Opponents Of Hate Speech Bill Are Pretenders -Senator Abdullahi

Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and sponsor of the Hate Speech Bill, Aliyu Abdullahi, has said those, who oppose the bill, are merely pretending and ignoring the danger to come if the bill was not passed. On November 27, Nigerians staged peaceful protest nationwide against the bill, which they said violates their fundamental human rights to free speech. In a statement on Sunday, Abdullahi, who is the sponsor of the bill, said its opponents were only pretending to protect freedom of speech. He said, “Both Christians and Muslims have said that the media blatantly expresses bias against their religion and that journalists will deliberately not report their story or perspective.“Outside the immediate communities affected by a specific incident, the general public’s understanding of violent events is often incomplete.“In some cases, false news about attacks have incited the people to undertake revenge attacks in various parts of the country.”

Buhari Complies With London Court Order Yet Disobeys Nigerian Courts -Falana

Rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has accused President Muhammadu Buhari’s government of disobeying valid court orders in Nigeria but complying with orders from a United Kingdom court. Nigeria, through the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), paid a $200m bond deposit following the approval by President Buhari. The move follows a stay of execution for a $9.6bn judgment awarded against Nigeria in favour of Process & Industrial Development Limited. In a letter to Malami on Sunday, Falana said the Nigerian Government did not give any precondition before obeying the court of its “former colonial master” as it does at home.Falana asked the government to comply with court orders and release Omoyele Sowore. He said, “It is however disturbing to note notwithstanding such deference to the courts of its former colonial master, the Nigerian Government has continued to disobey valid and subsisting orders of Nigerian courts and the court of justice of the Economic Court of West African States including orders for the release of political detainees and criminal suspects from unlawful custody. “For instance, the State Security Service has continued to detain our clients, Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare, in defiance of the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which has admitted them to bail pending trial.“In treating the court order with provocative contempt, the State Security Service has insisted on approving the sureties of our clients after they had been verified by the court. From the information at our disposal, there is no precedent whatsoever for the illegal demand.“Instead of purging the security agency of such contempt of court, the prosecutor, Dr Hassan Liman (SAN), engaged by your good self to prosecute our clients, has curiously applied to the trial court to have them transferred to a correctional centre and detained indefinitely for having the temerity to question the illegal directive to produce their sureties.“In view of the fact that the government has never given any precondition before complying with the orders of the British court in the case of P&ID and other matters, we are compelled to request you to direct the State Security Service to comply with the orders of the Federal High Court for the unconditional release of our clients.”

Tajudeen Ibrahim

SaharaReporters Media

Tajudeen Ibrahim, father of the slain bank employee, Nofisat, who was killed by gunmen in Akure, Ondo State, on August 28, 2019, has again cried out for justice over the incident.
The deceased was in charge of Point of Sale ordering in the financial institution when she was gruesomely killed.
Recall that the police said it begun an investigation into the murder case which led to the arrest of three suspects.
But according to father of the victim, suspects fingered in the killing of his daughter have been moving around freely without being investigated.
The bereaved father, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said the homicide section of the Ondo State Police Command handling the murder case has been playing ‘games’ with the suspects.
He stated that despite attempts to unravel those, who killed his daughter, the police had been perverting all means of getting justice on the case.
He said, “All the statements we made at the Fanibi Police Station were all transferred to the SCID in Akure for more investigation.
“At the time, the homicide section of the police called all those that made statements at the Fanibi Station, they refused to invite me.
“After a month, I drove down to the station myself and I asked these officers why they had not called me but they told me that event had overtaken it.
“They said they were making progress over the case and we should give them more time to do their investigations.
“Few weeks after, they told me that they were rounding off their investigations and would need to invite Adetutu’s fiancé (Deji).
“I asked them why and they said it was part of their investigation.
“Deji had to visit the station to clear himself but on getting there, he was locked up and the police called me to be available by the following day when they will be interrogating him.
“By the time I got to the station, they took him away to his house and searched the entire place while I awaited them for almost three hours at the station.
“After questioning him several times, nothing was found.
“This is the fourth month yet there is still no clue to the murder of my daughter.
“I am still wondering why has the police had refused to invite me for interrogation since I made a statement concerning the killing of my daughter at Fanibi Police Station.
“I want the police to tell the whole world the outcome of their investigation and the one they did with my daughter’s fiancé.
“I want justice to be done on this matter.”
Femi Joseph, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, could not be reached when contacted on the telephone for comments.

