EXCLUSIVE: Mamman Daura, Buhari’s Powerful Nephew, Among Prominent Faces Absent At President’s Daughter’s Wedding

Mamman Daura

Despite being scheduled to be father of the day during the wedding between Hanan, one of the daughters of President Muhammadu Buhari, and Mohammed Turad, son of a former lawmaker from Kano State, Mamman Daura, a nephew and close confidant of the President, was absent at the occassion.
SaharaReporters gathered that Daura’s absence might not be unconnected with his trip to United Kingdom for medical treatment over an undisclosed ailment despite claims by the Presidency that he travelled for leisure.

Mamman Daura

The online newspaper had in August reported how he was flown in a private jet to the UK after exhibiting respiratory difficulties with symptoms similar to Coronavirus.
The former journalist, who is an integral member of the ‘Cabal’, a group of influential individuals around President Buhari, who help him make key decisions, is said to have had a history of renal crisis and had regularly visited the West for medical attention.
A source, who confirmed Daura’s absence at the ceremony, told SaharaReporters that the event was held inside a hall adjacent the President’s office instead of the banquet hall usually used for high calibre social events.
The source further disclosed that the wedding had 80 persons in attendance.
The low number of guests, it was gathered, was partly due to the Coronavirus scare earlier in the week in the Presidential Villa.
On Wednesday, SaharaRepoters revealed how some guests for the wedding were declining the invitation over fear of contracting Coronavirus especially after it emerged that President Buhari’s closest aide and Senior Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs, Sarki Abba, had recently recovered from the virus.

COVID-19 Scare: Some Guests Decline Invitation To President Buhari Daughter’s Wedding

Abba, who has since resumed duties after recovering from the virus, was considered still unsafe to mingle with others inside the Presidential Villa by some persons including the First Lady.
Mrs Buhari also opposed the idea of Daura being a part of the event over his health status but her husband insisted that he must not be stopped attending and even went ahead to designate him father of the day.
This situation sent panic among some guests, who chose not to attend the ceremony and risk their health.

Who Wants Oshiomhole Dead? By Ozodinukwe Okenwa

SOC Okenwa

Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, the former Governor of Edo State, ex-labour union leader and the immediate past National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party, was recently involved in a ghastly auto accident that claimed the lives of two policemen and injured others, some presently in critical conditions at the hospital. The grievous incident reportedly occurred close to Oluku junction, along Benin-Ore highway, when a trailer ran into the vehicle conveying the police from the back, knocking it into the bush before hitting Oshiomhole’s car. Oshiomhole escaped unhurt!

