Governor Zulum Urges Military To Be More Proactive During Visit To Borno Rocket Attack Victims

Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, has called on the military to step up their operations to tackle the activities of terrorists in the city.
Zulum made the call following an early morning rocket attack on 1,000 housing estate and three other places in Maiduguri, the state capital, by terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram/ISWAP.

The estate is located along Kano-Maiduguri Road near 333 military battalion.
Speaking during the visit, Zulum noted that the insurgents came close to Maiduguri before firing the explosives.
He said, “It seems the insurgents came very close to the town, the military has to wake up and ensure adequate surveillance. This is something that we can avert its occurrence. For the insurgents to have come such close to fire rockets, I think there is something wrong that we should have to check.”
Governor Zulum stated assured that government will do everything to prevent further attacks on Maiduguri and environs.
“We have to fortify Maiduguri town, we have to ensure adequate patrols on a daily basis to avert future attacks.
“It is very sad and unfortunate we have to witness this kind of attacks at this time.
“I will constitute a small committee to ascertain the level of the damage and advise government on how to avert future occurrence,” Zulum said.

Following the latest development, all international arrivals to the UK will now be required to take pre-departure COVID-19 tests, the Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, said on Saturday.
UK citizens and residents will be able to enter the country from Nigeria but they will have to pay to stay in a quarantine for 10 days, Sky reports.
The change starts from 4:00am on Monday, according to Javid.
“Nigeria is second only to South Africa for cases linked to Omicron,” he said.
He added that there are “27 cases already in England and that’s growing”.
Javid also said the measures are “hugely unfortunate” for people who already had travel plans, but insisted that they would be “temporary”.
“We want to remove them as soon as we possibly can,” he added, saying that “vaccines remain our first line of defence”.

The irate youth reportedly searched him, found the substance on him and tied his hands to an electric pole.
A eyewitness said, “They saw him coming out from a bunk where drugs are sold. They suspected he had Mkpurummiri in his possession. They quickly searched him and found the substance. They immediately tired his hands to an electric pole and started beating him.
“He lost consciousness and was rushed to Anara Health Centre but unfortunately there was no doctor on duty. They rushed him to another hospital at Umunachi where he was pronounced dead.”
Lately, there have been sensitisations in the media and various parts of the South-East on the dangers of ingesting this particular hard drug.

Lagos APC Faction Defects To PDP

Lagos4Lagos Movement, a faction of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, has formally defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.
On Saturday, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, led the group into the PDP at a ceremony held in Lagos, Daily Trust reports.

The Lagos4Lagos movement under the leadership of Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has been reportedly having a running battle with the APC leadership in the state.
The group conducted parallel congresses during the ward, local government and state congresses of the APC recently.
But the congresses conducted by the Jandor-led group were not recognised as the national secretariat of the party ratified the congresses held by the APC faction loyal to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Jandor, who has indicated interest in contesting the 2023 governorship election in the state, led his members from the 20 local governments of the state to the PDP on Saturday.
While receiving the new PDP members, Saraki assured them that they “are moving to the party that would rescue Nigeria, to the party that would rescue Lagos State, to the party that would change the fortune of this country”.

Keren-Happuch: Nigerians Sign Petition Calling For Probe Into Murder Of Abuja Student Allegedly Raped To Death

An online petition has been launched on the web-based petition aggregator, change.org, seeking a probe into the death of Keren-Happuch, a 14-year-old boarding house pupil of Premiere Academy, Lugbe, Abuja, who was allegedly raped.
SaharaReporters observed that the petition already had 134 signatories as of the time of filing this report out of the 200 signatures it sought.