E2%80%99s-oil-jobs-battling-bleak-future Under Threat: Emerging Alternatives Leave Nigeria’s Oil Jobs Battling Bleak Future

Newsweek

Nigeria is largely dependent on the sale of fossil fuel to grow its economy and fund its annual budget. As the world’s attention shifts to cleaner alternatives occasioned by climate change, big spenders on the Nigerian crude are seeking cheaper and in some cases greener alternatives.
The reliance on crude oil sales, which amounts for about 90 per cent of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings has led the government to pay little or no attention to the development of renewable energy or other viable sectors with the potential to create employment for Nigerians. The National Bureau of Statistics in its 2018 report put Nigeria’s unemployed population at 20.9 million.
For a country that is 90 per cent dependent on crude revenue, what is the future of jobs tied to Nigeria’s oil sector?
Nigeria’s largest oil buyer, India, has found cheaper alternatives in Iraq causing its imports from Nigeria to fall in August by 18.3 per cent, which amounts to 764,500 barrels of crude oil drop as its prices rose.
“The demand for crude is decreasing and so almost weekly, people are laid off in this industry.
“It so much that the oil companies do not allow us unionise so that we cannot ask for benefits,” says Timini Price, an oil rig worker in Delta State.
When asked if he thinks Nigeria’s reliance is sustainable, he simply says, “It cannot last. Even the government knows but greed will not allow them create options for us.
“I’ve seen a lot of greed in oil, oil money is sweet but at the end of the day if people don’t have jobs again, will it still be okay? I don’t think so.”
In March 2018, thousands of oil workers picketed oil service companies over their harmful labour practices, an effect of dwindling oil revenue.
Leader of the group, Bank-Antony Okoroafor, told oilprice.com, “It is difficult times for the oil firms, not just the service firms but also oil firms that are facing the headwinds in the oil market.
“Some of them are finding it difficult to pay for jobs delivered by service firms.
“So, they owe us. We don’t go to war with them because we know what the industry is passing through.”
The distress in the industry, regardless of the cause shows that the world is changing in its attitude towards fossil fuels and Nigeria must evolve if it must provide jobs for its unemployed youths.
When one door closes, another opens
With Nigeria’s unique geography location near the equator, the country has the potential to generate solar energy, wind energy as well as hydro-power, which it can in turn sell to regional and continental neighbours to generate revenue.
This potential for transitioning on its reliance on fossil fuel also has the capacity to generate at least 52,000 jobs per annum, analysts believe.
Goke Adenuga, a climate change activist, said the growing loss of jobs in the oil sector can be a win for the climate and economy.
“One lesson Nigeria can learn from very populated countries such as Brazil, India and China is the use of decentralised renewables as a way to create jobs while also providing solution to the country’s electricity problems.
“It also benefits the planet because more sustainable ways of generating energy can be explored.
“I’m sure you can see how Nigeria’s weather system is changing, the rains no longer come when they should and we are experiencing warmer temperatures.
“It would be the greatest achievement of any government in Nigeria to deviate from fossil fuel.”
While Nigerian oil workers continue to lose their jobs over changing oil markets, it is clear that the only way to survive the drought about to hit the Nigerian economy is to begin a targeted transition, which will create cleaner and renewable energy, provide revenue for the country as well as jobs for its young people.