SOC Okenwa

The controversial diminutive man from Iyamho was said to be travelling to join the candidate of APC and other top chieftains of the party in a rally scheduled at Usen, Ovia South-west Local Government Area of the state. Following the tragic incident the rally was called off in melancholic deference for the dead.
Edo state remains a volatile mid-western political space given the looming governorship poll scheduled for the 19th of this month. Violence had erupted in different areas and recriminations abound in different camps over importation and arming of thugs, rigging of the election and assassination plots from one party to the other.
There are two leading political parties and personalities slugging it out for the occupation of the Dennis Osadebay Government House in Benin City. The hitherto ruling (and now opposition) APC and the erstwhile opposition (and now ruling) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The personalities involved in the guber clash of the titans are the incumbent Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and the opposition challenger, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
But Comrade Oshiomhole factors into the mortal electoral game due to the long-running feud with the incumbent Governor whom he helped come to power but who had denied him the ‘fruit’ of godfatherism. The Comrade is dominating the campaign with his oratorical power and experience as he did four years ago when he led the campaign for his now estranged successor.
The Edo guber poll is interestingly polarizing in many ways. And the outcome, one acceptable to every stakeholder or gladiator, may well be even more polarizingly interesting post-September 19. The consequence of victory or failure could be very hard to bear for the vanquished party. The drama, violence and accusations and counter-accusations had gone a long way to demonstrating what to expect in the event of manipulation from any quarters.Following the devastating auto crash the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Chris Azebamwan,‎ had alleged that the crash was a “premeditated plot” to take the life of the former Edo Governor whom he said had been “a thorn in the flesh of the PDP” since his return from Abuja to join the electioneering campaign of the APC candidate. Conspiracy theory or just an imagination gone wild? The trailer, according to an eyewitness account, ran into the vehicle conveying the police team from the back, knocked it into the bush, before hitting Oshiomhole’s car, causing the death of two policemen in the convoy. But the media aide to the former National Chairman of APC, Victor Oshioke, had in a statement issued hours after the bloody incident alleged ‘assassination attempt’ on his principal!Though accidents (some fatal) often happen on Nigerian ill-maintained delapidated roads this particular one involving the Oshiomhole ‘gang’ could be said to have had more than meets the eye. Was it a natural accident or an incident commanded and commandeered against the vociferous ex-Governor? Who wants him dead if the latter turns out to be true?In politics high-profile figures had been eliminated in Nigeria and elsewhere around the world through conspiracies or conspiratorial machinations of powerful opponents. What we are insinuating here is that we had witnessed ‘arranged’ assassinations and near-assassinations involving the rich and powerful.Comrade Oshiomhole is both loved and loathed in Edo state in particular and Nigeria in general. In equal measure you have those who see him as a success story in terms of gubernatorial stewardship. And above all, as a local ‘hero’ for standing up fearlesslly to the godfathers and moneybags during his eventful years as Governor. And others who think of him as a failure at the national political level who now, back home, desperately wants to ‘Tinubunize’ Edo politics for his percuniary interests.Yet no matter how anyone sees him at the state or national level the Iyamho-born politician remains ever relevant in the scheme of things — especially in his home state of Edo. No matter his achievements or lack of same thereof he has cleverly positioned himself for the future, writing his story and history as it suits him.
By the time the controversial election in Edo state comes and goes someone somewhere would have cause to gnash his teeth in defeat. If the result favours the current Governor then Comrade Oshiomhole would have been killed politically in Edo State. Those who allegedly failed to ‘kill’ him on the Benin-Ore highway physically would have succeeded in sending him to political golgotha. And that bitter outcome may have been behind the Comrade’s desperation. If Comrade Adams had been sent out of this world by the horrible accident then those that masterminded it allegedly must have hoped that without him by the corner of the so-called Pastor victory is assured. But now that he is still very much with us in flesh and blood there are fears that he could influence the poll one way or another if only to see his nemesis fall from his uneasy governorship perch.
We ask again: who wanted the Comrade dead? While we recognise that investigation is still on-going to unravel the circumstances surrounding the gory incident we can only say that nothing is impossible in politics Nigeriana. If Minister Bola Ige could be killed gruesomely in his bedroom and up until now no one had been apprehended or jailed for the murder then no one is safe! For all intents and purposes no one may have wished Oshiomhole dead at 68. Yet someone somewhere could have wanted him dead to put a permanent end to his godfatherism inclination and meddlesomeness in Edo politics.
Whether dead or alive (however) what the Edolites simply want is a free and fair gubernatorial election where the people would have the chance to freely elect their Governor without intimidation, inducement or incitement to violence.SOC Okenwasoco_abj_2006_rci@hotmail.fr

Only President Buhari Is Empowered By Law To Fix Fuel Price! By Femi Falana

The Federal Government had been using the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency to fix the prices of petroleum products. But following the recent challenge of the usurpation of the powers of the Minister of Petroleum Resources to fix the pump price by the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), the Federal Government decided to transfer the power to the Petroleum Products Marketing Company. Thus, the PPMC announced a new ex-depot price of N151.56 for PMS last week. In justifying the illegal and insensitive increase in the pump price of fuel the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, had said, “Government is no longer in the business of fixing prices for petroleum products, we have stepped back. Our focus now is on protecting the interest of the consumers and making sure that marketers are not.”

