target=_blank>Two Youth Groups Clash In Delta Over Monarch’s Burial

File Photo

Youths from Okere-Urhobo and Itsekiri areas of Delta State have clashed over traditional rites surrounding the burial of an Urhobo monarch, leaving over five persons injured.
The crisis was said to have begun on Saturday and continued on Sunday following an order by the leadership of Okere-Urhobo kingdom for business owners to lock up their shops as a mark of respect for their deceased monarch, Oghenero Okumagba (Idama II).
SaharaReporters gathered that this did not go down well with Itsekiri communities, leading to a brawl.
A source disclosed that the Itsekiri youths vowed not to obey the order since the late monarch was of Urhobo extraction and had nothing to do with them.
He said, “The Itsekiri youths said during the burial ceremony of their late monarch, Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse II, no such order was given and based on that, the Okere-Urhobo’s order will not be observed in Itsekiri domain.”
Commissioner of Police in the state, Adeyinka Adeleke, confirmed the crisis, adding that one person was shot and that the fight was connected to the burial of the king.

Dr. Oby Ezekwesili

Dr. Oby Ezekwesili

A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has condemned the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for building a fence around the Unity Fountain.
The popular and iconic fountain in the heart of Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, has served as a rallying point for many important events and demonstrations over the years without any restriction in access.
Reacting to the development in a post on Twitter, Ezekwesili said the move by the government will end in tears.
She said, “Let me offer free counsel to our @NGRPresident @MBuhari. Ask your contractors to pull down the fence and roll back their construction equipment @Our Unity Fountain now.
“This act of stifling citizens’ voice will end in tears. But it won’t be citizens crying, sir!
“This is childish. Why is the government afraid of civic right to assemble?”

Five people were on Sunday afternoon burnt beyond recognition in a motor accident that occurred along the Kaduna-Kachia Road in Kaduna State, according to a report by PUNCH.
The accident, which happened in a bush about 56 kilometres away from Kaduna, involved two vehicles.
While one of the vehicles is a car with registration number JJJ 220 BB, the second vehicle was burnt beyond recognition.
It was gathered that three of the passengers were inside the burnt car, which was still smouldering at the time of this report.
Another charred body of a passenger was seen beside the burnt car.

E2%80%99s-properties target=_blank>Real Reason Kwara Assembly Seized Saraki’s Properties

The Kwara State House of Assembly has disclosed why it directed the seizure of the Alimi Chalet and a landed property popularly called Ile Arugbo, which was allegedly acquired by former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
It disclosed that it directed the seizure of the property because they belonged to the state government and that there was no evidence that Saraki paid for them.
The Assembly, in a statement by the Special Assistant to the Speaker, Ibrahim Sheriff, said that the allocation of the property to the former Senate President by the last administration was a “violation” of the state’s law.
The statement reads, “The Ile Arugbo had been erected on land originally meant for the expansion of the Civil Service Clinic and phase II of the state government secretariat without any evidence that anyone paid a dime to the government for the land.
“The noise surrounding the affected property is politically motivated, as other public property unlawfully acquired are also being looked into.
“We dare say that allowing impunity to stand, no matter who is affected and how long it had taken place, is a disservice to the state and its people.
“Apart from the fact that the purported sale of the Alimi Chalet did not conform to the Kwara State Pension Law 2010, as amended, which incidentally was the brainchild of Saraki, we contend that there is no record anywhere that Saraki paid a dime to have the property transferred to him.
“Aside from the three houses on over one hectare of land on Alimi Road supposedly given to Saraki under the state pension law, he also got N250m under the same law to build another retirement home for himself.
“The said Alimi Chalet, which was gifted to him, is the property of the people of Kwara State and was never contemplated as a gift to former governors.”

target=_blank>You Can’t Distract Me With Your Insults, Governor Fintiri Tells Senator Abbo

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has reacted to a YouTube video where Senator Elisha Abbo described him (Fintiri) as “a small man in a big office”.
Fintiri, in a statement by his Director General, Media and Communications, Solomon Kumangar, said he was too preoccupied with serving the people of the state to attend to petty issues.
The statement reads, “The attention of the governor of Adamawa State has been drawn to a video circulating on the social media in which Senator Ishaku Abbo attempted to cast aspersion on Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.
“His Excellency views the senator’s action as unfortunate and takes exception to the insults, innuendoes and attacks on his person and office.
“However, for now, the governor does not intend to join issues with the senator.
“Rather, His Excellency is in the delicate phase of laying strong bricks for the security, growth, development and prosperity of the people and institutions of Adamawa State and would not want to be distracted.”
Senator Abbo, who is currently being tried for assaulting a woman inside a s** toy shop in Abuja, had in the said video described Governor Fintiri as “a small man in a big office”.
Findings by SaharaReporters revealed that the embattled senator’s outburst may not be unconnected to the outcome of the nomination process of the Peoples Democratic Party where all his sponsored candidates were screened out.

