target=_blank>Days After Thunderstorm Killed 36 Cows In Ondo Community, Residents Raise The Alarm Over Looming Epidemic From Stench

Following the death of 36 cows at Ijare in Ifedore Local Council Area of Ondo State by thunderstorm on Saturday, an offensive odour has swept across the community.
The odour, if not quickly checked, might result into an epidemic, according to residents of the area, who raised the alarm on Wednesday.
Our correspondent, who visited the community on Wednesday, observed that many of the town’s residents living close to the site of the incident, had abandoned their homes.
Mr John Ajayi, a resident of the community, told SaharaReporters that the smell oozing from the site of the tragedy was dangerous to human health, noting that the government has to urgently intervene.
“We no longer allow people to get closer to the mountain where cows died. Everywhere is now smelling and we need to be careful.
“We are appealing to the state government to urgently visit the community and help us out to prevent possible outbreak of epidemic in the community.

Ms Funmilola Lawrence, a petty trader in the community, said that the incident had already given the people of Ijare a bad name.
She said, “It is sad that an incident like this could occured but it has given us a bad name that we people in Ijare a bad set of people but we are not.
“So, we are advising strangers to ask questions whenever they come into our community to avoid what could be described as a taboo on the land.”
It was reliably gathered that the community’s traditional ruler was set to perform some rituals in order to appease the gods.
They have already met with the Fulani herdsmen through the head of the Mayetti Allah.
Traditional ruler of the town said that it was against the traditions of the community for people to turn the Oke-Owa Hill into a grazing land.
He said, “Oke-owa is a sacred place and our people know that you can’t just go there the way you like.
“As traditional ruler of the town, l go there once in a year and l don’t even go there alone.
“For me, it is an act of God for the thunderstorm to strike and kill those cows because the land is forbidden.”

target=_blank>Democracy Only Acceptable Form Of Governance, Says President Buhari After Failed Coup In Ghana

Following the announcement of the interception of an attempted coup in Ghana, President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the attack, saying democracy is the only accepted form of governance in Africa.
Buhari, who spoke through Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, said corrupt vested interests always seek to fight against working governments.
Emphasising his support for democracy, Buhari said the days of coups and change of government without votes are over.
He said, “Nigeria and Ghana are leading partners in ECOWAS, and Transparency International, and Afrobarometer’s Africa Index 2019 attested that both countries have recorded exceptional advances in fighting corruption.
“When you take on powerful and corrupt vested interests successfully, sometimes they seek to push back.
“As the saying goes, ‘if you fight corruption, corruption will fight back’.
“The only acceptable form of governance in our region in this 21st century is through democratic elections.
“It is the only way to install – and the only way to change – an administration.
“The days of coups and governments without votes are over.
“All Africans hold the nation of Ghana in the highest esteem as the first post-colonial country to gain independence and the first African country to hold multi-party elections by universal suffrage.
“Ghana is the first true African democracy.”

target=_blank>JUST IN: Court To Hear Bail Application Of Journalist, Agba Jalingo, On Thursday

The Federal High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has ordered the remand of Agba Jalingo, Publisher of CrossRiver Watch,in prison as it is set to hear his bail application on Thursday.
Jalingo is facing charges of terrorism, treasonable felony and attempt to topple the Cross River State Government.
Jalingo was arrested after publishing a report exposing how Governor Ben Ayade approved and diverted N500m meant for Cross River Microfinance Bank.
The charges received widespread condemnation after they were leaked to the public.
Justice Simon Amobeda, who presided over the case, said, “The counter affidavit by the prosecution filed in response to the motion for bail by the defendant’s counsel was added to the file on Wednesday morning and has not had time to look at it.”
He also said that he perused the file on Tuesday night and did not see the counter affidavit.
The prosecution counsel, Mr Denis Terhemba, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, claimed the counter affidavit was filed on September 18, 2019 but Jalingo’s counsel, Mr Attah Ochinke, said he was served shortly before the court began sitting.
However, after a brief discussion with the clerk of the court, who whispered a few words to him, Justice Amobeda ruled that Jalingo be remanded at the Afokang Prison Center in Calabar.
He, however, adjourned the case until Thursday, September 26, 2019, for hearing of the bail application.

target=_blank>Kogi Governorship Poll: Governor Yahaya Bello Accused Of Bribing Opposition Candidates With Millions Of Naira

As the race for Kogi State governorship election heats up, SaharaReporters has exclusively obtained an audio conversation of how Governor Yahaya Bello of the ruling All Progressives Congress offered and gave N5 million each to gubernatorial candidates and running mates of opposition political parties in the state.
Bello, it was gathered, gave the money to the candidates in a bid to get them to withdraw from the contest and endorse him.
Investigation further revealed that the governor was working with the Chairman of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Chief Peter Ameh, who was assigned to share the money for candidates who were disqualified on the basis of age limit.
The candidates disqualified were compelled not to contest their disqualification by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
INEC had disqualified some parties who nominated candidates for deputy governor below 35 years.
Some candidates who rejected the bribe insisted that a precedent had been set by the electoral body in Zamfara State where the deputy governor was 33 years old.

Governor Yahaya Bello Accused Of Bribing Opposition Candidates With Millions Of Naira

SaharaReporters had reported how former outspoken lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti, of the Social Democratic Party was disqualified by INEC on Monday, which was the deadline for the substitution of candidates.
The situation made Akpoti vowed not to leave the office of the INEC chairman until the commission accept the name of her running mate.
According to sources, all the political parties in the state who fielded candidates for the November 16, 2019, election collected the bribe from the governor except two candidates, Akpoti and APM Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle.
“The IPAC Chairman is obviously working for Yahaya Bello. He is warehousing some cash and those who collected money that they are not going to fight it but step down.
“The essence of paying them is for them to step down for Yahaya Bello. They (APM) joined Natasha who will not step down and who will not even buy into this N5million deal,” the source said.
It was also gathered that the IPAC chairman, furious by the decision of Akpoti and the APM, called the APM chairman, and threatened him to either accept the bribe or “lose out on both ends”.
“I know they cannot approach Natasha and that is why Natasha is crazy now because the whole thing is financed by Yahaya Bello. The IPAC has made itself a warehouse that is sharing the money for the parties,” the source noted.
Aggrieved members of SDP and APM had staged a protest to the INEC headquarters demanding the reversal of the disqualification of their candidates.

$9.6bn Judgment: P&ID Case, A Scam, Buhari Tells UN

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria would not tolerate attempts by persons and organisations he describes as international criminals to defraud the country.
He also stressed that his administration would sustain its anti-corruption fight.
Buhari cited the Nigerian Government’s prosecution of Process and Industrial Development over the controversial $9.6bn judgment it obtained from a London, United Kingdom, court against Nigeria as an example of “a scam”.
He was speaking at the General Debate of the ongoing 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
Buhari told the session that the world was facing various crises, including financial crimes and called for collective efforts by all countries to address the problems, according to a report by PUNCH.
He said, “Organised criminal networks often acting with impunity across international borders present new challenges where only collective actions can deliver genuine results.
“This is true in the battle against violent extremism, against trafficking in people and drugs and against corruption and money laundering.
“The present Nigerian Government is facing the challenges of corruption head-on.
“We are giving notice to international criminal groups by the vigorous prosecution of the P&ID scam attempting to cheat Nigeria of billions of dollars.”