In the same vein, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, has publicly confirmed the decision of the Federal Government to hand over the duty of the Minister of Petroleum Resources to the so-called global market forces. Thus, while speaking from Abuja during a web seminar organised by the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, last week, explained that all tough measures adopted by the Federal Government were geared towards weathering the current headwinds posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to her, “What that means is that the price of refined products (petrol) will be determined by the global price of crude oil, so the price will keep changing according to how the global market operates.”
With respect, ASCAB insists that decision of the Federal Government to abdicate its responsibility to fix the price of fuel is the height of official impunity, which should not be tolerated in any democratic society. Indeed, it is a reckless violation of section 6 (1) of the Petroleum Act, which provides that “The minister may by order published in the federal gazette fix the prices at which petroleum products or any particular class or classes thereof may be sold in Nigeria or in any particular part or parts thereof.”
In the case of Bamidele Aturu versus Attorney-General of the Federation (unreported suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/591/2009), the Federal High Court declared illegal and unconstitutional the policy decision of the federal government to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry contrary to the combined effect of the provisions of the Price Control Act and the Petroleum Act. According to the learned trial judge, Adamu Bello J. (as he then was): “It seems to me that a combined reading of the provisions of sections 4 and 6 of the Police Control Act and the Petroleum Act leaves one in no doubt that the control of and regulation of prices of petroleum products among others, is a legal duty imposed on the government of the Federation acting through its relevant functionaries i.e Minister of Petroleum Resources and the minister in charge of commerce by the two acts of the National Assembly referred to, so any decision by the government to deregulate the downstream sector as it affects the fixing of price of petroleum products must contend with those enactments. In other words, any decision to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by not fixing the prices of products while these extant laws remain in force and has not been amended or abrogated, will be in conflict with those enactments an therefore be illegal.”
Since the judgments and orders of the Federal High Court are binding on the Federal Government as well as all authorities and persons in Nigeria pursuant to section 287 (3) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 the decision of the PPMC to increase the price of petrol is contemptuous, illegal, null and void. Therefore, the Federal Government should cancel the illegal fuel hike and call the management of the PPMC to order for usurping the power which is exclusively vested in the Minister of Petroleum Resources. ASCAB is compelled to call on President Buhari to exercise his statutory power as the Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources to protect the interests of the Nigerian people by fixing “the prices at which petroleum products or any particular class or classes thereof may be sold in Nigeria or in any particular part or parts thereof”.

Dino Melaye: Malami Writes Group, Demands More Time To Release Corruption File

Nigeria’s Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has requested for more time before he could release files containing corruption charges against former senator, Dino Melaye. The Civil Society Network Against Corruption had accused Malami of scuttling the trial of the former lawmaker linked with sleaze both at home and abroad.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman CSNAC, Mr Olanrewaju Suraju, Malami requested for an extension of time to study the request for the release of the case file.Melaye, who represented Kogi West was accused of using fictitious names to run series of foreign accounts contrary to the regulations of the Code of Conduct Bureau. In several letters written by CSNAC, the group demanded the file said to have earlier been retrieved from the CCB by Malami, thereby frustrating efforts to bring the lawmaker to justice. In the letter signed by state counsel, Nafisat Negi Ibrahim,  the minister said that in view of the nature of the request the Ministry of Justice demands an extension of time to enable it respond to the request in linewith Section 6 of the Freedom of Information Act 2011.

