COVID-19: Despite Pause Of Trial By WHO, Nigeria To Continue Chloroquine Trial

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has said it would continue the trial of Hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 treatment despite the announcement of a temporary pause by the World Health Organisation.
WHO had on Monday cited safety concerns for the temporary pause of the trial of Hydrochloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
Speaking on the continuation of the trial in Nigeria, Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, who spoke during an interview on Television Continental on Tuesday, said the drug had proven to be effective for mild case COVID-19 patients.

She said, “There is data to prove that Hydroxychloroquine worked for many COVID-19 patients.
“Therefore, we would continue our own clinical trials in Nigeria. Hydroxychloroquine has been proved to work at a mild stage. So the potency depends on the severity of the disease in the patient’s body.”
She added that the trial should be concluded in three to four months if medical doctors, research scientists, pharmacists, herbal experts work together.
Meanwhile, NAFDAC is set to receive the COVID-19 herbal cure from Madagascar for testing.
According to the Health Minister, Osagie Ehanire, the drug would be handed over to the Ministry of Health, who will send it to NAFDAC for validation and usage.
“We will pick it up and send to our research institutes, first to NAFDAC and then to Nigerian Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development,” Ehanire said.

E2%80%99-her Abused Nigerian Woman In Lebanon Prevented From Returning Home By Boss who Claims To ‘Own’ Her

An abused Nigerian domestic worker in Lebanon has been prevented from boarding an evacuation flight after her employer claimed he “owns” her.
The Kafala system, widespread across Lebanon and parts of the Middle East, grants employers a large say over the fate of domestic workers, who have few rights.
On Sunday, 50 trafficked Nigerian women arrived home from Lebanon along with 19 nationals, who had been stranded in the country because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, according to Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Anti-trafficking activists however, told Middle East Eye that eight women were prevented from boarding the flight including Ariwolo Olamide Temitope, 31, whose bloodied image circulated on social media last month after an altercation with her employer.

Another woman, who was rescued by Nigerian authorities after being put up for sale on Facebook, has chosen to stay in Lebanon for now.
Temitope told Aljazeera in April that she had been set up by her employer, Mahmoud Zahran, who accused her of stealing a phone while she spoke to her family in Nigeria on 25 April.
After receiving a blow to her mouth, she took a video of herself.
Temitope said that the family turned against her when she refused Zahran’s advances shortly after arriving at their home in October 2019.
Zahran’s family has denied the claims but the Lebanese authorities have banned him and his wife, Feyzeh, from hiring domestic workers and launched a criminal investigation into the allegations.
Temitope fled after the assault and contacted the Nigerian Embassy, which arranged for her to leave on the emergency evacuation flight at the weekend.
An image posted on social media shows her at the airport pushing a luggage trolley, wearing a surgical mask and a New York Yankees baseball cap. Temitope was assaulted by her Lebanese employers who then stopped her from leaving on the emergency evacuation flight. Because they own her. @NaomiCampbell @IshaSesay pic.twitter.com/IosajL63Ci— This Is Lebanon (@ThisIsLebanonLB) May 25, 2020

But activists at This is Lebanon, a coalition of former domestic workers in Lebanon that regularly names and shames abusers, said that shortly after the picture was taken, they received a text message with devastating news.
“I was not allowed to enter the plane to Nigeria. They said my madam did not approve me to leave Lebanon.”

Weeks After Deadly Explosion In Ondo Destroyed Houses, Affected Residents Allege Neglect, Lack Of Compensation Over Losses

Residents of Eleyewo, Iluabo and Osi at Oba Ile in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State are yet to heave a sigh of relief after the explosion that rocked the communities on March 28, 2020, destroying over 100 houses and other valuables.
That fateful day, a truck moving some explosive items to Edo State had broken down in the area, soon going up in flames and destroying almost anything within sight.
Our correspondent, who visited the community on Monday, came across many residents affected by the blast, who are still lamenting their losses.
Findings revealed that some residents were now taking refuge in churches, mosques, gas stations and houses of friends close to the neighbourhood since the tragic incident.

Many buildings in the area remain destroyed while owners have abandoned them for the time being.
The few ones, who are able to gather money, were seen repairing their roof when our correspondent visited the area.
Owners of Aina Awwal International School and Possibility Ground Mountain for All Nations were yet to repair their shattered buildings, it was observed during the visit by our correspondent.

Some residents, who spoke with SaharaReporters in the community, said the blast had rendered them homeless and there was no way they could raise money to rebuild their houses.
They disclosed that many of the buildings affected by the explosion and marked with red paint was being valued for compensation by owner of the company whose truck caused the explosion.

