target=_blank>Protesters Throng Abuja Over Indiscriminate Arrest And Sexual Assaults Of Women By Police Personnel

Hundreds of protesters thronged Abuja, the capital of Nigeria on Friday  agitating against  the unconscionable conduct of some police officers in their handling of female detainees.
Some police officers, in April, were accused of carrying out a  series of sexual assaults on some women who were momentarily  in their custody.
“Being a woman is not a crime,” protesters chanted during the protest, which was organised by several women’s rights groups and civil society organisations.
“My body, my life,” they added.
Police raided many nightclubs, hotels and bars in Abuja last month, and in the process arrested numerous women for prostitution.
However, most of the women arrested for prostitution had denied the charge and described it as ‘trumped up’.
Recounting their ordeals in the hands of the police officers, the women said they were subjected to multiple and brutal sexual assaults by the officers.
“In Abuja women were raped, robbed and humiliated just because they are women,” Amnesty International said Friday.
“Those responsible for these violations must be brought to justice.”
Last week a presidential spokesman said that “a thorough investigation of what happened” was being carried out.
“This administration will not tolerate any violation of the individual freedoms of our people,” the spokesman added.
However, protesters on Friday said they took the promises with a pinch of salt, pointing out that more women have been arrested.
“We are asking for them to stop the raids on women,” said the lawyer for several of the women arrested, Jennifer Ogbogu, who joined the march.
Ogbogu said five women were arrested on Thursday night.
“They were reportedly grabbed off the street — including while riding motorcycles or out shopping — and “accused of prostitution”, she said.
SaharaReporters had, on May 2, reported how some of the women  sexually assaulted by police officers said they(the police officers)  used ‘pure water satchets’ as improvised condoms.

target=_blank>Police Arrest Three UniAbuja Students Who Watched Friend Drown Because He Has ‘Shakara’

Three students of the university of Abuja have been arrested in connection to the death of their friend Emmanuel Balogun who drowned in a pool.
The arrest took place after the police watched CCTV footage which showed the trio having a conversation while Balogun was drowning.
Balogun, who was 17-year-old, was said to had gone to a hotel in Abuja along with friends over the weekend when the incident occurred.
According to CCTV footage obtained by the police, the suspects took the deceased’s phones and money and returned to school without informing anyone of what had happened.
According to a friend of the family, Mystik Biu, it was a female friend that eventually informed his mother the next day.
She said, “A very dear friend’s undergraduate’s 17-year old son got drowned at the Dome hotel pool in Abuja last weekend. He was in the company of his friends.  The friends neither reported to the hotel management what happened nor to the deceased’s parents.
“They went back to the school (Uni Abuja) hostel immediately after the incident. On Monday a young girl from UNIAbuja called the mother of the deceased that they did not see Emmanuel her son in class.
“She went further to tell the parents it’s like something had happened to Emma and ended the call. The mother called the line but it was switched off. She notified her husband and they immediately placed a call to their son’s number and it was off.”
She said the parents drove that Monday night to their son’s hostel but did not see him.
It was later that they now got information that a party was hosted for fresh year students over the weekend at the hotel in town and they subsequently went to the hotel.
The family friend added, “The hotel management told them there was a case of drowning in their hotel over the weekend and directed them to the police. The police now led them to the mortuary, lo and behold it was their son.
“Later, myself and the deceased’s uncle went to the police to see the CCTV footage of what transpired at the hotel. What I saw and later heard was unbelievable.
“From the CCTV, we noticed the deceased entered the pool with three of his friends and around 3.33am he started struggling in the pool. His friends were all watching him until he stopped struggling and drowned.
“They all left the pool immediately and one took his handset; the other took his trousers and brought out the money inside the pocket and wore his shoes. They left the hotel around 4.18am according to the footage we saw.”
The police were said to have gone to the school and arrested the three friends along with some hotel staff.
The family friend said during the interrogation, one of the friends admitted that he could have rescued the deceased but the other prevented him from doing so.
She added, “One of the boys said that he wanted to raise an alarm to save the boy but the other two boys asked him not to. That the deceased is always doing ‘shakara’ because his father is rich, he went further to say that the other one said all the girls are always admiring the deceased so he should let him be. These are just 17/18 year-old boys.
“Watching the CCTV footage where the friends were watching him drown and collectively decided because there was a time they grouped together to discuss for about a minute and from the confession of one of them, it is not only traumatic for me but also disheartening.
“They watched their friend die out of jealousy and envy. According to them, it was the deceased that paid N2, 000 gate fee for them and also bought fish and juice which they all drank.
“The young man was buried today amid tears according to the wishes of his parents but his wicked friends and hotel staff are still in police custody at the force headquarters as we speak” She concluded.

