Nigerians Evacuated From Dubai Tackle Lagos Government Over Death Of Returnee

An image of Nigerians arriving in Lagos from Dubai on May 6, 2020.

Nigerians evacuated from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, have accused the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, of lying about the cause of the death of one of them.
According to the evacuees housed in Lekki, who spoke with PUNCH, the returnee from Dubai was ill and died from not being given treatment.
The people said the man did not die of COVID-19.

“The Lagos Health Commissioner came to visit us and we challenged him for saying that one of us died yesterday. What happened was that one of us had surgery in Dubai and he returned in a wheelchair.
“Instead of taking him to a hospital because he was in critical condition, they decided to keep him in the isolation centre with us for two days and his condition got worse. He was then taken to a hospital where he eventually died. But the commissioner told the public that it was COVID-19 that killed him.
“When we challenged the commissioner, he said he was misquoted by the media. We brought out our phones and told him to say it while we record, but he refused.”
The returnees also said the food they were given are ill-fitting for human consumption. VIDEO: Nigerians Recently Evacuated From Dubai Protest Ill Treatment By Government, NCDC @Fmohnigeria @NigeriaGov @NCDCgov #COVID19 WATCH FULL VIDEO: pic.twitter.com/laRU9QYxMW— Sahara Reporters (@SaharaReporters) May 13, 2020

They said they will not allow the state government carry out any COVID-19 test on them until the commissioner recants his claim on Tuesday and addresses their feeding.
They said the commissioner ran away in his black Sports Utility Vehicle while they were attempting to record him.
“As we were voicing our concerns, he ran away. We asked him a simple question, why we can’t record him if he was sincere? We are being treated like we are in Nazi Germany. At this point, we don’t even trust them to test us and give us an accurate result,” one of them said.
About 256 evacuated Nigerians reached Lagos from the United Arab Emirates on May 6, 2020.
Some are lodged in an isolation centre in Lekki, while others were taken to Ajao Estate.

OPEC Expects 8.5 Per Cent Drop In Demand For Its Oil

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has said that it expects an 8.5 per cent drop in demand for its oil for the rest of 2020.
This implies an 8.5m barrel per day drop from last year’s demand.
The organisation said this in its monthly report for May.

OPEC said that the balance between demand and supply for the fossil fuel is readjusting fast.
It was making this analysis in response to the supply glut that saw Brent trade at lows of $12 and American Western Texas Intermediate briefly enter minus last April.
“The speedy supply adjustments in addressing the current acute imbalance in the global oil market has already started showing positive response, with rebalancing expected to pick up faster in the coming quarters,” OPEC said in its monthly report.
The Saudi Arabia-led oil bloc, said the worse case scenario for the petroleum industry will play out between April and June.
It said different stimulus packages adopted by governments will help the industry wake up faster, adding that oil production outside its control will drop by 3.5m barrels daily.

E2%80%99t-benefit-311m-abacha-loot-says-garba-shehu Mambilla Project Won’t Benefit From $311m Abacha Loot, Says Garba Shehu

The Presidency says it acted in error by adding the Mambilla project among those to benefit from the $311m loot by late former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, which was recently returned to Nigeria from the United States and the Bailiwick of Jersey.
Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, had in a statement last week announced that the project along with second Niger Bridge, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Expressway, and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway would be the beneficiaries.
But in another statement on Wednesday, Shehu said he regretted the erroneous addition of the project to the list as it was not part of the projects to be financed under the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund managed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority.

The recently repatriated Sani Abacha loot will go towards three of the Federal Government’s five priority projects, excluding the Mambilla power and East-West Road projects.
He said, “In an earlier statement, I had mistakenly noted that the Mambilla was one of five priority projects to benefit from the $311m Abacha loot under the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund managed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority. That error is regretted.
“Although the Mambilla and East-West expressway are regarded under the PIDF as priority projects, I have ascertained that they are exempt from the agreement signed between the Nigerian, United States and British territory of Jersey governments.
“According to the document, only the second Niger Bridge, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Expressway, and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will benefit from the repatriated funds. The funds are domiciled in the NSIA.”