E2%80%99s-education-funding Atiku Tackles Buhari Over Nigeria’s Education Funding

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration of not investing enough resources in developing the country’s education sector.
He said that the regime’s poor budgetary provision to education in the past four years will make it difficult for the country to defeat terrorism, which according to him is caused by illiteracy.
Speaking at a ceremony hosted by American University of Nigeria on Saturday in Yola, capital of Adamawa, the former Vice President described education as “a pathway to exit the dubious record of being the world’s headquarters of extreme poverty”.
Atiku pointed that Buhari’s less than 10 per cent budgetary allocation to education was below the 15 per cent minimum recommended for developing countries by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
He explained that Nigeria cannot grow if government does not invest in education.
He said, “The reason why the country is experiencing insecurity is because of poverty which is the product of illiteracy and it is a cycle that the country can only break by educating the citizenry.
“Investment in education will take Nigeria to the level of unprecedented development.”

I Want My Respect Back, Not Belt, Says Anthony Joshua

Ahead of his much anticipated rematch with Mexican, Andy Ruiz Jnr, in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, Anthony Joshua has said that he is more interested in earning back his respect than winning the belts he lost to Ruiz.
The Nigerian-born British heavyweight boxer had endured all sorts of criticism since falling to a shock defeat in New York against Ruiz.
Joshua said, “I’ve had time to reflect. It took me three weeks to come to terms with the loss.
“I’m taking it even more serious now so I can go up yet another level.
“I don’t often look at the belts. I don’t have a big trophy cabinet at home. I don’t show them off at night clubs. That’s not me. I’ve always said the belt should never define the man.
“It’s really about a championship mindset, a championship spirit. I walked as a champion before ever I got a belt. I walk as a champion now. I will walk as a champion after I beat Ruiz. That’s my mindset going into this fight.”
Joshua and Ruiz are reported to have trimmed off muscle and fat, respectively, in an effort to be fastest to the draw in a fight few expect to go the distance.
The extra speed of Ruiz – of hand as well as foot – enabled him to come back from a third round knockdown in New York to drop Joshua four times en route to finishing him in the seventh, according to the Daily Mail.
Joshua has no intention of retiring, win or lose.
He added, “I still have more to prove to myself. That’s where the hunger still comes from.”

New Orleans Shooting Leaves 11 Persons Wounded

CNN

At least 11 persons have been wounded in a shooting in New Orleans’ French Quarter on Sunday morning, according to a report by AFP.
The police further disclosed that two of the victims were in a critical condition.
The shooting took place at 3:00am on a crowded commercial street near many hotels in a historic district that attracts visitors from around the world.
No fatalities had been reported and police said they quickly responded to the incident as extra patrols were on duty for an annual Thanksgiving weekend university football game in the city.
“We had officers on that very block that thought they were being fired upon,” police superintendent Shaun Ferguson told reporters.
“Unfortunately, there were so many people out here we were unable to determine who was actually firing shots at the time. We do not know how it started.”

E2%80%99s-actions-says-buhari%E2%80%99s-daughter-zahra People Blame Me For My Father’s Actions, Says Buhari’s Daughter, Zahra

Zahra Indimi, daughter of President Muhammadu Buhari, has said that many Nigerians attack her on the social media for things done by her father.
The delectable young lady made the statement at the first edition of “An Afternoon with Zahra”, an event organised in Abuja by her foundation, ZMB Homes, tagged #ConversationWithZahra, The Interview reports.
She said, “2015 was when I knew what bullying was. It started with my photos going viral. I was actually having a yoga class and was sweating but people were busy sending my pictures up and down. People used it for their gain during the campaign.
“But the issue changed the way people looked at my dad because they didn’t know that we were educated, we could speak English, and we could dress.
“So, it changed a few things for good. It showed another light. People then understood that in the North not everybody is illiterate.
“The 2015 elections went well. After 100 days, then the blow started coming. ‘Zahra your father did this… Zahra your father did that. But seriously, am I in office with him? Do I take any vital decision?
“Did you understand why some decisions are being taken? When I post my picture, it is my picture. It is not your child’s picture. I kept wondering why people do this to me constantly.”
