Some yet to be identified personnel of the Nigerian Army have been accused by the police of killing three of its officials and releasing a kidnap kingpin in the process.
The incident was said to have taken place along Ibi-Jalingo Road, Taraba State, on Wednesday.
The incident also resulted in injuries for other police officers and civilians as well.
According to a statement by spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Frank Mba, the affected officers  led by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Felix Adolije, of the Intelligence Response Team, reportedly came under attack in the process of moving kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu, to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba.
Mba disclosed that one inspector, two sergeants and a civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained during the attack by the soldiers.
According to him, the military personnel shot at the policemen despite enough evidence that they were on genuine mission.
Mba said that in the ensuing chaos following the shooting, Hamisu, who had been on the police’s wanted list, escaped.
He said, “The police operatives, led by ASP Felix Adolije of the IRT, reportedly came under sudden shooting by personnel of the Nigerian Army along Ibi-Jalingo Road, Taraba State.
“The operatives who were taking the arrested suspect Hamisu to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, were shot at several times by the soldiers despite sufficient proof that they were police personnel on legitimate duty.
“Three policemen comprising one inspector and two sergeants and one civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries, while others sustained serious gunshot wounds.
“The soldiers thereafter released the handcuffed suspect who is now on the run.”
Speaking further, Mba said that the police had begun investigation into the incident.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria has demanded the immediate release of 12 corpses of its members killed  on July 22 during a clash with security operatives in Abuja.
IMN condemned the police for holding on to the bodies when they ought to have been buried according to Islamic rights.
The group made the demand in a statement by one of its members, Abdullahi Musa, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Wednesday.
Musa said, “We wish to inform the public about the continuous incarceration of the victims of Monday, 22nd July 2019 police brutality.
“The victims had been severely injured before being whisked away, and they are still languishing in police custody.
“Again, police authorities are yet to release 12 corpses to their bereaved families for funeral.
“Nine of them were killed at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, three died in their detention.
“The families of those killed have made several attempts to collect the corpses but the police rejected their request.
“Now, over two weeks after the incident, the corpses are still with the police.
“Likewise, police authorities continue to detain 63 protesters without taking them to court.
“Out of the 63, 11 people sustained various degrees of serious injuries that required urgent medical attention.”
The group further alleged that some members who attempted to get medical treatment at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital where whisked away to an unknown location.

target=_blank>Don’t Grant El-Zakzaky Asylum, Kaduna Govt Tells India

The Kaduna State Government has called on Indian authorities not to grant asylum status to leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenah.
In a statement signed by Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, the state government said granting the popular cleric asylum would prevent him from facing justice for offences he had been accused of.
A high court in Kaduna had on Monday granted permission to El-Zakzaky and his wife to travel to India for medical treatment after being held in detention since 2015 by government forces.
According to Aruwan, El-Zakzaky must return to face trial for his actions and therefore India or other countries must not accommodate him.
The cleric and his followers are being accused by the government of disturbing public peace and posing a threat to national security.
Aruwan, according to a report by The Cable, said, “Malam Ibrahim El-Zakzaky is facing criminal trial before the Kaduna High Court on charges filed in April 2018.
“The Kaduna State Government is prosecuting Malam him on an eight-count charge, including culpable homicide punishable with death.
“The Kaduna State Government respects the right of anyone to seek treatment anywhere in the world.
“But in the case of persons facing trial for serious offenses, necessary safeguards are required to ensure that such persons do not become fugitives from justice or frustrate trial by claiming asylum or the status of political prisoner in the host country.”

target=_blank>Kidnapping: Police To Deploy Special Squad To S’West

The police authorities have said plans are underway to deploy a special squad to curb kidnappings, banditry and other forms of crime in the South-West region of the country.
Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Muhammed, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Akure, capital of Ondo State, during a visit to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Wednesday.
In recent weeks, the South-West region has become a major hub for bandits robbing and abducting motorists for ransom.
Muhammed, who was represented by  Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Abdulmajid Ali, said officers are currently undergoing training at a camp in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, and will soon be dispatched to all states in the South-West.
He said, “I decided to start with Ondo state before I travel to Ekiti and Osun states because Ondo is one of the focus areas in recent times.
“Security is one of the first pillars of any government in serving the people.
“If security is not provided, there won’t be peace in that area and the governor too would find it difficult to operate.
“In the next two weeks, a special squad will be deployed to Ondo and other South-West states to tackle kidnappings and other security issues.”
Governor Akeredolu while speaking during the meeting, said that his administration was worried about the security challenges in Ondo.
Akeredolu, who was represented by his deputy, Agboola Ajayi, emphasised the need for the police to double up in their efforts at combating crime.
He said, “The police must engage the community and this is important.
“Even if you have 200,000 policemen in a community, you need the corporation of the people in that community for you to be able to carry out your job effectively.”

target=_blank>#RevolutionNow: NLC Lambasts Police, Others For Attack On Protesters

