target=_blank>Murder, Kidnapping: Army Court-martials 14 Officers, Soldiers

The Nigerian Army said on Saturday it has begun proceedings to court-martial 14 officers and soldiers accused of murder, kidnapping and desertion, among other criminal offences.
Inaugurating the court proceedings in Port Harcourt, General Officer Commanding Army 6 Division, Port Harcourt, Maj.-Gen. Jamil Sarham, said the suspects were officers and soldiers of the division.
Sarham said the General Court Martial was convened in compliance to Section 131 of the Armed Forces Act guiding the professional conduct of the nation’s military.
“The offences for which the accused persons are being tried range from murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, (and) desertion.
“Others are offences in relation to public and service property, disobedience to standing orders and conducts to the prejudice to service discipline.
“All the offences are punishable under the Armed Forces Act CAP A20 Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004,” he said.
The GOC said the army has zero tolerance for indiscipline, adding that it would never shield any personnel, no matter how highly placed from the law.
He said the armed forces hold personnel in high esteem, and as such, would not put personnel on trial unless the matter was thoroughly investigated.
According to him, the trial was not only aimed at prosecuting the suspects but to discourage others from indulging in criminality.
“To this end, each accused person was thoroughly investigated to ensure that an innocent person is not wrongly tried and punished.
“The headquarters 6 division has painstakingly selected credible officers with in-depth knowledge and outstanding experience of military law and duties as members of the court-martial to ensure fair hearing and justice.”
The accused personnel include three officers and 11 soldiers, including a major, two captains, two staff sergeants and one sergeant, among other ranks.

target=_blank>Names Of Ministers: Buhari To Submit List To Senate Before July 2

Top-ranking lawmakers in Nigeria’s National Assembly said they were expecting President Muhammadu Buhari to submit a list of ministers that will form his federal executive council before or by July 2.
The Ahmad Lawan-led 9th Senate would upon resumption from its two weeks recess in July begin a speedy screening and confirmation of persons whose names are expected to have been submitted by the Presidency before the July 2 resumption of the upper legislative chamber.
A ranking senator told The Guardian, however, that at the moment, nothing is on the ground regarding the list of persons to be confirmed as ministers but was optimistic that within the two weeks of the Senate recess, the President would have submitted the list.
Another lawmaker who just got elevated from the House of Representatives to the Senate in the February 23, 2019 election said that although the President is still within a reasonable time if he submits the list before July, expectations are that President Muhammadu Buhari would make up for the time lost during his first term when he delayed the ministerial list for six months.
The lawmaker further noted that it is particularly very strategic and helpful for the President to meet the July timeline because the Senate might proceed on its annual end of session holiday at the end of that month to reconvene in September.
He was however optimistic that within the two weeks of the Senate recess, the President would have submitted the list.
The lawmaker further noted that it is particularly very strategic and helpful for the President to meet the July timeline because the Senate might proceed on its annual end of session holiday at the end of that month to reconvene in September.
“I believe that the President should take advantage of the three weeks the Senate would spend in session between July 2 and the end of that month by ensuring that before we come back from this two weeks recess, the ministerial list is ready so that we simply screen and confirm them within the three weeks that we are going to sit before we go on end of session recess,” the lawmaker said.
“Anything short of that would amount to dragging Nigeria back to the delay experienced four years ago because the Senate won’t resume until around the third week of September.”

target=_blank>Shame Of June 12 Democracy Day: Grass Takes Over $360m MKO Abiola Stadium

