What would have been another tragedy in the Nigerian aviation sector was averted on Saturday as a Max Air aircraft with 550 passenger crash-landed at the Minna International Airport in Niger State.
The aircraft, a Boeing 747-300 with registration number 5N-DBK, was said to have developed a fault mid-air before the pilot struggled to land it at the airport.
The incident led to the collapse of one of the four engines of the aircraft.
It was further gathered that the aircraft was returning pilgrims from Niger State from Saudi Arabia.
On landing, a source close to the airport confided in our correspondent that the aircraft skidded off the runway.
The reason for the incident could not be ascertained at the moment, but it was gathered that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had been informed of the incident.
However, a source close to the scene told our correspondent that no life was lost, while efforts to get the officials of Max Air to comment on the issue was unsuccessful.

Williams Oyibogare, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has allegedly committed suicide.
According to a report by PUNCH, two empty bottles of Sniper insecticide was found in Oyibogare’s home, hence the suspicion that the operative must have taken his own life.
The Edo State Police Command said that an investigation is ongoing to unravel the cause of his death, stating that autopsy would reveal the fact.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Chidi Nwabuzor, said, “Investigations are ongoing and it would be too soon to make any conclusions at this stage; it is too early to make any pronouncements.
“Of course, there will be an autopsy to know the cause of the death and inquire about what happened.”
A colleague of the deceased said Oyibogare recently returned from his annual leave looking emaciated.
He said, “Oyibogare returned from leave recently looking pale.
“He may have died from an illness or it could also have been suicide but we cannot say for sure since we don’t live with him.”

target=_blank>Nigerian Government Debunks Abuja Explosion Report

The Nigerian Government has debunked claims that a bomb explosion occurred at the South African High Commission in Abuja on Saturday.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the video of the purported bomb explosion being circulated on the social media, was from an incident that occurred in Abuja on June 25, 2014.
He said, “A pattern is emerging of the antics of the desperate opposition to latch on to the use of fake news and disinformation as a strategy to trigger chaos in the country.
“On Friday, they doctored and circulated the video of my appearance on Channels Television in January 2015 (when I was the spokesman for the All Progressives Congress) to make it look like I was begging Nigerians to forgive President Buhari for not having a school certificate.
“Worse still, they posted the video afresh, giving the impression it happened last Thursday and that I acted in my capacity as Minister of Information and Culture.
“Unfortunately for them, this doctored video came out on the same day a report emerged that the Peoples Democratic Party had sent lawyers and party agents to the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom to confirm the authenticity of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s West African School Certificate, only to be stunned to discover that the President did not only write the examination, he also passed.
“This is just the beginning. Nigerians should expect an explosion of fake news and disinformation in the days and weeks ahead.”

He said IPOB would continue to hold Nigerian politicians accountable.
Kanu, who has been on exile after jumping bail in Nigeria, made this statement in an interview with BEN TV in London, United Kingdom.
He said, “Very soon, any governor who has not paid salaries will not come abroad anymore.
“If you are owing salaries, you’re not allowed to go abroad anymore.
“You bank teachers’ salaries, you bank the salaries of pensioners, you cannot come abroad anymore.
“This is just the beginning. We’ll not attack them; we’ll just ask them questions. It is called picketing. It’s allowed within the ambit of democratic rules.
“If we see you, we’ll ask you what you’ve been doing with teachers’ salaries, nurses’ salaries and why you’ve not been paying them.
“It doesn’t matter the state you come from, once we catch you, you must explain why you’ve not paid salaries for months.”