EXPOSED: How Nigeria’s Attorney-General, Malami Stopped Prosecution Of Dino Melaye

On Sunday, CSNAC said the request of the minister for more time to produce the file was “confusing”.The group said, “We have received response from the Justice Minister. The language is similar to responses in the past. Its a case that will be pursued to its logical end until the files are released and Senator Malaye brought to book.”Suraju said the Melaye trial remains one of the striking cases of corruption that raises suspicions of state complicity indicating an attempt to cover up a high profile case.
According the group, “The minister, who recently accused the suspended Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, of delaying investigation in a complex matter of P&ID in less than one year of investigation, will have no justification for holding a file involving a concluded investigation for almost three years.”On 16th of May, 2018, the anti-corruption group had requested for update on the petition on the matter and got a response from the CCB dated May 22, 2018 stating the transfer of the case file on the request of the Attorney General from the Bureau to the Federal Ministry of Justice.Again on March 13, 2020 a request for an update on the matter was submitted to CCB with another reminder in another later dated August 7, 2020.The ministry admitted taking over the case file by Malami.

Toxic Waste From Chinese Company Kills Three In Ondo Forest Reserve

Three persons have been killed by toxic waste from a Chinese company, WeWood, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The victims, Monday Akinmusire, Samuel Louis and Ododolewa Adebowale, died last week in a forest reserve in the town following the discharge of the deadly chemical.
SaharaReporters’ findings shows that the trio had gone into the forest to fell trees for sale when the incident occurred.

It was also gathered that two of the deceased, Akinmusire and Louis, were into wood business while Adebowale was already writing his West African Senior School Certificate Examination at the time of the incident.
A family member of one of the victims, Akinmusire Emmanuel, revealed that the victims went to the forest but never returned early, prompting their loved ones to initiate a search party.
He added that the team went to the forest and saw the motorcycle of the three victims, which further raised concerns about the whereabouts of the trio.
According to him, after the team could not locate the trio, they quickly reported to the traditional head of the community, the Olufara of Akinfosile, Oba Olamide Ayodele.
Emmanuel further explained that the traditional head had to call the attention of the Divisional Police Officer, the Vigilante Corps, and Amotekun Corps to inform them about the development.
He added that the joint security task force went into the forest and found their bodies inside a ditch covered with some black substance.
“The bodies of the victims were seen on the flowing track of the toxic waste which killed them instantly as there was no sign that they attempted to struggle with death,” he said.
The bodies of the victims were later evacuated and deposited at the morgue of a private hospital in Ore.
The deaths of the victims led to a protest among youths of the community, who stormed the company to demand answers to the incident.
Our correspondent gathered that the Ondo State Government had leased the forest to the Wewood Company, which is into cassava ethanol processing to clear and replant trees thereby allowing saw millers and plank dealers to fell the existing trees.
Although residents of the community disclosed that those into wood business and using the forest, were paying tax to government officials monitoring their activities.
A staff of the Chinese firm confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Sunday.
Lawyer to the victims, Dayo Akindejoye, condemned the incident, promising to take up the case legally.
Tee-Leo Ikoro, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, while confirming the incident, described the case as an accident, noting that the toxic waste overflowed and caused havoc.

Buhari’s Supporters Call Daily Trust Newspaper Toilet Paper For Cartoon Depicting Lavish Wedding Of President’s Daughter

Supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari have described a Nigerian newspaper, Daily Trust, as toilet paper over a cartoon published by the tabloid.
On Sunday, Daily Trust published a cartoon depicting the lavish wedding of Buhari’s daughter, Hanan, which held on Friday inside Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, at a time life was increasingly getting harder for citizens as a result of government’s harsh economic policies.

The cartoon shows the President’s wife, Aisha, holding pictures of the wedding on her hands and displaying in faces of Nigerians struggling to find their balance in life.
The cartoon drew inspiration from Aisha’s several posts on Instagram where she displayed pictures of Hanan’s wedding.
In reaction to the cartoon, the Twitter handle of the artist, Bulama Mustapha, had been besieged by Buhari’s supporters, calling the Daily Trust employee names and even insinuating that he should blame himself if he was arrested for the cartoon.
One supporter of Buhari, Abdul Ishaka, described Daily Trust as “toilet paper” for publishing the cartoon.
He said, “Dear Daily Trust Toilet Paper, What is really the meaning of this disgusting cartoon? This is pure evil and hate mongering….Aisha Buhari and her family did a very quiet wedding for their kid and you have a place in your dark heart to mock them?”