Alledged N6.9bn Fraud: EFCC Set To Disown Witness For Being Hostile

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), at a Lagos Division of the Federal High Court on Friday, sought and obtained further adjournment in the fraud case against  Ayodele Fayose, ex- governor of Ekiti State and his company, Spotless.
According to  the prosecuting counsel Rotimi Jacobs SAN, his second witness in today’s proceeding  Mr. Olawale Aladegbola but who is fourteenth in the prosecution is showing signs of being a hostile witness from responses given so far and he would therefore need an adjournment to determine the type of application that would be presented before the court as regards the witness.
“My Lord, from what I am getting as responses from this witness, it looks as if this witness might become hostile as he is making statements absent from his extra judicial statement in the proof of evidence.”
The witness told justice Mojisola Olatoregun sitting in Federal high court Lagos on Friday that he worked with Zenith bank Ado Ekiti as bullion Van driver as of 2015.
“I need to know the nature of application to be made before your lordship. I had no prior indication that the witness was going to change his mind. I want your lordship to adjourn this matter for me to make appropriate applications because he has cast aspersions on his cashier officer on cover up.”
Mr Jacobs also said, he would have declared the witness hostile immediately, but he had no necessary prior documents to show the court to prove that the witness is making contrary statements prior to previous statements made by same witness which is necessary for him to prove to the court that the witness has turned hostile and to declare him as such.  Objecting to the prayer, counsel to the 1st defendant Ola Olanipekun SAN said he was surprised the prosecuting counsel is making such prayers to the court.
“I am surprised my colleague is making such prayers. Witnesses are meant to say the truth and the fact that a witness is casting aspersions is no ground to seek adjournment. ” “This is a court of justice and we ought to take what the witness says.
“An application for adjournment because the prosecution is not comfortable with the statement of a witness is no ground for adjournment.” The counsel to the 2nd defendant, Olawale Ojo SAN in his objection also said such grounds for adjournment had no basis in law.
“The multi million naira question is what is the reason for the application for adjournment? According to the prosecution, ‘It appears the witness from answers he is giving is hostile and I need to know the nature of application to make’, this reason is untenable in law. ”
“They should be prepared for all situations. The statement made is not before your lordship to even arrive at the possibility is a conflict. The law is trite and adjournment is not given to counsels to go back to their chambers to figure out how to go about their case. ”
“Section 230 of the evidence act is clear on how to treat a hostile witness. ”
The presiding Judge Mojisola Olatoregun in replying to the claim of the prosecution that his obligation to protect the witness is inhibiting him from out right declaring the witness hostile said “your primary disposition is to the court. You do not protect anybody at the expense of justice. What stops you from declaring him hostile right now? You can seek adjournment based on I’ll preparation. ”
However, after further argument from the prosecuting counsel, the judge Mrs. Olatoregun agreed to adjourn proceedings and continue with the witness cross-examination  on the 14th of May at 1pm.
The witness Adewale Aladegbola who said as at 2015, he was a driver with Zenith Bank claims that one Oputu Okemotin told him about a situation where they had unofficially picked up cash at Afam and he was asked to help cover it up and pretend as if it was official.
The witness also told the court that he majorly drove bullion vans or escort vans for the bank while moving money and when there is no cash to move, he works in the marketing department of the bank at the banks branch in Ado Ekiti.
Earlier in the  proceedings, Aliyu Mohammed, the head of payment section at the Abuja branch of CBN  confirmed to the court that in the 5th and 13th of June respectively, payment mandates tendered before the court and admitted as exhibit S and S1 respectively were presented before the Central Bank payment section for the payment of N200 million and N2billion respectively to the diamond account of Silva McNamara from the office of the National Security Adviser, duly authorised by the NSA Sambo Dasuki himself.