The petition was started by one Franklin Obesta to the UNICEF, Human Rights Campaign, Hillary Clinton, Change.org, the United Nations and United States Department of Health and Human Services.
The petitioner stated that the school had to provide some answers as to how a condom got into the body of the 14-year-old, who was at the time at the school’s boarding facility.
It read, “This petition is for Keren-Happuch Aondodoo Akpagher, a 14 year-old student of Premiere Academy, Lugbe, Abuja, Nigeria who was raped, sodomised anally, bullied into silence, and died of septic shock from a condom left in her genitals.
”The school management has successfully stonewalled and prevented all information from emerging.
”The post-mortem examination on the body of the deceased confirmed that Keren-Happuch had “whitish patches and excoriations on the labia majora and patulous a*** opening and laxed a*** sphincter with hymen absent”, which they argued is “a clear confirmation of sexual abuse that is rape and sodomisation of Keren-Happuch.
”Let the school management stop their media claims that Keren-Happuch died of diabetes and provide answers to the autopsy report and explain how condom got into the deceased genitals since she stayed in the boarding school.
”Personally, I have been a victim of rape at the age of 12. I battled the memories of my abuses up to 25 years. The experience created an unusual hatred in me towards people and it greatly affected my social life.
“On the account of recovering from the mental effect of the abuses I suffered from the abuse, I take seriously all cases of rape till justice is served or the victim is healed.”
SaharaReporters recall that in July, mother of the victim, Vihimga Akpagher, lamented the death of her child while attributing it to carelessness on the part of the school management.
According to the mother of the deceased, Karen-Happuch was alleged to have died of an infection after a condom was found in her private part.
It was believed that the girl was sexually abused in the school before her mother took her to the hospital on June 19, 2021 for treatment.
Karen-Happuch, however, died two days later in a hospital in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja.
Vihigma said her daughter had called her a few days before her death, asking her to come and withdraw her from the school due to the state of her health.
She said though the school was unwilling to release the pupil and even argued that there was no need to fret, her daughter remained adamant and even cried that she wanted to go home.
Vihimga was quoted as saying, “When I called the principal, he said my daughter would need to be isolated for five days (upon her return). I felt that I should go home since the school said it could take care of her. On my way home, my daughter called again using the school’s phone and asked where I was. I told her that I came, but turned back and she started crying.
“So, I got angry and asked her why she was stressing me since she would be returning home soon for the holiday. So, she asked to speak to her uncle. She said, ‘You people don’t know why I am asking you to come and pick me and you are leaving.”
The bereaved mum said she was still contemplating on whether to return to the school or not when she was informed by the housemother that her daughter could hardly walk the day before, and advised that the young girl be taken to a hospital for a proper check-up.
She added that she picked up her daughter, but when Karen-Happuch was brought home, she was not her usual self and seemed withdrawn.
The mother narrated, “When we got home, she wasn’t her usual happy self. She switched off all the lights. She could not even look at us in the face. She slept throughout that day and ate some food.
“But by the morning of Monday, June 21, 2021, I noticed that her condition had deteriorated and took her to hospital, and while examining her, the doctor saw a discharge, ran a test, and discovered that it was a condom that was left in her. They tested her urine and it contained sperm; and like that, infection and sepsis led to her death.
“I picked her up on June 19 and she died on June 21. She slipped into a coma and died. She was traumatised.”
Vihimga said she challenged Premiere Academy but the institution promised to look into the matter.
When asked if she was sure that Karen-Happuch was defiled at the school and not at home, Vihimga said, “My daughter was diabetic. If that thing had been in her for one month, she would have died long ago.”
She also alleged that she got information that at least three employees of the school had been dismissed for sexual abuse, but the management was more concerned with protecting its image.
Meanwhile, the school issued an official statement countering the statement of the mother.
The school stated that Karen left the school in a healthy condition as opposed to what her mother said.

West Ham Defeat Chelsea In Fierce English Premier League Clash

West Ham United on Saturday afternoon defeated Chelsea Football Club of London 3-2 in a fierce English Premier League tie.
The game, which saw Chelsea take the lead in the 29th minute through Brazilian defender, Thiago Silva, witnessed several tensed moments throughout the game especially as both teams made efforts to outplay the other.

Manuel Lanzini equalised for the Hammers in the 40th minute but Mason Mount fired another goal for Chelsea to put the visitors ahead during the break.
However, goals from Jarrod Bowen and Arthur Masuaku in the second half for West Ham ensured that David Moyes’ side went away with maximum points on the afternoon.
The defeat is a major setback for Chelsea, who hopes to consolidate their hold at the top of the table in the face of hot pursuit by Liverpool and reigning league champions, Manchester City.

Lagos Court Sentences Ex-Customs Officer, Two Others To 16-year Jail Term For Importing 661 Pump-action Rifles From Turkey

File photo used to illustrate story.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has sentenced a retired customs officer, Mahmud Hassan, and two others to 16 years imprisonment over conspiracy and unlawful importation of 661 pump-action rifles.
The two other persons convicted alongside Hassan are Oskar Okafor; Donatus Achinulo and Mahmud’s company, Hassan Trades Limited.