Another loyalist of Buhari, Mohammed Shehu Usman, wrote, “This has further proved that your publication is toilet paper and should be trashed in the bottom pit of hell. Shame on you.”
Recall that SaharaReporters had exclusively reported how event planners for the wedding of Hanan and her groom, Mohammed Turad, were flown in from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to add colour and spice to the ceremony.
This news media also gathered  that most of the items including souvenirs used for the occasion were brought in from the Arabian country.

P&ID Scandal: UK Court Verdict Victory For Magu, Says Lawyer

Wahab Shittu, counsel to suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has described the recent judgment, which overturned a $10bn arbitrarily awarded against Nigeria in a case against Process and Industrial Developments as a victory for his client.
In a petition to President Muhammadu Buhari, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, whose complaint led to the removal of Magu, accused the suspended anti-graft chief of failing to act timeously on a presidential directive by the Ministry of Justice to commence investigation into the matter.

But delivering his judgment on Friday, Ross Cranston, a judge of the Business and Property Courts of England and Wales, had said he granted Nigeria’s application for an extension of time and relief from sanctions based on the efforts of the Magu-led EFCC in establishing fraud and corruption in the contract.
Shittu said the judgment had vindicated Magu and exposed the good work of the EFCC under his watch.
He said, “I feel a strong desire to react to the latest UK verdict against P&ID in the context of the HAGF’S memo which triggered the ongoing judicial commission of inquiry probing the activities of the suspended Acting Chairman of EFCC Mr. Ibrahim Magu hereinafter referred to as “my client” and the vindication the outcome of the UK verdict represents in our national consciousness.
“It will be recalled that in the HAGF’S widely publicised memo to the President, the nation’s Chief Law Officer wrote amongst others against our client as follows; by letter dated 26th June 2018 that was copied to the Acting Chairman of EFCC, the Chief of Staff to the President conveyed Your Excellency’s directive mandating the investigation of the P& ID matter. This directive was followed up by a comprehensive letter dated 28th June 2018 to the EFCC setting out facts and documents for the investigation.  As important as this matter is with its attendant threat to our national assets, the EFCC did not accord this presidential directive with any serious attention until a year after around July/August 2019 when the scale had already tilted dangerously against Nigeria.

Despite Malami’s Allegations Against Magu, UK Judge Hails Role Of Suspended EFCC Boss In P&ID Case

“In view of this delay, police were requested to also conduct an independent investigation into the P&ID matter. In the same vein, in December 2019, there was request to the Ag. Chairman of the EFCC to forward copies of all charges, proof of evidence, and judgments in relation to all cases filed by the EFCC against P&ID and their associates, copies of warrants of arrest, copies of other documents in relation to the ongoing investigations.
“The above documents were required by the police to enable it interface with Interpol on this matter. The Acting Chairman of EFCC did not respond to my request. The above is just one out of several correspondences which institution has had cause to send to the EFCC and which were neither acknowledged nor replied. Examples of cases where the Acting Chairman either refused to respond to requests from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Solicitor-General of the Federation are attached as (“Annex 3’’).
“In total, it is estimated that the Federal Government of Nigeria lose or would have lost Forty-Seven Billion, thirty-six million, five hundred and twenty eighty thousand, two hundred and nine Naira (N47, 036,528,209.00).  In dollars, the estimated amount would be approximately, ($85,008,917.43) Eighty-five million, eight thousand, and nine hundred and seventeen pence and in pounds, it would be Seventy-four thousand Pounds (N74,000.00).

“These losses would be directly linked to the lack of response by the Acting Chairman or lack of coordination and the Acting Chairman’s recalcitrant attitude to work.
“The above conclusions from the HAGF may have been seriously questioned by the outcome of the UK  court’s verdict which has sent Nigerians and the Nigerian ruling elite in a celebration mood and exposed the good work of EFCC under Magu’s watch.”
