The Nigeria Police Force is making secret moves to get a court order to detain Agba Jalingo, Publisher of Cross River Watch for 90 days.
Jalingo was arrested in Lagos on August 22, 2019, by police personnel following his publication of an article asking Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River to come clean on the whereabouts of the N500m that was released for the state’s microfinance bank.
The hearing of the suit against Jalingo was to continue on Monday, September 9, 2019 after Justice Isoni Francisca adjourned it on Thursday, September 5, 2019.
However, sources revealed that the police are hurriedly making moves to discreetly secure an order from the court in a separate case to detain Jalingo for another 90 days.
“They (police) have approached the court to get a frivolous order to detain him (Jalingo) for 90 days.

target=_blank>Return Money Used To Pay Government Lawyer, CSNAC Tells Buhari

The Civil Society Network Against Corruption, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari committed a ‘grave act of corruption’ by securing the services of a government lawyer to defend him in a private court case.
In a letter addressed to the President and signed by CSNAC Chairman, Mr Olanrewaju Suraju, the group asked Buhari to return the money incurred in the process to the public purse.
CSNAC said, “Your action runs contrary to the mandate of your government to fight corruption.
“We make bold to state that this act runs foul of the provisions of the Code of Conduct for public office holders.
“In the light of the above, we hereby demand that the cost in which Buhari would have incurred in seeking the services of private legal practitioners to be remitted into the treasury of the government with immediate effect.”
The Supreme Court had on Monday, September 1, criticised President Buhari for using a senior state counsel at the Ministry of Justice, Abdullahi Abubakar, for his private election-related trial.
The court made the observation while delivering a ruling in a suit accusing President Buhari of lying on oath.
Three appellants had filed the suit alleging that Buhari lied on oath in a form submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2019 election.

He was arrested in Lagos on August 22, 2019, and subsequently charged for treasonable felony, terrorism, cultism, and disturbance of public peace.
The GoFundMe account, which was set up by one Iso Bassey, is to show support for Jalingo and his demand for accountability.
Bassey said, “It is difficult to disconnect Agba’s arrest and continued detention from the articles he had written in recent times demanding better financial accountability from the government of Cross River State.
“Agba’s articles seem to have touched a raw nerve of the governor.
“I have launched this campaign in an effort to raise funds to support Agba Jalingo.”
Bassey is urging all lovers of transparency, accountability and a free press to support this cause by donating as much as £2,500 to support Jalingo.

target=_blank>Stop Justifying Xenophobic Attacks, Falana Tells South African Government

Femi Falana (SAN)

Femi Falana (SAN)

Rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has advised the South African Government to stop justifying xenophobic attacks in the country.
This is coming in the wake of recent outbursts against the killing of foreign nationals by South Africans.
Falana said, “While pretending to condemn the attacks, the Cyril Ramaphosa regime has said that many Nigerians liviing in South Africa are drug addicts.
“This is an unfortunate statement as the authorities in Pretoria ought to have arrested, prosecuted and jailed the Nigerians allegedly involved in drug trafficking in South Africa.
“Are we to believe that the immigrants from other African countries have been attacked because of their involvement in the drug business?
“Political leaders of both Nigeria and South Africa should address the crises of poverty, inequality, unemployment, corruption and violence caused by the religious implementation of neo-liberal policies imposed by the International Monetary Fund on the two largest economies in Africa.”
