E2%80%99t-be-harassed-regime-negotiates-bandits-terrorists-says target=_blank>Law-abiding Citizens Shouldn’t Be Harassed By Regime That Negotiates With Bandits, Terrorists, Says Falana

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari administration of human rights violation, stating that a government that negotiates with bandits and terrorists shouldn’t harass law-abiding citizens.
Falana was reacting to the invasion of the secretariat of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights and also the Civic Media Lab.
He said, “This morning, the Nigeria Police Force invaded the secretariat of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights and sealed off the place in Lagos.
“In spite of the fundamental rights of the Nigerian people to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression, the police had wanted to disrupt and stop the peaceful meeting of law-abiding citizens to discuss the illegal detention of Omoyele Sowore, Agba Jalingo, Abayomi Olawale and scores of others being incarcerated in various detention facilities in the country.
“Contrary to the order of the Federal High Court that Sowore should be detained for 45 days, the Department of State Services has incarcerated him for 47 days.
“Last week, the Federal High Court turned down the application for the renewal of its order for the detention of Agba Jalingo and Ekanem Ekpo for 14 days.
“In spite of the expiration of the detention order of the two journalists, they are being held by the police in Cross River State.
“Mr Abayomi Olawale, who was arrested on August 5, 2019, has been detained for 45 days by the DSS without any court order whatsoever.
“These detainees and scores of others languishing in illegal custody ought to be released forthwith.
“While congratulating the organisers of the symposium for successfully holding the programme at another venue, the harassment of law-abiding citizens cannot be tolerated under a regime  that is busy negotiating with bandits and terrorists, bribing them with public funds and granting them amnesty.”

target=_blank>HURIWA Calls Release Of Sowore, Other Political Detainees

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has called for the immediate release of pro-democracy activist and Convener of RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, and other journalists and activists currently held by the Nigerian Government.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, HURIWA accused President Muhammadu Buhari of using security agencies to stifle dissents.
The group said, “Nigeria has never been this bad with a general collapse of law enforcement by the police and an unprecedented rise in arbitrary arrests and detention.
“Security agencies are becoming willing tools in the hands of the Abuja tyrant who has since unleashed a regime of brutal clampdown on activists and journalists brandishing choreographed charges that lack justification.”
HURIWA also accused the United Nations, under the leadership of Antonio Guterres, of aiding and abetting the rise of tyranny in Nigeria by conferring global status on the Nigerian Government.
It added, “It is either that the United Nations is tolerant of dictatorship or the hierarchy of the United Nations is dangerously incompetent and uninformed about the stark realities of excruciating pains systematically inflicted by the current government on a massive scale targeting millions of Nigerians.”
Sowore was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services in Lagos on August 3 for calling on Nigerians to take to the streets in peaceful protests to demand a better country.
Despite calls for his release, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has continued to hold on to him.

Stakeholders To Monitor Implementation Of Social Investment Programme

Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria have proposed to strictly monitor the implementation of the poverty alleviation scheme of the Federal Government under the National Social Investment Programme.
The decision was reached at a conference organised by Human and Environmental Development Agenda to increase participation of CSOs in transparency of the scheme.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the conference, the participants commended the government for the N-SIP initiative, stating that the programme was making tremendous impact in the quest to reduce poverty in the North-Eastern states and across the country.
However, community leaders and school officials in some parts of the country were fingered in observed shortcomings, which bother on corruption and lack of transparency in the implementation and supervision of the programmes.
“In order to deal with the problems of corruption identified in the implementation of the National Social Investment Programme, the government should strengthen the school monitoring committee and design additional monitoring mechanisms to increase the level of transparency and accountability, while anti-corruption agencies should be actively involved in the implementation process for maximum output,” the communiqué reads.
