme of the summit slated to hold on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 in Lagos, is: “Unlocking the Industrial and Socioeconomic Potential of Coconut”.

Pipeline inferno guts Onikan Waterworks

The prompt intervention of men of the Lagos State Fire Service saved what could degenerate into an explosion when they out a raging fire that gutted Onikan Water Works, Lagos Island.

 
According to a source the state Fire Service, the fire started from an underground gas pipeline located close to the waterworks and gutted parts of the facility at about 7 pm.
The prompt arrival of the fire service men later curtailed the inferno from spreading beyond control.