File photo used to illustrate story.

The presiding judge, Justice Ayokunle Faji, however, acquitted and discharged one other defendant, Abdulahi Danjuma, of all the charges.
On count one, which was on conspiracy, Justice Faji found the first, second and third defendants guilty and sentenced them to eight years imprisonment each.
The court, therefore, ordered the forfeiture of the properties of the convicts to the Federal Government of Nigeria. Also, the court ordered that the company, Hassan Trading Limited, used as a vehicle to smuggle the arms, be wound up and assets forfeited to the Federal Government.
Justice Faji, however, discharged and acquitted the fifth defendant.
While delivering judgment, the judge held that the offence committed by the convicts borders on the security of the country.
He added that although the relevant provisions of the law for the offence, which they were charged and convicted prescribed life imprisonment, he said the court exercises its discretion.
The trial judge said he would refrain from giving a maximum punishment but that the convicts must be made examples to serve as deterrent to other would-be criminals.
Justice Faji particularly frowned at the conduct of the second convict, a retired customs officer, saying that if the container was not intercepted and the guns fell into the hands of criminals in the society, the negative effect can only be imagined.
In the charge by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, the accused brought the rifles from Turkey through the Apapa seaport in Lagos.
He added that the arms were imported in a 40-feet container, which they falsely claimed to be steel doors.
The convicts were also alleged to have forged some documents including a bill of lading, a Form M and a Pre-Arrival Assessment Report to facilitate the smuggling of the said rifles.
According to the prosecution, the defendants also forged a bill of lading issued at Istanbul on January 9, 2017, falsely claiming that it was issued in Shanghai, China.
He said they intended to evade the payment of customs duty by filling “steel door” as the content of the container instead of rifles.
They were also said to have allegedly offered a bribe of N400, 000, 00 to an official of the Nigeria Customs Service attached to the Federal Operative Unit to avoid a “100 per cent search on the container with number PONU 825914/3.”
The prosecution also alleged that the first convict, Hassan, corruptly gave N1million to government officials at the Apapa port to prevent the search by customs officials.
They, however, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.
The judge said the sentence will run concurrently.

Suppliers Of Food Items To Boko Haram In Borno Nabbed

The North East Chairman and Commander of Hunters/Vigilantes (Sarkin Baka) in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State, Shawulu Yohanna, has arrested some people supplying food to Boko Haram and recovered N6.050million in their possession.
The development followed calls by concerned residents in Hawul and other communities of Garkida town of Adamawa State including Ishaku Yakubu, Mohammed Madu, Isa Mwajim and Peter John demanding Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Mohammed Ali Ndume, and Chief of Army Staff, General Farouk Yahaya, to deploy troops of ‘Operation Hadin Kai’ to the axis to protect lives and property of people as ahead of yuletide.

Vanguard Newspaper

The community has come under series of attacks by terrorists and have since been without military formations since the beginning of the Boko Haram crisis.
The arrest of the Boko Haram food suppliers and recovery of over N6million was coordinated by Yohanna at the fringes of Sangere community bordering Tashan Alade, Sabon Gari and some parts of Askira Uba council area where Brigadier General Dzarma Zurkusu and four other soldiers were ambushed and killed by terrorists during operations in the theatre last month.
“The North East Chairman of Hunters, Alhaji Yohanna, and his team did a wonderful job this week. They acted on intelligence information that was given to them by some farmers.
“The farmers volunteered and hinted Yohanna that they usually sighted a truck conveying food items into the fringes of Sangare Village. If you are in Sangare, there are roads that will link you to some parts of Sabon Gari in Damboa Local Government, the other road will take you to Askira-Uba axis or Garkida and even to Hawul Local Government Area.
“Upon receiving the information, Yohanna mobilised his team and stormed the spot in the evening. Luckily, the team sighted the vehicle after its owner was about to hand over the food items to the terrorists, they (hunters) engaged them with fire and captured the driver and some other two occupants, while the terrorists fled having known the terrain better than their suppliers.
“After arrest, Yohanna interrogated the driver and the two occupants and they admitted that they have been supplying Boko Haram with food items for quite some time from Taraba State. They also told the hunters that they do supply even the commander of kidnappers in Taraba with food items.
“As it is, Yohanna and his team have already handed over the suspects to the Commanding Officer of the 231 Battalion, Biu in Borno State for further action,” a source disclosed.