E2%80%99t-warn-government-beginning-strike-%E2%80%93tuc target=_blank>We Won’t Warn Government Before Beginning Strike –TUC

President of the Trade Union Congress, Quadri Olaleye, has said that the organisation had commenced mobilisation of members ahead of a nationwide protest, adding that they would not embark on a warning strike.
The TUC’s position comes after the failure of the Nigerian Government to implement the new minimum wage of N30,000.
In a statement, the organised labour said that it would not guarantee industrial peace in Nigeria if the government failed to hold a meeting with it and accept its demand on the consequential salary adjustment arising from the new minimum wage.
Labour said it had demonstrated a great deal of restraint, consideration and patience with government in arriving at the demand of 29 per cent salary increase for officers on salary levels 07 to 14 and 24 per cent adjustment for officers on salary grade levels 15 to 17.
The statement said the alleged nonchalant attitude of the government negotiating side had dragged negotiations for consequential wages adjustment unduly, adding that Nigerian workers had exercised tremendous patience and restraint already.
Olaleye said, “We had already begun mobilisation of our members for an industrial action long before we made the pronouncement.
“We have given instructions on mobilisation to our members in the states and all council areas.
“If by October 16 government fails to do what we expect, we will start our action with a rally. On the second day (October 17), the strike will begin.
“We are not going to give any warning strike this time round. We have threatened to go on strike on many occasions.”

target=_blank>Saudi Arabia Gives Unmarried Foreign Couples Go Ahead To Rent Hotel Rooms

Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday that it would allow unmarried foreign couples to rent hotel rooms together.
This comes after the ultraconservative kingdom begins offering tourist visas for the first time, according to the AFP.
The tourism authority said in a statement published on Twitter that Saudi women travelling alone would also be able to check into a hotel by presenting valid identity cards.
In the past, couples wanting to stay in a hotel had to prove they were married.
“This is no longer required for tourists,” the statement said.
Saudi Arabia announced on September 27 that it was opening its doors to holidaymakers with the goal of diversifying its oil-dependent economy.
The kingdom had previously only issued visas to Muslim pilgrims, foreign workers, and recently to spectators at sporting or cultural events.
Citizens from 49 countries are now eligible for online e-visas or visas on arrival, including the United States, Australia and several European nations.

target=_blank>Nigerian Government Pledges Support For Nollywood

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, has said that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari would ensure that Nollywood practitioners get a fair deal from their trade.
Mustapha stated this at the grand finale of a stage play titled “Agbarho The Musical”, produced by 30-year-old Patrick Otoro, on Saturday in Abuja, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
He said the proprietary rights of Nollywood actors needed to be protected by the government so that they can derive maximum return from their artistic endeavours.
Mustapha said, “One of the things that government has to do is to make sure that their rights are protected because that is why they lose a lot of money.
“There are a lot of leakages in the process in terms of people pirating their products.
“Nollywood in the African continent and even in the world is thriving and big industry. But the actors and actresses, do they receive commensurate benefit from the kind of work they do?
“They are not getting value for their output. They train very hard, they perform very well but at the end of the day, what gets to them is peanuts.
“The industry will have to restructure itself in such a way that there will be capable and competent managers that will manage their artists.
“All of these must be put in place so that whenever talent is exhibited, it will be protected.”

Court To Hear Suit On Buhari’s RefusalTo Hand Over Power To Osinbajo During Foreign Visit On Monday

The Federal High Court in Lagos will on Monday hear a suit filed by a Lagos-based lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, challenging why President Muhammadu Buhari failed to hand over power to Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, when he travelled to the United Kingdom from April 25, 2019 to May 5, 2019.
Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), is joined in the suit.
Effiong, in the suit with number FHC/L/CS/763/2019, is asking the court to determine “whether in view of the extant provisions of Section 145 (1) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the President can validly proceed on vacation for any length of time without transmitting a written declaration to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to that effect, which will empower the Vice President to perform the functions of the President in an acting capacity.”
The lawyer also asked the court to determine whether the constitution or any other law permits the President to exercise presidential authority over the affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from any country outside the territorial jurisdiction of Nigeria except when the President was out of the country on official diplomatic engagements.
In his defense to the suit, Buhari and Malami stated that the time within which the President had to transmit a written declaration to the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives is 21 days.
President Buhari also stated that his “private foreign trip” lasted for only nine days and did not exceed 21 days.
Buhari denied the claim of Effiong that his nine-day “private visit” to London was a vacation.
In their argument, lawyers to President Buhari argued that, “There is nowhere in the exhibits tendered by the plaintiff where it was stated that the President went on vacation.
“To hold that the said foreign trip amounted to vacation in the meaning and contemplation under section 145 (1) of the constitution will no doubt amount to speculation.”
Buhari equally asked the court in a preliminary objection to strike out the suit because the plaintiff lacks the locus standi to institute the case.
However, in a reply on points of law filed on Friday at the court in Ikoyi, Effiong said that, “If the arguments canvassed by the defendants is accepted by the court, the consequence will be that the mischief and lacuna which the National Assembly addressed and cured in 2010 following the death of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has been reinvented though the backdoor on account of the act of executive impunity and utter disregard for the constitution by the first defendant.”
The matter comes up at the court on Monday before Justice A. O Faji.