Poor Condition Of $360m Stadium Named After MKO Abiola
Vandalised seats at the swimming pool complex

tv360nigeria

The National Stadium, Abuja, now renamed Moshood Abiola National Stadium is in a state of disrepair following the failure of the government to maintain the facility, which has been taken over by weeds.
Findings indicate that many facilities at the complex, built at a whopping $360m in 2003, had deteriorated while the environment looked unkempt and rough with grasses growing all over the walkways and the parking lot, PUNCH report says.
The sports complex was renamed Moshood Abiola in commemoration of the sacrifices of the winner of June 12, 1993 election by President Muhammadu Buhari during the Democracy Day celebration in Abuja on Wednesday.
The 60,491-capacity stadium, which was constructed to host the 8th All Africa Games in October 2003, consists a covered main bowl; presidential suite and viewing area, 56 corporate suites, post office, banks, media facilities, two scoreboards, and floodlights as well as shops and kiosks.
Other features include a helipad, 3000-capacity indoor sports hall, 2000-capacity gymnasium, 2000-capacity swimming arena, tennis courts, 3000-capacity hockey stadium, and baseball and softball complex.
The MANS is also equipped with emergency service units and closed-circuit security cameras, many of which are no longer functional.
Checks also revealed that about three out of the eight fire-fighting vehicles at the complex had broken down for many years.
One of our correspondents, who visited the Package A and B of the facility on Thursday, observed that the patchy football pitch had been abandoned and looked desolate.
While the tennis and handball courts appeared to be in fairly good conditions, the swimming pool showed signs of decay due to lack of maintenance.

Many of the seats at the spectators’ section have been badly damaged, while the bad ones were simply dumped on the top deck in a messy lump.
The facility, which had been turned to a grazing ground by herdsmen had cattle droppings all over the surroundings of the indoor section of the stadium.
The Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, which is in charge of the facility, had earlier complained that its budget was not sufficient to maintain the stadium.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Olusade Adesola, stated that the ministry’s 2018 budget, which he put at N116bn, “was not sufficient to paint the stadium,” noting that the government was planning to concession the facility.
“The concession is on the table; in fact, we are working on a concession plan. I don’t know how long before it will materialize, but it’s a process and it’s on,” he stated.

Meanwhile, sports fans and analysts have reacted to the naming of the Abuja stadium after Abiola.
While some argued in favour of the renaming, others said the sporting facilities shouldn’t be named after politicians.
Among the reasons given by the fans for rejecting the renaming of the stadium was that a stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State had earlier been named after Abiola, while the Abuja stadium was in a bad shape.
Ezeugo Akpan noted that “not everyone loves Abiola. We are united by sports. The FG should not divide us.”
“No sporting complex deserves to be named after a politician,” Kelechi Nkoro added.
Others also wondered why Buhari renamed the stadium after Abiola despite its current dilapidated state.
Temitope Trotsky said, “In the last four years, what has Buhari done to revamp the stadium? Or is there no sports ministry in Buhari’s cabinet?”
Segun Psalm asked the Federal Government to renovate the stadium, saying that “It’s not about renaming the Abuja stadium to Abiola stadium, but renovating it to a standard stadium worthy of the name.”
Richmond described the naming as a “national disgrace.”
While some said it was not wrong for two stadiums to be named after a person, a majority rejected renaming another stadium after Abiola.
Delta Kahr, said, “What about the other MKO stadium? Maybe it should also be renamed to avoid confusion.”
“We already have MKO Abiola Stadium in Ogun State. Didn’t they check before this avoidable blunder again?” Ekenedilichukwu asked.
Charles Ntima said, “I am not angry by the way. I just wanted to know if it was possible for two stadiums capable of staging international games to bear the same name. That would be the first time I would have heard or seen such.”

E2%80%99s-re-election-says-presidential-poll-not-transparent target=_blank>EU Casts Aspersion On Buhari’s Re-election, Says Presidential Poll Not Transparent

The European Union Observers have said the 2019 presidential election that returned President Muhammadu Buhari to power was not transparent.
The EU pointed out that the February 23 and March 2, 2019, general elections were not transparent and were marred by violence, harassment, and intimidation.
These elements, the observers said, seriously damaged the integrity of the elections conducted under the watch of Buhari’s All Progressives Congress.
“The elections became increasingly marred by violence and intimidation, with the role of the security agencies becoming more contentious as the process progressed,” the EU observers said on Saturday in Abuja, in their final report on the elections.
Not only that were the elections not transparent, the EU observers added: “This damaged the integrity of the electoral process and may deter future participation.”
The elections gave Buhari, 76, a second four-year term with 56% of the vote, while Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President and candidate of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, came second with 41%. The ruling party also won a majority of parliamentary seats.
At least 58 people, including election officials, were killed in voting-related violence, according to the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, a coalition of civic groups that monitored the vote.
Abubakar and the opposition PDP have filed a court petition challenging the presidential election outcome, arguing he would’ve won but for rigged voting in Buhari’s favour.