The Nigeria Labour Congress has condemned the police and other security agencies in the country for the attack and arrests of protesters during Monday’s RevolutionNow march in various parts of the nation.
Founder of the movement aimed at protesting against bad governance in the country, Omoyele Sowore, was in the early hours of Saturday arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services in a Lagos hotel.
But undeterred by the arrest of their leader, members of the movement and other Nigerians poured out to the streets on Monday to voice their displeasure with the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
In a statement on Wednesday by its General Secretary, Peter Ozo-Eson, the NLC said that there was nowhere in the Nigerian constitution where security agencies were empowered to attack protesters.
The statement read, “It is with deep consternation that we view the attacks and arrests of peaceful protesters in some parts of the country by security agencies and military personnel on Monday during a protest by some Nigerians in Lagos, Osogbo, Ibadan, Abuja and other cities.
“There is nowhere in our constitution or laws that the security agencies are empowered to so brazenly attack peaceful protests and hound its organisers into detention as the right to peaceful protests, assembly and association is fully guaranteed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under sections 39 and 40.
“We view the violent attack on the peaceful protesters by security forces as a total violation of the fundamental rights of not just the protesters but all Nigerian citizens as guaranteed by the constitution as well as various reported judgements of our courts.
“Besides, peaceful protests against bad governance or perceived anti-people government policies is one of the critical fundamental rights that expands the entrenchment and growth of democracy and our security agencies must not be allowed to continue to portray themselves as anti-democracy forces as the Monday attacks so clearly demonstrated.
“It is much more worrisome that soldiers were deployed to attack protesters especially in Lagos.
“To us, soldiers have no role whatsoever in the management of civil protest and they must be called to order by the Federal Government.
“We also view the midnight arrest of one of the organisers of the protest, Mr Omoyele Sowore, as an affront on his fundamental rights as well as our collective rights to freedom of expression and association as enshrined in all the international and national instruments that strengthen democracy.
“His continued detention by the State Security Service lacks any justification as his actions were not in any way a threat to the sovereignty of Nigeria nor the democratically constituted government of Nigeria.
“We therefore demand his immediate release unconditionally, including all others arrested during the protest.”

target=_blank>#RevolutionNow: Buhari’s Regime Won’t Be Stupid To Charge Sowore With Treason, Says Falana

Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer, says President Muhammadu Buhari and his government will be stupid to charge Omoyele Sowore with a treasonable felony.
Sowore, an activist and opponent of Buhari in the last presidential election, has been in the detention of Department of State Services (DSS) since Saturday.
In a video of an event published by PlusTV Africa, the human rights lawyer said Sowore had not run foul of any law for calling for a revolution.
Falana stated: “Meanwhile, the man who is accused of causing a revolution is in detention and many Nigerians have asked me: ‘But Femi, that young man went too far. How can you be calling for a revolution?’ and I said, “where is the offence? Under what section? Treason? Under what section of the criminal code?
“I do hope that the government will not charge him. The government will not be stupid enough to charge Sowore.
“He has briefed me. In fairness to the SSS, when he told them, I won’t make any statement unless I have spoken to my lawyer and they said ‘who is your lawyer?’ he said ‘Femi Falana’. In fairness to them, they asked him to phone me. They gave him a phone.
“I knew they were monitoring the phone and I told him, I hope they won’t charge you but if they do some of the people in government will be our witnesses. one of them, I won’t mention his name, in 2011, asked Nigerians to learn from the Egyptian revolution and be ready for a revolution in Nigeria. So, he will be my first witness.
Falana narrated how he and Gani Fawehimi, the late human rights lawyer and activist, were charged with a treasonable felony by the Ibrahim Babangida regime and how they floored the charge.
He added that those in the government who are harassing citizens with treason will one day be charged with the same offence.
“Those who are in power now, harassing Nigerians with treason – because there is no statute of limitation– some of them will be tried one day for treason,” he said.

Woman Seeks Divorce Over Rape By Husband

A woman named Charity John has sought the dissolution of her marriage to husband Abel over continuous rape by him.
She told a Customary Court sitting in Jikwoyi, Abuja, on Wednesday, that she can no longer endure being raped by her husband.
John also accused her husband of adultery.
In a divorce petition, the woman said, “My husband is fond of raping me. I have endured this for a long time.”
However, denying the allegation including engaging in adultery, Abel accused his wife of cheating on him with a man based in China.
He said, “Everything she said is not true. I can’t rape my wife. I am not a womaniser. Instead, it is my wife that has been cheating on me.
“In May 2017 while she was in the bathroom, I saw a text message on her phone. She has been discussing with a man based in China.
“They have agreed to marry. She told the man that she is not married, that the man she is living with is her brother.
“When I confronted her, she collected the phone from me and smashed it on the floor. I am tired of the marriage.”
Abel consented to the dissolution of the marriage and also said he will accept custody of the two children the union produced.
Presiding Judge, Jemilu Jega, adjourned the case until August 26 for judgment.