According to them, several meetings had been held to call the attention of government to their plight but none had yielded positive result so far.
One of the residents, Mrs Tope Adegoriola, whose house was badly affected by the blast, told our correspondent that life had become tougher for her and her two children since the explosion occurred.

She said, “Since the incident occurred, we can’t even sleep in the house again because the roof to the house was ripped off by the explosion even the building is no longer strong.

“So, we have packed some of our belongings to our church in the town and that is where we now stay until we are able to see money to change the roof.
“We are yet to get any compensation from the government despite all the promises. They have left us to our fate and this is sad.”
Bayo Ilerioluwa, another resident of the community, said that none of the residents affected by the explosion had been compensated for the damage done to their property.
“We are yet to get any compensation for the damages done to our building and we are still expecting because the incident is now more than a month.
“In fact, thieves and burglars have been regular visitors to some of us (residents) who manage to stay in our houses because we have nowhere to go and sleep.
“Some of the buildings have no windows again while the doors too have been badly damaged by the blast yet there is no compensation for us.”
A 65-year-old man named Ganiyu told SaharaReporters that he had been rendered homeless by the incident after losing his newly completed house in the area.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu had visited the scene and described the explosion including its effect on residents as unfortunate.
The governor however, noted that the firm that owned the explosives that destroyed the building would be made to pay for them but that has not been fulfilled till this time.

Many of the town’s residents are said to have celebrated Eid in the bush and nearby villages as a result of fear of another attack by the insurgents.

E2%80%98fought-%E2%80%99-fulani-herdsmen-attacking-father-victims Southern Kaduna: How 12-year-old Boy ‘Fought Off’ Fulani Herdsmen Attacking Father, Victims Of Massacre Recount Traumatic Ordeal

Some of the casualties of herdsmen attack on Southern Kaduna communities currently being treated in hospitals across Kaduna State are recounting their ordeal at the hands of their attackers.
Between May 19 to 24, the herdsmen attacked Idazau, Etissi, Bakin Kogi, Dutsen Gora, UN Gora, Pushu Kallah and Magunguna villages, killing five, injuring 78, destroying 607 houses and rustling 231 cows in the process.
At least 51 people are also reported missing from these attacks.
A 12-year-old boy named Filibus Magaji, who is currently hospitalised at a facility in Barau Dikko, is being hailed as a hero after he reportedly fought off the attackers as they hacked his father with dangerous weapons.

A local volunteer aid worker (name withheld) told SaharaReporters on Tuesday that although Magaji’s father survived, he is critically wounded alongside two other family members on admission.
Narrating what happened to him during the attack, she said, “Filibus’s older brother ran for his dear life when their father was being attacked. Filibus didn’t run. He tried to fight them off and luckily both survived even though terribly hurt.
“You can’t see Filibus without something moving inside you. You just can’t. While with him today, he suddenly asked to be lifted off the bed because he said he felt someone beating him.

“He kept trying to describe that he was being attacked at that moment, and another lady had to hold him to comfort and reassure him. The hospital staff say it’s routine for him to jerk up suddenly, thinking it’s happening all over again.”
She added that his mother and other family members were killed in the attacks but little Filibus is unaware because of his critical condition.
Another victim, Zipporah Jonathan, an eight year old girl recently discharged from the same hospital is unaware her parents are dead.

“When she was on admission here, she always had very terrible nightmares about the attack. She was cut on the hand with a machete and still needs urgent surgery,” a hospital source said.
Zipporah’s brother admitted at the same hospital, Isaiah, has a more severe cut than his sister.

“When he was found, only a piece of flesh held his right hand together with his bone. He also doesn’t know he is now an orphan and that his older siblings have also been killed,” the source added.
Salama was a five-day-old baby when her mother was killed on May 19 in Kajuru.

“When her mom was killed last Tuesday in Kajuru, she was five days old. She is the first child of her parents, so her father is devastated.
“I spoke with him this morning, he was in so much pain and told me he doesn’t know what to do with the baby. His marriage to his late wife was less than a year old. The baby is with her aunt at the moment,” the aid worker said.
Salama’s 80-year old grandmother survived the attack, she was with her daughter-in-law when she was killed.
Currently also hospitalised, she recalled events leading to the deadly attack on them.

“She told me today that while she was begging the killers to spare the life of the new mom and take hers instead since she was old, they shot her left arm, leaving her with a ghastly wound.
“She started crying when she was telling me she saw her daughter-in-law killed right in front of her,” the aid worker added.