*-marks-another-nigerian-lecturer-caught-pants-down target=_blank>S** for Marks: Another Nigerian Lecturer Caught Pants Down

The management of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, says it has begun investigations into an allegation of sexual misconduct involving one of its lecturers, Dr. O. O Aduwo.
Mr. Bode Olofinmuagun, Head, Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs of the institution in a statement on Saturday, said that the university had also queried the lecturer concerned.
”The attention of the management of Ekiti State University has been drawn to a video that has gone viral on an alleged s** scandal involving one of our lecturers.
“The video allegedly fingered one Dr. O. O. Aduwo of the Department of Accounting as the culprit and query has been issued to the accused lecturer, to state his own side of the story.
“This will be followed by a panel which would dig deep into the matter,” he said.
Olofinmuagun said the university would not condone any act of sexual harassment in the university.
This, he said, necessitated the query issued to the concerned lecturer to defend himself of the allegation as a first step in the spirit of due process.
“Thereafter, a panel of investigation will be constituted to get to the root of the matter, while the findings of the panel will be made public.
”The general public is hereby assured that management will continue to be transparent and will not allow such a matter that could smear its good image to be swept under the carpet,” the university’s spokesman added.
The lecturer was allegedly caught pants down a couple of days ago, trying to have carnal knowledge of one of his students (name withheld) as a condition to pass exams.

target=_blank>Eagles Set For Friendly Against Teranga Lions

Senegal’s Teranga Lions is Africa’s number one-ranked team, but the Super Eagles (ranked third) are determined to give a good account of themselves when both teams square up in Ismailia on Sunday evening.
Feelers from the camp indicate only a very positive ambience with players and officials thinking of how to bring honour and glory to the nation, when the whistle goes for kick off at the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations finals in seven days.
The last time both Nigeria and Senegal clashed at senior level was on 23rd March 2017, at The Hive (home of Barnet FC and London Bees) in London. Kelechi Iheanacho equalized from the spot after Moussa Sow had put Senegal ahead – both goals coming in the second half.
Three time African champions Nigeria are on an eight match unbeaten run since elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia.
Sunday’s game has been scheduled to start at 7pm Egypt time (6pm Nigeria time) and both Federations have agreed that the match be played behind closed door in order to enable both coaching crews to tinker with tactics and strategy during the encounter.
The Nigeria delegation will depart from Ismailia on Monday morning, for Alexandria – venue of their Group B attrition against Burundi, Guinea and Madagascar.

Wig-wearing Women Get Ready: Tanzania To Impose Wig, Hair Extension Tax

DHgate

A row has broken out in Tanzania over the government’s decision to impose a tax on wigs and hair extensions.
Many male and some female MPs applauded and thumped their desks in approval when Finance Minister Philip Mpango announced the tax in parliament.
Supporters of the levy say it will help women keep their hair natural.
But there has also been public outrage, with women saying they are being punished for wanting to look good in wigs and hair extensions.
Tanzanians tend to uphold traditional values, but society is changing and many women now wear wigs and extensions, the BBC’s Aboubakar Famau reports from the capital, Dodoma.
In his budget speech in parliament on Thursday, Mr. Mpango announced a 25% tax on imported wigs and hair extensions and a 10% tax on those made locally as part of a series of measures aimed at increasing government revenue.
The cheapest wigs currently costs around $4 (£3.40), but they can sell for up to $130.
Mr. Mpango also scrapped the exemption on value-added tax placed on sanitary towels, saying consumers had not benefited as businesses did not reduce prices when it was introduced
